ON RED PLATES

Dining out with a 7-year-old-kid who absolutely knows what his palate wants and a wife who can whip almost everything in the kitchen with her disciminating taste, in Malaysian states where predominant dishes are richly flavored with herbs & spices (read : ultra hot, hot, hot!) may be a little challenge.  Because of this and due to limited budget, we don’t really go out to eat on a weekly basis nor as frequent as others might think.

For someone whose family’s gustatory sense was not accustomed to spicy cuisine, I often bring them to something we’re familiar with. Our priority has always been Gabby’s preferences or something that he would agree where he can also eat and enjoy dining.  Luckily, there are those food places that we all favor that usually reminds of our eating-out-moments back home. One of those restaurants we used to go to in Glorietta in Makati City and Trinoma in Quezon City that has a branch here in Penang and in Kuala Lumpur is T.G.I. Friday’s. ;)

Gabby’s favorites include that Cheesy Macaroni with tomato dip (5th photo above) and Cajun Chicken Fingers with fries and honey mustard dip. He also likes TGIF’s Caesar’s Salad. While Tina’s choices aren’t constant, I am otherwise. My default option if it’s TGIF has been Jack Daniel’s Chicken that’s fire-grilled and basted with that sweet Jack Daniel’s glaze. Sarap!!! :)

*Photos were taken randomly from TGI Friday’s branches in Paragon Mall in Gurney Drive, Penang and in Pavilion Mall, Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur.

WHEN MAN CREATED COOKING OIL…

our intake has been more palatable.
Do you ever ask the staff of a restaurant before making your order if the oil that they’re using in frying has less cholesterol or is zero-trans-fat ?  If so, you’re highly conscious  giving a great thing for your health and the staff, if and when knowledgeable about their menu must be commendable!
Do you consider the type of cooking oil when you do grocery shopping? Preference includes olive / extra-virgin olive oil, canola, safflower, truffle and walnut oil for salads, sesame oil for most Chinese cuisines, palm oil (which is so cheap in Malaysia!) and the list goes on…

deep fried prawns wrapped with shoestring potatoes. Unlike the usual ebi tempura, the prawns weren't covered with thick batter but with thin potatoes served with fries --lipid & carbo overloading!

We love fried food. I know, it’s unhealthy (but our cells need fats too, you know! *sounds like pacquiao*  the key is “everything should be in moderation.” –easier said than done though).

fish be with you! fish and chips

Sinfully delicious!

Fridays' shrimp with tartar sauce

Fine, I don’t practice what I preach but can you blame me? My family and I are too weak to resist fried foods, haha! :)

cajun chicken fingers + fries + HONEY MUSTARD SAUCE = wow, anytime!

But we eat veggies and fruits in between to cleanse excess oil in the gut. the key is fiber, fiber, fiber!

Apparently, anything grilled, blanched, steamed and poached has less untoward effects compared to fried.

salmon pasta

cheesey soup adds up to the calories!

french onion soup

These artery-clogging dishes can put anyone at risk to develop cardiovascular disorders IF and WHEN taken frequently. Remember the cliche, “anything in excess is bad!”.  You are warned. I admit, my family and I are sinners. But we know how to repent! haha! :)

thankful for all the blessings!

Enjoy your weekend everyone! Happy eating! :)

SINFUL DINNER AT TGIF’S, PENANG

Last Saturday, my housemates and I trooped once more to the Island to unwind, forget homesickness and kill time as usual. We watched an action-comedy flick, The Other Guys, did little shopping after and filled in our tummies with yummies for dinner.

There was no other choice but to sample T.G.I.F branch in Queensbay Mall, Penang Island; if it fairs with TGIFs Manila, food and service-wise.

On our table…

doc Carlo’s lamb chops…

doc Alvin’s Jack Daniel’s hamburger…

doc Ronnie’s Shrimp Diablo pasta…

and my Saturday plate : Jack Daniel’s Chicken…

Inspite of the fun company being with my colleagues here, still I can’t help but to be homesick as I recall our fond TGIF-family moments at TriNoma and Glorietta branches back home…

With special occasions to celebrate or just ordinary days, dining in TGIF’s is always a hit!

Food was as expected, deliciously standard as what we have in Manila but service back home is more welcoming, warm and nice.

PS :  I have a confession to make.

Since we know that TGIF gives freebie to diner who celebrates his/her birthday, I told the wait staff that it was Alvin’s big day that day so she came back with a delightful plate of peanut butter fudge cake. But unlike in Manila branches where Happy Birthday song is usually sang with dance steps and the works, there was none in Penang.

Truth is, my friend’s birthday wasn’t last Saturday but 2 months from now.

I know it’s BAD!

It’s SINFUL!

Forgive me, Lord! *liar, liar!*

It was my first time to do it and will try my best not to repeat it again, so help me God!  *guilty*

But the cake was really sublime, a perfect ending to a sumptuous weekend dinner.

Good thing, we didn’t have gastroenteritis after that white lie. Don’t do it at home or anywhere else, kids!

BTW, how was your weekend?

GABBY TURNS 5

Our son, Gabby officially turns FIVE today.  Happy Birthday, anak!  Your mom and I love you so much!  Thank You, Lord for giving us Your greatest blessing.

In line with his birthday and in the spirit of sharing,  my wife and I segregated again his old clothes which we’ll donate to the children affected by typhoons.  I already brought few kilos of his clothes to my work for similar reach-out activity last week and we’ll do it again this week in response to the request of the organizers of Philippine Blog Awards.

This humble blog  is one of the finalists under Family and Living Category on this year’s PBA.  Last weekend, I received the official invitation via email to the awards night this Friday, October 09, at PETA theater in Quezon City and with it came a request for all the blogger-finalists and attendees and their guests to bring dry clothes, towels, footwears to the designated area at the venue which they will turn over to the recipients.

CONFESSION :  I’m a sentimental fool. I’m attached for a while to some things of the past that usually remind me of  remarkable memories.  Such things include our son’s baby clothes.  It’s not that we don’t like to give them away as most of them are of imported brands, but a lot of these clothes were gifts from my in-laws, relatives and friends.
IMG_4096IMG_4094

Then again, we thought of finally donating them to the needy rather than keeping them with no use in our wardrobes. So these few pieces will be brought to PBA Awards night as our little pledge. We’re happy that we’ll donate all of these with our son’s consent. :D

His preschool, which is a few blocks away from our place, allows simple birthday celebrations during recess.  Since Gabby is a member of TGI Friday’s, TriNoma which gives him FREE KIDDIE MEALS for an entire whole year of dining with them and a free birthday package for 30 kids, we initially thought that we’re spared with the expenses for his birthday party this year.

But just like other nice things with little hassles in between, the free TGIF birthday kiddie package is only available for pick up during store hours, which we completely understand.  Problem is, our son’s school recess is at 9:30AM so it will be impossible for us to use the TGIF freebies to their class as his party food. Nevertheless, we decided to claim the freebies today and we opted to reschedule our son’s school birthday party on Wednesday, October 07.  My wife is free from work on Wednesdays this semester allowing her to cook and prepare all stuffs.

Tina arranged details with the friendly people of TGIF  TriNoma for me to claim the birthday package today at 1PM.  Since I’m off from work the whole day, I came to the resto with my cousin earlier than expected.

IMG_4097IMG_4100

One our favorite venues for our dates since we’ve met is TGIF.  We like Glorietta 3 and TriNoma branches.  We go here not only for their great food in huge American-servings but also for the ambiance of this resto-bar.  Imagine ski and skate boards, movie posters, whales and big fish, a bicycle and road signs on walls to delight you as you enjoy your plates.

IMG_4099

We only waited for 10 minutes for the staff to prepare these…

IMG_4107

My cousin and I were surprised to easily lift  a tied-5-styro packs in a finger! They were so super light! I almost forgot that these are KIDDIE birthday packs! :D

IMG_4104IMG_4102

Each packs contained fettuccini in tomato beef sauce, chicken fillets and potato chips.

I asked my cousin to bring 10 packs to my dad and siblings and nephew and nieces at our house in Pasig City and the other 10 packs for my aunt, uncle, and cousins whose house in Karangalan Villagae in Pasig was deeply submerged in last week’s typhoon.

We saved the 30 pieces of apple and dalandan juice cups and the packs of plastic spoons and forks for Gabby’s school party.

Tina came home with Breadtalk’s Chocolate mousse with a free little yellow candle for Gabby to blow and make his wish.

IMG_4109IMG_4114

Gabby’s request is a Spongebob Squarepants themed party during their 30-minute recess on Wednesday, so despite the fact that we’re on a tight budget, we’ll grant his wish.

Invites were already sent to his classmates.  He’ll have his Spongebob birthday cake, Spongebob-inspired loot bags and a home-cooked party meal courtesy of his mom.

Thank you TGIF TriNoma!

Thank you Gabby for being so obedient, smart, God-fearing son.

Carry on, anak!

Happy birthday!

PRIDE CHICKEN

Leg /drumstick,

wings,

breast,

thighs….

Take your pick …

I like breast  (no pun intended). :D    My wife’s choice cut is usually wings while our son Gabby likes anything fried less the skin.

Regardless of how it was cooked,  chicken has been a favorite in Pinoy dining tables… The warm broth of  Tinolang Manok  is always delicious especially on a rainy day.  Who doesn’t eat Chicken Adobo?  Perhaps only those who have allergies and those unfamiliar to it.  Fried chicken is definitely a winner sans ketchup or gravy.  There’s just so many ways on how we enjoy this product of poultry.

In no particular order (of  yumminess),   here’s my simple ode to that finger-lickin’ goodness…

img_12382CAFE ADRIATICO’S  CHICKEN A LA KIEV.

This is one of my favorite dish in Cafe Adriatico. It’s just so sinful that once you dip your fork into it, it bursts its secret filling – butter!!! :D     It’s one of those I consider  “I-can-eat-this-everyday” meals… LOL

img_12392

I’m craving now….

tgi'f jack daniel's chickenTGIF’s JACK DANIEL’S CHICKEN.   I like that it’s grilled to perfection and that Jack Daniel sauce is unforgettable.

PEPPER LUNCH’S  CHICKEN PEPPER RICE.  Although I am bias with PL’s Beef Pepper Rice,  this tender chicken strips + only outer shell of peppercorn + PL’s (to-die-for) honey brown sauce + do-it-yourself-cooking = delicious meal :D

2PANCAKE HOUSE’S  PAN FRIED CHICKEN.  What’s unique with Pancake House’s version of fried chicken?  Nothing but the crunchiness of its skin (which is God-forbid, cholesterol-rich!) and perfect frying of the meat plus  that smokey flavored gravy.

IMG_2810SAVORY’S  FRIED CHICKEN CLASSIC.   That oriental-tasting gravy separates Savory’s from the rest.

IMG_3063 WORLD CHICKEN’S GRILLED CHICKEN FILLET with RANCH SAUCE + PESTO PASTA & POTATO SALAD.

I just love this combo from World Chicken! :D

IMG_2946BALIWAG’S  LECHON MANOK + ATCHARA/PICKLED PAPAYA.   = emergency food !  This has been a part of our home meals whenever we ran out of time to go to the grocery or my wife or our house help failed to cook for whatever reason.  I like it with pickled papaya on plain rice, garlic, or java plus extra gravy please… :D

chicken ballotine, conti'sCONTI’S CHICKEN BALLOTINE.  Conti’s menu consists of  simple dishes with extraordinary tastes.  And this Chicken Ballotine is no exception.  It’s similar to Chicken Cordon Bleu with fillings & stuffings rolled with the chicken and served with cream sauce. Yummy! :D

chicken cheese roll kimono kenKIMONO KEN’S CHICKEN CHEESE ROLL.   One of the must-try in their menu.

The last few are the common favorites in fastfoods that greatly influenced our palate…

IMG_3065KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN’S  CHICKEN STRIPS =goodness.

mcdo MCDONALD’S CHICKEN MCDO = love.

IMG_2937JOLLIBEE’S  CHICKEN JOY =happiness.

What’s your favorite fastfood fried chicken?

Honestly, I equally like them.  :D

But our son Gabby makes his own choice…

IMG_2941IMG_2938

This post lacks our other favorites - Max’s fried chicken (which I don’t have a photo yet to upload) Superbowl of China’s Crispy Lemon Chicken, and the chicken yummies that we still have to taste :  the new Jollibee Chicken barbecue and some Oriental restaurant’s Hainanese Chicken.

Life is short to savor all of those chicken dishes! :(

What chicken meal do you like best?

TGI FRIDAY’S KIDDIE LEAGUE

We revisited TGI Fridays at Trinoma last Sunday, Feb15 for quick lunch before hitting the grocery in Landmark. It was our 4th time to eat in TGIF, Trinoma; also had previous visits in their Glorietta3 branch. The one in Trinoma is more spacious and has more modern interiors, their tables don’t have the usual red & white striped mantles seen in other branches.

img_4015

I so like the walls!
… wish I had these walls in my room when I was a kid… Look at those snow ski boards made in Spain, a skateboard & a blue bike, traffic sign boards among other interesting things. How cool is that?!

img_4019_1

img_4014

Tina ordered Tortilla crusted fish and requested for honey mustard dip…

img_4023

while I decided to eat sizzling chicken and shrimp in mozzarella cheese that was served with 2 scoops of creamy mashed potatoes… sinfully delicious!

img_4026

Our visit became more special when we enlisted Gabby in TGI Friday’s Trinoma Kiddie League after we were invited by the staff. As a member of TGIF kiddie league, Gabby will get the following perks as stated on their temporary membership card:

1. Free Kiddie Meal & drink every visit for 1 year (wow!!!)
2. Free Birthday Package good for 30 kids with PhP 1,000 accumulated receipts within 1 month after card
issuance (the bday package for 30 kids is only offered as delivery within Quezon City; good enough!).
3. to attend a KICK-OFF PARTY with other members as an official launching of the league; ID will be issued.
4. Restrictions : Only valid at TGIF Trinoma, Non-transferrable, must be presented upon dine-in.

As I fill out the form for my son, I found out that almost all members of the Kiddie League are studying in reputable schools which I think will give Gabby MORE oppotunitieS to interact with cultured kids, get social exposures and be engaged with fun-filled activities which are all essentials in growing up.

Wish they also have FREEBIES for parents, hehehe =)

TREINTA Y DOS : how i celebrated my 32nd bday

I thought I won’t have a happy birthday last Thurday for I started the day with anxiety.  I was caught in traffic on my way to Allgen Review in Kalaw, Manila.  I initially planned to take a cab ( just like every Mondays-Wednesdays going to & from UDMC-SACI- my other workplace)  from our place in Quezon City to Kalaw Ave but the pathetic thrifty commuter in me kicked in and decided to take the LRT instead forgetting that I deserved to be comfortable that day.  I had to squeezed myself in the LRT train from Anonas to Legarda station with other people on the rush just to be on time as I am always punctual and never late in any of my commitments. As I dropped off Legarda station, there was no taxi cab for 30 minutes of waiting under the scorching heat so I decided to take the bus. Unfortunately again, I stood up in the bus from Legarda to Taft Avenue with my notebook and heavy stuffs on my back pack.  I thought I won’t be able to last the whole day for I am already dead-tired and exhausted early on the day when I was supposed to be enjoying.

I went first to Times Plaza in UN avenue to buy breakfast stuff for my Allgen family and reviewees.  Since I didn’t have a birthday blowout for them, I thought of buying them muffins & pastries from Le Coeur de France. Afterwhich,  I went straight to Allgen.

Thank God I was not late for the 9AM review.  The staff greeted me with smiles.    As I enter the review room, there was a  birthday greetings on powerpoint slide flashed on the screen.  Then I saw a literally huge birthday card and an Allgen printed shirt on the desk.

I love the card.  All staff including my bosses- the owners of Allgen and one of my co-instructors took time in writing their wishes for me.

The reviewees came one at a time.  One of them, Doc Cheryl, who is a practicing dentist and a nurse taking her Masters, gave me a gift she personally made- a rosary of transparent beads.  Then my anxiety that morning was replaced with smiles.

I did the Musculoskeletal lecture review until around 12:30pm then I told everyone to be back after 1 hour lunch break. It was already around 2pm when 2 of the reviewees were still missing.  l thought they went around to see someone or were trapped somewhere.  Then I received another surprise when the 2 missing reviewees (Kristal and Jen) came back and brought a cake for me.

I did the second part of the lecture and thanked the reviewees for taking efforts to brighten my day. But surprises were not over yet. The entire Allgen staff  came to the room with another cake, and ice cream.  I was struck by the moment when I saw the owners of Allgen also dropped by to greet me and sat in the mini-party.  I really appreciate it.

I am deeply honored to be working with these people who know how to value people by being so appreciative, so approachable, friendly and easy to deal with.  Not all employers and colleagues are grateful of one’s humble contribution.

Then I rode a cab from Kalaw, Manila to Trinoma in Quezon City to meet my wife and my kid and my 2 friends of 15 years.  We had dinner at TGIF and capped the day with smiles.

Rob, thanks for the gift and the photos!

The TGIF crew gave a cheer &  scoops of ice cream with a candle for me which  I gave to my son Gabby for him to enjoy.

To those who greeted me and took time to say their wishes,

THANK YOU SO MUCH. GOD BLESS YOU MORE.
