COOLERS FROM PENANG

This is our very first time to spend summer abroad; although Penang and Manila share similarities under one tropical sun, my family and I still miss some things about this time of the year in the Philippines – from going to Baguio or Tagaytay Cities, to our beautiful beaches, to taking a few week break from work (or for Gabby, from school) less the part of being diaphoretic of course (read : profuse sweating!).

We miss enjoying scoopful of halo-halo topped with leche flan and ube jam and spending some afternoon with dirty ice cream, carioca, turon, banana cue and camote cue from street vendors. Sarap!

To lessen our homesickness, I brought my wifey and kid to places where coolers are best served.

One of the biggest, if not the largest mall in the Island, Queensbay Mall has this kiosk in its food court on Level 3, that sells flavored shaved ice topped with slices and balls of tropical fruits in season. They call it Snow Ice Mix Fruits.

At RM 6 (PhP 84) per bowl, one is treated to a refreshing and nutritious delight that effortlessly beat the summer heat.

If you want to sample distinctly Malaysian dishes and desserts, hit the roads and find nearby hawker food stalls where one can savor unique flavors in colors…

Ais kacang (pronounced as ais ka-chang) is a Malaysian dessert. Traditionally a special ice machine is used to churn out the shaved ice used in the dessert, originally hand cranked but now more often motorized.

Formerly, it was made of only shaved ice and red beans. Today, ice kacang generally comes in bright colours, and with different fruit cocktails and dressings. In Malaysia, almost all variants now contain a large serving of attap chee (palm seed),  red beans, sweet corn, grass jelly and cubes of agar agar as common ingredients. Other less common ingredients include aloe vera in one form or another (e.g. jelly) nata de coco, or ice cream in various variants of the dessert. A final topping of evaporated milk, condensed milk, or coconut milk is drizzled over the mountain of ice along with red rose syrup and sarsi syrup. To cater to the palates of the modern customer, some stalls have even introduced novelty toppings such as durian, chocolate syrup and ice cream. There are also versions that shun the multi-coloured syrup and are served with just a drizzling of gula melaka syrup (gula=sugar) instead. (Sourced from Wiki)

Cendol (pronounced /ˈtʃɛndɒl/) is a traditional dessert originating from South East Asia which is still popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar (where it is known as Mont let saung), Singapore, Vietnam, and Southern Thailand (where it is called lortchorng singapore ลอดช่องสิงคโปร์).

The dessert’s basic ingredients consist of coconut milk, a worm-like jelly made from rice flour with green food coloring (usually derived from the pandan leaf), shaved ice and palm sugar. Next to these basic recipe, other ingredients such as red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, creamed corn, might also be included. (Sourced from Wiki)

There are a thousand and one ways to celebrate summer and beat the heat. Ice cream and halo-halo still top my list.  However we spend the season, the best is to enjoy the time being with the ones we love.

What are your best memories of summer?

Have a great ‘fruitful’ weekend, everyone!

EAT.SMILE.SWIM

The 2 storey-5 bedroom penthouse at this appartment has been our temporary home in Penang for the past 8 months (but for my wife and kid, only after they’ve arrived last mid March).
Although Tina, Gabby and I are extremely excited to transfer to our “new home” before the month of July ends (oh yes, we thank the Lord we already found a new condo unit to rent- deposit given!), Gabby still likes it here because the place has swimming pool and playground too… nice, isn’t it?
Our little-big boy usually spends his afternoon frolicking in the pool.
But when a party for all Pinoys and our families was planned, the venue was hands down given to our colleagues’ ‘home-away-from-home’ called Kondominium Cassia at Raja Uda, Butterworth, Penang which has more gorgeous facilities than our present humble abode.
The Filipino MD-lecturers and our families opted for this beautiful resort-like appartment as the venue of our casual get-together party for our kids and some birthday celebrators few weeks ago.
Tina, Gabby and I didn’t miss the fun! We shared reasonable contribution for the party and even volunteered to bring 2 sets of these :
pâte de crevettes, mangues vertes et aubergines frites (sa madaling salita : homemade bagoong, hilaw na mangga at pritong talong!) Tina sauteed the shrimp paste, sliced the green mangoes and ehem, I fried the aubergine! sige na nga, pritong talong! LOL!
The get-together made us feel we are one with the world, hehehe… My wife felt she’s in a beauty pageant representing the Philippines…

beauties all! from right to left : Dr. Phoo from Myanmar, Ms. Tina and son Kostyk from Russia & Zamboanga, Lyn - Phoo's sister also from Myanmar and of course, my very own -Tina & Gabby from the Philippines

Tina candidly told me that she could have won it effortlessly if there’s any pageant if the contest would give more points on talent portion rather than question and answer! haha! *nose bleed* daw sya, LOL!

Definitely, a party, simple or grand, would be incomplete without something to pig-out.  The spread contained these yummies…

It felt like a feast for all of us Pinoys!

their sweet smiles say it all

Tina and I didn’t take a dip (read : I was a cat in my past life, LOL!) so Gabby was accompanied by his floater and our colleagues at the pool.

floating happily at the wonderful swimming pool of Kondominium Cassia

The moment of being a kid again is priceless!

Life will be so much better if we can only live our lives as simple as children do. *easier said than done, though!*

Imagine a dreamy life where problems and hassles do not exist and all you need to do is to eat, smile and swim!

Tina and Gelo's pride!

How is your summer or whatever season you’re having in your part of your world?

THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, LA UNION (part 2): FOOD PORN!

26 July 2010, Monday–THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, a Santorini-inspired piece of paradise in La Union, Philippines offers infinite possibilities.  Beyond its Mediterranean architecture and interiors that provides leisure and recreation, it’s a foodie’s heaven.

I had the privilege of experiencing the world-class resort and savoring the food with 9 other passionate Filipino bloggers as we gave in to the resorts’ irresistible invitation to a 3-day-FREE accomodation and tour.

After 6 hour-trip from our meeting place in Makati City to the resort itself at Poro Point,  we were brought first to VEGAS CAFE; a restaurant and bar adjacent to the FIESTA CASINO of  THUNDERBIRD RESORTS. It was indeed a fitting feast 3 days before I submit myself to a whole new universe as I begin to work as a medical college lecturer abroad.

I smiled from ear to ear when I learned that we’ll be having an order-and-eat-what-you-want meals during our stay.  How can you resist  such prelude to indulgence? :)   Best of all, everything’s FREE (thank you, TBR!).

Take a peek at OUR GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURES

Ala Carte LUNCH at VEGAS CAFE, TBRPhilippines

A basket of freshly baked breads and butter…

CHEF’S SALAD, PhP 250+ Iceberg lettuce topped with strips of Swiss cheese, chicken, beef, & your own choice of dressing. Surprisingly, the serving was humongous! Larger than anyone’s appetite. :)

SEAFOOD CHOWDER SOUP, PhP 150+, One of the BEST tasting chowder I’ve ever tasted.

SUSHI-SASHIMI COMBO, PhP 750+ This was my personal choice for lunch. Beautiful, isn’t it?  :) Yummy too!

BULGOGI, PhP 385+ a Korean dish made of thinly sliced beef marinated in slightly sweetened soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic.

SEAFOOD MEDLEY (left), PhP 480+ Grilled prawns, salmon and dory. SURF and TURF (right), PhP 500+

I washed down my Japanese treat by savoring a tall glass of ripe mango shake…

Desserts, anyone?

PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE (left), PhP 200;  Puree of pumpkin with cream. PANACOTTA (right), PhP 200 Italian rum and milk pudding.

Then I and other fellow bloggers had a cup of brewed coffee.

End of lunch.  Burp! :)

Let’s move on to OUR DINNER on the same day.

At around 8PM, all of  the 10 invited bloggers were shuttled to the Vegas Cafe again after a relaxing afternoon at our cozy and spacious deluxe rooms. Dinner was ala carte again and we’re not complaining. :)

Everyone agreed to mostly Pinoy and few Asian dishes for our sumptuous supper.

CRAB and CORN SOUP (left)POTATO SALAD and SEAFOOD PENNE PASTA (right) from the spread.

KARE-KARE, a personal favorite; however I want the peanut sauce creamier and thicker.

CRISPY PATA. Let’s not talk about calorie count, ok?  Indulge, whenever possible. LOL! :)

Thai dishes, anyone?

KHAO PAD (left) and PAD THAI (right).

SINIGANG na SUGPO, another classic Pinoy favorite. The more sour, the better.

CHICKEN INASAL (left) and FOUR SEASONS (right)

After dinner, half of the group decided to burn the calories by strolling the distance of about several meters from  Vegas Cafe to the hotel. Perhaps, most of them absorbed the thoughts I shared about digestion and food intake.

A glorious morning came the next day and I thought I woke up in Greece. :)

We were advised to take a heavy buffet-breakfast at OLIVES, the restaurant located near the lobby, enough for us to last for the scheduled City tour that day.

Few minutes after I had those 2 plates, a glass of fresh four seasons juice and a cup of coffee, we headed to our La Union City Tour (last part of this blog series).

We had a long but fun day that we savored every minute in places we’ve been to.  We were brought to a locally famous and quaint hole-in-wall restaurant in San Fernando City. It’s called HALO-HALO DE ILOKO which boasts of, what else but Halo-Halo and other Ilocano dishes.

This late merienda was another new stimuli for my palate.

clockwise : OKOY TIKYOSKO, PhP 85+ : shrimps, sprouted monggo, squash, malunggay leaves. It was a vegetarian feast. HALO-HALO de Iloko, around P135+ : has all the ingredients plus a bit of strawberry that wasn’t found in my glass. :( EMPAREDADOS or Native Hamburger/Sandwich PhP 80+. It’s a pair of fried buns with Vigan longganisa, mayonnaise filling.

That was indeed a satisfying heavy merienda.

After which, we were brought back to the hotel and since my fellow blogger and I have to leave that night for Manila while the rest of the group still had their 3rd day at the Casino the next day, we were offered to try pizza at OLIVES before being heading home.

Wood fire-baked pizza…

We tried PIZZA ILOKANO, PhP 400+ (left): Tomato concasse, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, Vigan longganisa, tocino, tuna and onion.and PIZZA QUATTRO STAGIONI, PhP 470+ (right) : Kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, parma ham, fresh mushrooms, and mozzarella.

Good food.

Enticing place.

Great company.

One passion.

Thank you, THUNDERBIRD RESORTS and to my fellow Pinoy bloggers–Ann, Kristel, Betty, Sol, Hanna, Vince, Estan, Oggie and Ferdz, it’s a pleasure to have dined with all of you in these digestive feasts :)   Burp!

THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, LA UNION (part 1): THE SUBLIME EXPERIENCE

Few weeks ago, I received an irresistible invitation via email to join a 3-day-bloggers’ tour and experience the only 5-star-hotel with world-class accomodation in Northern Philippines. The timing was too perfect because it gave me an ample chance to enjoy an ultimate vacation few days before I join the league of Filipino doctors and fathers working abroad.

Dramatically set in a poetic cliff of Poro Point Freeport Zone and overlooking South China Sea, THUNDERBIRD RESORTS is more than a luxurious leisure and recreation facility.  It offers a slice of Santorini-experience without leaving the country.  Its Mediterranean-inspired architecture, hotel service and amenities at par with international standards are worth the 6-hour-trip from Makati City to its location in San Fernando City, La Union.

An absolute feast for the senses.

Picturesque design…

The Grecian dome ceiling  is a welcoming attraction at the reception area of the hotel.

Breathtaking view from the lobby.

Santorini Lounge near the lobby provides a relaxing area where you can view the pool and crystal blue sea.

Who would not appreciate this?

Spontaneity in details makes this resort distinctly beautiful.

Bravo for being kid-friendly! :)

I like the idea of having the FIESTA CASINO and VEGAS CAFE located a bit far from the main hotel; making the entire experience more comfortable for guests with children.

More than having a casino, several restaurants within the hotel and the vicinity, an amphitheater and recreational facilities, THUNDERBIRD RESORTS is an event center.

Momentous celebrations like a romantic wedding proposal that eventually leads to bride walking down the aisle with the scenic view as the wedding backdrop, or probably just an intimate family gathering or a company team building, THUNDERBIRD RESORTS is a perfect venue for simple to grandiose activities.

Take a peek at one of the most comfy beds in a spacious deluxe room I slept on…felt like waking up in Santorini. :)

The rooms have verandas that give the visitors a priceless view of South China Sea.

And did I already tell you that I got to drive a golf cart when we visited their greens?

photo taken using my point & shoot cam by ace photographer/travel blogger & my roommate, estan cabigas of langyaw.com

The hills are alive at The Cliffs Golf & Beach Club, Thunderbird Resorts…

Do you play Golf? …I don’t. :)

Wonderful view at the greens…

Thunderbird Resorts have been existing in other countries like Peru, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and has been operating in the Philippines for 5 years now; the first in Asia before it opens another resort in India soon.  Thunderbird Resorts Philippines has 2 branches, one in Poro Point Freeport Zone, San Fernando City, La Union (the one we enjoyed) and in Binangonan, Rizal.

Thunderbird Resorts in Poro Point, La Union offers Pitter Patter promo that runs from June 1 to September 30, 2010.  An ultimate vacation lifestyle experience that includes a relaxing resort stay, delicious breakfast for 2, 15-minute massage, unlimited internet access and more for as low as PhP 4,800 nett/weekday and PhP 5,300 nett / weekend. Reservations recommended. Details are subject to change without prior notice.

WAWA

Dear Gabby,

Sometimes I wanted a quick escape from hassles of daily living in a nearby province where fresh air and tranquility are common.

I envy your Lolo Ben, Tito Mac &  Ninong Melton and 2 of their friends for what they did last Sunday.  While we’re lazy spending the first day of the week at home, they went to Wawa Dam in Rodriguez, Rizal, the province formerly known as Montalban.  It’s the town that comes after San Mateo, Rizal, Marikina  and Quezon Cities.  Your Tito Mac is generous to share his photos taken from their trip.

The provincial welcome sign has the dam’s replica on top…

No, they didn’t go there via four-wheeled vehicle but by bikes. You know how your 60-year-old Lolo Ben is still very groovy as he continuously joins cycling events like Tour of the Fireflies with your uncles..Look how he’s geared to the form that day! Japorms ang tatay ko, ano? :)

While your Tito Mac was in his usual cheerful self…

It’s amazing they’ve reached the place after long hours of bicycling…Your Tito Mac and Ninong Melton’s second time to be there; and first for Daddy or your Lolo Ben…

The scenes at Wawa Dam are simply inviting …

Rock-filled stream…

lush greens…

crystal waters…

They went to market to buy something to grill…

At the area near the stream, they parked their bikes.

Then they grilled these…

and had a fun picnic…

I can just imagine how relaxing the atmosphere in that part of Rizal…

perfect spot to doze off…

beside a river that runs through it...

Kiapo or water cabbages (where the name of Quiapo, Manila was rooted) are also abundant.  Nice!

I think this is the must-see-spot in Wawa Dam : the two great rocks where Bernardo Carpio , being of great strength, was believed to be trapped.  When you study Philippine folklores in years to come, you’ll learn that  some say he is keeping the mountains from crashing into each other (similar to the Greek titan Atlas holding up the sky), and some versions say he is trapped and trying to break free. When Bernardo Carpio shrugs his shoulder, an earthquake occurs.  (Sourced via Wiki).

The merging of those streams underneath those legendary mountains is just awesome!  Who knows we might find time and go there someday too.

For now, enjoy your bike; you’ll have your own adventures when you grow up! :)

I love you, anak!

:) Tatay-doc

MUCH ADO ABOUT SUMMER

I have a confession to make.

This may disappoint most of you but Tina and I are not fond of going to the beach during Summer. We prefer to soak under cold shower (together? that’s another story that does not deserve a blog post! LOL!)  rather than bathe and immerse on water under the scorching heat of Philippine Sun.

Other than budget consideration during peak season, we enjoy sand, water and what beauty that nature has to offer when it’s not thickly populated.  As you may know, my family’s recent beach adventure was last week of October 2009  when BORACAY was in its quiescence…

Tranquility echoed every morning during our days in the island…

Ah, Boracay! When do we get to enjoy your crystal turquoise water and powdery sand again ?  It’s not only the beach that’s glorious in this island but digestive feasts too. Summer heat reminds me of spoonful cold treats we had from Boracay’s HALOWICH.

And since we’re not hitting the beach anytime soon, you may now have a clue of how we define SUMMER in our own way…

Yesterday, Tina, Gabby and I went to Iceberg in their Timog Ave. branch to have bowls of Halo-Halo.

What’s a Summer in Manila without it?

For only PhP 98, I enjoyed macapuno balls, slice of peach, sweet plantain, corn kernels, corn flakes, jackfruit strips, ube jam, gulaman on shaved ice topped with ube and strawberry-flavored ice cream!

While Tina and Gabby chose to savor Caramel Flan with Mangoes and Vanilla Ice Cream. Yum! :)

Summer for us, is a great excuse to devour on these cold gastronomic pleasures.  :)

What’s your favorite food fit for Summer?

How are you spending your Summer?  I bet most of you are busy treading on most shores of this archipelago.

Have fun!  :D

SEBASTIAN’S

My family and I have been keeping our love affair with gelato, yogurt and ice cream.  Perhaps with different intensity but we love ’em all. :)   Personally, they’re few of my comfort foods.  I always say that the world is incomplete and unhappy, at least for me, without these cold treats.

We may have forgotten the brands but the tastes were so remarkable that even after 5 years had passed, my wife and I can still remember how rich and creamy ice creams in Auckland, NZ were.

Locally, we’ve only sampled a handful of delights.  We like GELATONEAMICI + CARAMIA  for gelati. GOLDEN SPOON , RED MANGO , YOH-GURT-FROZ, THE WHITE HAT,   FYI FROYO  for yogurts.  SELECTA GOLD SERIES,  ARCE DAIRY (Have you tried their Atis / Sugar Apple flavor?), MAGNOLIA  and of course, HAAGEN-DAZS  which tops our favorites for ice cream.

Last Sunday, another would-be-favorite has been added to our list. We’ve finally tasted premium ice cream from SEBASTIAN’S…

Try hard not to drool  blink and feast your eyes on the 3  flavors we enjoyed…

CHOCOLATE CREAM PIE

BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGH

They all taste great! :D   Tina, Gabby and I give Sebastian’s our two-thumbs up! And definitely we’ll come back soon for more flavors!

Can you match those 3 flavors to us as to who had what?  :D Katuwaan lang.

Special thanks to one of my blog-buddies, Ingrid who suggested for us to try Sebastian’s.  :)

Have a great weekend everyone. :D

BORACAY SERIES : THE BEACH FROM DAWN TO DUSK

This is my 3rd post in a series.

Boracay has its unique Filipino charm. It has the glorious sunrise and the most magnificent sunset.  And who can resist its turquoise crystal waters and sublime powdery sands?  My family and I are missing it already :D

Our first morning in this island paradise was truly unforgettable.  After a restful night, my wife, Tina, our 5-year-old son, Gabby and I made an effort to rise from our bed few minutes after 5AM to freshen up and hit the waters as early as 6AM.

Mother Nature has this scene to offer every sunny morning during off season at Boat Station 1…1Boracay beaches is divided into three boat stations – Boat Station 1 has the finest, pristine white sands comparable to talc.  As Boracay first-timers, we can’t help but to get few samples to bring home as a priceless souvenir :D

3finest sand in my hand

Since the area isn’t as busy and is less crowded than Station 2 and 3, the hotels here are too pricey than others but with best amenities and services.

We stayed at ESCONDIDO BEACH RESORT in Station 1; since it’s not a beach front hotel,  it’s budget-friendlier but nonetheless, relaxing, safe and with the warmest service too :D   Few steps from Escondido and after crossing the main street and passing through a sidewalk in between 2 beach front hotels, we’ve an access to the waters already…

2That second rectangular hole from the left served as our path to the beach.

Willy’s Rock, named after a beach front resort near it,  is one of the attractions in Boat Station 1.  It has impressive rock formation near the shores and a grotto of Our Lady.  4

It’s so amazing to see it on both high tide and low tide. 5

Breathtaking views of the white beach of Boracay can be best appreciated from the uppermost area of Willy’s Rock, all 360 degrees of it! :D 7

I guess anyone can enjoy Boracay at its most quiet moments during off seasons and every sunrise when most tourists and backpackers are still asleep or intoxicated with alcohol from a nightout.

Here’s another view from the top most area of Willy’s Rock …8

For people like us who lives in urban areas, this rock formation is a sight to behold… 9

We just can’t hide the fact that we’re enjoying Willy’s Rock that morning…Wala kasing ganito sa Greenbelt o TriNoma, LOL…

IMG_44581213IMG_4453

I found this signage very important that I wish everyone in Boracay, tourists or not, should always take into action. 6

When Tina and Gabby sat on the sand and played with it, I left them for a while to take a short walk from Willy’s Rock to the northern part of Boat Station 1…

Next are  my “NOT OUR HOTEL”  photos…LOL…

Seriously, you might be interested and consider these beach front hotels on your visit to the island.  But then again, you know now what I recommend. :D IMG_4502Sea Wind Boracay Island Resort

15Sur Boracay Resort

16Ambassador Hotel…

17Pearl of the Pacific Boracay

18Residencia Boracay

Other than those in my photos, the other notable upscale resorts in Boat Station 1  are Discovery Shores, Fridays and the newest addition to them – Shangri La Boracay :D   If you have the budget to splurge, go ahead, by all means indulge!  It’s your vacation anyway! :D

As I went back to Willy’s Rock, I noticed my family became too busy making sand patterns…IMG_4492

I tried making one, but I just left it with Tina and Gabby :D

IMG_4517IMG_4515IMG_4521IMG_4362

We ate breakfast at the hotel, took showers and headed again to the beach.  We walked and walked and walked from Boat Station 1 to 2 where most restaurants, establishments including ATM machines are located (I’ll post about D’mall and our eat outs next on this series).

In the afternoon, Boat station 2 has these sights to boast…19

PARAW or sail boats with two outrigger canoes (or for us Pinoys, katig) predominate the shores of Boat Station 2 when winds are present every afternoon… Paraw with boat men are all for rent with price starts from PhP 600 per hour.  Did we try it? No. Gabby, Tina (and I) preferred to pig out rather than to sail :D   20

Actually, my wife has vertigo making her too anxious of an attack during airplane and boat rides.  So we rather dip into the water, eat, savor the wind, sand, and sun than sail or take island hopping… Island hopping which usually takes more than 4 hours going to Puka Beach and Crystal Cove and other isles near Boracay costs about PhP 1,500 and up; some offer snorkeling gears and free snacks and buffet lunch too.

IMG_4346IMG_4351Seeing all these made me realize why Boracay is considered one of the best beaches in the world.  Tourism is alive regardless of season in this island. :D

IMG_4349

Other than riding the paraw or sail boats, island hopping or taking glass-bottom boat rides, parasailing and scuba-diving can also be enjoyed.  Most people we saw also have henna tattoos on their bodies which are so affordable from PhP 50 up and stays temporarily on the skin for 2 weeks.  We never tried it for 2 reasons - we fear of paying damages when sheets at the hotel are stained and it’s not just us to have tattoos, permanent or otherwise.   You can also ask and pay some women to braid your hair or get some relaxing massage by the beach or inside their facilities.  Other attractions or must-do in Boracay is riding an ATV/all terrain vehicles which costs roughly thousands of pesos depending on the duration of driving. We saw some of these on the main road with the local tricycles and other vehicles.  Since ATVs don’t have its own trail,  driving it puts anyone to an accident-prone area especially with reckless drivers.  For some, it’s part of the thrill.  To each his own. IMG_4345

IMG_4534

Fantastic is an understatement.  Despite the commercialism, we wish Boracay could be maintained as serene and as clean as this so more local and foreign tourists can enjoy Boracay for many years.

IMG_4350

It’s a common thing during weekends to spot marvelous sand castles  along the shores and in front of those beach front hotels.  Pictures may be taken for a voluntary donation of any amount.   Before dusk, these sand castles are illuminated by lighted bottles.IMG_4378

IMG_4385

Indeed, Boracay is such a fascinating island to explore.  It’s so gorgeous that one can easily be lured and seduced by its beauty. It’s too enticing to people who long to leave the busy life even temporarily.

We’re just glad to finally enjoyed it :D

What’s your best memory of the beaches in Boracay?

I DRANK ROXAS BLVD !

It’s so darn hot here in Manila at 32 degrees celsius up & one simple way to cool down is by drinking our favorite refreshments & chillers. Other than the famous Filipino “Halo-Halo”, cold fresh juices & smoothies are best to enjoy during summer. One of our favorite kiosks in malls offer the best smoothies – JUICE AVENUE!

I want something with mango, while my wife Tina hates anything with banana (in beverages only that is, NO PUN INTENDED!)… So she ordered TRAFFIC which is a smoothie combination of apple, orange & mango. And I drank ROXAS BOULEVARD which is a smoothie concuction of mango, pineapple, guava, & banana.

At JUICE AVENUE, all drinks are named after intersting streets & places…

img_0244
There’s even one called FREEDOM PARK that gives you the freedom & free will to choose the fruits to be mixed.

My son Gabby tried the 2 smoothies & agreed both are simply delicious!

It’s worth your sip !

EAT’S A DAY IN CUBAO

I left the house the other day for some errands;
I needed to go early so I managed to eat breakfast late outside.
I found myself in BUTTER DINER which is a stone throw away
from Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

At first, I was skeptical to eat my first meal for that day there
for I saw some people drinking buckets of beer early in the morning.
Those guys probably just finished their work shift at a nearby call center.
Heck, my stomach was screaming for something
so I had this plate soon after I walked in to order…

four bacon strips, 2 scrambled eggs, french toasts with maple syrup & butter & a mug of hot brewed coffee

four bacon strips, 2 scrambled eggs, french toasts with maple syrup & butter & a mug of hot brewed coffee

this meal was decent enough for less than PhP 200 including charges.

It was my first time in BUTTER DINER but it existed since God knows when
at the ground floor of Shopwise in Araneta Center, Cubao.
The waiter had a smile & was friendly & quick to take the orders.

butter_dinner

The interiors was hip, only if they have kept it more crisp & tidy.
There was a feeling of 70s to 80s era inside that small resto
where memorabilia from those years in Hollywood, both in music & movies
were used as decors on the wooden & glass walls.

red shoes as telephone ? mirror, mirror on the wall..

A couple of hours after, I met my son Gabby & wife Tina
at Gateway mall before we hit the grocery.
It was lunch time then so we decided to eat.
I tried the FIESTA PLATTER from TACO BELL..

fiesta rice, seasoned ground beef, fiesta salsa salad, potato bites with cheese sauce

PhP 129, another affordable meal !

It was OK but too plain for me.
I prefer TACO & BURRITO of TACO BELL.
Tina asked me if I wanted something for dessert.
I suggested Razon’s Halo-Halo.

PhP 73 per Halo-Halo.
Not bad for thinly crushed ice, which I so love
very unlikely of the other Halo-halo that taste like ice-pebbles, lol.
It only has leche flan, macapuno & sweet bananas as “halo”
making it uniquely Razon’s. =)

FIVE MOOS

It was only last Monday (after the TGI Fridays Kiddie League Membership Kick Off Party) that we got a chance to try FIVE COWS in Trinoma. We heard about the ice cream cakes they offer which made me miss more the Magnolia Ice Cream House along Aurora Blvd Extension in Quezon City during my wonder years. Other than Magnolia Ice Cream cakes, I still remember my preference to banana split with barquillos, which until now is a hit combination specially during summer. I’m not so sure if the old Magnolia Ice Cream House is still on operations, but I guess not. Nonetheless, there are other stores now like FIVE COWS that offer similar treats to food enthusiasts like us.

hg1

We were already full after munching at TGIF but were too weak to resist the temptation of FIVE COWS so we just let go with the flow. As we sat in the middle of the resto, we saw Gabby’s eyes glued at the glass fridge where ice cream cakes were on display.
He immediately spotted a slice of ice cream cake called Rocky Almond Slice, PhP 160.

I asked Tina to make her order for us to try a variety of tasteful sweets…the menu alone is really a feast to sight.

wl 56

Aside from Rocky Almond Ice Cream Cake, we also enjoyed a couple of ice cream flavors like Bubble Gum Blast, PhP110 and Mocha Mud Pie PhP135 in huge servings all gone in 10 minutes!

There’s a lot more in the menu to try on our next visit to Five Cows. Definitely we’ll try FLAMING ALASKA soon. You’ll know what it is when you visit the resto ice cream bar & what makes it intriguing & mouth-watering…

OUR ISLAND COVE ADVENTURE

It’s natural for mothers to constantly make efforts for family bonding. And my mom is no exception. She usually schedules trips, eat-outs or anything for us to do or to go somewhere and enjoy. On the same month of last year, she booked a hotel accomodation for 3 days and scheduled a trip to Baguio for us to experience Panagbenga Flower festival. This year, we agreed to go to Island Cove Hotel & Leisure Park in Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite; a small town of about an hour drive from Manila (less the traffic). My parents went there 2 weeks ago to celebrate the anniversary of their elopement. We saw their photos taken from their overnight stay and did not expect that our whole family will be there 2 weeks after.

Last Saturday, February 07, we were fetched before 5AM to catch the buffet breakfast at Something Fishy at Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City. The buffet breakfast is offered from 12MN to 10AM daily at PhP 114 pax exclusive of drinks; reasonable price for a wide variety of breakfast yummies. It’s a favorite not only of families but most employees usually call center agents around the area. Something fishy’s buffet breakfast includes arroz caldo, mami, sausages, mini pancakes, beef tapa, boiled and fried rice, fried scrambled eggs, palabok (local pasta with rice-based sauce), pancit canton (chinese noodle), tinapang bangus (smoked dried milkfish), adobong manok, kakanin (rice cakes) like bibingka, biko or some call it sinok-mani, and maja and others.

As we were escorted by the staff to our reserved seats for 11 adults and 4 kids, my brother’s fiancee’s eyes quickly spotted Sam Milby as he dines with his friends. And before he went out of the resto, my mom, as candid as always did not miss the chance and asked for a souvenir shot from Sam with my son Gabby and niece Kelly who are frequent viewers of his teleseryes. One of Sam’s friends was nice to volunteer to take the picture for them.

After Eastwood City we headed straight to Kawit, Cavite where Island Cove is located. It’s a leisure park stretched in a 36-hectare island with swimming pools, animal land that includes an aviary, a butterfly house, a monkey & aligator farm, recreational facilities for badminton, volleyball, basketball, tennis, billiards and even a gym. It also has function rooms, bars where concerts are held, a spa, playground for kids, and a 96-room hotel other than the 17 cottages where one can relax. I also found out recently from a broadsheet article that the managing director of this tourism spot is the TV celebrity & former Congressman Gilbert Remulla. No wonder Island Cove is apparently well maintained to be a place where one can commune with nature.

I was so impressed with the cleanliness & availability of facilities; never expect to find electric sockets even in cottages & huts to plug in mobile phones, laptops and other electronic gadgets. Island Cove is also a wi-fi area so I got to check my e-mails and did some updates on my social networks. My favorite part of Island Cove is the Fishing Village where we had our lunch in a hut on stilts, enjoyed the sea breeze, while being serenaded by roving local string band and singers. Those dining and resting areas on huts on stilts are the best part of Island Cove where one can feast on Filipino food and get to breathe fresh air and think of nothing but enjoy nature. It’s really a relaxing sanctuary. I really appreciate that I had a chance to forget my worries at least for a day when we were there. You have to experience it, or at least, enjoy first my photos here…

My son, nephew and nieces enjoyed the swimming pools with clean and impressive facilities of Oceania Water Park within Island Cove. Swimming or not, one has to pay the entrance fee of PHP250 which includes the entrance to animal land and aviary etc.

We left Island Cove at around 4PM and decided to take merienda at Digman in Bacoor, Cavite on the way back to Manila. Digman Halo-halo with sandosenang halo originated in Cavite before they branched out to SM malls nationwide.

ABRIL…

Last week, I was invited to a job interview through email for I was APPLYING (again and again and again- got to have additional jobs for my regular job doesnt pay that much and the review center I was working with for a year now hasnt paid me in full for my work last March 1, 2008 ; TALKING ABOUT MONEY-MATTERS NOWADAYS…tsktsktsk…)  as an instructor in a well-established review center which is a franchise abroad. I just applied through jobstreet.com.ph and according to that website, my resume was viewed 5 times by the employer and was "under consideration."  The interview set last Thursday April 3 at 10AM was done in the review center office at TM Kalaw Center Bldg, by the program director who’s a very accomplished nurse-doctor. I was interviewed for one whole hour. The other applicant waiting in the lounge for her turn thought that I was already asked to do a teaching demo or a mock-lecture for she waited that long. I enjoyed the interview. It was another learning-experience. It’s good to meet and talk to people whom you can learn from. It will be a great opportunity, just in case I get hired, for me to work in that office not only financially (the offer is P700-P1,200 per hour of 2 -3x a week lecture), but I guess the staff including the american owner of the franchise are kind-hearted people. After the interview the administrative officer told us to expect an email for the schedule of a mock-lecture in which the owner, staff and former reviewees can evaluate applicants’ performance.

SATURDAY, April 05 was a date to forget. I nodded to my dean’s request for me to see and explain at her office those who failed in my subject (Medical-Surgical Nursing). I came to the office earlier than expected (as usual, I am PUNCTUAL and PROFESSIONAL as ever) only to know that the dean will be late for a reason and my original class record only for the particular section which I had 12 failures (total number of failures for my 6 sections alone inspite of the remedial exam which I never give previously : 24 ) is missing for a week and the office, even the dean herself has NO EXPLANATION how it was LOST !!! Although I have a photocopy of all of my records, I told them that it is an INSULT on my part as a member of the faculty for I had worked on that class record for an entire semester and it’s UNFAIR for me who COMPLIED religiously to the office’s requirements whether it was misplaced or deliberately was lost because of CARELESSNESS.  I knew the 2 secretaries of the office for four years now and this problem never happened to us.  The College of Nursing office looks like a warehouse or a stockroom now with so many MESS and not a dignified office of the dean as it is suppose to be.  IT SCREAMS THE NEED TO REORGANIZE EVERYTHING.

In my four years in the academe, I HAD  N E V E R   EXPERIENCE SUCH THING !

MOVING ON to a lighter note – also on that day, I received a text message and a phone call from Doc Neal, a good friend of 15 years now, who also happens to be ninong to my son Gabby, to attend to his son’s CHRISTening the following day.  We both invited another friend and agreed to be present the next day in their place in Muntinlupa.

Sunday, April 6, I and my wife Tina & son Gabby met Loreto at Starbucks in wherelse but our meeting place for more than decades now – Shangri-la mall and hurried to Muntinlupa to grace the baptism of Lance SeBASTIan P. Argana. IT WAS TRULY RELAXING for MY SPIRIT especially on that weekend, to witness a child being CHRISTened. The date of Basti’s baptism is also the birthdate of his mom – Doc Vec.  It was a reunion for us to see again Neal and his parents.

the blogger took these photos of his wife Ite, and son Gabby, Doc Neal & his son Basti &  friend LG.

Loreto and my family went to Trinoma after the party (from Muntinlupa in the South, to Trinoma in the North) My son Gabby wanted to watch HORTON, a cartoon-movie about animals. But all the cinemas at Trinoma last Sunday were closed to public probably because of the poor airconditioning that day. So Gabby settled for TOYS R US store…

WE BOUGHT A NEW CAR !!! – a remote control car that is… LOL… It’s a red mini cooper with full functions – headlights, side turns, etc. More than Gabby, I was excited to play it myself, hehehe.

We munched at Superbowl of China for an early dinner then we went home and as I read my email, the admin officer of the review center that I am applying at is inviting me to a demo scheduled on April 9, at 4:30PM. That moment, I decided to do a mock lecture on DIABETES MELLITUS, injected some NCLEX-sample questions to my powerpoint presentation for it to be problem-based.

April 8 – Tuesday – I bought a new laser pointer at NBS for my demo the next day. I went to Gateway Mall with Gabby to meet Ite after her O.R. duty.  Gabby enjoyed in his fave place -Timezone and when Mommy Ite came in, we ate merienda at its foodcourt and Gabby begged for another chance to play at Timezone.

Gabby : Mommy ‘Te, Timezone ulit.

Ite : Anak, next time na, naglaro ka na kanina e.

Gabby : O sige na nga, STARBUCKS na lang…

My 3-year-old kid knows how to bargain (for something better) already.

April 9 – Wednesday. I came to TM Kalaw Center Bldg. 30 minutes earlier than required. I met my co-applicants. I learned we were narrowed down to 5 from the many who applied for the position. I was told to do the demo FIRST, and agreed on it. The staff asked us applicants to fill out a form for us to encircle the topics that we are comfortable with in order to guide them on the assignments of topics to be discussed should we become part of the company. THE DEMO was over. Though it was limited to 20-minute discussion, I had FUN doing it

At least if I will not get the position, it’s another one for the books..  The staff of that NCLEX/CGFNS review center was sweet enough to treat us with pizza and coke from Shakey’s. We learned from them that it’s the habit of the office to treat applicants that way and also the enrollees every after review program.  After all of us 5 applicants had done our demo, the owner shook our hands and thanked us for coming over.  He even said that what we did was better than American Idol, hahaha… He asked us to take our final bow infront of his former reviewees.  For them to offer pizza to their applicants was sweet. But it is sweeter to hear APPLAUSE from the people who listened to our demo.

JUST LIKE MY PREVIOUS JOB HUNTING, which I also blogged here, I AM ONLY TAKING CHANCES…

Till then… THANKS !
