SOMETHING SPECIAL OTHER THAN THE FOOD

Apparently, food taste, ambiance and service must be impeccable to complete either a casual or a fine dining experience. But have you ever considered the importance, or at least the impact of a decent menu to a restaurant or even to a modest eatery?

I wonder if people appreciate menu in any restaurant before savoring their orders.

Whether the menu is on a thick, laminated or fancy paper, written in chalk on a board, simple or stylish, a volume of ordinary diners are usually more concerned on what’s listed on the menu, rather than how it looks. Well, guess what? I was thinking the same way too! :P This was before my family and I dined at Chicago Ribs in Plaza Gurney Mall, Penang last month.

Just before heading to Hard Rock Hotel Penang to grace their invitation for a 3D2N accomodation & to sample & review their food & beverage, Tina, Gabby and I had to fill up our tummies for late lunch.  It was almost 2PM and our stomachs were all growling. Borborygmi (stomach sounds) became audible even without stethoscopes, hahaha! Tina and I wanted to grab quick bites but not from any fastfood because we had enough for that week. I suggested for us to try for the very first time, Chicago Ribs and the two loves of my life agreed.

After the wait staff handed us their menu, a very long moment of silence lorded on our table.

With Chicago Ribs’ broadsheet-themed-menu in full and vibrant colors and written in readable fonts, it dawned on me that a restaurant menu is as essential as its contents. It seems like the most integral ingredient to any dish that any restaurant could offer. Menus are reflective of the cuisine, ambiance and overall style of the food place, thus it should be enticing enough and compelling for diners to order and order more! :D

Enough with the cheap thoughts; let’s get down to business. Here’s another shameless display of what we wolfed down in Chicago Ribs.

Tina had a gorgeous plate of seasoned salmon and coleslaw while I sampled bacon and cheese burger and onion rings; both platters were served with generous amount of french fries. Our little prince enjoyed his four-cheese-pizza; Gabby’s a purist when it comes to one of his favorite junk foods, he doesn’t want any toppings on his pizza. Over all, we’re satiated and satisfied with our orders. But where’s the ribs? The name of this American restaurant and its fantastic menu boast of Chicago Pork Ribs! We should have tried either their ribs or steaks. Perhaps, next time! ;)

GLORIOUS FOOD PORN @ HARD ROCK HOTEL PENANG

Indulgence is a must when spending quality time with the family or with friends. My family and I are very grateful to the people of Hard Rock Hotel Penang for they perfectly know how to pamper their guests across all ages by providing A COMPLETE SENSORY EXPERIENCE.

You’ve probably read my first post about our family’s grand experience (blog post HERE!). Now, here’s the conclusion of my 2-part-blog-series about Hard Rock Hotel Penang; I’m ending it with everything that satisfied our digestive tracts. :)  WARNING : FOOD PORN AHEAD! You may want to drink a glassful of cold water first before scrolling down this post. FEAST YOUR EYES! ENJOY! *wink*  

OUR FRIDAY DINNER @ STARZ DINER :  THE GREAT AMERICAN BUFFET with A TWIST

Shameless dispaly of indulgence. My plate # 1 : Fresh green salad, prawns, crayfish, salmon sashimi and cheese on a biscuit. Nom nom nom!!! :)

My plate # 2 : Mini Lamb Burger, Chicken Fingers, Mashed Potato, Chicken Wings and the most delicious and tender Smoked Beef Rib I’ve ever tasted! Tender. Delicious. *sigh*

Sarsi Longgan, anyone? Surprisingly, I liked it. It’s light, fruity and refreshing! :)

Dim sums in the morning? I had it for 2 consecutive weekend mornings. First in Singapore, then at Hard Rock Hotel Penang. It’s habit-forming and I’m not complaining! :)

OUR SATURDAY LUNCH @ PIZZERIA

There’s so many nice things to experience in Pizzeria at Hard Rock Hotel Penang. For one, diners get to enjoy watching the chefs tossing and flipping the pizza as per order.  It’s entertaining in its own way! The wannabe-chef in Gabby and me enjoyed it a lot! Having an open-air-ambiance, located few steps by the beach provide a very relaxing and casual dining feel; it’s non-intimidating. :) Italian dishes on the menu look and taste authentic too! Highly recommended, a really must-try in HRHP! :)

Watching the chefs prepare those hand-tossed pizzas is an extra special treat!

Antipasto combo includes that tender baby octopus, mushrooms and diced eggplant that are complimented by that mayo-based dip. :)

All about Pizzeria’s pizza : I liked the thin crusts and the fact that toppings are served generously!

My family’s (Gabby’s) choice : Pizza Contadina, 14 inch for sharing. Tomato-based topped with chicken, mushrooms, onions, the works!

My plate : Pasta Aglio Y Olio (spaghetti with garlic, olive oil and chili peppers- very Italian? eduate me!). My verdict : I liked it except that my tongue does not favor too much spice, nonetheless, I finished the entire plate.

Gnocchi for Tina. If you must know, this pasta dish called Gnocchi is made of potato-pillows. Those worm-like-pasta are actually made of potatoes and starch.

Hot chocolate for Gabby on a hot weather. Why not.

BEVERAGES compliment tasteful dishes best. Either alcoholic-based or otherwise, Sand Bar and Pizzeria in Hard Rock Penang, as well as Hard Rock Cafe have a long list of choices from their beverage menus. There’s something special for everyone; even Gabby was happy with his Hot Chocolate and Chocolate Smoothies drinks. :D

Fellow Blogger Chris’ choice : Mojito

For our Saturday Lunch : Watermelon and strawberry-based smoothies for me, Tropical Paradise, a fruity shake for Tina, and Hot Chocolate for Gabby.

On the very first weekend evening that we met the invited Malaysian awesome bloggers, Isaac, Chris and Emily with the very hospitable people of Hard Rock Penang, we had a few drinks at Hard Rock Hotel Penang’s Sand Bar, a very apt spot in the resort to chill out and watch the gorgeous sunset.

Gabby had his Chocolate Smoothies from the Sand Bar. While admittedly, Tina and I are non-alcoholics (and non-smokers too), we’re not kill-joy-junkies when an occasion calls for it. I made Tina sample the drink from Sand Bar’s menu called, PICKLED TINK which is an infusion of Smirnoff Raspberry Vodka, Pina Colada Mix and Fresh Strawberries Served Frozen and garnished with two Maraschino Cherries. ;)

OUR SATURDAY FAMILY DINNER @ HARD ROCK CAFE PENANG

Didn’t I tell you that the entire Hard Rock Hotel Penang including Hard Rock Cafe is very family-friendly? Gabby’s delighted at the sight of specially tailored menu for kids his age. He immediately scan it and made his choices. Oh and by the way, he had two cups fresh milk that went perfectly with his preference. Can you believe Hard Rock Cafe has fresh milk for kids? They have actually!  :)

I went up the mezzanine of Hard Rock Hotel Penang and a volume of Rock and Roll memorabilia are on display too to delight the music-loving patrons. Can you spot that Madonna costume?

Now, I have a confession to make. It’s a lame excuse, I know but because of my hectic schedule from my social media commitments for two consecutive weekends (Singapore Blog Awards 2012 and this Hard Rock Hotel Penang invitation), not to forget the stress that my wife and I are currently getting from work, I committed an isolated glitch. It slipped my memory that we’re instructed to try the “Hard Rock Cafe Eats Platter” special offering from HRC during the Fasting Month (Breaking of the Fast or Buka Puasa during Ramadhan) and for that I’m really sorry. :( What I remembered from the invite they sent in pdf via email and a printout form was the phrase that made me smile ear to ear :  “if you wish, you may order other stuff.” I forgot to memorize the phrase that came before it (“After the platter,” ) toinks!!!  We came earlier at Hard Rock Cafe that Saturday evening than our fellow blogger-buddies, thus my family and I were done with the last meal of the day earlier too. I immediately emailed Ms. Danielle Fung of HRHP to explain and verify everything after our sumptuous dinner. And I must say, they’re really generous. Everything’s waived and we didn’t pay a single ringgit. :D THANK YOU SO MUCH, HRHP & HRC! I just had to be honest about it. Now, continue to feast your eyes on our dinner that Saturday night…

Tina ordered this thick prawn-based soup. It could have been better if it’s not too salty.

Gabby got MILK. Fresh Milk. Two Cups. From HRC Penang! :)

We did not expect it too be in HUMONGOUS servings! I ordered JUMBO APPETIZER COMBO that includes Fried Spring Rolls, Chicken fingers, Potato Skins, Onion Rings and Buffalo Wings with respective dips! SEDAP, SARAP!!! The HRC EATS PLATTER that my family and I failed to sample (please see posted below) has similar offerings except it has Mini Lamb Burger and the others.

DISCLAIMER : Tina and I did NOT finish everything we ordered; we had most of them as takeaway (or in our words, take-out, take-home). It’s good that our seaview deluxe room in Hard Rock Hotel Penang has a personal fridge to temporarily store those delicious leftovers. We literally took them home the next day after check out. :)

Tina was astonished with the serving size of her order. TRIO COMBO. BBQ flavored Chicken, Beef Ribs and Roasted Beef Brisket (Believe me, it’s the most tender beef dish that I’ve tasted! Flavorful too! We loved it! The chicken’s OK too however, it’s so frequent for us to eat chicken so the beef ribs and roasted beef tantalized our taste buds effortlessly. )

My HRC Surf and Turf dinner plate : NEW YORK BEEF STEAK with PRAWN SKEWER. I had it medium well and I lost superlatives to describe it. I finished the side dishes that were also remarkably delicious plus the prawns, a personal favorite! I had the rest of the steak as to go.

I just had to take one more shot. Beautiful plate, isn’t it?

What’s a rock and roll meal without a sweet ending? DESSERTS we had included this CHOCOLATE MOUSSE, it’s Gabby and Tina’s choice. I liked it too!

My choice from the HRC dessert menu : Haagen Dazs Sundae Trio. Simply divine!

OUR SUNDAY BREAKFAST BUFFET @ STARZ DINER

Our last meal enjoyed at Hard Rock Hotel Penang during that 3D2N sponsored staycation was our breakfast buffet at Starz Diner. There’s a vast selection of bread for those who want to have carbo-loading. There’s a station for free-flowing morning drinks -from coffee, tea, fruit juices, fresh milk and chocolate. The difficult part was choosing what to chow down! So many food, so little time and limited gastric pits! Nevertheless, I’ll state it again that we’re very blessed to experienced all this. Thank you, God! Thank you, Hard Rock Hotel Penang! :D

I told you, that smoked salmon got my taste buds seriously. I love it to bits.

Tina and Gabby’s Roti Canai, one of Malaysia’s famous breads for breakfast, actually, it’s all good anytime of the day!

There’s only one thing that Tina and I regret of not doing in Hard Rock Hotel Penang and that’s failing to watch the Filipino Live Band called, Tiempo who plays at Hard Rock Cafe at 10:30PM that (every) weekend. We like watching live bands however the show’s strictly for adults 21 years old and older and Gabby didn’t allow us to sneak out leaving him in the room, even for an hour. Oh well, parenthood duties!!! We’re not complaining. At least it became one of the reasons to go back to HRHP and HRC in the near future. :)

ONE OF HIS FAVORITES

I had the soda, he enjoyed his Milo Ais until the last sip. Solb! :P

I know. When in Malaysia, you gotta eat Malaysian dishes and my palates’ craving for char koay teow, chicken satay with peanut sauce and nasi lemak as I post this. However, the matter becomes totally different when you’re dealing with an expat-kid’s cravings.

To some people it may be just plain, common and cheap Italian fast food, but to my 7-year-old son, Pizza Hut is pure happiness! It’s one of Gabby’s favorites. You know how the (expat) young ones are; they usually stick to their kiddie-tastes. Thank God a few branches exist here in Penang.

While Tina was attending to a rare weekend call of duty, Gabby and I explored Pulau Pinang and visited PENANG BUTTERFLY FARM after lunch, and headed back to Prangin Mall in George Town to give way to his long-time-request -to eat his favorite all-cheese-pizza (I had to make special request to prepare a zero-topping-pizza because my big boy is a purist when it comes to this Italian staple).

Just like being in other countries where usual fast food joints offer a twist in their menu, some of the dishes here are already varied and fares up to the Malaysian flavors (read: HOT, HOT, HOT!) Case in point –the PRAWN AGLIO OLIO that I orderd; a spaghetti pasta tossed in rich olive oil, minced garlic and special herbs and added spices, topped with sautéed savoury prawns.  Spicy defined at its truest sense; or perhaps, only by my gustatory receptors. I liked it, actually, as it’s tasteful, but I don’t think I’ll have it on a daily basis. Now, it’s another story if something has mozzarella. ;)

HALLOWEEN IN PENANG, 2011

At two years old, he was dressed as a pumpkin. The following year, as Count Dracula. And with his 3 years in Preschool –Nursery, Kindergarten and Preparatory, he wore ninja, scarecrow and tiger-chef costumes with appropriate face-paint makeups done specially by Tina.

From his school to malls in the Philippines such as our favorites, Greenbelt, TriNoma and Gateway, Gabby enjoyed collecting candies wearing his costumes we fancied every Halloween. He was even awarded as a student with “Most Creative Costume” in their school parties for 2 consecutive years.

Being abroad with limited budget doesn’t deter him from celebrating Halloween with other kids. Despite the fact that his school here and our appartment do not have similar activities, some malls here in Penang also conduct such events that add to priceless childhood happiness.  Although admittedly, it’s still best and more FUN doing all these things in our own country (read : we miss the malls and almost everything in Pinas!).

29 October 2011, Saturday –We arrived 10AM, so early at Queensbay Mall and headed directly to Starbucks Coffee, not only to grab quick morning drinks and bites but to be strategically near to the venue and stage where the Halloween Costume Contest for kids would be held. As I went to the counter to order a couple of ventis of frappuccinos (chocolate for Gabby, and dark mocha shared by Tina and me) and a plate of sausage roll, Tina didn’t waste any second and prepared her stuffs to do Gabby’s face paint.

If you must know, Tina doesn’t have any formal training, whatsoever on doing make ups. In fact, she only began wearing them few weeks after she first met me (she’ll kill me for this!). Apparently, she’s doing great with her face and with Gabby’s, isn’t she? :) This proves that Tina has many skills and talents. My wife isn’t only a diligent Operating Room nurse, a dedicated mother, a passionate educator herself, but also a creative makeup artist in her own right! :)  She even managed to work well with the face paint I bought from Toys R Us here despite it was far from the brands she told me to buy (supply of those things is rare in this part of Malaysia).

Gabby requested one of his favorites, Pizza Hut for lunch. We’re delighted with a pitcher of Mountain Dew, a small loaf of garlic bread, soup of the day and a large 7-cheese-pizza!

Pizza Hut's Seven Cheese Pizza : Romano, Monterey Jack, Parmesan, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Provolone, Mozzarella and Cheddar. So heavenly!

Gabby remains to be a purist when it comes to pizzas so he wants it nothing but cheese.  This new offerring from Pizza Hut was welcoming to him and in fact, we all found it sublime that I am craving for another slice as I write this. 

We finished lunch a few minutes prior to 1:30PM call time for all participants. We went back near Starbucks, confirmed Gabby’s attendance and got his number-tag. He was contestant # 6 out of 33 (or was it 34?) kiddie participants all in all.

His royal blue Chinese-inspired satin tunic was a hand-me-down costume from his eldest cousin, that was worn at our wedding reception almost 8 years ago. We only added a few accessories that Gabby chose himself from a store also in Queensbay Mall for him to look more like a Chinese pirate (uniquely wearing a Beijing Opera mask).

Each contestant was called, asked to walk on the ramp and introduce themselves a little and greet everyone a “Happy Halloween!”. It was the very first time we saw Gabby became shy on stage (read : he doesn’t have stage fright for he had won and placed in several declamation contests in his former school back home).

They paraded on the entire Ground floor before the winners’ names were announced.

He lost but nonetheless, we’re definite that he enjoyed the experience this year. Tina and I had fun too being with these kids! As token of participation, we’ll be issued after a week, a  free 8R picture officially taken by Queensbay Mall photographer during the event.

Honestly, when Tina and I saw her and her props, we knew she deserves to be the contest’s grand winner, but this 10-year old girl geared as a ‘Halloween dinner table’ only bagged second place.

Tina and I told Gabby that he had done a good job on stage and made him feel our very own champion. He is and he’ll always be, of course!:)

Gabby had fun, he even retained his face paint and costumes on until we reached home; except the fact that he only got candies and chocolates from the organizers of the event themselves because the shops and stores inside the mall didn’t prepare sweets like the way it’s done back home and else where.

How’s your Halloween?

Because obviously, we cannot visit cemeteries of our departed, we’ll just utter prayers for our late grandparents and relatives. It’s what we practice back home on top of trick or treating.

ON GABBY’S SPECIAL DAY


“I love you, Ma, I love you, Daddy!”
These phrases never fail to melt our worries and stress away. And now that Gabby is turning 7 years old this Wednesday, 5th October, Tina and I cannot be grateful enough to the Lord for giving us His greatest blessing; we love our son beyond words.

Because his birthday falls on a weekday (we have work, he has school), we decided to celebrate it in advance last weekend. Tina was suggesting for us to dine at T.G.I.Fridays again but of course, the birthday boy’s wish prevailed.

He has been craving for some bites at an all-cheese-pizza from Pizza Hut so we gave in to his request…

He’s a purist when it comes to pizza as his preference is exclusively partial to 3 to 4-cheese pizza; like he really doesn’t like anything on top.
Gabby also favored calamari and garlic bread from the menu…

I maybe a doctor and an educator but I honestly don’t know everything. I’m not sure if the love for great-tasting food (read : huge appetite) can also be transferred via genetics, can it? Gabby might have been blessed with good genes, don’t you think? LOL! :D
My choice : Pizza Hut’s Honey Barbecue Chicken Wings –sarap to the bones! :)

We washed everything down with iced cold water, canned light Pepsi for Gabby (yes, I know sodas are junkie too!), and a tall glass of citrus flavored drink infused with calamansi and champoy at its bottom–uniquely refreshing; an eye candy too!

After that hearty lunch (we didn’t finish everything; we had some slices as takeaway *defensive*), Tina went to the department store and bought Gabby a new shirt while I headed to the mall’s barbershop for that much needed haircut. We met about an hour after, and had some grocery shopping too.
Then the time to blow candles on a birthday cake came; we sat inside Secret Recipe and the rest was momentous…

While waiting for Gabby’s cake, Tina took this photo on a whim. A littly grainy but I just had to post it because Gabby’s too adorable, isn’t he?

Chocolate Indulgence cake landed on our table with a cake slicer and 7 pieces of candles. Our little big-boy didn’t waste time and made his wishes…

The multilayered and richly textured chocolate cake was truly to die for; there’s no other name more apt for it but Chocolate Indulgence. It’s one of our favorites!

At seven, Gabby’s still a baby. He still likes toys a lot! Good thing he knows how to profess what he wanted to receive so we know what to give. Best, it’s afforbale and functional too. Uhm, I think so… hehe..

He could have asked for a remote control aircraft but opted for his second wish. With these, you now have a clue where we’re heading next weekend, if and when weather permits…

We left Queensbay Mall last Saturday with happy faces and full tummies.

The simple celebration continued the next day on our humble abode here in Penang. Tina cooked another irresistible dish – creamy carbonara with lotsa bacon bits on penne, yummy!

We’re joined by my dad whom we picked up from Penang Airport after we spent our entire Saturday at Queensbay Mall. With his Lolo Ben around (who went home 2 months ago to Manila with my mom for some important matters), Gabby will have longer sleeping hours again before he goes to school daily. The birthday boy’s smile reached ear to ear when his Lolo Ben brought out from his luggage a gift imported from Pinas from his Lola Tessie (my mom).

And there was a candle on a birthday cake again; he really enjoyed blowing candles on his cake. There must be something special about it.

What made his birthday preparation this year a bit different from before, he took the initiative and the efforts to pack his simple loot bags for his classmates and teachers on Wednesday (his actual birthday)…

Alone, he segregated candies and packs of chocolate bicuits piece by piece and put them on these loot bags. Such heightened his excitement to share his special day with his Chinese and Indian schoolmates too…

But we made known to him that he’ll only have loot bags as giveaways and no party will be thrown in his school here (read : we’re cutting on expenses, seriously!). Nontheless, it’s fine with him, after all, he understands and loves us so.

Our family life, although far from being perfect has been incredibly special and seems like there’s always an everyday-celebration because we have you, anak! We love you very much, Gabby! :)

OF FRIENDS AND PIZZA

Being away from our families and friends by working abroad isn’t easy; it’s tougher than you can imagine.  Inspite of our constant communication with them via Skype, phone calls, SMS and emails, we still long for their presence.

Honestly, there are times when I shed tears particularly when I’m alone in my room, or even just after Skype with my wife+our kid simply because I miss them so.  But then again, everything gets OK when I remind myself of the purpose of being here in Penang. I also keep in mind that I am still lucky to be with Filipino colleagues who became my friends. Believe it or not, they have been keeping my sanity intact, LOL! :D   Seriously, they keep me company; they’ve become my  family here in Penang. :)

LAST WEEK’S FOOD PORN

I certainly know that being a non-smoker and a very occasional alcoholic drinker doesn’t give me enough license to pig-out every now and then. And as a medical practitioner and a lecturer at that, I completely understand those long term consequences -health wise.  But what can I do?  Resistance is as they say, futile when the opportunity presents itself. :D

Most of my housemates here in Penang follow a diet/gym regimen (we live in a penthouse where ground floor has swimming pool, gym and sauna); one of them doesn’t eat rice but only oatmeal on most of his meals. Admittedly, unlike them, I am stubborn to start a healthier lifestyle. Yes, you can accuse me of not practicing what I preach but at least I am happy.  There’s nothing to be alarmed of as of this moment anyway. *bad defense*

Don’t get me wrong, I also eat veggies particularly those dishes that my friends cook at home. I walk with them a few meters daily to and fro bus stops; we stroll several hours in malls on weekends so I am not actually that couch potato. But whenever we find time to go out after work or more frequently during weekends and holidays, we cannot avoid eating what we’d like to eat.

Here are few of those yummies my friends and I savored last week…

The first and last time I got to sample Nando’s 24-hour-marinated peri chicken was back in 2005 when we had a 7-week-vacation in Auckland, New Zealand.  Its taste is truly remarkable to the palate….

Eggs Ben with fresh salad from the CBTL, Queensbay Mall… an all-day-breakfast treat served with Cafe Americano…

and Cantonense Kway Teow mixed with beehon from our favorite Pinoy-Malaysian owned food kiosk at the foodcourt of Queensbay Mall…It was my cheapest meal last week at RM 5.90 (PhP 82.60) but the most delightful!

Can you blame me for being a foodie ? :D

MY SECOND MONTH ABROAD

30 September 2010, Thursday –It has been exactly 2 months since I arrived in Penang.  There has been a whirlwind of experiences; adjustments in work, diversity of cultures, colors and religions and life in general on my new ground  are still a work in progress.

Remittances to my family have been sent twice and there are a lot of other things to be grateful for.  However, despite the downpour of blessings, there are factors beyond control that even if you stretch your patience to the fullest still go down to your nerves and irked you out.  Cest la vie! –It doesn’t take one to be cerebral to understand that in this thing called life, there always black against white.

Anyway, I didn’t spoil my last day of September for nothing. After work, my fun-loving-housemates and I went straight to the Jetty in Butterworth and headed to the ferry with few things in mind –to enjoy the night at Penang Island; buy essential stuffs we’ve been wanting to have and just forget about whatever anxieties bugging us.

We roamed around a bit and reached Queensbay Mall where I bought myself a 500gb Samsung external drive and joined 2 of my friends for our late dinner.

Other than my family and a few friends, I miss a lot of foods seriously. Believe it or not, it took me 2 months to grab a bite of pizza again!  So every bite was like a piece of heaven!

Unfortunately according to him, it looked better on photo that it tasted.  It has an ingredient that he (or most of us including me) hates the most –curry.  At least we ordered pizza that I guess, saved his night.

It was cheesy with few shrimps and fish bits; just enough to compliment my pizza craving but nothing much to rave about other than it was new to my taste as I was used to tomato-based lasagna back home. Nonetheless, I was happy with my dinner. It was a soothing break from our daily meals.

As October comes upon us, we’re hitting the roads and waters again this afternoon to do much-needed grocery shopping and to buy other essentials.  I am taking a mental note to hold on to my few ringgits and not splurge too much on sale and discounted items here. For most shopping addicts, it’ll take super powers to resist 70% off ;  so help me God! :)

THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, LA UNION (part 2): FOOD PORN!

26 July 2010, Monday–THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, a Santorini-inspired piece of paradise in La Union, Philippines offers infinite possibilities.  Beyond its Mediterranean architecture and interiors that provides leisure and recreation, it’s a foodie’s heaven.

I had the privilege of experiencing the world-class resort and savoring the food with 9 other passionate Filipino bloggers as we gave in to the resorts’ irresistible invitation to a 3-day-FREE accomodation and tour.

After 6 hour-trip from our meeting place in Makati City to the resort itself at Poro Point,  we were brought first to VEGAS CAFE; a restaurant and bar adjacent to the FIESTA CASINO of  THUNDERBIRD RESORTS. It was indeed a fitting feast 3 days before I submit myself to a whole new universe as I begin to work as a medical college lecturer abroad.

I smiled from ear to ear when I learned that we’ll be having an order-and-eat-what-you-want meals during our stay.  How can you resist  such prelude to indulgence? :)   Best of all, everything’s FREE (thank you, TBR!).

CHEF’S SALAD, PhP 250+ Iceberg lettuce topped with strips of Swiss cheese, chicken, beef, & your own choice of dressing. Surprisingly, the serving was humongous! Larger than anyone’s appetite. :)

SEAFOOD CHOWDER SOUP, PhP 150+, One of the BEST tasting chowder I’ve ever tasted.

SUSHI-SASHIMI COMBO, PhP 750+ This was my personal choice for lunch. Beautiful, isn’t it?  :) Yummy too!

BULGOGI, PhP 385+ a Korean dish made of thinly sliced beef marinated in slightly sweetened soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic.

Let’s move on to OUR DINNER on the same day.

At around 8PM, all of  the 10 invited bloggers were shuttled to the Vegas Cafe again after a relaxing afternoon at our cozy and spacious deluxe rooms. Dinner was ala carte again and we’re not complaining. :)

Everyone agreed to mostly Pinoy and few Asian dishes for our sumptuous supper.

After dinner, half of the group decided to burn the calories by strolling the distance of about several meters from  Vegas Cafe to the hotel. Perhaps, most of them absorbed the thoughts I shared about digestion and food intake.

A glorious morning came the next day and I thought I woke up in Greece. :)

We were advised to take a heavy buffet-breakfast at OLIVES, the restaurant located near the lobby, enough for us to last for the scheduled City tour that day.

Few minutes after I had those 2 plates, a glass of fresh four seasons juice and a cup of coffee, we headed to our La Union City Tour (last part of this blog series).

We had a long but fun day that we savored every minute in places we’ve been to.  We were brought to a locally famous and quaint hole-in-wall restaurant in San Fernando City. It’s called HALO-HALO DE ILOKO which boasts of, what else but Halo-Halo and other Ilocano dishes.

This late merienda was another new stimuli for my palate.

clockwise : OKOY TIKYOSKO, PhP 85+ : shrimps, sprouted monggo, squash, malunggay leaves. It was a vegetarian feast. HALO-HALO de Iloko, around P135+ : has all the ingredients plus a bit of strawberry that wasn’t found in my glass. :( EMPAREDADOS or Native Hamburger/Sandwich PhP 80+. It’s a pair of fried buns with Vigan longganisa, mayonnaise filling.

That was indeed a satisfying heavy merienda.

After which, we were brought back to the hotel and since my fellow blogger and I have to leave that night for Manila while the rest of the group still had their 3rd day at the Casino the next day, we were offered to try pizza at OLIVES before being heading home.

We tried PIZZA ILOKANO, PhP 400+ (left): Tomato concasse, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, Vigan longganisa, tocino, tuna and onion.and PIZZA QUATTRO STAGIONI, PhP 470+ (right) : Kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, parma ham, fresh mushrooms, and mozzarella.

Good food.

Enticing place.

Great company.

GABBY’S V-DAY 2010

Dear Gabby,

Although I immensely enjoyed my Sunday morning and afternoon with my co-bloggers in Binondo (which I will narrate to you here soon),  still nothing beats  spending Valentine’s with you and your mom, naks! :D  

Your mom and I are so glad with your choice of movie; how many of your age would have interest in Zeus, Poseidon, Athena and the rest of Mount Olympus? :) I myself have almost forgotten my Greek Mythology and haven’t found it more fascinating than this.

It was fantastic! My  Our kind of movie–no heavy stuffs,  just plain fun.  You know how your mom and I are both kid-at-hearts. :D   The story line about Gods, Goddesses and Demigods didn’t bore me from beginning to end. It actually drew me to the scenes that I almost forgot my biggest problem to date; it’s so effectively entertaining! (at least for us, LOL).  How can you go wrong with the director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone?  To cut it short, it was amazing watching the film with you and Tina as usual. Sarap ulitin sa Gateway Mall dibidi (joke!). :D

I know your mom will less appreciate it (than dining) but I still insisted  managed to buy her official Valentine veggies from Rustan’s.

If Percy Jackson was magical, our dinner was a champion! :D

We skipped starters and immediately ordered one of our family’s favorite pizzas…

With Cibo’s absolutely delicious food, nice and edgy ambiance, almost flawless service  and watching that adventure-fantasy movie, we really had another fun start of the week.

WHAT’S FOR MERIENDA?

My wife, Tina, our son, Gabby and I are just like most Pinoys who love eating and eating in between meals. :D   Whenever at home, particularly during weekends, we usually have morning light meal few hours after breakfast or more likely before lunch. Same thing goes in the afternoon; a snack is always perfect as a prelude to dinner. :D   But unlike others, we oftenly skip midnight snacks for the fear of taxing our pancreas too much that might lead to its rupture during sleep; now that’s another topic.

Merienda or midday meal is one of Spain’s legacies to Pinoys that I am thankful for, aren’t you also? :D

Here are some of the yummies we enjoy during merienda. 

Are you a popcorn-person?  Have you tried Chef Tony’s?  What flavor/s do you like?

I don’t know about you, but Gabby and I just love it when Tina fries fish balls and serves it hot off the pan with vinegar+soy sauce+onions!  :D   We prefer only fish balls cooked at home rather than those sold in streets.  And you?

Other than chips ahoy, oreo, or the locally made m.y.san buttercookies, lady fingers or broas (I love broas!), prima and marie (which reminds me of my childhood), I and my family also enjoy munching these cookies…

  

Try it, make sure it’s Double Fudge Sugar-Free! They’re heavenly delicious in each bite! :D

Sometimes, we have fruits during snack time and nothing compares to sweet and plump bunch of lanzones which happens to be in season until now.  Do you like lanzones too?

I usually grab two large orders of  Khaleb Shawarma for Tina and me as our merienda before we go grocery shopping.

  

We also like dimsum! Among our favorites are shrimp cheong fan and shrimp dumpling a.k.a. hakao!

 

And who would say no to pizza for merienda ?

or to either venti of frappucino, iced macchiato or any hot blends from Starbucks Coffee and pastries or a slice of cake perhaps…

Our latest to-go purchase was done just yesterday afternoon, soon after Tina and Gabby tagged along with me as I went to my dentist in Marikina, we spotted a carinderia that sells freshly cooked rice cakes…

Nevermind if it’s cheaply priced at PhP 25 per bibingka and at PhP 20 per order of puto-bumbong;  regardless whether these two are far from Ferino’s or Via Mare’s or even from Kamayan’s, what was important yesterday was the fact that we enjoyed our first bites at these Holiday season favorites. :D  If only we have muscovado, everything could have been almost perfect with Anchor butter and those coconut shavings.  

Tastes, smells and feels like Christmas already! :D   Aren’t you excited ?

Well, we are!  Both for Christmas and enjoying another satisfying snack! :D

ANYTHING GOES AT…

One lazy afternoon more than a week ago, I brought my wife, Tina and our 5-year-old son Gabby to Gateway Mall to have an early dinner in a restaurant that isn’t new to our palates. 

While  waiting for our order, Gabby became too busy with the crayons provided by the waitress clad in neck tie and apron while Tina and I were preoccupied doing nothing. :D

I and my wife usually oblige whenever a wait staff of a restaurant asks us to fill out a comment card to evaluate the food, ambiance, their service and whatnot to help them with the improvement.  But since there was no one in that restaurant had asked me to do so, I just kept the comment card and brought it home. 

Here are my comments on that particular eat-out :

After 15 minutes of waiting, what we favored from the menu were served with a smile :D

seafood caesar saladSEAFOOD CAESAR SUPREME, regular PhP 395+ (large PhP 445+).  Traditional Caesar salad topped with fried calamari and grilled shrimps, crabmeat and parmesan cheese.  I so love its ingredients but I wished they could have added more dressing into it. I didn’t ask for more but should I?

supreme samplerSUPREME SAMPLER, regular PhP 395 (large PhP 595 +).  A combination of Buffalo wings, Sta Fe spring rolls, mozzarella sticks and onion rings.   My wife likes the spicy hot Buffalo wings which are served with celery sticks and bleu cheese dressing. This platter also has deep fried onion rings coated with seasoned mix, served with ranch dressing which I personally like.  Another inclusive in the plate are mozzarella sticks which are Gabby’s favorite.

Since this wasn’t our first time to dine there and already have tried other yummies from their other branches, I was no longer surprised that the wait staff knows every ingredient there is in Sta Fe spring roll when I asked her about it. That is really impressive in a server. :D I usually ask them of their bestsellers and I just hate it when someone doesn’t know anything about the food they offer and gives you nothing but blank stares. :o But this restaurant’s people are really exceptional; well-trained.

However, the three of us didn’t  like that Sta Fe spring rolls at all, sorry. They are stir-fried long stem bean sprouts, cilantro, chicken strips, Monterey Jack cheese, wrapped and dip fried till golden.  Perhaps it’s only us that we found every single ingredient incompatible in that roll; or we’re only partial to the Pinoy version of wrapped and fried bean sprouts deliciously dipped in vinegar! :D

We made sure Gabby enjoys that dinner by having his other favorite; what else but pizza!

pizza samplerPIZZA SAMPLER, regular PhP 375+ (large PhP 475+).  My son has been biased with QUATTRO FORMAGGI or four cheese pizza but there was none on their menu, so we had the sampler instead, which is a combination of 2 to 4 pizza flavors of your choice.  For Gabby, we ordered MARGHERITA in half serving, with mozzarella and parmesan in fresh tomato sauce, less the basil leaves and the other half we tried FRUTTE DE MARE topped with shrimps, calamari,  mussels, bell pepper rings and onions. We like any pizza that’s stone-baked, so we give this Pizza Sampler our two-thumbs-up! :D

You might think we finished all these plates, WRONG! We have huge appetite but we’re too full for all of these yummies. We had the left-overs to-go and reheated as our breakfast the next morning but nothing was left in the plate of our dessert..

PASTA ALL YOU WANT

How many plates can you finish when a great deal called PASTA ALL YOU CAN, ALL DAY, EVERYDAY is offered only at PhP 150?

We’ve been wanting to try this great deal for the loooongest time but it’s only yesterday when the stars and the heavenly planets conspired that we found time.

My wife, Tina, our 5-year-old son, Gabby and I trooped to JOEY PEPPERONI PIZZERIA at their branch in Fort Bonifacio, just in the corner of Mckinely Avenue, Taguig City and had our late lunch. It was our first to sample their pizza and pasta and gladly, we’re not disappointed. :D

IMG_4842CLASSIC CAESAR SALAD, PhP 110 +.  Crisp romaine lettuce, bacon bits, crunchy croutons served with Caesar dressing. 

Ever since Gabby had his first taste of this pizza a few months back from another Italian restaurant, it has become one of his staples whenever dining out. We’re proud that our son has developed his own preference to food and at an early age, he knows his palate very well.  Tina and I can’t complain about his choice of flavor; this one’s simple yet deliciously fulfilling.

IMG_4850QUATTRO FORMAGGI (Four Cheeses) 8″ pizza,  PhP 165 +, also available at  12″ at PhP 335+.  This thin crust pizza has no toppings but parmesan, fontina, mozzarella and ricota.  Sarap!

The pasta dishes included in the promo are…IMG_4851PESTO (original price PhP 145 +).   Made of basil, cashew nuts and parmesan cheese in olive oil.  Pesto tops my list of favorites of all pasta dishes.  Joey Pepperoni’s may not be the best pesto I’ve tasted but it’s not bad either. I like it.

IMG_4856CARBONARA (original price PhP 155 +).   Pepper cream sauce and bacon bits in spaghetti.  Joey Pepperoni Pizzeria’s version of this usual pasta got my wife’s vote, considering her discriminating taste.  It’s best eaten immediately after served so as to avoid the pasta being dried as it can absorbs the creamy sauce in a few minutes.

IMG_4865BOLOGNESE (orginal price at PhP 175+). Classic meat sauce.  It isn’t as good as the other two but then again, perhaps it’s just me.

FYI, Joey Pepperoni’s PASTA ALL YOU CAN promo has those three dishes in big servings that even foodies like me and my wife who both have huge appetite and great passion for eating may surrender easily.  Honestly, since those pasta are prepared no less than usual, they’re all deliciously satisfying that I only had 3 plates (yes, I sampled all of them, hehehe) and Tina only had a plate and a half (I ate the rest of her second serving ) of Carbonara.  I tell you, with PhP 150 deal of yummies for more than a plate, you can never complain. 

For the three of us, the winner among those we’ve tasted at JP’s pizzeria is…IMG_4870FROZEN CAPPUCCINO MUD PIE, PhP 90 +.  This definitely is one of the reasons to visit JP again.  It’s so delectable that we find it hard to resist. Satisfied the sweet tooth in all of us, hands down. It’s enormous serving and cheap price gives everyone a chance to enjoy life’s simple pleasures :D   It’s such a perfect sweet ending to a binge self-indulgence of carbo-rich plates.

We had their iced tea, bottomless for only PhP 50.

Friendly and polite service, affordable good food, high ceiling + casual dining ambiance = we like! 

The only thing I dislike with Fort branch is the presence of a communal toilet. It would be nice if they can have separates for both genders and a bonus for physically challenged and/or a family room with diaper deck for babies. :D   Nonetheless, we’ll surely visit again, not only that branch but else where.

PS : After that hearty meal at JP’s, we concluded that we’re nothing compared to the YOUNG (as in she looks like early or 20 something) LADY from Las Piñas City whose picture appears at the promo card at JP’s tables because she at  present, holds the record for having enjoyed NINE PASTA plates!  Can you handle that?

BORACAY SERIES : A FOODIES’ PARADISE

This is my 4th post in a series.

I felt I gained 10 pounds  kilos after our brief family break in BORACAY  last week. :D   You can’t blame me, the island itself is an epicurean paradise; there are tons of gastronomic temptations…

Toppings include corn cereals and red mung beans and a ton of tropical fruits -slices of bananas, pineapples, mangoes, watermelons and cherries with a huge swirl of vanilla soft ice cream.

The moment we walked through D’mall in Boat Station 2 and saw Red Bean Halowich’s window display, we never had second thoughts of entering their airconditioned restaurant to try their iced sweet treats. We only ordered that big bowl and a glass of iced tea for Gabby.  Couple Ice, second to their biggest serving, is huge enough to be shared by 2 to 3 people.   The bowl reminds me of Red Mango’s, except that Halowich’s is more enormous in size and contains ice, not frozen yogurt.  Nevertheless, we love it.  Ask my family. :D

While Halowich offers the best alternative to the famous Pinoy Halo-Halo,  ARIA  for us (my wife Tina, our son Gabby and I) is another must-try restaurant in the island.  A vibrant and relaxing vacation in Boracay is never complete without tasting the best pizza and best pasta from ARIA CUCINA ITALIA.

The fast and friendly wait staff who attended to our table told me that Aria is owned by an American restaurateur with some foreign partners; they also co-own Cafe del Sol, a coffee shop beside Aria and a Japanese restaurant located in the middle of D’Mall.

Gabby was asking for pizza on our second day at the beach.  As we try not to eat anything that can also be found in malls and Italian restaurants and fastfoods  in Manila, we sat in Aria and gave in to our son’s request.  We ordered…IMG_4570QUATTRO FORMAGGI, PhP 475 +.  It’s hard to overlook Aria’s finest woodfire oven-baked pizzas.   Aria’s version of four-cheeses pizza is light yet satisfying and flavorful.  The amazingly delicious crust is topped with four different cheeses : pecorino, feta, parmesan and mozzarella.  :D   Gabby had his smile up to his ears when the pizza arrived at our table.

IMG_4565BOSCAIOLA, PhP 370+.  A creamy sauce of mushroom, ham and parmesan cheese on pasta of your choice.  We had the white sauce on penne. Wow, sarap!  

There are many choices in Aria’s menu that are worth a try.  There are insalata or salads, meat dishes, antipasti and other flavors of pizza and variants of pasta.  Did I tell you already that Aria has wine selection too ?

What to have for dinner in Boracay ?

A few meters from the shore, as dusk comes to the island, beach front restaurants transform the coast line into a seafood and meat buffet, al fresco dining.

What’s a  BORACAY VACATION without sampling the freshest catch from the sea?  The spreads, which include fruits and some desserts, mostly cost PhP 250 per pax nett, excluded of drinks.  While the price of the buffet is so affordable, would you believe that a 1.5 liters of Coke regular costs PhP 140 (regular Manila price around PhP 37 to 40 only).  But heck, we have to try the seafood buffet here even for a night.

The gluttons in us had two rounds of the spread and a plate of watermelons and few servings of maja blanca and other kakanin and that’s it.  Yes, the crustaceans are fresh; there were garlic and boiled rice even some pasta and fish dishes include Lapu-lapu and Tuna; there were grilled pork liempo and fried chicken too; there were adobong pusit (squid), crabs, baked oysters and mussels and shrimps which I like the most but sorry there were the usual “lutong-bahay” taste.  In simplest terms, there’s nothing special about the buffet we had. 

My wife and I have this ordinary rule of thumb when dining out : we try to eat something reasonably priced, that can’t be prepared easily; something gourmet, or unusually present at our table at home.   And even though we’re satiated after that seashore pig-out, I still felt a bit disappointed. Perhaps, I was expecting more from the spread.  At any rate, try it as well, you might like it.  As what I usually post here, ‘to each his own’.

What’s best with our eat-all-you-want- dining in Boracay or elsewhere (including hotels in the Metro), our 5-year-old son still eats for FREE :D   Although he only ate soup and few servings of fruits, we’re still happy that we didn’t pay a cent for his plate.

Another must-try in Boracay is LEMON i CAFE  located at the heart of D’Mall in Boat Station 2. This resto boasts of all-day-breakfast ala carte menu, delicious entrees and of course, desserts.

On the afternoon of our first day in Boracay, Gabby was looking for McDonald’s or Jollibee for his favorite staples.  To no avail, I and his mom asked him of other food he wanted to chow down.  Thankfully, he pointed to a cake on a glass window display from Lemon i Cafe.

IMG_4327TIRAMISU, PhP 120+.    This is one of the best Tiramisu I’ve tasted, hands down. :D   Gabby’s picky palate likes it too.

For most travelers like us whose budget isn’t sky’s the limit,  finding affordable food places that offer combo-meal that also doesn’t disappoint is so comforting. 

D’Mall also has ANDOK’S that offers budget-friendly meals like… IMG_4660PORK SINIGANG, PhP 69.   Andok’s big bowl of sour soup of pork and veggies is surprisingly delicious!  The string beans, kangkong and tomatoes are  fresh. FYI, we haven’t had anything from Andok’s in Manila other than its grilled chicken + gravy + atchara or pickled papaya. Now, we know that there’s more of it than lechong manok.

IMG_4339SIZZLING SISIG, PhP 145.  Lipid-rich Sizzling Pork Sisig is one of Pinoy food favorites.  Since we don’t eat it on a daily basis, I guess having it on a plate during a (self-declared) holiday is logical enough (*defensive*).   Tina and I like this, malinamnam!  (tasteful, compared to other restos’).

We also sampled Andok’s PORK BARBECUE, PhP 22 per stick and Gabby was delighted with Andok’s LECHE FLAN, PhP 34.

And I almost forgot, our brief stay in the Boracay was made special each morning with FREE breakfast inclusive of the package we availed from ESCONDIDO BEACH RESORT.  A plate of toasts, fried egg, butter and strawberry marmalade plus a cup of coffee is quite simple but good enough to start our days in the island.  1

When you have a chance (again) to be in one of the world’s best beaches, take your vacation to the fullest by defining your digestive pleasure. If  without dietary or health restrictions,  go ahead, by all means, INDULGE! :D

A QUAINT RESTO : REVISITED

Our munch plan for my birthday : 

               Friday late afternoon snack/early dinner + Sunday hotel buffet = family bonding :D  

This is the first of two celebrations I had with my wife, Tina and our son, Gabby…

It took us seven months before we revisited this quaint Italian restaurant tucked in the low-key area of Cubao (our first can be viewed  here ). I like  its interiors and ambiance more than their food.  OK, their menu may be authentic, as the owners are a former paparazzo who married a Filipina; but I guess my palate has been biased with other restaurants that serve similar cuisine.  Nevertheless, I always  find BELLINI’s  pleasing…

It’s like a small piece of Italy in the heart of Marikina Shoe Expo in Cubao, Quezon City… 

Bellini’s delightful atmosphere is artistically beautiful but I just wish the service will be friendlier. The two wait staffs who attended to us were discreet and courteous; but smiles were inapparent. I like food servers who always flash their best smiles while at work. For me, smiles mean that they love and enjoy what they do.  It lessens my appetite if the servers are apathetic.  

I always expect waiters and waitresses to be acquainted with the menu. I usually ask something like the serving size and the restaurant’s bestsellers; and I admire staffs who are familiar with the food they serve.  Yesterday was not my lucky day at Bellini’s; for the querries I addressed to our waitress were all thrown to her colleague.

I ordered one of my favorite breads, focaccia; even asked the waitress the dip that comes with it, but got no reply from her but from other waiter.  And when I checked the bill before paying, the focaccia bread was charged but it wasn’t served.  To be fair, I’d say the waiter was apologetic and did the necessary changes on our bill; but there’s no room for mistakes to render remarkable dining experience.

Poor me, I just thought that the waitress was new and still untrained, and I just swallowed my temper and remembered that it’s my birthday.

Enough, and on with the food… :D

Last February, we ordered a pasta that won our hearts, so we had another plate for my birthday!

We love its thick strands of pasta and its simplicity made it so tasteful.

What’s an Italian dining without pizza?

All of Bellini’s pizzas are mozzarrella and tomato based. We had Bellini’s special pizza seven months ago.  It was fine combination of most toppings in super thin crust.

Yesterday, we chose this 4-cheese-pizza because we considered our son’s preference. He doesn’t like any toppings on his pizza but cheese.  We all liked its flavorful thin crust;  but we all thought that Amici’s version is far better.

I ordered this grilled chicken breast with herbs and chili just to taste how different it is from other chicken recipes I’ve sampled from other restos. I like its well-marinated meat that was so tender that once you dunk your fork into it, it easily shreds off from its bones. I like it but not to point it’ll become my favorite.  Unfortunately, my wife gave this dish her thumbs down.  She was probably not in the mood for some spice.

Gabby immediately recognized that it’s a combined mocha and coffee ice cream cake. For a barely five-year-older, we’re proud to raise Gabby as a food enthusiast too (with the hope that he’ll pursue his early dreams of becoming a chef one day).  But to my wife Tina, this gelato cake is a dissapointment; not of its taste, but of its price.  I have to agree with her that it’s pricey for its serving. C’mmon, with its price more expensive than a pint of ice cream, the cost is just too steep! Look how fancy the layers are but its tiny size of slightly bigger than a teaspoon drowned all its glory…

Although we’re full after that meal, I felt something’s missing.  I never experienced the excitement of dining I had during our first visit.  Perhaps because of the gloomy weather, or can I attribute it to the service and some dishes that can still be improved? 

Anyway, there’s still tomorrow for another day of gastronomic adventure.

WEEKEND BLESSINGS

How would you spend PhP 4,000 worth of gift certificates found in your mail box?

I know for some this is cheap, but hey, it’s still PhP 4K !

I could have bought myself a nice pair of jeans, or an out-of-season-sale sneakers from Gola, Adidas or Nike; or a pair of silk neck ties from Marks & Spencer (i love collecting ties from M&S; i’ve a number of them already; it’s therapeutic for me to see my ties neatly arranged on my wardrobe) or a new sporty back pack or duffle bag perhaps.  *SIGH* :P

I have accumulated more than 25,000 points from using one of my credit cards and haven’t redeemed them yet until I called the bank agent last week and told her my desire to claim my rewards as GCs from Robinson’s.  I was only expecting PhP 2000 worth of GCs but the friendly call center agent handling the account suggested that I can claim the entire rewards amounting to PhP 4,000 which can be use for purchases in all branches of Robinson’s department stores, supermarkets, Toys R Us, hardware and appliance center, also includes some clothing boutique like the West-End-brand Topshop and  a Japanese sale store -Saizen. She advised me to expect the delivery of the GCs one to two weeks after our transaction. Not bad.

Barely a week after, I got the GCs. :D   I told my wife about the shopping spree that we’re about to enjoy and I personally suggested to her that it would be better for us to stuff our fridge and cupboards with food, laundry supplies using those freebies.  Of course, she can’t complain. :D

We arrived yesterday afternoon at Robinson’s Galleria with hungry stomachs. So before hitting the grocery counter, we first filled our tummies with these…

IMG_3625GREAT WHITE PIZZA, PhP 220+.  Freshly made pizza crust topped with bacon, shrimps and mushrooms with garlic over rich and creamy Alfredo sauce. This is a delicious breather from the usual tomato-based pizzas plus it has one of my favorite ingredients : shrimps!

Our merienda was not covered by the GCs since it’s from the Italian-American fast-service restaurant, CHEF D’ ANGELO (How I wish I could franchise; and the name of the resto won’t be a problem, lol). It’s a budget-friendly food place that’s usually packed by diners, mostly yuppies and students who are always on the look for restauarants with homey ambiance.  With pots and pans hanging from the ceiling, and a kitchen-like display complete with colorful stone & ceramic plates and jars, there’s always that feel like having the meal in the comforts of your own dining  room.  However, since it’s still a fastfood-restaurant, some people who prefer cozy, quiet and relaxing dining place,  probably would not even try ordering from Chef d’ Angelo.  To each his own.

Since the usual servings in Chef d’ Angelo can be shared,  I asked my wife, Tina to choose our pasta.  While she was browsing the menu, I was hoping she would order my favorite, Seafood Medley (tender shrimps and calamari lightly sauteed, served with spicy scampi sauce over fettuccini) but she opted for ….

IMG_3619SPAGHETTI CARBONARA, PhP 148+ A pasta with bacon, ham, green peas in a mild parmesan flavored cream sauce. It tasted OK, just like any Carbonara; nothing unusual and I wish those strings of ham could have been diced or cut into smaller bits.  I’m not sure if it’s close to being authentic, but it just felt weird seeing those long strips of ham on pasta;  maybe, it’s just me or something.

It seemed like we had too much of bechamel sauce yesterday- from those pizza and pasta.  No worries, there was still taste distinction as creamy as they get. :D

Gabby wanted to satisfy his sweet tooth and personally picked this from the cakes on display at the counter…

IMG_3617CHOCOLATE MARBLE CHEESECAKE, PhP 120+.  Creamy baked vanilla cheesecake marbled with dark and whit chocolate ganache.

I’ve tasted other cakes from my last visit to Chef d’ Angelo in other mall but surprisingly, Gabby’s choice was better. It’s just not irritatingly sweet.  And the serving, again, was huge compared to other cheesecake places.

By the way, they also serve burgers, fries, onion strings, salads, soups. waffles, and single-serve their ice tea is great thirst quencher too! It has a pleasant flavor similar to four seasons ice tea.   And their fried chicken servings are deliciously enormous as well! :D

After that hearty meal, we initially used PhP 1000 worth of GCs at the department store and bought Gabby 3 T-shirts in bright colors that he personally handpicked from the items at the kids’ section. Tina and I also spotted a Ben 10 flip flops for him, which he likes the most from that cartoon on cable that he watches, and also got him a set of colorful plastic shore instruments – all for our Boracay trip next month. (God please let the sun shine its brightest on the 3rd week of October)  :D   Then the remaining PhP 3K  of our GCs were spent at the supermarket.

Isn’t nice to buy things for free?! :D

AFFORDABLE INDULGENCE

We needed to go back to our place before lunch time to freshen up after we enjoyed our son’s preschool activity a couple of days ago.  Then, we found ourselves in one of familiar restaurants that we learned to like love  because of its nonintimidating,  family-friendly, canteen-ambiance with delicious and reasonably-priced- but not-so-authentic Italian menu.  It’s none other than AMICI and CARA MIA !        IMG_3463PENNE   AL   SALMONE  AFFUMICATO, PhP 230+

This pasta plate is definitely a winner for us. My wife Tina, our son Gabby and I like its flavorful taste of smoked salmon that perfectly jived in unison with its creamy tomato based sauce.  Its serving is enough to be shared by two.

It was only our second time to order this Amici’s FOUR CHEESES pizza but it has grown in our palate. It’s our son’s favorite pizza!  Sans toppings and all, it stands out! I like its thin crust made really crunchy and quickly served because of brick-oven baking and the sumptuous taste of combined cheeses is just irresistable. 

A visit to Amici and Cara Mia would not be complete without those heaping scoops of gelato! As I’ve stated in my former post about this wonderful food place, the only difficult thing is to decide what to try- because everything is worth the drool, lol…

After few minutes of looking at those delectable treats, we’ve finally selected our choices that noon…

Gabby had Cookies and Cream Gelato cup and I tried Caramel Nougat cup, at PhP 50+ each. 

As if we’re not hyperglycemic yet, we dared ourselves and ordered more Cara Mia yummies…

Tina’s choice : SPUMONI SURPRISE, PhP 80 per slice.  She liked it. A blend of chocolate and pistacchio with vanilla creaminess of that gelato cake. 

As for me, I finished a bowl of this gelato cake in a few minutes, lol…IMG_3487BANANA BLAST, slice PhP 80.  Who says nothing can be enjoyed less than a hundred pesos?  Presenting to you, the gelato cake that caught my discriminating gustatory sense.  OK, I haven’t tasted them all, but for that moment, I think this one’s superb of its kind. If you like flavors and textures, this one’s perfect. With chilled strawberries and banana-based Italian ice cream mixed with another chocolatey flavored gelato -Banana blast is simply fantastic!  

When we were just ready to go, the waiter asked Tina if she would gladly submit her palate to a free taste-test. Immediately after a nod, the waiter offered this…

Her verdict based on APPEARANCE, SERVING SIZE, TASTE and TEXTURE/MOUTHFUL and my family’s smiles…

It has a canteen-ambiance because of combined wait-staff servings and self-service.  I am not complaining.  I look at it as Amici and Cara Mia’s positive appeal and edge from the others.  Since one has to go to a corner with freezers of ice cubes and pitchers of water for you to bring to your table,  after paying at the cashier counter upon order, I see no complexities but simplicity in dining.  A similar experience we have in the comforts of our own homes.

PIZZA + GELATO

My family and I have been enjoying frozen yogurt and gelato, other than the usual ice cream these days.  We’ve tried some of them and the latest we tasted were few flavors of gelato from Cara Mia Gelateria which is also owned by people of Amici.

I’ve been wanting to bring Tina and Gabby to Amici and Cara Mia since I read good reviews of this Italian casual food places located under one roof from the blogs I follow;  the most recent post was from a foodie-blog buddy, mrs. lavendula .  Finally, we got to enjoy yummies from both of these two establishments 2 days ago.

Good thing we live 10-minute-away from Tomas Morato area where restaurants and fastfoods have grown like mushrooms. 

Since my wife Tina was planning to prepare pasta for dinner last Friday, we just ordered pizza and gelato as our afternoon snack.

AI QUATTRO FORMAGGI, PhP 290.  This is Amici’s four cheeses pizza.  Our preschooler son, Gabby wanted no toppings in pizza so this one was easy to choose from the menu. Despite its simplicity, this pizza rocks! :D It’s so flavorful until the last bite of its crust.  It’s so hard to resist that we finished its entirety in a flash and got no leftovers.

If you’ve been frequenting my blog, you’ve known that I am partial to anything with shrimps and riped mangoes. I never missed to try a slice of a cake called MANGO TANGO from Cara Mia; it was so affordable at PhP 55/slice that I’d wish even carinderia or little foodstalls at sidewalks would sell this reasonably priced delectable dessert, lol :D

And of course, we’ve tasted Cara Mia’s gelato. The only hard part was choosing the flavor from the wide variety.

The first photo on this post was my strawberry flavored gelato.  It’s PhP 50 per order and additional PhP 10 if you want in waffle cone or waffle bowl.  I never eaten an italian ice cream in a sugar waffle bowl yet in my 33 years of existence, lol, so the kid-at-heart in me kicked in again, lol. :D

According to the flyer we got from Amici and Cara Mia,  Italian ice cream called gelato has more advantage than the ordinary ice cream.  As to fat content, gelato is made with more milk, and lesser fat, resulting to a richer and creamier taste not to mention its health advantage. With regards to air content, gelato compared to the usual ice cream contains 10% air resulting to denser volume and velvety texture.  We swear, gelato from Cara Mia took several minutes before it began to melt;  a proof  that it’s so dense compared to others.  As to temperature, gelato is kept in a warmer temperature of -14′C (ice cream at -23′C), making it perfectly soft but firm so it can melt in your mouth and its full flavor is enjoyed.  And with regards to quantity of production, ice cream is made in large batches and kept  frozen for long periods of time while gelato is produce daily in small batches ensuring its freshness.

Tina and Gabby chose to have their gelato in cups, she had sansrival flavored; it was also delicious!

GABBY’S CHOICE

A couple of days ago, we had to go to Landmark in TriNoma to buy stuffs to fill in the fridge at home.  But since it was half hour past 4 in the afternoon, we decided to munch on something as late merienda/early dinner before heading to the grocery shelves.  

I had a short list of restaurants in mind to satisfy my own craving for some delights but I became too submissive when our four-year-old son Gabby called the shots.  While walking towards the escalators, he told us that he wanted to eat a specific favorite at one of the common resto that we frequent.  Since we just weaned Gabby from bottle-feeding several weeks ago (I know it’s quite late but what can we do? we’re just parents) and is now still adjusting with the sipping cup that he uses whenever he drinks milk, Tina and I are always excited to give in to his personal food preference.

Look how he candidly expressed his excitement to order the food that he wanted…

While I was wearing a blue shirt that day, they’ve conspired to wore politically-significant-YELLOW.

I think it’s a small hint of maturity for our kid that at a young age, he begins to have personal preferences towards food and starts to distinguish fastfood yummies from restaurant’s entrees.  I also consider this as a result of our brain-washing  motivating him to become a chef one day; which Gabby already disclosed since his mom allowed him to watch Iron Chef America on cable TV and of course, as we bring him to few hotel buffets and various restaurants, he developed his good taste for good food.  We wouldn’t mind if he becomes a chef one day; we’re actually excited with just the mere thought of having a chef or a restaurateur in the family.  Isn’t it obvious that we really love eating  :D

Last Thursday, our son was craving for a pan pizza of a particular pizza place…

I like Pizza Hut’s pan pizza too.  Mahusay pumili ang anak namin!   But I was surprised with what Gabby favored. It’s 3-cheese pan pizza sans toppings!!!!  Not even a single chopped mushroom was seen covering those cheeses. 

It’s a cheese lover’s delight. A pan pizza of only cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan, family size costs PhP 429… Sarap, but my palate was looking for some toppings…

I was happy that Gabby volunteered to eat on his own plate of his own preference but I did not allow the chance to pass without trying again my own Pizza Hut favorites which I know are Tina’s favorites too…

CAESAR SALAD.   With crisp romaine lettuce, bacon crumble, parmesan cheese, and herbed croutons tossed in Pizza Hut’s own caesar dressing served in chilled plate,  how can you not start your meal right ?  The price too, was very reasonable at PhP 79 a plate.

GARLIC BREAD.  Toasted bread with garlic parsley butter, PhP 55.   Happiness is affordable at Pizza Hut! :D

Then we ordered one of our favorite pastas from their menu….

GARLIC SHRIMPS and MUSHROOMS. Spaghetti tossed with sauteed shrimps and mushrooms, in garlic-butter sauce; PhP 119.   It’s so delicious that I can eat it everyday. :D

Gabby also ordered his preferred drinks- Iced Mocha.  Once in a while, we allow him to sip a small dose of caffeine and his other favorites are the frappuccinos of Starbucks.  Calories, calories, calories….

ABOUT LAST WEEKEND

IMG_2955Last Saturday, after a quick stop at my folks’ place in Pasig, I brought my family -Tina and Gabby to Eastwood Mall in Libis, Quezon City.   Look how crisp the interiors of the Eastwood Mall is…2Other  than having those functional and stylish lounges, Eastwood Mall boasts of having mall butlers clad in black suits who’ll offer to carry your paper bags throughout the duration of your shopping.  Although we haven’t bought anything yet from our previous visits there LOL :D ,  and still to try the cinemas (we commonly go to the Eastwood City cinemas – haven’t watched a movie yet at Eastwood Mall cinemas),  we usually go there for few reasons :  to get a load of Starbucks, for my preschooler son to enjoy Timezone and what else but  to CHOW! 

Perhaps, next to Glorietta & Greenbelt in Makati, Shangri la mall in Mandaluyong,  and Gateway and TriNoma in QC, this Eastwood Mall is becoming one our favorites.  Why not?  it isn’t as crowded as Isetann Recto (patawa lang po). :D

Before deciding where and what to eat, we asked Gabby to pose as I click the cam.  He knew he had so many photos taken already from this site from our previous visits hence the awkward smile…

   

From its exteriors, a row of upscale restaurants always appear so inviting however last weekend, Mr. Kurosawa won our votes.

It’s one of the chain of restaurants that the local celebrity Marvin Agustin partly owns.  One similarity between John and Yoko in Greenbelt 5, SUMO SAM in Shangri la and Power Plant Malls, with Mr. Kurosawa besides being contemporary-Japanese in the menu,  is the interiors.  All of these food places have hip and edgy atmosphere having subdued lighting, the evident constant use of purplish hues, and lots of things in black  which I like.  The servers too, wear dark sexy short dresses in heeled shoes/boots;  and you won’t expect any kimonos and obi belts just like in traditional Japanese resto. 

I like the idea of glowing Japanese posters up in the ceiling…

My wife and I noticed food is basically the same.  Their menus probably only differ in covers, but has less variations.  I don’t know about your palate, but IMO, one thing is sure - the food in those three spots are delicious if you welcome a fusion of taste between the East and the West,  however a bit reasonably pricey.

We  keep coming back to  SUMO SAM  once in a while because I personally like this dish that we’ve also tried ordering at John and Yoko, now tasted the plate in Mr. Kurosawa —> SEAFOOD OMELET RICE, PhP 228.

Tina and I both agreed that Mr. Kurosawa’s version of Seafood Omelet Rice is BETTER than Sumo Sam and John and Yoko. The Japanese rice is stickier; the taste yummier.  Common among the 3 restos : generous servings for this dish.

The serving was too large for our appetite (honestly) that we have to asked the wait staff for us to have it as to-go.  OK, I admit we have huge appetite but far from being gluttons we failed to finish this favorite because we sampled another hit from Mr. Kurosawa…

The pizza that we enjoyed after the last bite is  called IWO JIMA, PhP 279 …

It’s thin crust pizza which I like, and what made it uniquely savory from most pizzas we’ve tasted was the presence of sweetest mango cubes as one of its toppings.  Imagine the saltiness from cheese had married the sweetness of mango bits. It’s Euro-Japanese on a plate!   That  one last slice I had came from this good-for-three servings…

IMG_2971If my taste buds served me right, the mango and cheese combo in IWO JIMA pizza was also mixed with cubes of chicken teriyaki and sesame seeds.  It’s so flavorful enough for you to forget worries of daily living, lol :D  IMG_2979Another must-try from the menus of either Sumo Sam, John and Yoko and Mr. Kurosawa, are  the 3 -colored-iced teas.. They’re in green (lime), red (calamansi), and my favorite – in blue (dalandan)…

They’re refillable until whatever volume you can handle at PhP 108.

Apparently, we liked our merienda last Saturday; look how my wife and our son smiled after being satiated…:D

WHEN SIZE MATTERS

This isn’t  an ordinary pizza,  it’s enormous !!! 

It’s our first time to try JUGNO’s  MONSTER PIZZA . With its humongous size of 20 inches and a choice of  2 to 4  flavors,  it does not disappoint. :)

Whenever we go home to my parents’ place where my 3 brothers also reside, we commonly see empty boxes of this pizza after several times that they had deliveries without us (envious)… :(    So I just copied the contact info on my mobile and it was only last weekend that we’ve tried it.  My wife Tina made the call for the delivery, and was told to expect that monstrous pizza at our door approximately an hour and a half from the time she ordered. Nonetheless, with our  gluttonous hungry stomachs, we agreed.  Surprisingly, the pizza was delivered after forty minutes.  The rider was courteous I gave him a hefty tip.

We had four flavors  and requested for 16 slices (you can also have it at 8 or 42 slices perfect for parties).

It even came with 3 different types of dips – salsa, sour creme and the other one was foreign to my palate. The pizza was already flavorful with or without those dips…

What’s my favorite among the 4 flavors we sampled ? I tried them all and I can’t single out what’s better than the other. :)  

The price of that 20 inch-monstrous pizza was only PhP 519.  Since our domestic goddess household help went for a day off, we were only 3 last Saturday – my wife Tina, our son Gabby who finished a slice and a half and me.  We put the leftovers at the fridge and had it as breakfast the next day. :)   

So if you’re within the Metro, you may want to try Jugno’s Monster Pizza too…

SBARRO

We went to Landmark and TriNoma malls in Quezon City last Friday afternoon for our almost-weekly grocery shopping.   We had to grab a bite of something before pushing carts to grocery shelves, we decided to dine at SBARRO.

We like eating at Sbarro,  it’s one of our favorites since they have wide variety of choices of great Italian dishes.  Few  notable problems with Sbarro are the long queue when you order and its usual lack of tables despite an adequate space for most of their branches if not all, are always cramped by customers;  at least it’s apparent that they really serve good food. 

My wife Tina, 4-year-old son Gabby and I shared two different slices of pizza and two plates of pasta.

One of Sbarro’s specialties are their stuffed pizza.  We had another bite at this Stuffed Supreme Pizza, PhP 147 a slice / PhP 1176 whole.

IMG_1840The other slice we had was New York Style Cheese Pizza, PhP 79 a slice/ PhP 474 whole.  It’s being plain with only generous cheese toppings made it a good match with any tomato-based pasta. I like it!

We also had two types of pasta – one that was cream-based and the one with lots of lycopene.

PIZZA HUT BISTRO

Perhaps it has been a couple of years or so when Pizza Hut innovated its chain of pizza parlors into Pizza Hut Bistro offering wide selection from their menu coupled with impressive ambiance.

Do yo like Pizza Hut ?  Well, we do.  I’ve compiled here our recent and past foodtripping at Pizza Hut Bistro, here’s some of our favorites…

CIBO, CIBO, CIBO!

One more post before dozing off…

After a hearty brunch at the Fort, Chef Laudico’s Bistro Filipino 2 days ago,  we  (my wife Tina, son Gabby & 2 friends of 16 years, Rob & LG) strolled through the stretch of Bonifacio High Street and Serendra and explored DIMENSIONE   (I like most of their stuffs, neat & edgy! from the simplest photo frame to the contemporary furnitures), we went in to 2 other shops that I can’t recall the names (perhaps, I’ve eaten too much pork), LOL,  then we headed straight to Shangri-La mall  to meet another looooooooong  LOST friend, Gezzely.    

Our malling is unusual without a dose of caffeine, so we had sips of Starbucks coffee after meeting Gez.  One topic lead to another, flights of ideas were nearly manifested, LOL, family and personal lives were discussed;  chatting with each other as if yesterday was 1993 and time was left unnoticed. 

When it was time for dinner, Rob, our sponsor for that night and I agreed on CIBO!  My heartbeat ran fast,  I palpitated for excitement,  I was QUIETLY  jumping for joy as we approached CIBO at the second level of the mall.  CIBO is ONE of OUR FAVORITES!  My wife Tina, our son Gabby and I are frequent patrons of CIBO at various branches -Gateway, Trinoma, Shangri-la mall, even tried dining once at ELJ Building/ABS-CBN branch. 

It was really unexpected!  The probable fastfood dining became another CIBO experience, amazing!  LOL.

We never wasted time and immediately ordered to the waiting staff the following….

CHEESY !

This is nuts !  It’s almost midnight and as I was browsing My Picture files, I got a glimpse of the photo from our latest bite at a pizza… And before dozing off I am craving, LOL.

Greenwich is one of our favorite fast food chains.  I like their pizza and lasagna for quick cheap eats.  My wife Tina and I finished this  huge square “choose-your-four-flavor” pizza about 2 weeks ago for less than 30 minutes.  Burp!  Not for gluttony or something, but probably because it has been a while since we last munch on this pizza from Greenwich.

Medical Dose :  Cheese, pepperoni & pineapples from pizza are all rich in TYRAMINE, which may cause tachycardia (increase heart rate), hypertension, headache and should never be eaten when taking drugs specifically MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) which are basically ANTIDEPRESSANTS.  

Other foods that are tyramine-rich are soy, alcoholic beverages, avocados, banana peels, grapes, figs, prunes, raisins, oranges, processed foods, tuna, yeast extracts.

BELLINI’S !

Last Friday, I and my wife, Tina decided to have dinner after work to finally try Bellini’s. This restaurant located in the subdued area of Marikina Shoe Expo in Cubao, Quezon City offers great authentic italian foods. One will disregard the location and the how-to-get-there once he/she gets to experience the reasons why Bellini’s is a word-of-mouth when it comes to sublime italian dining experience.

We’re both familiar with the resto since we already heard & read reviews about it, even watched a local movie shown in cable TV shot in Bellini’s itself.

Bellini’s ambience is really inviting and very homey. It has cozy interiors with murals and art works of what makes Italy and its key cities popular. And because the owner Mr. Roberto Bellini, married to a Filipina Ms. Maria Luisa, was a former Italian paparrazzo, most of his precious photos from his work are displayed on the walls which makes the place more interesting. I guess courtesy is the second skin of Bellini’s waiters for they have ready smiles to greet diners and very polite when taking orders and answering our querries.

We ordered a pasta called Bucatini all’Amatriciana, Bellini’s special pizza and 2 glasses of house iced tea. Tasting Bucatini all’Amatriciana was heavenly! I’m a fan of freshly cooked tomatoes and having it on thick strands of pasta was really something! The pizza was equally superb; its very thin crust and generous toppings made it really special. There was one funny moment when that Bellini’s special pizza was served to our table. The waiter also gave a medium-sized flask-like bottle of transparent semi-thick liquid with capsicum. Tina was clueless of what it was, so she asked the waiter if it was a bottle of vinegar and the server informed her that it’s a bottle of olive oil with capsicum - the Italian way of making pizza spicier. We were laughing at the moment and the waiter just commented that it happens all the time.  We’re both familiar with only tabasco or any bottled hot sauce or something in sachets.  Now we know more. LOL !
