IN PURSUIT OF A BETTER LIFE

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” -Jeremiah 29:11.

From this post, I’ll be blogging until God knows when far from our home as I begin a new challenging chapter in my life.

I have been to a  few places abroad; Tokyo, California and Las Vegas, Bangkok, Bendar Seri Begawan, Auckland, New Zealand and Hong Kong but this is the very first time that I am in a foreign shore not as a vacationist but as a father and a husband who seeks better life for his family.

I have made the decision to temporarily leave my wife and our preschooler son, to RESTART AND  REBUILD OUR FUTURE as a FAMILY. It is however with high hopes that in several weeks time, they can also follow and stay with me in my new work place abroad.  It’s a mutual decision between Tina and I as we both take part and contribute in EACH OTHER GROWTHS.

The thought  isn’t new to me.  In fact, my wife and I long to work abroad NOT because we don’t have hopes in our own country but personally, I believe we can CHALLENGE more our POTENTIALS to SUCCEED and further IMPROVE OURSELVES if we continue to pursue our dreams and gradually bring them to reality.

I am a child of OFWs; figuratively, “KATAS ng SAUDI.”  My dad was a former Supermarket Manager all over KSA, Kuwait and UAE for more than 17 years.   And just 2 years ago, my mom has extended her being an Accountant and Administrative Manager to the Middle East too.  But neither of them influenced me nor forced me to become one as well.  In fact, they constantly INSPIRE me with their perseverance, dedication, hard work, and above all, their LOVE FOR FAMILY.

I do have great respect to those Filipinos who continuously sacrifice their physical absence to most important occasions in their family in exchange of a more lucrative career.  I admire those Filipinos who tirelessly complete and often times, renew and extend their contracts with their employers abroad with indirect efforts to motivate others to do the same.

I wish that I can also do well in the job that has been MY PASSION and I’ll continuously pray hard for me to deliver the work effectively, beyond expectations.

To my dearest wife, Tina and our preschool son, Gabby, apparently your unconditional love and support drive me to be on my toes and be willed enough to do this for our family’s future.  With our constant communication and prayers, I know everything will yield positive things and bountiful blessings.

See you on Skype nightly and do keep your phone lines open to melt my homesickness away. :D

I am doing this for the Glory of God and for the sake of MY FAMILY, benefiting our country eventually.

Come follow me as this blog takes you to MALAYSIA and more.

This is it.

Let’s do this.

LEAVING SOON

Just a few days ago, some kind readers left their comments about my post on exploring possibilities of migrating and working abroad.   Now, I’d like to share with you what I and my family are expecting in the next few days.

Unless there will be sudden changes, yes, my days in Manila are numbered.

I’ve started buying few stuffs that I’ll be using and wearing when I begin to work with more or less 30 other great Filipino doctors who will be flying with me to Malaysia before this month ends.

We were told that work wear is strictly suit and tie; finally, I get to wear my few old and new shirts and silk ties from Marks and Spencer once more. :)

Seriously, I’m having mixed emotions about it.

I remain grateful to  the Lord for He isn’t only a great provider but indeed Almighty.

I try not to be overwhelmed with the quick turnout of events and be composed and collected at all times. After all, it was well thought of and God knows how determined I am to succeed, hopefully abroad.

I can confidently state that teaching my medical profession has been my passion and I guess, my noble mission for 6 years and counting. I like it when I get to inspire and motivate people to do more for themselves and for others.

Having handled around 6,000 students to date, both in college and review centers; produced countless local and foreign board passers and inspiring achievers, I believe I’ll be in the right track if I’ll continue to follow my instincts and Lord’s will.

What happened was I applied for a teaching job in a medical school on the last few days of June via email.  Soon after, I received a positive response and was scheduled for an interview  last July 1st.

Despite the fact that nothing will be paid; no placement and processing fees whatsoever, and there’s also a hard-to-resist offer of scholarship to take Masters Degree while working and although it is possible, we still thought it’s too risky on our part for us to go there altogether so Tina and I decided that they’ll just follow there probably after a month or two or whenever possible.

I wish this step huge leap will bring growth not only for myself but moreso for my beloved family.

It will be a totally different new and exciting challenges for us so I’ll appreciate if you include us in your prayers. Thanks!

Will you still follow and read my blog if I’ll post entries next month from Penang, Malaysia?

Wish me luck.

So help me, God.

I’m currently savoring my days with my family and enjoying attending events that are worth a post. So stay tuned. :)

LEAVING ON A JET PLANE

inside jetstream 41 cockpit

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go
Cause I’m leavin’ on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go

Cause I’m leavin’ on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go”

No one’s leaving yet, ha ha! :) This song instantly popped out of nowhere last night right after I came home exhausted from an appointment.  I had a long day yesterday and I found myself humming this tune inside my head.   Then my imaginary singing led to flight of ideas.

What if my wife who’s a California-Registered Nurse and a Visa-Screen Certified by CGFNS finally finds an employer to petition her and would have to leave me for several months until she gets to petition me and our son?  I am not worried with being alone to take care of Gabby but with Tina. Can she bear and thrive without the 2 of us? ha ha. :D   Who’s gonna wash the dishes?  Who’s gonna clean the toilet ? LOL! :D She’ll LOL when she reads this. But the thing is, unlike you, kind reader, my wife barely scans my posts.

Or what if I’ll find an opportunity that will also require me to do the same thing of leaving my family temporarily for greener pasteurs, err we’re not cows! for a better future ?  Will I also experience what they call “homesick-ness” ?

FYI, my dad worked as an OCW in KSA, Kuwait and UAE for more than 17 years and his earnings brought us to High School and College. Back then, he’d sent us so many “voice tapes”  in C30 or C90  (how very 80s) with a usual message that he missed us so much.  At present, I constantly chat with my mom who’s in UAE for work and would always tell her we miss her too.

I know it’s unwise to count the chickens before they hatch.  I learned that from Farmville, LOL.  :D

I am not preempting things; I’m just anxious thinking of the possiblities.

It’s an open book that Tina and I are trying to find chances of working abroad. But it seems luck isn’t on our side yet.  We’re not complaining. We both believe that the Lord has better plans for all of us and that sometimes, things don’t happen the way we planned it. We may not be content with the way things are at present and despite the challenges that life brings, we just have to trust His plans and let His will be done!  Do I sound profound now? :)

For those of you who are members of the local work fields, have you also considered going abroad to earn for your family?

Or have you lived/have been living that life with homesick-ness?  If so, what’s the most memorable thing that you’ve experienced working abroad and lessons learned of doing so ?

THE BIG LEAP

You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”Annie Dillard

This strengthens somehow, my will to take the big leap.

I am leaving the college that I served beyond my salary of four years.

It’s high time to move on.  It’s no longer healthy for me to stay.

I believe I deserve something far better.

A workplace where politics and gossips do not exist or at least minimal,

to wherever my efforts will be recognized and reciprocated,

most importantly to a venue where people work for the good of others and the glory of God.

Shakespeare  wrote “Parting is such a sweet sorrow.”

But for the moment, I say parting is such a sweet LIBERATION !”

ABRIL…

Last week, I was invited to a job interview through email for I was APPLYING (again and again and again- got to have additional jobs for my regular job doesnt pay that much and the review center I was working with for a year now hasnt paid me in full for my work last March 1, 2008 ; TALKING ABOUT MONEY-MATTERS NOWADAYS…tsktsktsk…)  as an instructor in a well-established review center which is a franchise abroad. I just applied through jobstreet.com.ph and according to that website, my resume was viewed 5 times by the employer and was "under consideration."  The interview set last Thursday April 3 at 10AM was done in the review center office at TM Kalaw Center Bldg, by the program director who’s a very accomplished nurse-doctor. I was interviewed for one whole hour. The other applicant waiting in the lounge for her turn thought that I was already asked to do a teaching demo or a mock-lecture for she waited that long. I enjoyed the interview. It was another learning-experience. It’s good to meet and talk to people whom you can learn from. It will be a great opportunity, just in case I get hired, for me to work in that office not only financially (the offer is P700-P1,200 per hour of 2 -3x a week lecture), but I guess the staff including the american owner of the franchise are kind-hearted people. After the interview the administrative officer told us to expect an email for the schedule of a mock-lecture in which the owner, staff and former reviewees can evaluate applicants’ performance.

SATURDAY, April 05 was a date to forget. I nodded to my dean’s request for me to see and explain at her office those who failed in my subject (Medical-Surgical Nursing). I came to the office earlier than expected (as usual, I am PUNCTUAL and PROFESSIONAL as ever) only to know that the dean will be late for a reason and my original class record only for the particular section which I had 12 failures (total number of failures for my 6 sections alone inspite of the remedial exam which I never give previously : 24 ) is missing for a week and the office, even the dean herself has NO EXPLANATION how it was LOST !!! Although I have a photocopy of all of my records, I told them that it is an INSULT on my part as a member of the faculty for I had worked on that class record for an entire semester and it’s UNFAIR for me who COMPLIED religiously to the office’s requirements whether it was misplaced or deliberately was lost because of CARELESSNESS.  I knew the 2 secretaries of the office for four years now and this problem never happened to us.  The College of Nursing office looks like a warehouse or a stockroom now with so many MESS and not a dignified office of the dean as it is suppose to be.  IT SCREAMS THE NEED TO REORGANIZE EVERYTHING.

In my four years in the academe, I HAD  N E V E R   EXPERIENCE SUCH THING !

MOVING ON to a lighter note – also on that day, I received a text message and a phone call from Doc Neal, a good friend of 15 years now, who also happens to be ninong to my son Gabby, to attend to his son’s CHRISTening the following day.  We both invited another friend and agreed to be present the next day in their place in Muntinlupa.

Sunday, April 6, I and my wife Tina & son Gabby met Loreto at Starbucks in wherelse but our meeting place for more than decades now – Shangri-la mall and hurried to Muntinlupa to grace the baptism of Lance SeBASTIan P. Argana. IT WAS TRULY RELAXING for MY SPIRIT especially on that weekend, to witness a child being CHRISTened. The date of Basti’s baptism is also the birthdate of his mom – Doc Vec.  It was a reunion for us to see again Neal and his parents.

the blogger took these photos of his wife Ite, and son Gabby, Doc Neal & his son Basti &  friend LG.

Loreto and my family went to Trinoma after the party (from Muntinlupa in the South, to Trinoma in the North) My son Gabby wanted to watch HORTON, a cartoon-movie about animals. But all the cinemas at Trinoma last Sunday were closed to public probably because of the poor airconditioning that day. So Gabby settled for TOYS R US store…

WE BOUGHT A NEW CAR !!! – a remote control car that is… LOL… It’s a red mini cooper with full functions – headlights, side turns, etc. More than Gabby, I was excited to play it myself, hehehe.

We munched at Superbowl of China for an early dinner then we went home and as I read my email, the admin officer of the review center that I am applying at is inviting me to a demo scheduled on April 9, at 4:30PM. That moment, I decided to do a mock lecture on DIABETES MELLITUS, injected some NCLEX-sample questions to my powerpoint presentation for it to be problem-based.

April 8 – Tuesday – I bought a new laser pointer at NBS for my demo the next day. I went to Gateway Mall with Gabby to meet Ite after her O.R. duty.  Gabby enjoyed in his fave place -Timezone and when Mommy Ite came in, we ate merienda at its foodcourt and Gabby begged for another chance to play at Timezone.

Gabby : Mommy ‘Te, Timezone ulit.

Ite : Anak, next time na, naglaro ka na kanina e.

Gabby : O sige na nga, STARBUCKS na lang…

My 3-year-old kid knows how to bargain (for something better) already.

April 9 – Wednesday. I came to TM Kalaw Center Bldg. 30 minutes earlier than required. I met my co-applicants. I learned we were narrowed down to 5 from the many who applied for the position. I was told to do the demo FIRST, and agreed on it. The staff asked us applicants to fill out a form for us to encircle the topics that we are comfortable with in order to guide them on the assignments of topics to be discussed should we become part of the company. THE DEMO was over. Though it was limited to 20-minute discussion, I had FUN doing it

At least if I will not get the position, it’s another one for the books..  The staff of that NCLEX/CGFNS review center was sweet enough to treat us with pizza and coke from Shakey’s. We learned from them that it’s the habit of the office to treat applicants that way and also the enrollees every after review program.  After all of us 5 applicants had done our demo, the owner shook our hands and thanked us for coming over.  He even said that what we did was better than American Idol, hahaha… He asked us to take our final bow infront of his former reviewees.  For them to offer pizza to their applicants was sweet. But it is sweeter to hear APPLAUSE from the people who listened to our demo.

JUST LIKE MY PREVIOUS JOB HUNTING, which I also blogged here, I AM ONLY TAKING CHANCES…

Till then… THANKS !

SO YOU WANT TO BE A NURSE ?

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL…

MANY WERE CALLED BUT FEW WERE CHOSEN…

These are also applicable in medical profession.

                         Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

It’s a common knowledge that the Philippines has become a huge factory of NURSES for EXPORT. No less than the second highest official of the land encourages all Filipino High School graduates to take up and finish BS Nursing as their college course for them to get jobs abroad and for them to send their DOLLAR-REMITTANCES  to our third-world economy A.S.A.P. !!!  For as long as one knows his priorities, I honestly believe that there’s nothing wrong working abroad.  My wife and I are also wanting to work overseas. However, all of it, the WHOLE PROCESS IS NOT EASY. It starts on basic education.

To say that Nursing is DIFFICULT is an UNDERSTATEMENT.  It’s FAR from being SIMPLE.

To  handle people’s lives is never easy. To study how to do it is painstakingly complex.

As an educator of so-called soon-to-be-nurses, I have observed that some of my students were just forced to take up Nursing by someone influential in their lives – either their parents or relative(s) who send them to school and support them.  As everyone knows, if we’re not enjoying whatever we’re doing, the outcome will always be NEGATIVE.  It’s so hard to do something if our INTEREST lies on something else. This should be a constant reminder to people who continuously convince their children to take up courses that they do not fancy. Because as I have stated, the outcome will always be FAILURE.

For my students who are either in their 4th or 3rd year, taking up Medical-Surgical Nursing, I oftenly remind them that they should NOT stop wanting to reach for their goal since it’s too late for them to quit – they have gone far of their studies and stopping will be a premature failure. I always remind them that they have to :

READ bookssssssss (read my lips : PLURAL ! )

                                                         enjoy studying,

exert efforts to exceed their abilities,

                                                     challenge themselves,

                                                           be positive,

always do some sacrifices for studies

for the rewards will be great in the end.

This is the most satisfying part of my humble job. Though it’s not that financially rewarding compared to others, INSPIRING young minds to do more gives me the drive to live and enjoy my work daily.

NOTHING IS  ACHIEVED EASILY.  Even Manny Pacquiao prepares for all his fights. So it should be an iNSTINCT for all students & board reviewees to study wholeheartedly, ofcourse.

Nursing does not fit all. It’s not for all who just want a better life abroad. For those who cannot endure the demands of this course, you wont enjoy it. For those who are NOT DEDICATED to salvage people’s lives and understanding patients’ needs – you may be successful in other fields but not in Nursing.

If I am not married to a nurse, perhaps just like my colleagues in the medical fields,

I have also joined the league.

REUNIONS

      Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

A lot of gatherings happened with just the beginning of the year. Reunions keep our ties intact. And these made my first three weeks of 2008 unforgettable.  My dad-in-law came home from Missouri for the holidays last month, and my wife Ity, my son Gabby and my sis & bro-in-law spent time with him in Subic & Tagaytay. The day he left for the US was the first week of vacation of another relatives. My Tita Glo, Tito George & cousin Ann went home from L.A. to spent their break here and to celebrate with all of us, my Lola Tentay’s 88th birthday. It was only last night when I saw again my relatives on my paternal side almost complete at the dinner for my lola’s party. Just like any other birthday celebrations, it was a thanksgiving for the life she has been living, and for all the blessings our whole clan is receiving. All of my relatives were so happy to see my son Gabby so big & so healthy.

I also had reunions with my former students. The top 6 of Nursing Licensure Examination 2007 June who was my student for 2 semesters in Medical-Surgical Nursing visited me last week during my class. Aynne came to school with her classmate, Jeff who is also RN now.  Both of them asked me to sign recommendation letters as they complete requirements for their applications in various hospitals. Aynne also submitted a letter of reference to the school’s admin, stating she attributes her success with my humble contribution.  Five of her batchmates from other section (4211) also came for a visit to ask me if I can serve as their character reference as they hunt for jobs in local hospitals.  One of my reviewee in USGC-Ubelt Review Center (tel # 741-1584) also took efforts in seeing me during work just to thank me for she just passed NCLEX. Another surprise reunion for me happened only last Thursday, when two of my Batch 2006 students, RL and Susan also visited me just to show their gratefulness, for both of them are already NCLEX and IELTS passers. Those meetings keep me sane and serve as proofs that I am still doing something right somehow, in encouraging my nursing students to do more and exert efforts in their studies for the rewards will be great someday.

As I blog this, I and my wife & son are set to meet our friend Rob this afternoon (with another friend of 15 years LG) who always comes home for vacation every 3 months for a break from his paramedic work in mid east.

Whether simple or planned, it is an understatement to state that reunions enrich our lives with memories. With that, I’m rich in experience again this early time of the year.

Till my next gathering …

HALAGA

ACCIDENTAL DESTINY ?

My youngest brother left 2 days ago for Europe where he will work in a cruise ship called Costa Atlantica. Anyone will be envious of his work where cruising Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Norway, Greece, Estonia, Russia, Portugal, Denmark, Spain and other european tourist spots with the rich and famous is the icing on the cake. He landed the job just before finishing his O.J.T. in the same office that sent him to Europe.  Things came to his lap so swiftly. Fortunately for him, he gets to work abroad barely 3 months after graduation. And there he is now, he emailed and texted us that he already arrived at Schippol Airport in Amsterdam safe and sound.  He’s the first in our family to have a Schengen visa and the first to earn Euro at age 21.

But he didn’t had Tourism as an initial course in mind before. And he didn’t had CEU as his only school. Meaning, he enrolled in 2 other universities with 2 different courses before he decided that Tourism at his alma mater is the ONE for him. He was delayed for a year than his batchmates. But heck, he is in Europe now.  He’ll be working while traveling and meeting people and learning various cultures. and smelling tulips and opportunities are just countless… What more can you ask for.

I myself did not plan to be a doctor or to be a member of an academe. Most of my friends back in High School thought that I will pursue fine arts after being a consistent winner or runner up in monthly poster-making contests representing our section, competed against other year levels which they had my other brother (now a private aviator) as their rep. I did not enrol in a college of fine arts, nor did push through a career in advertising but took and finished BIOLOGY, a pre-med course that lead me to MEDICINE. And as they say, the rest is blah blah blah…(uhhmm, history).

Fate has its way of leading us to where and what we should be. God has plans for us long before we ask for our lifelong wishes. He’s omnipotent. He knows BEST. Sometimes, our plans do not go well with His. So we have to better our lives and fit to every situation that come our way. Flexibility with destiny is essential to enjoy life to the fullest and for us NOT to consider that ours is just accidental.

ROXAS CITY, C A P I Z …makisaya, biyahe tayo !

The local flight I had last April 20 – 22, 2007 was not actually for leisure but work. I was sent by my office to Roxas City to conduct Medical Surgical NCLEX review.  My flight was delayed making my stay at the boarding area of the airport a little longer. There I saw some celebrities who are also patiently waiting for their own flights. The  basketball teams of San Miguel and Sta Lucia were there waiting for their flight to Tacloban. Then came Team Goma, headed by the wannabe senator and his entourage for a provincial campaign.

I departed Manila at half hour past noon. The flight via Cebu Pacific was ok, took only 45 minutes to get to Capiz. From the airport I was fetched by the review center coordinator & a reviewee who were both pleasant & accomodating. We went for a late lunch by the shoreline. It was a feast of mouthwatering seafoods you can think of – soup of clams, buttered prawns, grilled tanigue, oysters and pork barbeque. What a way to welcome a manileno.  Then they brought me to Roxas Midtown hotel, a newly built, small but clean, and cozy hotel. Few minutes after check-in, I found myself conducting the first part of the review at the office. The reception of the people (staff & reviewees) from Roxas City was overwhelming. They were warm, interactive with the review & hospitable in every sense of the word.

The whole trip was far from what I had expected. I enjoyed it so much. Besides sharing a bit of my knowledge to local nurses is already fulfilling job, the fact of being in a new place, meeting people & eating good food is even more. I have never eaten that much seafoods with bare hands before – crabs, prawns, clams, fresh & dried fish, grilled or buttered or cooked in soup..hmmm, yummy!!! Now I know why Roxas is known as Seafood Capital of the country. Not to forget the mangoes from Guimaras which were the sweetest I have ever tasted..

I went back to Manila by April 22, Sunday afternoon.

By the way, i did not see any flying half-bodied night creature there as most locals believe. hehehe…
