MY WIFE’S CULINARY PROWESS PART 2

For five years of this blog’s existence, few loyal readers have witnessed how the love for food binds my family and I together. Tina, Gabby and I certainly love to eat! And our tastebuds have the same preferences either dining out or just eating within the comforts of our home.  Although I know how to perk up some tasteful dishes too, the credit goes to my loving wife who devotes so much of her TIME and EFFORTS not only at work but at the kitchen department to fill up our tummies with not just mediocre cooking but feasts that we usually crave for!

Here are some of her masterpieces, at least for Gabby and me!

This dish has shrimps, green bell pepper in light and sweet soy sauce, if not oyster sauce. It’s too delicious, I forgot to ask her what it’s called! :D

shrimps in oyster sauce

Vanhouten, sometimes Cadbury Chocolate Chamorado at Tuyo is one of our comfort foods! Even Gabby became biased with Champorado at Tuyo!  Yes, our 8-year-old kiddo loves tuyo, he eats it also sans champorado but with rice and dips its shredded bits on vinegar!  Regardless of the weather -rainy days or even when the sun is out; for breakfast or as late afternoon snack, this combo remains a personal favorite!

Ebi Tempura and Chicken Cordon Bleu. All.From.Scratch!

This one needs no introduction. Pass the vinegar, please! And let’s eat with bare hands, c’mmon! ;)

crabs

Bistek Tagalog with Blanched Veggies. I’m salivating now.

beef steak and blanched veggies

Some photographed pasta dishes the past months include this Crispy Noodle…

and the classic Creamy Carbonara with homemade Garlic Bread that she made for our birthdays (Gabby’s last October, and mine’s September). While Gabby dislikes bacon and only wants the pasta and the creamy cheesy buttery sauce, I love it up to its last bacon bits. LOL! :P

For dessert, Maja Blanca con Maiz

For someone like Tina who doesn’t have formal background in culinary arts, and for Gabby and me, those dishes are already superb despite its few imperfections. As mentioned, hours are usually spent in preparing them. Time and efforts for the family are always priceless!

With those few compiled food photos, one of my suntok-sa-buwan-wishes of putting up our very own food place someday lives on. Let’s see if it will materialize someday. Who knows what destiny brings? I am only sure of the fact that we love food and we like to eat – a lot!!!

CHRISTMAS BREAK 2011 FOOD TRIP

Our Christmas Break 2011 Series includes :

—————————–

Foreword : You might need a glass of cold water when you browse this post. You have been warned, haha! :D   *Most dishes are NON-HALAL too. Obviously, this is another gastronomic entry however, allow me to remind you again that I am not blogging food exclusively, but family and fun too. Go ahead, indulge and feast your eyes! :D

—————————–

The Christmas season in my country is all about family togetherness, friendly celebrations and homecoming particularly to those Filipinos who are residing and working abroad. Yuletide is such a perfect time for all those fun pursuits. It’s such a big blessing for us to be able to come home again after almost 2 year of being an expat-family here in Penang. Our hearts and stomachs remain loyal to the Philippines indubitably.

The following photos with brief descriptions essay some of the fantastic digestive feasts we savored with our families and friends during the entire 21 day-break (including holidays and weekends) we had in Manila.  Don’t ask me about their calories, we’re not counting, haha! :D

At Via Mare in Greenbelt 3, Tina, Gabby and I enjoyed Filipino dishes….

Crispy Binagoongang Baboy served with Pakbet side dish (Crispy Pork Belly with Shrimp Paste and veggies).

Via Mare's Beef Caldereta was Tina's choice; sarap! :D

Our late-lunch-heavy-merienda included…

Wild Mushroom Soup for Gabby

Puto Maya : glutinous rice served with panutsa syrup and riped mangoes.

Gabby's personal preference : Shooters-a trio of guinumis, mais con yelo and halo-halo. The kid has his own taste, do you agree?

Via Mare's famous Bibingka : buttery, fluffy and served with salted egg (or kesong puti) delicious!

It’s only every Yuletide season when leaves of poinsettias become vividly red; lovely, aren’t they?

And poinsettias are lovelier at the facade of Manila Peninsula. :D

…where Gabby was overwhelmed with holiday cheers

…where we dined with one of our good friends of almost 2 decades, LG who also stands as one of Gabby’s dutiful godparents.

At the LOBBY of the Manila Peninsula, dinner included another set of Filipino favorites…

Kare Kare (Ox Tail and Veggies in Peanut Sauce served with Shrimp Paste) : one of my favorites!

Pancit Guisado

Lechon Kawali

And an Oreo-flavored sundae dessert for Gabby

Moving on to our other indulgence, at the Podium in Ortigas, we were treated to a Chinese dinner by my dad-in-law at …

I am proud to belong to a beautiful family…oh yes, that’s something to be proud of!

Must have soup…

then a prawn dish selected  from the menu by my sister-in-law.

And despite no one’s celebrating a birthday (except for Baby Jesus!), must have Birthday Noodles…

Tender slices of beef and mushroom on a bed of broccoli’s always a winner for me. :D

Hakao or shrimp dumpling cannot be missed.

Our beloved kid ordered Four Seasons to wash down everything. Have I told you he has his own taste? :)

Gabby and his cousin, Raphael loved the dinner.

Then one lovely weekday afternoon, we found ourselves in the middle of Ayala Triangle in Makati City.

At last, after having a long thread at the inbox in facebook, we finally arranged a meet up with our good blogger-friends around the area of their offices in Makati City.  The lunch was set initially at Banapple, however the place was packed, so we had to look for Plan B : Wee Nam Kee.

It’s our (Tina, Gabby and I)  first time to dine at this Singaporean-inspired food place, where Hainanese Chicken Rice is the bestseller.

Hainanese Chicken cooked two ways : Steamed and Roasted; sarap pareho! And we ordered LARGE! haha :D

Dyan, one of the most bubbly blog buddy I have suggested we try Cereal Prawns when we visited Singapore last year. However, we didn’t have the chance back then, and luckily, it’s available to sample at Wee Nam Kee. Another yummy!

Here are our pretty lunch dates at Wee Nam Kee :

Tina & Gabby with blog buddies, Marian, Dyan and Grace

And we had another version of Birthday Noodle. Sarap din! :D

Two days before our flight back to Penang, I attended to the invitation of Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks a personal FREE Big Binondo Food Wok along with other BIG TIME food bloggers (read : For the nth time, this may be a food post but I am not into an exclusive food blogging).  After that almost 4 hours for pigging out at Manila Chinatown, I hurried to meet my family and my sister-in-law with our Med school classmates and great friends, also godparents to Gabby –doc Shiny and doc Mitch at Peking Garden, TriNoma Mall in Quezon City.

At around half hour past 6 in the evening when I arrived, they’ve already ordered and all I had to do is eat. But because I just came from another food trip, I was still satiated and had more appetite in catching up with them and our lost times.

On our table at Peking Garden :

Forgive me, I failed to get the names of the dishes from the menu; as I mentioned, I arrived when there were already food on the table. :D

Spareribs, obviously. It tasted better than it looks.

Fried chicken that’s nothing special to rave about.

They also selected Yang Chow Fried Rice and yes, Birthday Noodle again. However, if I can call the attention of Peking Garden with this post, or the concerned diners in the TriNoma branch, then I’d like to ask them the reason why their waitresses have to get the used plates from their diners’ table IMMEDIATELY, as in, IN A SNAP, iyong tipong hindi pa tapos kumain, kinukuha na ang plato. Why?  Never do that to your paying customers, okay?  I believe it’s disrespect. Why in a hurry? May lakad kayo? LOL! I swear, of all the food places I’ve featured here on my blog, my family and I will never set foot in Peking Garden TriNoma ever again, seriously.

—————————–

There was no lack of excitement in all the moments amidst gastronomic feasts we shared with our families and friends. Our vacation was made complete with such wonderful experiences. We look forward again to another holiday when we can extremely stretch the time to bond with our love ones. :D

LASANG PINOY

How did you start your 2011?

My family and I had totally different New Year’s eve. For the very first time in my 34 years of existence, I defied family tradition, superstition and beliefs about New Year celebration. We never had fireworks and firecrackers. We didn’t have 13 round fruits on the dining table that were supposed to symbolize 12 fruitful months and a surplus for the incoming year. We didn’t prepare any home-cooked meals neither bought dishes or cakes from restaurants or fast foods even as take-away.  Perhaps because Tina, Gabby and I just came home from Malaysia a day after Christmas and we became so busy allowing time to just pass by. Nonetheless, I extremely enjoyed my days off with my family. :D

Few hours before the clock strikes midnight last New Year’s eve, Tina, Gabby and I spent simple dinner at Sulu Hotel in Quezon City with my wife’s balikbayan dad who checked in there for his holiday here from Missouri.

During my vacation, we also got a chance to visit my dad and brothers in Pasig City and had dinner with them too.

The three of us watched  2 Pinoy movies (comedy and horror flicks), dined and strolled in malls I truly missed (Greenbelt, Glorietta, Gateway and TriNoma) and really savored my week-long break from work.

Before I report back to work in Penang early next week, I’d like to share with you the foods that I am extremely pleased to eat again after 5 months of being abroad.

Our very first meal after we got home  from the airport : Pandesal at goto…

Tina, Gabby and I arrived on 26th December from (Penang via)  Kuala Lumpur  at around 6AM after we were fetched by my 2 brothers from NAIA terminal 3.  We walked to Kawilihan bakery (the best bakery in Anonas/Chico Streets, QC) and bought a supot (brown bag) of  pandesal and goto for me! Sarap! miss na miss e!  Pandesal never tasted that delicious!

Reyes Barbecue, Glorietta Makati… Five months of no pork barbecue was worth the wait!

Christmas season in Pinas won’t be complete without bibingka (rice cakes). This one was from a stall near Greenbelt chapel. We also had Ferino’s, one of the best tasting bibingka in town.

I am more of bibingka fan rather than puto-bumbong (purple rice cakes steamed from bamboo poles; do you like them both?).

Pancit Malabon :  I’d count the days until I can enjoy you again…

Crispy Pata and Kare-kare from Dencio’s …classic Pinoy favorites.

And yesterday, my sister-in-law invited us for a dinner treat with Tina’s balikbayan-dad at Dampa in Libis, Quezon City.

Other than those calcium and iodine -rich yummies, my dad-in-law also missed Dinuguan, so he ordered one…

Of course it was seafoods galore!  We had Tiger-Prawn Tempura, Sweet and Sour Lapu-lapu,

Halaan (clam) soup … deliciously soothing!

I cannot imagine a world without baked scallops! hehehe!

Among those sumptuous treats I had with my family in Manila, these two are the ones to be missed…

Purefoods hotdogs (you know that we have raw pork meat in Penang, even various ham but there’s only beef and chicken-dogs).

And, it would take time again before I can dunk my fork at those crispiest Chicken Joy and delightful Spaghetti from Jollibee. I’ll also surely miss that Yum burger and Peach Mango pie… Can someone put up a Jollibee branch in Butterworth, please… hehehe..

On one of our meals at home, Tina prepared Crab meat Siomai, beautifully steamed and was perfectly tasteful but I forgot to capture them in photos *toinks!*

Despite the fact that Penang has been considered as food capital of Malaysia and I and my family and friends are lucky to experience their diverse gastronomic flavors, my palate still belongs to Pinoy foods. :D

Now, if you’ll excuse me, we’ll have Tuyo, Itlog na Pula at Kamatis and Sinangag for breakfast. :P

Happy 2011, everyone!  May we all have a more blessed year.

Here’s to more blog posts about Family.Food and Fun!

cheers!

THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, LA UNION (part 2): FOOD PORN!

26 July 2010, Monday–THUNDERBIRD RESORTS, a Santorini-inspired piece of paradise in La Union, Philippines offers infinite possibilities.  Beyond its Mediterranean architecture and interiors that provides leisure and recreation, it’s a foodie’s heaven.

I had the privilege of experiencing the world-class resort and savoring the food with 9 other passionate Filipino bloggers as we gave in to the resorts’ irresistible invitation to a 3-day-FREE accomodation and tour.

After 6 hour-trip from our meeting place in Makati City to the resort itself at Poro Point,  we were brought first to VEGAS CAFE; a restaurant and bar adjacent to the FIESTA CASINO of  THUNDERBIRD RESORTS. It was indeed a fitting feast 3 days before I submit myself to a whole new universe as I begin to work as a medical college lecturer abroad.

I smiled from ear to ear when I learned that we’ll be having an order-and-eat-what-you-want meals during our stay.  How can you resist  such prelude to indulgence? :)   Best of all, everything’s FREE (thank you, TBR!).

Take a peek at OUR GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURES

Ala Carte LUNCH at VEGAS CAFE, TBRPhilippines

A basket of freshly baked breads and butter…

CHEF’S SALAD, PhP 250+ Iceberg lettuce topped with strips of Swiss cheese, chicken, beef, & your own choice of dressing. Surprisingly, the serving was humongous! Larger than anyone’s appetite. :)

SEAFOOD CHOWDER SOUP, PhP 150+, One of the BEST tasting chowder I’ve ever tasted.

SUSHI-SASHIMI COMBO, PhP 750+ This was my personal choice for lunch. Beautiful, isn’t it?  :) Yummy too!

BULGOGI, PhP 385+ a Korean dish made of thinly sliced beef marinated in slightly sweetened soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic.

SEAFOOD MEDLEY (left), PhP 480+ Grilled prawns, salmon and dory. SURF and TURF (right), PhP 500+

I washed down my Japanese treat by savoring a tall glass of ripe mango shake…

Desserts, anyone?

PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE (left), PhP 200;  Puree of pumpkin with cream. PANACOTTA (right), PhP 200 Italian rum and milk pudding.

Then I and other fellow bloggers had a cup of brewed coffee.

End of lunch.  Burp! :)

Let’s move on to OUR DINNER on the same day.

At around 8PM, all of  the 10 invited bloggers were shuttled to the Vegas Cafe again after a relaxing afternoon at our cozy and spacious deluxe rooms. Dinner was ala carte again and we’re not complaining. :)

Everyone agreed to mostly Pinoy and few Asian dishes for our sumptuous supper.

CRAB and CORN SOUP (left)POTATO SALAD and SEAFOOD PENNE PASTA (right) from the spread.

KARE-KARE, a personal favorite; however I want the peanut sauce creamier and thicker.

CRISPY PATA. Let’s not talk about calorie count, ok?  Indulge, whenever possible. LOL! :)

Thai dishes, anyone?

KHAO PAD (left) and PAD THAI (right).

SINIGANG na SUGPO, another classic Pinoy favorite. The more sour, the better.

CHICKEN INASAL (left) and FOUR SEASONS (right)

After dinner, half of the group decided to burn the calories by strolling the distance of about several meters from  Vegas Cafe to the hotel. Perhaps, most of them absorbed the thoughts I shared about digestion and food intake.

A glorious morning came the next day and I thought I woke up in Greece. :)

We were advised to take a heavy buffet-breakfast at OLIVES, the restaurant located near the lobby, enough for us to last for the scheduled City tour that day.

Few minutes after I had those 2 plates, a glass of fresh four seasons juice and a cup of coffee, we headed to our La Union City Tour (last part of this blog series).

We had a long but fun day that we savored every minute in places we’ve been to.  We were brought to a locally famous and quaint hole-in-wall restaurant in San Fernando City. It’s called HALO-HALO DE ILOKO which boasts of, what else but Halo-Halo and other Ilocano dishes.

This late merienda was another new stimuli for my palate.

clockwise : OKOY TIKYOSKO, PhP 85+ : shrimps, sprouted monggo, squash, malunggay leaves. It was a vegetarian feast. HALO-HALO de Iloko, around P135+ : has all the ingredients plus a bit of strawberry that wasn’t found in my glass. :( EMPAREDADOS or Native Hamburger/Sandwich PhP 80+. It’s a pair of fried buns with Vigan longganisa, mayonnaise filling.

That was indeed a satisfying heavy merienda.

After which, we were brought back to the hotel and since my fellow blogger and I have to leave that night for Manila while the rest of the group still had their 3rd day at the Casino the next day, we were offered to try pizza at OLIVES before being heading home.

Wood fire-baked pizza…

We tried PIZZA ILOKANO, PhP 400+ (left): Tomato concasse, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, Vigan longganisa, tocino, tuna and onion.and PIZZA QUATTRO STAGIONI, PhP 470+ (right) : Kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, parma ham, fresh mushrooms, and mozzarella.

Good food.

Enticing place.

Great company.

One passion.

Thank you, THUNDERBIRD RESORTS and to my fellow Pinoy bloggers–Ann, Kristel, Betty, Sol, Hanna, Vince, Estan, Oggie and Ferdz, it’s a pleasure to have dined with all of you in these digestive feasts :)   Burp!

IBAYO : PINOY FOOD & MORE

My family and I grew up appreciating Pinoy food from Barrio Fiesta. It’s one of the local restaurants that we frequent for much needed comfort foods like Kare-Kare, Crispy Pata and other native dishes.

It’s good to know that the 3rd generation members of the Barrio Fiesta restaurant chain brought out innovation in introducing IBAYO, a bistro style food place that’s so true to Barrio Fiesta’s classic taste done with a modern twist.

IBAYO, literally meaning, “the next town,” offers new and exciting line of signature food and cocktail redefining the classic Filipino dining experience.

clockwise : My 5-year-old son, Gabby enjoying his Ripe Mango shake, fellow blogger-friend, Elna’s Sago’t gulaman fish bowl, and my glass of Four Seasons. (see menu at the end of the post for cocktail bar list).

21 July 2010, Wednesday 7PM. –I was one of the invited guests who graced IBAYO’s bloggers’ night.  And since I’m stretching and literally counting my days before I go to my new work place in Penang, Malaysia next week, I maximized the event by enjoying it with my kid.

Upon seeing some familiar faces, Gabby and I sat down with Elna and her sister, Che. It was fun meeting the faces behind the blogs I follow.  Soon after our acquaintance, the introduction to Ibayo and the people behind it was done. Then, they announced that it’ll be an ORDER-WHAT-YOU-WANT dinner.  It sounded like music to our ears! LOL! :)

Take a peek at some of those dishes we feasted last night.

After browsing the menu, I spotted immediately dishes I favored. One of them was Mama Chit’s special.

MAMA CHIT’s SPECIAL : A feast in a bilao as how their beloved Mama Chit would prepare it. A mini fiesta in itself.

CRISPY PATA, anyone? :)   Forget hyperlipidemia while you indulge once in a while, LOL!

clockwise : Ibayo Firesticks (zesty jalapeno & cheese rolled up and lightly fried to a spicy, exciting challenging appetizer), Paella Negra (paella cooked in squid ink), Pinoy version of escargot a.k.a. Ginataang Suso, and a personal favorite, Seafood Kare-Kare (mussels, crabs, shrimps, and fish fillet and veggies simmered in creamy peanut butter sauce).

Among the native delicacies perfect for dessert or merienda, I chose another favorite, Maja Blanca. Their version doesn’t disappoint; I like it. :)

Gabby had his bowl of  Special Halo-halo that he didn’t finish because the serving is huge for his appetite. :)

All in all, I appreciate people behind IBAYO for being so brave on trying to reinvent a Barrio Fiesta’s tradition. Ibayo is highly competitive with the other food places that offer Filipino cuisines. Foods on the menu are  great and reasonably priced. Service is surprisingly quick. Staff is accomodating and friendly.

Two thumbs up for Ibayo!

For more details on Ibayo, visit my other blog,  Docgelo’s Eyes

Ibayo is located at Bldg G Unit 7-8, San Miguel By the Bay, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

Special thanks to the owners of Ibayo, Mr. Ramon, Tyrone and Tristan Ongpauco and  and to Ms. Abigail Delos Santos and Eventus Kinetix for the invite.

POWER BREAKFAST

OK, so I’ve been trying to stretch my days with my family and friends after I found out 2 weeks ago that I’ll be flying to Penang, Malaysia on the 29th of this month, together with more or less 30 other great Pinoy doctors, to teach in a pre-med and medical college there.

Am I excited?  Extremely.  Although, I already experienced being away from Tina+Gabby when I left for Tokyo for 14 days last March, I’m still having mixed emotions about leaving my family temporarily and meeting new challenges ahead in another country that I’ve never been to.  I wish my wife and son can follow me there the soonest possible time; hopefully in a month or two.  I also wish to deliver my job beyond expectations or at least, more than effective than I do here.

Got my on-line ticket reservation paid just this morning and it began to sink in that in 9 days, it will be a start of a new adventure.

How do you relax when everything seems a rush?

I pray, talk to my family and closest friends, eat and eat a lot :) and more importantly, spend time with myself.

Last 15 July 2010, I headed to a hotel-restaurant that I’ve been frequenting lately because of their generous invitation. What else but Oakroom Bar and Restaurant at the 6th level of Oakwood Premier, Joy~Nostalg Center in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

I put to use the Complimentary Breakfast Buffet voucher they gave me on my last wine and food pairing event that I’ve attended with some other press and bloggers.

On ordinary days, I try not to skip breakfast. I’m such a morning person and I like starting my day with a cup of coffee prepared by Tina and anything that suffices my empty stomach.

Tina and Gabby didn’t join me for this Power Breakfast for they both got work and school on that day.

Tina would’ve love Oakroom’s cereal and milk bar, and I know Gabby would’ve like the DIY congee.

Of course it could have been more fun if I’d share these plates with them.

Nonetheless, it gave me brief time to be with myself and think things over a cup of coffee and plates of indulgence. :)

plate 1: scrambled eggs, bacon, hungarian sausage, sweet and sour fish fillet and a high-fiber bread with apricot spread.

plate 2curried veggies, penne pasta, pan cakes with butter and blue berries, orange juice.

plate 3 : some bread sticks and bite-sized pastries, fruit choices : pineapples, apricots, melon, peaches, pomelo,  guava juice (which I just tried for the first time) and strawberry yogurt (wish it was fro-yo, LOL!)

Burp! :)

I know I’ll miss champorado’t tuyo, danggit, itlog na pula+kamatis, lugaw, tocino, longganisa and of course,

pan de sal.

What’s your favorite breakfast meal?

LONG QUEUE ON BUZBOX

As far as I know, my wife wasn’t on her ovulating state when she extremely craved for this latest mall craze… :)   I guess she just wanted to relive a piece of her childhood memory and share it with Gabby.

It was last week  in SM Megamall foodcourt when we saw a long queue toward a new kiosk that I initially thought was selling phone cards, LOL!  We soon found out that it offers innovated versions of an old Pinoy favorite street food : SCRAMBLE!

It took 7 days more in another SM Mall (Marikina City) before we sampled BUZBOX SCRAMBLE, which is from the same company that introduced Turk’s Shawarma kiosks also in malls around the Metro.

This new kiosk really revives the  Pinoy craving for scramble. Their simple edge above other sweet treats is their cheap price. A small cup costs only  PhP 10, medium cup PhP 13 and large cup PhP 17…. PLUS if you want to add toppings to your pink crushed ice craze :

It was Tina who really want to try it; she wanted to compare its version from the taste of usual scramble from street carts.

I’m not fond of it when I was in my growing years and Tina hasn’t had a cup of it in decades. But surely, seeing it in malls brought back memories. This was perhaps, part of this kiosk’s charm.

BUZBOX SCRAMBLE, anyone ?

So my wife’s craving was satisfied; she finally tried Buzbox scramble and our son, Gabby got to try it too, but as for me, it was just OK; nothing to rave about except its affordable price and tremendous success it has been reaping from curious customers.

Do you eat scramble?

Have you tried Buzbox?

BIYANAN

For most married couples, dealing with difficult in-laws is always an issue. Thank God that I don’t have to worry about that thought because I am blessed (I believe so does Tina) with nice and warm “second family.”

Tina’s mom and her brother came home from San Leandro, California last Saturday for a month-long vacation here. They have to attend to some social gatherings and facilitate process of some insurance documents.

We’re thankful that despite the haziness and almost zero visibility in NAIA terminal 1 on the day of their arrival, their flight wasn’t diverted to other local airports unlike the others.

My mother-in-law who has been living and working in California for more than 5 years now, is usually mistaken by most people in the U.S. not as a Filipino or any other Asian woman, but as Spanish and/or Latin-American because of her natural and ageless physical and inner beauty.  Tina, I and her siblings would agree that their mom is prettier than them!  What made her even more simply attractive is her pleasant disposition in life; that includes being my biyanan. She’s really cool, inside-out. :)

Needless to say, she’s easy to get along with. And so am I. :)    That is why when she requested her daughters (my wife included) her preferred food for their arrival dinner, we didn’t think twice to obliged. After all, what she wished to savor as they reached home were those all-time-favorite Pinoy foods that I’m guessing she dearly missed.

clockwise from top left : bagoong, hilaw na mangga, adobong pusit, saging pang-himagas, pork sinigang, pritong tilapia fillet.

That Adobong Pusit and Pork Sinigang were only substitutes to my mom-in-law’s original request : Alupihang Dagat or Mantis Shrimp that wasn’t available when we went to Nepa Q-Mart to buy.

Have you tasted Alupihang Dagat already?  I haven’t.

And did they like the dinner we prepare?  Of course! :)

For married people who read this, how are you with your in-laws?  Are you the same with one of my long-time friends who call hers as “out-laws!” ? lol!

WAWA

Dear Gabby,

Sometimes I wanted a quick escape from hassles of daily living in a nearby province where fresh air and tranquility are common.

I envy your Lolo Ben, Tito Mac &  Ninong Melton and 2 of their friends for what they did last Sunday.  While we’re lazy spending the first day of the week at home, they went to Wawa Dam in Rodriguez, Rizal, the province formerly known as Montalban.  It’s the town that comes after San Mateo, Rizal, Marikina  and Quezon Cities.  Your Tito Mac is generous to share his photos taken from their trip.

The provincial welcome sign has the dam’s replica on top…

No, they didn’t go there via four-wheeled vehicle but by bikes. You know how your 60-year-old Lolo Ben is still very groovy as he continuously joins cycling events like Tour of the Fireflies with your uncles..Look how he’s geared to the form that day! Japorms ang tatay ko, ano? :)

While your Tito Mac was in his usual cheerful self…

It’s amazing they’ve reached the place after long hours of bicycling…Your Tito Mac and Ninong Melton’s second time to be there; and first for Daddy or your Lolo Ben…

The scenes at Wawa Dam are simply inviting …

Rock-filled stream…

lush greens…

crystal waters…

They went to market to buy something to grill…

At the area near the stream, they parked their bikes.

Then they grilled these…

and had a fun picnic…

I can just imagine how relaxing the atmosphere in that part of Rizal…

perfect spot to doze off…

beside a river that runs through it...

Kiapo or water cabbages (where the name of Quiapo, Manila was rooted) are also abundant.  Nice!

I think this is the must-see-spot in Wawa Dam : the two great rocks where Bernardo Carpio , being of great strength, was believed to be trapped.  When you study Philippine folklores in years to come, you’ll learn that  some say he is keeping the mountains from crashing into each other (similar to the Greek titan Atlas holding up the sky), and some versions say he is trapped and trying to break free. When Bernardo Carpio shrugs his shoulder, an earthquake occurs.  (Sourced via Wiki).

The merging of those streams underneath those legendary mountains is just awesome!  Who knows we might find time and go there someday too.

For now, enjoy your bike; you’ll have your own adventures when you grow up! :)

I love you, anak!

:) Tatay-doc

MUCH ADO ABOUT SUMMER

I have a confession to make.

This may disappoint most of you but Tina and I are not fond of going to the beach during Summer. We prefer to soak under cold shower (together? that’s another story that does not deserve a blog post! LOL!)  rather than bathe and immerse on water under the scorching heat of Philippine Sun.

Other than budget consideration during peak season, we enjoy sand, water and what beauty that nature has to offer when it’s not thickly populated.  As you may know, my family’s recent beach adventure was last week of October 2009  when BORACAY was in its quiescence…

Tranquility echoed every morning during our days in the island…

Ah, Boracay! When do we get to enjoy your crystal turquoise water and powdery sand again ?  It’s not only the beach that’s glorious in this island but digestive feasts too. Summer heat reminds me of spoonful cold treats we had from Boracay’s HALOWICH.

And since we’re not hitting the beach anytime soon, you may now have a clue of how we define SUMMER in our own way…

Yesterday, Tina, Gabby and I went to Iceberg in their Timog Ave. branch to have bowls of Halo-Halo.

What’s a Summer in Manila without it?

For only PhP 98, I enjoyed macapuno balls, slice of peach, sweet plantain, corn kernels, corn flakes, jackfruit strips, ube jam, gulaman on shaved ice topped with ube and strawberry-flavored ice cream!

While Tina and Gabby chose to savor Caramel Flan with Mangoes and Vanilla Ice Cream. Yum! :)

Summer for us, is a great excuse to devour on these cold gastronomic pleasures.  :)

What’s your favorite food fit for Summer?

How are you spending your Summer?  I bet most of you are busy treading on most shores of this archipelago.

Have fun!  :D

OUR PLATES LAST WEEKEND

FRIDAY –After my office handed me my passport+visa and allowances, I went to SM Megamall to buy things that I’ll need for my month-long training in Tokyo.  Before shopping, I had my late lunch alone…

Although Buco Pandan Shake, Max’s Fiesta Plate and Halo-halo literally filled my tummy, I still felt half empty without Tina+Gabby on the table with me. :(

That’s why last…

SATURDAY — As I tried my best to stretch our weekend family bonding 3 days before my trip, we found ourselves in this all-day-breakfast restaurant once more…

Gabby had that milkshake again; this time he tasted what they called BLACK  and WHITE… sarap!

(at Mr. Jones, the entire volume of their blender is served; excess on a canister)

I had to thank my wife for her suggestion to have our Saturday lunch at Mr. Jones again.:)

A relaxed and casual ambiance is coupled with great tasting food in huge servings at Mr. Jones. It was only our second time to dine there but we declared it’s officially included in the list of our favorites!

We started with a warm bowl of CLAM CHOWDER.

We usually favor thick soup and Mr. Jones’ Clam Chowder is otherwise; but since it’s so flavorful and creamy, we still give our two-thumbs up!

The first time we were there, Tina enjoyed Mac and Cheese.  Last Saturday, she opted to try another entree from the menu. She passed on the pasta choices and had FISH and CHIPS...

Surprisingly, it’s bland fish fillet but there’s always that salt and pepper on the table to spice it up a bit and its 3 dips of vinegar, mayo and ketchup also did the trick. It wasn’t that oily; was only OK for our taste.

I thought of ordering US BEEF RIBCAP & TAPA GARLIC OVERLOAD which I had last time (it’s one of the great-tasting tapa!) but opted to try SUPERMAN BURGER instead…

Did I like Mr. Jones 350 grams Superman Burger ?  It stimulated my palate so well; I was so overwhelmed!  The ham on top with caramelized onions is so tender and tasteful too!  This plate is another must-try from Mr. Jones.

We left our seats and went off from Mr. Jones with to-go of our leftovers; I told you, the servings are huge enough to share or for take-home.

For desserts, we had scoops of gelati from GELATONE!

It was nice to partake in their fund raising that afternoon to help out donate books via foundation to less fortunate kids. A portion of their income from 12noon to 4pm that Saturday for every scoop of gelato sold is given as donation. What a way to enjoy italian ice cream for a worthy cause.

We had Mango (for Gabby), Ferrero Rocher (for me) and Frutti de Bosco (for Tina).  Tina’s choice is my favorite from Gelatone; it’s a mixed berry-flavored sorbet.

Ms. Tess, the owner herself met us inside her resto and offered us free samples of freshly made Pistacchio gelato. She pointed out that there’s a lot difference in the taste of frozen gelato compared to the newly prepared one; the latter is tastier of course.

Kudos to Gelatone for being kid-friendly establishment! :)

Outside the store last Saturday, children’s books -in Filipino and English were sold at a discounted price due to the charity event. We bought Gabby 2 story books that he took home with a smile.

SUNDAY came and we headed off to church. It’s usual for our family to visit Antipolo Shrine (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage Cathedral) and hear mass before going on a trip.

Our late Sunday lunch was at Goldilocks, Sta Lucia East mall.(Yup, we went places last weekend–from Makati to Antipolo!). We had Halo-halo again ( isn’t it a staple every summer?) and some of our favorites…

Kare-Kare and Pancit Malabon…

Beef Kaldereta and Fresh Lumpia…

Thank you Lord, for all the blessings! :)

Next post hopefully, will be about you know where. *wink*

10 YEARS MORE TO A CENTURY

:) FAMILY + FEAST + FUN = Sundays never get better than this!

Yesterday, January 24, just before the clock strikes 12 noon, my wife, Tina with our son Gabby and I were already at the venue to attend my paternal Lola Tentay’s 90th birthday celebration with almost all of our relatives from my dad’s side.

Yes, there was the queen of the Pinoy feasts ~ lechon (roasted pork), courtesy of my cousin, Dr. CSM from New Jersey and a simple lunch buffet to everyone’s delight.  Check out my glutton’s plate, lol :D   (click photos to drool more  enlarge)

My dad got the lechon plate for us to share :D   Nevermind the cholesterol content; a reunion like this doesn’t happen on a daily basis!

Our Tita/Ninang Glo with her husband, Tito George who both came home from LA, Ca sponsored and provided us color-coded T-shirts with embroidered logo for the occasion. Yellow for all apo (grandchildren) and mga apo sa tuhod (great-grandchildren) and red shirts for all of Inang Tentay’s children.  The venue :  Calumpang Gymnasium in Marikina City.

Who would have thought that this gym was deluged few months ago by the unforgettable Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana)?  The Calumpang gymnasium is located literally along the Marikina River…

The simple spread was provided by a relative-caterer, Martha’s Plate.  The feast was unpretentious; nothing fancy but deliciously satisfying! :D

There were Chicken-Shrimp Sotanghon, Fresh Lumpia, Fish Fillet, Chicken Pastel, Beef Morcon, and of course, a cake!  Everyone had Buco-Pandan for dessert (which I forgot to capture).

After lunch, our balikbayan-uncle hosted the program with more than greetings and well wishes for our Lola but fun parlor games too! There were games for everyone!  Even the guests participated and all had nothing but cheers and widest smiles!  BTW, Gabby had his share on stage with his 5-stanza poem that garnered applause. Tina and I are so proud of him! :D

The reunion-birthday party could have been happier if all our love ones abroad could come home especially my mom in UAE; and our relatives whom we visited in NZ before but now all living more comfortably in Melbourne.  Nevertheless, it was indeed another family gathering to remember.

We all went home with similar wishes for our good Lord to bless our Lola Tentay with more years to be with us.

:) Aren’t you proud as a Filipino that we value family and family-ties?

Till our next family-bonding moments!

OUR FIFTY-PESO-NOCHE BUENA

:D How different was your Christmas dinner ?

The day before Christmas, Tina, Gabby and I went home again.  We visited my parents’ place in Pasig City.  Since we’re living in Quezon City for 3 or 4 years now, I certainly missed putting up our old Christmas tree. Its ornaments and decors, particularly the memories that come with each, are even older than our five-year-old son. :D   Seeing it again made me miss more our late Lolo Meliton and Lola Idang, our maternal grandparents who have been happier for years now in God’s embrace. I miss them specially during occasions like this.

We also miss our mom who’s in UAE for work.  She just can’t put down her job for a ton of reasons.  My 3 brothers, our dad and I definitely felt her absence; spending our very first holiday (in my 33 years of existence) without her. :(   We just settled with a phone call and a few webcam chats with her.

Tina, Gabby and I also went to my maternal aunt’s house in Karangalan Village, also in Pasig which was flooded by typhoon Ondoy last September. Thankfully, they’ve fully recovered without a trace of the incident.

Like our late Lola, our Ate Bunso (my mom’s one and only sister) would always packed her cooked yummies in microwavables for us to bring home and this year was no exception. We had her leche flan, gelatin and fruit salad as our ‘major’ loots. :D She also prepared Dinuguan and Menudo with pickles or what we call, Luto sa Pickles that Tina served for our dinner back home.

Unintentionally, Tina and I literally did not spend even an effort except for frying our ham for our Noche Buena this year. Since we got 2 sweet hams (1kg each of Purefoods Fiesta Ham and another kg of King Sue Ham), 2 bottles of red wine and a small quezo de bola which were all gifts to us by Tina’s employer and a Reverend-family friend, we decided to just buy 10 pieces of brick-oven-baked pandesal to celebrate our Lord’s birthday. :D

So while the rest of the world were eating in upscale restaurants or at home, enjoying their expensive Christmas feast, Tina, Gabby and I were all happy to have our own Noche Buena with only, believe it or not,  PhP 50-cash-out, LOL! :D

Tina and I sipped a little of red wine, Gabby had his bottle of yakult!  Solved! :D

We’re truly grateful for all the blessings – big and small.

How was your Noche Buena?  I hope you had fun too.

Regardless of what you had on the spread, or wherever you spent it, I wish you have enjoyed it with your love ones and kept the meaning of Christmas in our hearts. :D   Happy Holidays!

DO YOU EAT KAMARO?

IMG_3361

Believe me, it wasn’t intentional.  We did not plan to eat  pig-out at a Pinoy restaurant on a holiday in honor of Ninoy Aquino’s assassination some 26 years back. But it was not that bad after all.

IMG_3349   IMG_3351

It has been half a decade since we last dined at one of Cabalen’s branches in a mall. I admit that my parents are the ones who prefer it just as they like other food places that offer Filipino cuisine.  I and my wife are not fond of going out just to eat the same food that we have at our own dining table at home. In short, we’re not fan of home-style cooking, sorry.  But I have high regard with those establishments that made efforts in putting Filipino cuisine upfront. My wife and I with our friends enjoy CLASSIC CUISINE PHILIPPINES or C2  and CHEF LAUDICO’S BISTRO FILIPINO.  Both of these restos offer Pinoy food as gourmet and with nice twists and taste.  And did I tell you that CAFE ADRIATICO’s    Lola Ising’s adobo and Lolo’s pancit canton binondo are to-die for? :D

We could have eaten our brunch last Friday, August 21 at a pizza and pasta resto, or a fastfood perhaps, but for no particular reason, our feet were drawn to Cabalen’s all-day-buffet and there was no regret.

My starters were a bowl of  beef stock with corn,  fried crispy kangkong with mayo dip, some mango and tomato salsa with bagoong and a slice of red salted egg, some onion rings and pork and tofu a.k.a. tokwa’t baboy…

IMG_3355

Not bad actually.  Even in Kamayan whenever we dine at Dad’s Ultimate Buffet that includes Saisaki and, yes, Kamayan, I do not miss to munch on those cripsy kangkong.  I also liked Cabalen’s mango-tomato-bagoong salsa. The green mangoes were chopped to bits, which for me was the best rather than having unriped mangoes in chunks.

One of the Pinoy dishes I cannot resist is Kare-kare or stewed beef in peanut sauce with bagoong (again).  I like the peanut buttery sauce and the VEGGIES : string beans and egg plants, cooked with ox tripe and ox tail …- Good Heavens, I am salivating now as I write this! :D

IMG_3360

My second plate had Pampanga’s bests — from tocino ( I hope they don’t use salt peter), longganisa and atchara or pickled papaya.  I had Kare-kare too, and of course garlic rice.  I like the distinct taste of Cabalen’s longganisa, it’s so flavorful. Isn’t it obvious that I like local version of sausages? lol. From Vigan’s to Lucban’s, I like garlicky longganisa paired with tomato salsa!  Man, I can eat it any time of the day!

IMG_3358

My wife’s plate had similar dishes from Cabalen’s buffet spread except she sampled their fried chicken which I avoided for I had eaten too many of them over the past weeks.

For our desserts, Gabby, Tina and I tried Cabalen’s guinataan and halo-halo.  What I like about the minimal dessert spread was the presence of a huge bottle of coconut milk or kakang-gata. It’s actually an ingredient of guinumis – local cold sweet treat of crushed ice with coco milk, gulaman and pininig or rice crispies.  You can also make your own guinumis from the spread at Cabalen.

Tina suggested we put coconut milk over halo-halo instead of the usual evaporated milk.  As an obedient husband and a food enthusiast, I surrendered to her craving.  She was right; halo halo’s better with coco milk as we enjoyed it! We just added syrup to taste.

The guinataan was also great with those strips of jackfruit and sweetened bananas and generous amounts of small balls of tapioca. IMG_3367

Everything tasted OK except for the red gulaman of the halo-halo. It tasted like soap suds for goodness sake! I immediately called the attention of the waited and told him of our concern.  He immediately responded by removing the square bowl of red gulaman from the spread and I noticed he reported the incident to his manager.  We were in a hurry as we already paid our bills so we did not spend time bringing the matter to the manager. I appreciated the move of the wait staff.

We did not plan to eat at Cabalen, but nevertheless, we enjoyed it.  What we intently did last holiday was honoring Ninoy and Cory’s ideations and contributions to Philippine democracy by simply wearing yellow that day.

IMG_3354    IMG_3363

Cabalen’s Eat  All You Can P298 per adult; half price for kids; located at most malls in the Metro.

But wait!  While I was getting my food from the spread, I noticed a distinctly Kapampangan dish that I learned from Kuya Kim Atienza’s report in TV Patrol World ( a local news ) that this was one of Ninoy Aquino’s favorites…

IMG_3365

Do you eat KAMARO or cricket ?  No offense to all Kapampangan, but I don’t.   I call myself a food enthusiast but not a dare-devil and an adventurous as you are.

To each his own.  :D

FOOD BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES

1

TAPSILOG - a popular all-day-meal for most Pinoys but usually served at breakfast consisting of dried or cured beef or tapa, fried garlic rice or sinangag and fried egg or pritong itlog – hence its name; commonly garnished with atsara or pickled green papaya.  It’s suggested to be dipped in vinegar with chili for that added spice.

This became a staple food once during my medical clerkship rotations back in 2000 to 2001.  And eating it again after almost a decade from the same food joint was indeed nostalgic for me.

As one of the lowest in the hierarchy of medical staff  then, I was tasked not once but several times in different hospitals to list down the orders of the medical team on duty, order it through phone call every single meal time within the 24-sometimes-36-hour-duty-duration after deciding where to call for a  delivery.  Usually, the chief resident if not his or her subordinates decides on where and what to eat.  I’m not sure if it was still part of the medical training but nonetheless, that experience whatever you call it, taught me somehow that ‘patience is really a virtue’ and the importance of flexibility in dealing with various people and most essentially, the value of practicality when need arises.

You can just imagine that eating again in this locally established food joint that now reached the Link in Ayala Center, Makati was sort of a blast-from-the-past for me.   When my wife Tina told me that she wanted to try for the very first time this popular combo-meal, it felt like my clerkship days were just yesterday.

IMG_2777

And since I became so familiar with the sweet and spicy taste of TAPA QUEEN, I ordered it last weekend and Tina opted for TAPA KING which has the original flavor.  Each cost PhP 125 now.

Our son Gabby tried to finish his bowl of champorado but failed to do so.  When I tasted it myself, I honestly thought its simplest recipe needs improvement.  You can never fool kids with taste or anything; they’re just so honest.

IMG_2776  IMG_2770

The taste of TAPSILOG from TAPA KING has been the same through the years.  What I liked most about foods from  TAPA KING include the tenderness of the beef and that very Pinoy sense in every plate.

ANOTHER FIRST INDULGENCE

Last Sunday, my wife Tina, our son Gabby and I went to TriNoma mall in Quezon City to have our almost-weekly grocery shopping.  But before pushing those two grocery carts shelf after shelf, we enjoyed our lunch at this small but very charming cafe.

1

One thing that I and my family share and enjoy so much is our own passion towards eating good food.   It doesn’t need to be pricey although I personally developed the preference to that flavorful and appetizing dishes;  it must be  deliciously stimulating not only to the palate but to the senses too.  I guess my wife was severely infected.  :)   I am also bias with good plating and nice presentation of food combined with fair ambiance.  And surprisingly, all of these we found in CAFE MARY GRACE  in TriNoma.

2

It was our first time to dine in this quaint food place and it was far from being unpleasant. I like the homey atmosphere and that very inviting interiors. With the use of well-polished wood furnitures and interesting tables with notes and wonderful comments from diners written in different stationaries and some in colorful cards adorn the glass table tops.  One may easily notice that no table is alike in CAFE MARY GRACE  because of this well-thought-of concept.

3Tina and I were delighted that our preschooler son, Gabby was beginning to feed himself with adult food.  He’s still picky on solid food and usually prefers chicken from Mcdonald’s.   But last Sunday, he asked for two dishes – a soup and a dessert.  So we ordered SEAFOOD CHOWDER, PhP 137 for him…

4

While I had my own plate of  SPICY LEMON SCAMPI,  PhP 268.80.   I  like it,  sarap,  but I certainly wish that they have a BIGGER SERVING to satisfy my HUGE APPETITE.   Nonetheless, it was really worth a try! :)

5

SPICY LEMON  SCAMPI is made of fresh pan-seared shrimps atop linguini  noodles in a sauce made  of lemon juice, chili flakes, minced garlic and extra virgin olive oil.

I found this pasta so delicious that I can probably eat it everyday.  LOL  :)   It’s not irritatingly spicy and has the ingredients that I like best – SHRIMPS!!!   My plate was wiped off in a few minutes. :)

6Each plate of pasta and starters like salad (which we’ll try on our next visit) and soup comes with toasted bread.  Unfortunately, Tina had preference to her order, and disliked mine.  She had this CLASSIC CARBONARA PASTA, PhP 202.68.

7

CLASSIC CARBONARA is a creamy pasta with mushroom and lots of bacon bits.

8

For our drinks, we tried Cafe Mary Grace’s home-made iced teas.  Tina had her glass of PEPPERMINT and FRUITS, PhP 75 and I had RASPBERRY ICED TEA, same price.

9

These tall glasses of iced teas were refreshingly bubbly that made me want to  try their other concoctions – SANGRIA and HIBISCUS soon.

On the list of desserts, Gabby singled out MANGO BENE so we ordered it, but few minutes after, the waiter came to our table, apologetic that he admittedly did not inform us that they ran out of that cake.  Sayang, it looked gorgeous on its picture at the menu.  I appreciated though, the courtesy of the wait staff.  So Gabby settled with his second choice – a slice of CHOCOLATE CAKE, PhP 80.

10

It was perhaps a blessing in disguise that we’ve tasted Cafe Mary Grace’s version of the usual favorite chocolate cake.  It has the right amount of sweetness, with caramel filling and that richly thick chocolate fudgy icing that would make you crave for more.

11

These moments are priceless…

WHEN SIZE MATTERS

IMG_2654

This isn’t  an ordinary pizza,  it’s enormous !!!

It’s our first time to try JUGNO’s  MONSTER PIZZA . With its humongous size of 20 inches and a choice of  2 to 4  flavors,  it does not disappoint. :)

2

Whenever we go home to my parents’ place where my 3 brothers also reside, we commonly see empty boxes of this pizza after several times that they had deliveries without us (envious)… :(    So I just copied the contact info on my mobile and it was only last weekend that we’ve tried it.  My wife Tina made the call for the delivery, and was told to expect that monstrous pizza at our door approximately an hour and a half from the time she ordered. Nonetheless, with our  gluttonous hungry stomachs, we agreed.  Surprisingly, the pizza was delivered after forty minutes.  The rider was courteous I gave him a hefty tip.

We had four flavors  and requested for 16 slices (you can also have it at 8 or 42 slices perfect for parties).

We had CHEEZ MUSHROOM…

3

A quarter of the entire pizza was BACON…

4

Another quarter was MEXICAN AMIGO…

6

And JUGNO’S MONSTER SPECIAL…

5

It even came with 3 different types of dips – salsa, sour creme and the other one was foreign to my palate. The pizza was already flavorful with or without those dips…

IMG_2664

What’s my favorite among the 4 flavors we sampled ? I tried them all and I can’t single out what’s better than the other. :)

The price of that 20 inch-monstrous pizza was only PhP 519.  Since our domestic goddess household help went for a day off, we were only 3 last Saturday – my wife Tina, our son Gabby who finished a slice and a half and me.  We put the leftovers at the fridge and had it as breakfast the next day. :)

So if you’re within the Metro, you may want to try Jugno’s Monster Pizza too…

TATAY-DOC’S DAY!

Warning : This post contains gastronomically stimulating photos and you may want to have a glass of water with you while you view. Enjoy…

I celebrated Father’s day with my wife, Tina and our son, Gabby for two consecutive days at two different venues.  Needless to say, I’ve got the happiest stomach last weekend!

After Gabby and I got sick of mild viral infection last week, this year’s Daddy’s day out had more meaning by being thankful that we both regained our health as if nothing happened.  It’s but logical to enjoy the weekend and savor another family bonding moment.  We attended anticipated mass last Saturday afternoon at Greenbelt Chapel  (that I’m posting after this entry) after our hearty lunch in Glorietta 3.   Amidst the countless restaurants in Makati, there’s one spot where Gabby loves kani tempura  the best… yes, our 4-year-old son already prefers crab tempura better than hotdogs and burgers!  So we usually have buffet brunch or dinner at one of the affordable buffets in the Metro, where else but…

IMG_2306

That’s my first platter of sushi, tempura and few slices of sashimi from Saisaki.  Dad’s Ultimate Buffet includes Saisaki and Kamayan that offer Japanese and Pinoy food spreads respectively (and continental for Dad’s).  We always have these blue plates which also mean cross-over buffet or access to those 3 buffet sections.

And just after finding our table at Saisaki, the manager on duty  (ispooting na ispooting in tux, LOL) asked us if we would like our Ebi tempura to be served at our table (so as to avoid stampede at the buffet spread-JOKE!), he got my approval ofcourse!  I was too weak to resist, LOL.

IMG_2293

Then I walked through the open kitchen where I found my favorite Japanese soup Sukiyaki  (I’m not a fan of miso soup, sorry), while  Gabby opted for the thick and creamy seafood chowder from Kamayan.   Take your pick…

  IMG_2292   IMG_2310

Surprisingly,  SAISAKI was having a theme of SUSHI IN THE CITY (a delicious spoof of sex and the city series) so the spread of sushi and sashimi improved a lot better since we last dined there few months back.  The yummies were presented more stimulating to the palate and to eyes.  If you like these Japanese starters, feast your eyes on this spread… (I repeat : these plates were at spread, not on our table, LOL)

 2  3

There’s an art in every roll…

5  4

It’s advisable to call and make a reservation for table/s  or at least to be early before the doors open at 11AM for lunch or at 6PM for dinner buffet.  We were just on time for lunch last Saturday and I’ve clicked my cam on those gastronomic delights.  Those tamago rolls (egg)  are one of my favorites, with California maki and other sushi. The tuna and salmon sashimi were just right at every slice, without that fishy after taste, they were really perfect for soyed wasabi!

6  7

By mere posting this I’m craving again for those yummy sushi!   Tina had her own preference, this was her plate… 8

I like that shredded crab sticks with Japanese sticky rice and generous slice of ripe mango wrapped in nori;  my wife shared it to me and it was really sarap!

Now if you don’t fancy those sushi and sashimi, I can’t blame you but you should know you’re missing the world, LOL, anyway, you might be interested with the other spread most especially the desserts…

Before those delightful sweets, let me show you the plate I didn’t finish… well, almost. I just stuffed and hid the few slices of left-overs with tissue papers and used chopsticks … This was my carnivorous-protein-rich platter from Dad’s and Kamayan… While on the right was my surprised gift from Enervon prime adult milk given by a promo lady.

IMG_2316  IMG_2295

The roasted pig’s skin was crispy as expected. I also enjoyed the salty sweet ham from Dad’s but I was surprised that the staff in the carving station put 3 slices of ham on my plate when I only asked for one. I didn’t notice it because my eyes were glued to the other dishes, LOL.   So I failed to eat them all, sayang.  The roast beef was not that tender. I asked for 2 slices from the medium well-done part but still it didn’t pass my expectation. But the Lengua from Dad’s is always a winner for me.  The slices were far from having gum-consistency and the mushroom gravy was also perfect.  Tina also had ceasars salad from this spread which she shared with me. It’s healthy to eat fruits and veggies in between during buffet dining…

IMG_2284  IMG_2283

There’s so much more food in Kamayan but we only had few bites of bibingka with muscovado and puto-bumbong…

IMG_2286  IMG_2289

On with those desserts :  This was Gabby’s plate after he munched on those kani tempura.

9

His mom got those for him from these plates at the buffet…

10  11

Tina and Gabby got scoops of ice cream in strawberry, mocha and chocolate flavors.  The scoops were also bottomless however we only had these cups and tasted other favorite sweet treats…

16191718

While Gabby was enjoying these bite-sized cakes and pastries, I got some fibrous fruits from Saisaki and Tina had Buco-pandan from Kamayan…

IMG_2322  12

When I paid the bill, I asked the manager to validate my DAD’S  HAPPY DINER card (which they hand in to customers after dining) and by doing so, we’ve completed 10 required signatures thus we’re already given one FREE BUFFET on our next visit (Mon-Thurs) before August 19.  Count few weeks and we’re off to Dad’s again, LOL.

After each buffet in Makati, whether it’s on Dad’s Saisaki Kamayan or in hotels (we’ve tried Dusit Thani and Shangri La’s Circles Events Cafe, you may want to hit my search engine here to view those posts) we always try to roam the entire Makati shopping district, LOL, to burn those calories and cholesterol we ingested.   So after that “ultimate” lunch, we strolled Landmark, Glorietta and Greenbelt which I’ll post next…

BURP!

DAD’S ULTIMATE BUFFET include KAMAYAN & SAISAKI -GLORIETTA 3 MAKATI – (632) 892-8898.

Ultimate Buffet costs PhP 590 for adults, half price for kids.

TANGHALIAN

I’d like to be a chef or at least enrol in a crash course in culinary arts  around  five to ten years from now  (OK, I know  it’s ridiculous to announce it too soon but I’m still preoccupied with something else, LOL).  What drives me into this?  I’m always fascinated with the following :

#1.  efforts exerted by a cook or chef  in preparation and cooking processes.

#2.  art of plating a dish.

#3.  gastronomic stimuli, palatal pleasures and different tastes.

#4.  eating/dining/enjoying food/ science of nutrition – whatever you call it.

Let me enumerate the things I can miraculously do in front of a stove – fry whatever, boil water (is it considered cooking?), boil egg in water, boil rice (that’s too much boiling steps right? LOL),  spaghetti, sinigang or meat/shrimp/beef in sour stock, and nasi goreng which I learned from a local TV show during one of my days off.

My interest on learning how to cook in the near future (read : I’m not really ready now) was greatly influenced by my wife.   She likes cooking but can’t afford to do it on a daily basis. She also loves to watch FOOD NETWORK  and introduced me and our 4-year-old son Gabby (who also dreams of becoming a chef, perhaps we can be classmates)  to IRON CHEF AMERICA.  Do you watch that show on cable ?

Based upon the Japanese cult sensation, Iron Chef America carries on the legend of Kitchen Stadium and the famed “secret ingredient.” Each week, world-class chefs battle the legendary Iron Chefs of America: Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, Masaharu Morimoto and Cat Cora. Alton Brown serves as Commentator and Mark Dacascos is Chairman.

I only catch it whenever my wife’s  in control of the boob tube.  And the last delayed episode that was shown here  was the battle between Iron Chef Mario Batali and challenger Chef Jamie Oliver, “the Naked Chef” (his own cooking show is called as such for the title refers to his cooking without preservatives and processed food; nothing about nudity, sorry ladies).  The defender won over 3 criteria : TASTE, PLATING, ORIGINALITY ( Batali scored 50 vs  Jamie’s 47 ).   I was  inspired with the episode thus I asked my wife to cook for me, LOL.
   IMG_2225

A plate of buttered tilapia fillet and veggies (on a cucumber boat), with mango salsa (chopped green mango, tomatoes, onions, cucumber)  and a cup of boiled rice topped with shredded green mango twith bagoong.

That was my plate prepared and cooked by Tina, my lovely wife yesterday;  appetizing, isn’t it?  Frankly, she doesn’t cook and present our plates this way on a daily basis.   She hardly even cook as I’ve mentioned and far from being EXCLUSIVE domestic goddess  but I’m not complaining because she’s a working mom.  She does the kitchen work whenever possible, mostly during her days off – and since last weekend was a long one, it’s so nice of  her to give in to my request and the result of her efforts was much appreciated.

LUNCH @ TIENDESITAS

Our son’s preschool teachers had scheduled their one-hour orientation today since it’s a national holiday for the celebration of Philippines’ Independence Day, so even working parents like us could attend.  After our meeting with them, my wife Tina, our son Gabby and I went to TIENDESITAS  in Ugong near Ortigas Center, Pasig City for our lunch thus we became part of this scene…

IMG_2141

Tiendesitas, organized and developed by the same people behind Greenhills Shopping Center, is a shopping haven that only promotes nothing but Philippine-made products. It’s comparable to Jatuchak in Bangkok, Thailand but only a smaller scale since Jatuchak weekend market is one of the largest in the world. We’ve also been there back in January of 2004 for our honeymoon and we saw it’s really humongous with countless stalls to choose from.

Since it’s an open-air-food-court-fiesta-type- dining in Tiendesitas, we sorted out our meals from 3 different food stalls.

CRAM OMELETTE, PhP 140 from Casita Bibingka has generous crab meat per serving with rich taste.

IMG_2136

CASITA BIBINGKA is one of the many choices at the Food Village of Tiendesitas that offers affordable Pinoy dishes.

2009-casitabibingka

We also had ADOBONG PUSIT, PhP 130, delicious with those tender squid in that authentic adobo flavored sauce however we found it a bit oily for us.

IMG_2138

I was craving for lechon (roasted pig) for the past few days now and my gastronomic yearning was met when we saw this…2009-junlechonIt was a delight for me to see JUN2 CEBU LECHON that offers native roast pork, LOL.  I ordered 25 grams of that sumptuous Pinoy pork dish, PhP 175.   It was delicious sans gravy or sauce.  It’s roasted skin, though cholesterol-rich, was crispiest and crunchiest.  It’s meat was so tasty from various herbs and spices and saltiness filling that the pig had while roasting made it distinctly delicious from other LECHON across the country.  Lechon Cebu was noted by US Chef Anthony Bourdain no less as the most delicious in the entire planet besting roasted pigs from Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Bali and other places; was even documented not only in Bourdain’s No Reservations cable TV cooking travel show but in Time magazine as well.

IMG_2129IMG_2128

IMG_2133

After our lunch, we went from stall to stalls in Tiendesitas and before heading home, Tina and I grabbed a bite at Vigan’s EMPANADA from MAC’S DELI VIGAN EMPANADA and OKOY.   Each Vigan empanada made and fried in front of you is sold at PhP 40 each or PhP 110 for 3 empanada.  What makes Vigan Empanada different ?  It has crunchy fried wrapper and one whole egg in veggies-filling,  perfectly dipped in Ilocos native vinegar or sukang-Iloko.  2009-viganempanadaAlthough there’s a better version of Vigan empanada in Glorietta foodcourt and nothing beats the taste of the original Vigan empanada cooked and sold by the manangs in front of the church and plaza in Vigan, we found Mac’s deli Vigan empanada not that bad to satisfy one’s craving.

Patronizing Filipino products and eating Pinoy foods are just simple measures to hold on to our roots.  It’s nice to eat Pinoy dishes especially on holiday - Araw ng Kalayaan pa!.. =)

TAG-ULAN HAPPY MEALS

What can be more comforting during cold rainy weather than a warm bowl of congee with boiled egg served homemade by your love one, naks!    These were what my wife Tina prepared for me and our son Gabby the other day as our late afternoon snack.  Other than that irresistable rice porridge topped with crispy fried wonton wrappers and browned garlic, she also prepared and deep-fried vegetable rolls  a.k.a. pritong lumpia  with sour dip made of vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, chopped onions and salt and pepper.  IMG_1731

A couple of hours after savoring this hearty snack, Tina served the dish I fondly call “Killing-Me-Softly” LOL.  IMG_1693The plate had pieces of deep-fried pigskin, a.k.a. crunchy chicharon or pork cracklings, and few chunks of deep-fried pork knuckle and pork leg a.k.a. as crispy pata.  She prepared it herself.  I know it isn’t healthy, and to say that it’s fatty is such an understatement, but what can I do?  Resistance is futile, LOL.  I was weak to say no!  It’s crunchy and cripsy and we don’t eat it daily anyway, LOL. We only eat it once in a blue moon (defensive!).

I just wish I had taken a lipid-lowering agent or could have ran a mile after that fatty dinner.  Eating vegetables and fiber-rich diet can also wash off excess cholesterol from the systems.

Another hit during rainy season, at least for us Pinoys, other than hot soups are champorado or chocolate porridge, with tuyo or fried fish and milk, freshly oven-baked pan de sal and a cup of coffee.

What are your cravings during ”bed”-weather ?

FRUTA DE JACK

I was extremely surprised seeing its size as I came home from work last night… IMG_1685Its size was overwhelming!

Its fragrance was pleasantly overpowering it lorded our entire space.2I only saw its fraction as my wife and our housemaid already sliced it into half… Imagine its entirety!

3Its sweet fruity scent emanated from its starchy and fibrous flesh.

4

Do you like jackfruit ?

Well, we do,  especially if it’s huge and sweet.  Best of all, it was given to us for free!

IMG_1687

IMG_1690IMG_1688

What dishes of jackfruit do you like?  What about the seeds, do you cook and/or eat them too?

IMG_1691

It can be roasted just like chestnuts or simply eaten after few minutes of boiling.

Well, my wife Tina prepared a common merienda as our dessert last night : turon with langka.

IMG_1696

Turon is a Filipino dessert made of banana and jackfruit wrapped in an eggroll wrapper.

With its multivatimins, antioxidants, potassium and fibers, I call it POWER TURON!

TALANGKANIN

PBA09113s2sn

What did you have for lunch today?

My wife and I chose to stay at home since we had a dose of dining out the past few days and decided to cook a meal inspired by the teleserye she follows.  Tina likes Diether Ocampo so much that she religiously watches his latest TV series ONLY  YOU adapted from a koreanovela (that I am not familiar with until my wife watches its local version)  about a love torn between 3 characters amidst cooking Asian cuisine.  Diether plays a chef who fell in love with Angel Locsin’s character who’s a chef-wannabe and had a chance to learn how to cook a recipe called TALANGKANIN  from the mom of Sam Milby’s character when they were sent to Korea for a sponsored  course on culinary arts.  Apparently, I also get to watch it while I’m on-line at night, as my wife rules the remote control of the boob tube.

We became interested with the dish from that show, it’s made of crab fat in rice, more locally known as Aligue rice  and decided to prepare it for our Sunday lunch.   We didn’t forget to but a bottle of taba ng talangka or crab fat yesterday from SM Megamall grocery, and I volunteered to buy the other ingredients in a nearby talipapa this morning as I was  excited to cook the dish with her.

IMG_1471

We googled some sites which shared its ingredients and cooking instructions.

Ingredients include :

1/2 kg of shrimps, shelled, deveined

2 tsp of sugar

*2 tbsp of cooking oil

a bottle of crab fat or aligue

3 to 4 cups rice, cooked

1/4 cup spring onions, chopped

salt and pepper to taste.

- *my wife preferred to use Anchor butter  than cooking oil which made our version of the dish more sinful.

Steps in cooking  (our version) of TALANGKANIN / Aligue rice

1. Heat oil or melt butter in a stir fry.

2. Saute onions and garlic.

3. Add crab fat, salt, pepper, sugar and cooked rice.

4. Add the shrimps, mix,  and cook for 3 minutes.

5. Top with spring onions and add a side dish (optional).

And the result was….. (applause, applause please…) a very flavorful, iodine-calcium-cholesterol rich dish!

IMG_1478

Be sure to take your lipid-lowering agent after savoring a plate of this talangkanin LOL.

She even made an effort to serve it in style with garnishing and side dish a-la restaurant !

IMG_1498

Tina had her food in a bento box but didn’t finish all of it, she had to refrigerate her leftovers.

IMG_1508

What completed our Sunday lunch at home were other yummies cooked and sent by my aunt. Who could resist a leche flan for dessert?

Have you tasted Talangkanin ?

DO YOU DIG 168?

The other day, my wife Tina and I went to Ylaya Street in Divisoria where textiles are cheaper than you can imagine, to buy what else but cloths.  We want to update our wardrobes so we bought materials for her uniforms and my blazer which we wear at work.  We’re sending it to our costurera / tailor who usually does our workwear for the longest time.

But just before spotting that immaculate uniform and suit materials, we went first to 168 mall.  Have you been to 168 in Soler Street?  It’s an airconditioned haven of cheap finds and a paradise to hagglers.  Most of the items for sale are from nearby Asian countries where labor, just like here in Pinas, is cheap !  We go to 168 mall usually to buy party needs -from invites, to party hats,  balloons to loot bags and giveaways!  We go to 168 mall and Juan Luna Street in Divisoria for nice finds like towels, socks, handkerchiefs in good quality but of  lesser price.  Onions and garlic and other farm goodies such as broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and fruits are also sold in the sidewalks of Divisoria.  However, the disadvantages of going to Divisoria are the traffic (so I suggest you commute or take LRT/MRT), the snatchers (no-wearing of anything that sparkles, lol), and the fetid streets ofcourse. Nonetheless, I’ve seen Madame Imelda Marcos herself before at Tutuban mall, and what I’ve seen on news on TV that she also went to 168;   the likes of Tessa Prieto-Valdez too, is a self-confessed  Divisoria shopper.

Just when Divisoria shoppers are in need of quick bites, there’s a huge foodcourt  in 168 mall, now with commercially known fastfoods (McDonald’s, Jollibee, Greenwich, Chowking, Tokyo Tokyo, Reyes BBQ etc.) other than food stalls that can only be found in that Chinese-populated district.  During our last visit, we dined for few minutes at an uncommon fastfood, not only to experience again 168 food, but primarily to fill in our hyperactive stomachs then, and made sure that we”ll be loaded in time for traffic going home.

Tina and I shared these Divisoria yummies, lol …

IMG_1129

Although I have preference for Ferrino’s and Kamayan’s, the bibingka (rice cake) of Aldrino’s in 168 mall is a must-try.  Though it doesn’t have muscovado sugar, instead has the usual refined white sugar, coconut shavings and butter, nevertheless, it has the right melt-in-your-mouth tenderness and slices of salted egg that provides contrast to its sweetness.

We had two orders of Aldrino’s bibingka at PhP 60 each.

IMG_1126

See the crowd ?  Despite the long queue for ordering, and the wait to forever before you can have your food, the photo speaks for itself that this stall at the foodcourt of 168 mall sells hotcakes, err, chinese menu that most shoppers crave for. So we also lined up not only to experience what others are having but to have a break from the commonest fastfood food.

CHAMI, PhP  110 (thick delicious noodles! sarap!)

CRABMEAT SIOMAI, PhP 60.  (loser : too much extender and artificial crab flavor)

Have you been to Divisoria ?  How’s your experience in shopping there ?

CAFE ADRIATICO = SARAP!

Apparently I am not content with our celebratory lunch date for mother’s day yesterday because the restaurant my wife and I chose was far from being impressive.  Totally wrong decision!  So I made an effort to convince her for us to try Cafe Adriatico in Gateway mall, Araneta Center this afternoon, to compensate for the bad experience we had yesterday.  This time, it was a sure winner!

Good thing we dined there to have our late merienda/early dinner on a Monday when it wasn’t packed.  We got to enjoy the ambiance and food before we went shopping for our weekly needs to a nearby grocery.

From the wide choices in the menu, to the interiors, to the VERY FRIENDLY and EFFICIENT SERVICE, I highly commend Cafe Adriatico, Gateway!  The wait-staff was courteous and attentive; everyone was smiling at us! Nice!

IMG_1086    IMG_1094

It’s interiors from floor to ceiling is arresting!  The tables and chairs are so simple yet very comfortable.

IMG_1095    IMG_1099

Freebies :  fish crackers                                           Fresh mango juice, PhP 75;   Iced tea PhP 55.

IMG_1124    IMG_1106

Gabby had this PAN DE SAL with KESONG PUTI and butter, served with TSOKOLATE  E,  PhP 135.  The pair of pan de sal had its distinct taste, the kesong puti serving was ample, and the cup of hot chocolate with peanut buttery taste was a unique Pinoy alternative to coffee.

IMG_1107   IMG_1108

Then I was excited to try Cafe Adriatico’s Lola Ising’s ADOBO  or Adobo rice as it’s called by Ms. CZVS of her widely-read blog where I discovered that this food place is amazing.  But she dines at its original Malate branch.  As I’ve stated, the ADOBO here is served at its best. Being the commonest Filipino dish, I guess it’s hard to serve it with a twist or at least to make it spunky but Cafe Adriatico was successful in doing so. Their adobo recipe is a must-try!  Spareribs were tenderized and served in a soyed rice with achara as side dish.

LOLA ISING’S ADOBO, PhP 330.

IMG_1119

Tina wanted to eat noodles so she ordered pancit canton. It was again served with distinct TSINOY (Chinese-Pinoy/Filipino) taste.  While we’re savoring its taste, we wondered what ingredients were used for it to be that delicious. It’s another usual favorite yet it can impose as another gastronomic stimulant.

LOLO’s CANTON BINONDO, PhP 215.

IMG_1114

As we know our son’s preference for something sweet, Tina ordered LECHE FLAN for Gabby.  When I tasted it myself,  the flan didn’t appear to my palate as the usual egg yolk-milk-and-sugar, but it had a twist of having a lemony taste.  Sarap!

Leche Flan, PhP 68.

IMG_1110IMG_1113IMG_1097IMG_1096

Cafe Adriatico Gateway also serves breakfast as early as 7AM, I’m excited to try it and as well as the other entrees.

PINOY FOOD ART

I believe in anything creative and innovative especially if it’ll champion anything Pinoy.

img_06051201282151

One of my college friends of 16 years and counting,  Rob  usually comes home every 3 months from his work abroad. Now that he’s here again, I and my wife Tina asked him with another best friend LG to try weekend brunch at  Chef Laudico BISTRO FILIPINO at the Fort.  When friends agreed, we made a reservation and the staff of the said resto immediately emailed me of the menu featuring more than 50 of their dishes.

The staff who received my reservation call told me that the weekend eat-all-you-can brunch which is offered at PhP 788 adults and PhP 488  for kids below 10 years old;  prices plus VAT and service charge,  all food served at plated half of their ala carte portions, starts at 10AM & ends at 3PM.  We came in early in full pack only to find out that they’ll open late at few minutes before  11AM.   So we strolled along the 3rd Avenue and  found this sculptured monument of fishermen as we crossed the street going to a common favorite fastfood for quick drinks and apple pies.

  img_05141

Poetic, isn’t it ?   After few minutes, we headed back to the resto…

img_0513

Somehow, I already had expectations from this restaurant that promotes Pinoy cuisine at its best not only because that I got the menu a day before in my Inbox, but I read tons of comments and saw some photos of its food posted on blogs.  There are positives but ofcourse, there also the opposites as cliche goes, “you can’t please everybody.”   My wife & son, 2 friends and I were a bit disappointed to its late opening yesterday.  Had the staff clearly emphasized that they’ll open at past 10:30AM or 11, then we could have arrived at a later time.  I guess punctuality is a must in service.

Just the same, I also expected the best from what I’ve read about Bistro Filipino, my little fretting on its late opening was changed into amazement at the simple but inviting exteriors of the restaurant & its very romantic Filipino interiors.  First, I was drawn to its logo out of metallic sun & 3 stars; indeed very Pinoy, depicting features of the Philippine flag with a woven sawali  at its corner.  It looks tribal and yet very Pinoy.    EyeLikeIt!

img_0615

The interiors is more dramatic than its exteriors ofcourse.  Its entrance alone is already attractive with capiz chandeliers to welcome you and sinamay drapes dividing the restaurant into 3 longitudinal dining areas.

3

                    41        51

                   img_0538         61

The intricate details are spontaneous and consistent  to the small, clean toilets where Pinoy tribal arts served as damask stenciled prints that were sponge-painted on blue walls continuous to the ceiling; the toilets are not only well interiored but more importantly adequately equipped with essentials.

The walls at the ends of each dining area are provided with huge antique-looking mirrors creating an illusion of distance and depth on the interiors of the resto.  Here’s the end with round mirror….

9

Then here’s the wall with rectangular mirror…

101

I don’t know about you, but I like the middle area where we brunched.

Because we found our place under the green stars, figuratively.

We were seated under this romantic black chandeliers with faux emeralds.

img_0518

Now, the menu.  It’s creative and innovative.  It’s apparent that Chef Laudico Bistro Filipino attempts to elevate Philippine cuisine to where it should be.  I am not a chef and far from being a culinary arts expert but  I highly believe that our own dishes should be recognize as a global cuisine just like japanese, continental, chinese, thai, mideterranean  and others.  Bistro Filipino is one of those gourmet restos that serves well-prepared and high quality food however, improvement on taste of FEW dishes won’t hurt but will do more good.

So here are the dishes my wife, kid and 2 friends feasted on from Chef Laudico’s Bistro Filipino…

img_0542            121 133SISIG BASKET :  ingenious serving of bite-sized pork sisig, with thin slice of quail egg at its bottom.

 142       15

TUNA KILAWIN ROLL :  raw and tangy!

16         17

STUFFED FISH BALLS (left) :  nothing unusual, really.

PRITO FRIO (right) : a better version of okoy made special with shrimps, squid rings and another seafood i missed out.  It comes with 3 various dips that were uncommon to my palate.  I like this appetizer.

18                19

SHITAKE MUSHROOM SOUP (left) :  I don’t know about our best friends but my wife and I like this soup so much. There’s the distinguishing taste of the mushroom itself, sarap!

3 KINDS of MANGO SALAD (right) : I had this one and as a sucker for anything with mango, LOVE IT!

20

EGGPLANT TORTA with SPICY CRAB : my friend Rob  generously shared portion of his omelette to me and Tina.  Never expected tortang talong can go so gourmet!  Bravo! LOL.

211

GARDEN SALAD (with choice of dressing) :  LG had this one. Never tasted it, so no comment =)

22

US  ANGUS BEEF KARE-KARE :  I ordered this because I’m a huge Kare-kare fanatic; quite OK, only that beef was shredded, why?

231

WAGYU and LENGUA ESTOFADO :   I, Tina & LG ordered this dish and I was so excited to grab my knife at the WAGYU BEEF but I think we’re one in saying that it’s probably (still) best eaten as a STEAK for not to be overpowered with the sauce.  I understand how estofado should taste and there’s nothing wrong with its sauce; only that we didn’t get to taste the WAGYU! Plus the lengua could have been sliced thinly and not served as an obvious chunk of ox tongue.  The sauce, the lengua all compete with the WAGYU, in the end nothing wins!  =(

24

SALMON  ESCABECHE  Sayang, only my friends tasted this plate.

When we called the waiter to order for something more, we all felt we’re all satiated but I myself was weak to resist the other dishes on the menu. So we tried some more…  It was time for the PASTA…

25     26

PRAWNS and BURONG MUSTASA (left) : I had this plate. I highly commend Chef Roland Laudico for being so daring on using a very Filipino green with one of my favorite seafood (no one, for me, goes wrong with shrimps!) but I honestly cannot appreciate the pasta probably because I’m already full at that time, but my palate was craving for some kick at this pasta and found nothing.

CALAMARI with CRAB ROE (right) :  LG and my wife Tina had each share of this pasta. But Tina didn’t get to finish it so (not to avoid the PhP 100 fine for every unfinished plate, but it was again, sayang) she fast-break  it to my plate.  Again, I’m such a seafood lover and I’m someone who wouldn’t pass on something with shrimp, or squid, moreso with crabs! But this pasta has (for the lack of a better term) an overpowering taste (again!) plus we found it too DRY!  Don’t get me wrong, I like pasta whether it has tomato/cream/herb/oil-based sauce/s, but this was just too strong for me.  To each his own, right?

272         281
ALL SMILES for the GOURMET SILOG! : my wife Tina & our son Gabby.
291
US  ANGUS BEEF TAPA with GARLIC RICE stuffeed in TOMATOES with EGG with SALTED EGG CUCUMBER SALSA :  This one’s a winner for me!  TAPSILOG at its best! plus thanks to the chef-creator, I’ll make his salted egg and cucumber salsa a  home-baon-favorite !
Finally, the DESSERTS…. Usual Filipino sweets were never given such recognition until this resto gave it a best shot.
img_0605
MAJA BLANCA CHEESECAKE :  I’m so easy to please and EyeLOVEthis!  Another ingenuity of Chef Laudico! Putting the common merienda maja blanca into cheesecake was really something!  But what caught my discriminating taste was the use of COCONUT JAM as its drizzle. Another MUST-TRY from this resto! TWO-THUMBS UP!
img_0608
BANANA  Q  TART  :  Another creative innovation of a simple favorite Pinoy snack.  Never tasted this one, my friend Rob had his fork on this, but I think it’s also perfect to end a sumptuos buffet.
img_0611
DECONSTRUCTED SANS RIVAL :  I am so familiar with the common sans rival but this one from Bistro Filipino was truly deconstructed. I think it’s a misnomer to call it sans rival for it tasted like macaroons or chewy sticky rice cake;  just sooooooooo far from the usual sans rival. I just didn’t get its taste, sorry.
 img_0555       img_0576
SPANISH CHOCOLATE (right)
MOLTEN CHOCOLATE (left)
Just when all of us four were enjoying and discriminating the taste of this brunch, my son Gabby was having his time at these 2 choco-treats.  I just had them on photos, not on my palate.
Our drinks included lemongrass iced tea, iced and hot tea, brewed coffee. The brunch also offers assorted sodas and sampaloc (tamarind) juice (gotta try it next time!).
I’m very particular at service of any establishment, especially when I know that they’re charging it on our bill. The staffs of Chef Laudico Bistro Filipino, in all fairness, were discreet in getting orders and courteous and polite but IMO, they should add their volume to compensate on the number of diners.  It was not only that they opened late
yesterday, but some of our beverages and food were also served late.  Again the biggest room in the world is IMPROVEMENT.
Nevertheless, with its romantic FILIPINO INTERIORS, and some really tasteful innovation of PINOY FOOD especially the desserts and some entrees, I’d still bring my family and friends AGAIN to Chef Laudico BISTRO FILIPINO for us to enjoy other dishes on the menu.  It’s recommended for most balikbayans who are longing for Filipino cuisine with a twist.
——————-
Medical Dose :  Ingestion of something rich with carbohydrates is the stimulus of INSULIN secretion from the beta cells of the pancreas.  Once an individual eats, his brain stimulates the Islets of Langerhans specifically the beta cells to release INSULIN to carry and transport the product of  catabolism(breakdown) of carbohydrates which are simple sugars or glucose towards liver cells or hepatocytes, muscle cells or myocytes, fat cells or adipocytes for it to be deposited as GLYCOGEN (stored glucose) in the process known as Glycogenesis.  Once EATING is BEYOND 2 HOURS, such as in BUFFET EATING, the individual develops HYPERGLYCEMIA or increase glucose level in the blood because the brain can only stimulate INSULIN SECRETION for only 60 to 90 minutes or less than 2 hours.

MANN HANN

You know that a restaurant serves yummiest and reasonably priced foods when diners need to queue and wait for a table during lunch and dinner. Luckily for the three of us (my wife Tina, son Gabby & I), even if we arrived at exactly 12 noon today, we didn’t have to wait that long as we revisited Mann Hann in TriNoma mall, Quezon City.

Among the many chinese restaurants in the Metro, Mann Hann is one of our favorites. We already had lunches and dinners with our families and friends at their branches in SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia and ofcourse, TriNoma. Ambiance in all of its branches, is plain and simple, unpretentious, very unlikely other oriental restos. The entrees in Mann Hann’s menu have distinct taste served within few minutes after you made the order, by courteous and efficient staff.

And these are among our favorites :
img_0359
LECHON MACAU, PhP 205. Crisp, deep fried pork belly.

img_0360
SPICY SQUID, PhP 215. Not-so-spicy, tender slices of fried squid with bagoong & calamansi dip.

img_0357
YANG CHOW FRIED RICE, PhP 195.

img_0353img_0364
LECHE FLAN, PhP 50. for Gabby. We also had WONTON SOUP, PhP 125
and a liter of HONEY LEMON ICED TEA, PhP 100.

CONTI’S

Physiologically speaking, there are three phases of regulation of gastric (stomach) secretion & motility (bowel movement a.k.a peristalsis). These 3 phases are CEPHALIC, Gastric & Intestinal Phases. I’d just like to point out that there is really a scientific basis on how our digestive system is stimulated with the mere sight or an aroma, or taste of food or any beverage. Upon visual, olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste) stimulations, these send signal to the brain activating the “parasympathetic or cholinergic” responses. As result, the parasympathetic neurotransmitter acetylcholine will be release from the nerve endings in the head & elsewhere enough to stimulate salivation, gastric acid secretion, & bowel movement. In short, cephalic phase of gastric secretion & motility regulation is as simple as making the stomach ready for digestion. Getz? Now these medical concepts explain why even as simple as looking at photos of food, we tend to feel hungry or make us salivate, worse drool of hunger, LOL.

Enough with the blah blahs of medicine. My blog is called BEYOND TOXICITY for one reason that I don’t intend to post anything TOO medical & stick to my other interests which include FOOD ofcourse! View the rest of this post & see if there’s truth to CEPHALIC PHASE of gastric stimulation, LOL.

This afternoon, I & my wife Tina (without Gabby this time, he needed to stay home for we went to a wake before we) went to Trinoma mall in Quezon City for a much needed grocery shopping. Before doing so, we decided to eat merienda (afternoon snack) at CONTI’S.

img_0300

I like the interiors of Conti’s. It’s relaxed, comfy, in cool yellow & fresh green palettes. The seats & tables are also uncomplicated for the pleasure of simple dining experience. Even the toilet, though small, is adequate with essentials & basically clean. Most of all the foods are special at Conti’s; so affordable too! The entrees are deliciously stimulating, the pastries & cakes, for the lack of better description, look good taste even better (oops, sounds like other food’s tag line!)

img_0302

And my wife’s meticulous & picky taste for nice foods was satisfied. We were both content with what we ordered & promised ourselves to eat frequently at Conti’s to try something else next.

These are what we feast on…

PHILLY CHEESESTAKE, PhP 160.
img_0306

LINGUINE in PESTO SAUCE with SEAFOOD, PhP 220.
img_0308
I love PESTO. I love SEAFOODS. I love them both in pasta. This is simply delicious!

MANGO BRAVO, slice PhP 105.
img_0311
This is also lovely. I love anything with mangoes, most especially if mangoes are chilled. This is one of the yummiest mango-based cakes I’ve tasted. Its sweetness is just right. It’s not irritating to the teeth. Makes you not feel guilty of eating glucose-rich. What’s interesting with this cake are its various layers that render different texture to palate. It has the usual icing, & a bit splash of chocolate, & most of all, it has layers of broas (lady fingers). Definitely a must-try whenever you visit Conti’s.

We were looking at the fridge near the counter where they keep the cakes on sale, & my eyes were glued for few minutes at the whole MANGO BRAVO cakes. I politely asked the lady at the cashier counter if I can take photos for my blog of those yummiest mango cakes but unfortunately she was clueless if i can click my cam. So I just told her, “Miss it’s Ok, never mind…” But don’t get me wrong, it was really OK (but it would be better if she said yes, considering this is FREE ADVERTISEMENT for them… I just wish she knows what blogging is, LOL, no pun intended! ) other staff especially the waiters on duty a while ago were efficient with getting orders & refilling our botomless iced teas (Php 70).

We just can’t go without pasalubong for our 4-year-old son Gabby. We opted to buy Conti’s ensaymada, PhP 25 each.
img_0323

It’s surely WON’T be our last visit at Conti’s.
Can’t wait to try other food & pastries from their menu.

Burp!

EAT’S A DAY IN CUBAO

I left the house the other day for some errands;
I needed to go early so I managed to eat breakfast late outside.
I found myself in BUTTER DINER which is a stone throw away
from Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

At first, I was skeptical to eat my first meal for that day there
for I saw some people drinking buckets of beer early in the morning.
Those guys probably just finished their work shift at a nearby call center.
Heck, my stomach was screaming for something
so I had this plate soon after I walked in to order…

four bacon strips, 2 scrambled eggs, french toasts with maple syrup & butter & a mug of hot brewed coffee

four bacon strips, 2 scrambled eggs, french toasts with maple syrup & butter & a mug of hot brewed coffee

this meal was decent enough for less than PhP 200 including charges.

It was my first time in BUTTER DINER but it existed since God knows when
at the ground floor of Shopwise in Araneta Center, Cubao.
The waiter had a smile & was friendly & quick to take the orders.

butter_dinner

The interiors was hip, only if they have kept it more crisp & tidy.
There was a feeling of 70s to 80s era inside that small resto
where memorabilia from those years in Hollywood, both in music & movies
were used as decors on the wooden & glass walls.

A couple of hours after, I met my son Gabby & wife Tina
at Gateway mall before we hit the grocery.
It was lunch time then so we decided to eat.
I tried the FIESTA PLATTER from TACO BELL..

fiesta rice, seasoned ground beef, fiesta salsa salad, potato bites with cheese sauce

PhP 129, another affordable meal !

It was OK but too plain for me.
I prefer TACO & BURRITO of TACO BELL.
Tina asked me if I wanted something for dessert.
I suggested Razon’s Halo-Halo.

summer in manila won't be complete without it

PhP 73 per Halo-Halo.
Not bad for thinly crushed ice, which I so love
very unlikely of the other Halo-halo that taste like ice-pebbles, lol.
It only has leche flan, macapuno & sweet bananas as “halo”
making it uniquely Razon’s. =)

BLUE PLATES

Yesterday, Tina & I decided to bring Gabby to
Dad’s, Saisaki, Kamayan’s Ultimate buffet in Glorietta.
It’s been awhile since we had those “blue plates” (read : used for crossover buffet).

I like their HAPPY DINER’s promo card that entitles the bearer to one FREE BUFFET after completing 10 validations. Being frequent patrons, we already claimed one free buffet few months ago & at present we only need one more “blue plate” to complete a new HAPPY DINER’s promo card.

Here’s a quick peek at what we had on those blue plates…

my plate

my plate

My first blue plate was almost full of jap rolls, kani tempura, tamago rolls,
& grilled pork slices & squid skewers…
I also had sukiyaki which was OK, hot
& was served with a smile from the jap cook station,
it was sweet and bit salty, with tender beef slices, glass noodles & some veggies
but that of Umu in Dusit Thani (read my former post) was to-die-for,
perfectly marbled beef served with delicious broth sent me to the seventh heavens.

my wife's

my wife's

Tina requested for EBI TEMPURA and one of the waiters brought this to our table…

I also had slices of Dad’s ham, roast beef, & lengua in mushroom sauce,
(fyi, I only eat lengua in Dad’s) coupled with paella…

Little bit of Asia…

Kamayan’s pride : Bibingka served with coconut shavings, margarine & muscovado..

Our four-year old son Gabby had these on his plate as starters…

immediately sweets!

Gabby also had one glass of refillable iced tea that came with a colorful fish stuffed toy.
All in all of our 3 blue plates (crossover buffet/dad’s ultimate buffet) + bottomless iced tea inclusive of all taxes & charges : PhP 1421.
(we only paid half price for Gabby).
It’s a steal, don’t you think?

WE’RE IN HEAT!

No, my wife isn’t ovulating now, lol.
Neither one of us has fever.

I’m so glad with our dinner last night, well, not quite.

The HAPPY PART :
My wife Tina, our 4-year-old son Gabby & I got a chance to dine with my sister-in-law Doc Bibs and her hubby Nurse/Chef Jun with their baby Raphael. We seldom see each other, blame our busy schedules. It was recharging after a long day at work seeing a 14-month-old kid eating adult foods with a big appetite. =)

The NOT-SO-HAPPY PART :
I was disappointed with the buffet stations at HEAT, Edsa Shagri-la Hotel.
Most of my favorites were not included in the menu.
I know it’s bad to compare open-kitchen-dining in hotels since they all have something special to offer but I can’t help it. =( Last February we got to try Circles Events Cafe Buffet in Makati Shangri-la Hotel and only last Sunday we were delighted in Dusit Thani’s Family Sunday Brunch (see my previous posts) and last night’s dinner in Heat just didn’t top my list, sorry.

The JAPANESE STATION :
Although it looks good on photos, it actually lacked lots of things essential for it to be more interesting.
I asked the staff if there’s SUKIYAKI (read: 3 days ago I tasted the best Sukiyaki in Umu of Dusit Thani (refer to previous post) with the most tender beef & perfectly seasoned soup; there was none in Heat.
Next thing I looked for : TAMAGO ROLLS but for the second time I was unsuccessful.
Then I asked for TEPPANYAKI station and it didn’t surprise me to know that again there was none.
I was also craving for EBI & KANI TEMPURA but I only found MIXED TEMPURA which were mostly VEGGIES
at the ORIENTAL/CHINESE section where Peking Ducks are also served.

I asked the staffs at that station : “Sir, Do you have EBI and KANI TEMPURA?”
Two of them replied : “NAKAHALO NA PO DYAN

Paging the management of HEAT :
There’s always room for improvement and I think your resto has lots of potentials,
in all fairness.
You would’nt want be SECOND BEST

Umu, Tosca, Benjarong & Basix of Dusit Thani or

At anyhow, we enjoyed each other’s company.

but I still do wish that there would be great improvements in HEAT.
There should always be value-for-money!
Oh, I forgot, we ordered HEAT ICED TEA JAR
unknowingly (because we did not ask and did not check the menu)
for a whopping price of PhP600 !
We paid PhP 1,210 per pax plus service charge PhP 544
plus VAT 12% PhP 652.80
plus L.tax Food PhP 53.24
plus L.Tax Bev PhP 18
These made me insomniac that night!
tsk tsk tsk =(
It’s very unlikely with other HOTELS that offer OPEN-KITCHEN DINING BUFFET
on a NETT CHARGE! (Dusit Thani’s Sunday Brunch offers buffet inclusive of drinks : iced cold green teas, lemon grass juice, 2 kinds of wines plus freebies for kids).

What was good with HEAT : Buffet comes with FREE COFFEE / HOT TEA.
Kids below 5 (?) also eat for free.

FYI HEAT stands for HEALTHY EATING AMAZING TASTE.
was it really amazing?
ugh, c’mom!

AFTER THE WIN

The morning after Gabby’s win from his declamation contest, Tina, Gabby & I went Eastwood City, Serendra & Bonifacio High Street just to have another weekend of family bonding.

We went to Something Fishy in Eastwood to avail of their buffet breakfast. It wasn’t our first time to dine there but after today, I’m not sure if it’ll be our last.

img_4076

img_4074

I & Tina are very picky on food taste & service. Both of us are very particular on courtesy and smiles from waiters & resto staff. It makes dining a better experience if all of the crew is as pleasant as the food they serve. The service crew & staff of Something Fishy Grill & Bar did not offer a smile or welcoming gestures except for their security guard who also serves as their door man. IMO, the food on the buffet table of Something fishy was not that impressive. It’s just too plain for me & ordinary or something like “you-only-get-your-money’s-worth” kind of thing. It’s perhaps one of the cheapest eat-all-you-want-breakfast at PhP 114 per pax, exclusive of drinks, inclusive of charges, offered from 12MN till 10AM. We gave it a second shot after our rush buffet breakfast there a couple of weeks ago thinking that there might be changes on the menu list or at least a little improvement. We were disappointed because we were wishful thinkers hoping there would be new addition to their buffet menu list, but there was none. There was NO corn cereals, bacon, ham, fresh fruits, fish fillet, longanisa, tocino, pan de sal & other Pinoy breakfast favorites. Although I admit there are many food choices offered at their breakfast buffet, the taste is just mediocre for me. The fried eggs contained NO salt at all or at least there should have been a salt & pepper at the tables, the daing na bangus was less salty as well, the beef tapa was too oily, the palabok (or was it pancit malabon) was too bland. The price is ofcourse affordable but it should not discount the taste or the food quality. I believe there is always room for improvement & I just wish this establishment will consider doing this.

img_4077

img_4075

Moving on from a not-so-impressive dining experience, we walked around Eastwood City & made Gabby pose for some photos before goint to Serendra…

img_4080

img_4082

Then at around 7:30AM we were in Boni High Street already. Since most of the shops there open at 11AM, we took a stroll, read the Sunday broadsheets (FYI, I read Manila Bulletin, PDI, Phil. Star every Sunday AM), did some people-watching, just enjoyed the morning….

Our bonding is not complete without getting a dose of caffeine from wherelse but Starbucks Coffee…

img_4116 img_4110 img_4117 img_4119 img_4123 img_4113

We allowed Gabby to stroll alone, even tested him of what he’ll do when we leave him. We left him walking ahead of us in Serendra & we hid from him. When he found out that we’re out of sight, he quickly ran back towards where we were. What a reflex from a 4-year-old kid. Tina & I were glad to see he did not cry nor panic given the situation.

We tried CUPCAKES by Sonja in Serendra for the first time & liked it !!! The place, though small, is attractive with retro interiors in pastel colors. The cupcakes are good as they look. But again there were no smiles or kind gestures from the staff. I feel sorry for them because they’re not as pleasant as their work place & work gears…

And just before going home, we went to a public toilet in Serendra right across where Cupcakes is located & Tina can’t resist but to document how Ayala management keeps everything at its best. Even restrooms are posh, similar to toilets of premium hotels, fully airconditioned, clean, well-maintained with supplies of tissues & liquid soap with sensors, even had a landscaping of some greens at the center…

img_41682

img_4169

All in all, we ended the 2nd month of the year grateful to the Lord for everything & we’re happy & hopeful to start the month of March. =)
