EXPLORING POSSIBILITIES

My family and I aspire for a better life; who doesn’t ?

But before you think of anything, we’re NOT going to Canada yet, at least for now.

Two weeks ago, Tina submitted our CVs to a Canadian Consultancy firm that emailed me few days after. We were told that I qualified for the present minimum point-system immigration requirement for Canada. However, their office is located too far from our place so I canceled our reservation to attend their free orientation.

Then another Canadian Consultancy and Recruitment agency texted Tina and invited us to attend to a similar activity. The venue was in Ortigas Center, which is more accessible for us. The 3-hour-free orientation was held at Development Academy of the Philippines on an early Saturday morning.

As expected, it was well-attended by various professionals.   Some people like us came with their kids and spouses.  The speaker and facilitators were compelling. The entire seminar was never boring and we felt the honesty and legality of the talk.

At the end of the orientation, each of the attendees sat in a one-on-one assessment to verify whether one qualifies to apply for an immigrant visa to Canada. And like what I have read from the email of another agency, I’m eligible despite I haven’t taken an English proficiency exam yet (IELTS/International English Language Testing System).

It was Tina who passed IELTS twice with both band scores of 7.0 (perfect score 9.0); first when she took it while we’re on a 7-week-break in Auckland, New Zealand then 2 years after it expired (IELTS has validity of 2 years), she took it again,  here in EDSA Shangri la conducted by British Council Philippines.

She took  IELTS test as a part of the requirement that led her to enlist herself under California-Board of Registered Nursing (yes, my wife is already registered nurse in Ca-BON) and also gained her a US Visa Screen Certificate issued by CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) which is valid until 2014 (it has 5-year validity).  So needless to say, my wife only lacks a petition for a working visa from an American employer that will enable her to claim her license from Ca-BON.  *opportunity, where are you?*

Going back to Canadian dream, the seminar we attended enlightened us to these facts on how an applicant qualifies for an immigrant visa as of present :

  • Education ———————————————maximum of 25 points
  • Ability to speak English and/or French———————-24 points
  • Experience—————————————————————21 points
  • Age————————————————————————10 points
  • (21-49; age over 49 lose 2 points for every year)
  • Arranged employment in Canada—————————-10 points
  • Adaptability (relatives, spouse in Canada)——————10 points
  • Total of 100 points and the current eligibility passing point is 67.

Since my wife and I are both in the health and education sectors, our professions and jobs qualify under the present Canadian list of 38 high demand occupations. But what limits us from furthering the lodgement of our application is the required PROOF OF FUNDS (or what’s common to many as “show money”).

PROOF OF FUNDS – ability to practically support him/herself and accompanying members of family on basic needs; amount of money to support your family is determined by size of your family.

Meaning the more children/dependents you have, the more moolahs you need to have in the bank.

Settlement money

  • # of family members                          funds required
  • Single——————————-CAD $ 11,000 (PhP 498, 870)
  • Single with dependent———–CAD $ 13, 801 (PhP 621, 045)
  • 3 ————————————CAD $ 16, 967 (PhP 763, 515)
  • 4————————————-CAD $ 20, 599 (PhP 926, 955)
  • 5————————————-CAD $ 23, 364 (PhP 1,051, 380)
  • 6————————————-CAD $ 26, 350 (PhP 1,185,750)
  • 7————————————-CAD $ 29, 337 (PhP 1,320,165)

PLUS consultancy fee of more or less PhP 90K, medical exam fee of PhP 4,000 per applicant, and a whopping CAD $ 2,1000 for the total application fee.

Do you have interest in migrating to Canada?

Do you have that fortune to apply for Canadian Immigrant Visa? (fees exclusive of job offers)

We don’t. :(

For readers who have been to Canada and who are living and/working in Canada, is it really that practical to splurge and invest on that huge amount of money in exchange of a better family life?

Alas, we continue to seek possibilities here and in other foreign countries.

So help us, God.

GABBY ASKED

“Daddy, gusto ko ng kalaro, kailan po ako magkakaroon ng kapatid ?”

When we’re blessed with Gabby almost 10 months after we got married (just so you know, he’s a honeymoon-baby),  I and Tina thought of having our second child after our first reaches the age of five.  Gabby is almost six in few months time and admittedly, we’re not ready yet to have his sibling/s.  There are a lot of things to do; we have a ton of hopes to accomplish and more importantly, we’re still enjoying Gabby.  God willing, if and when we welcome another addition to our family, we wanted to be more ready with everything if not, at least the basics. We wish to give the same attention, love and care to our future kid/s similar to what we’re providing Gabby.

I replied with a smile to our son and saw Tina smiling too. I told him he’ll have his little brother/s and/or little sister/s in God’s time.

We’re proud of our son. His innocent query implies he has healthy mind and body.

Now, it’s another story when he’d ask about the birds and the bees!

Like batteries, we have to be ever ready. :)

DAD & SON IN THE KITCHEN FOR MOM’S DAY

When my 5-year-old son, Gabby asked me a few days back of what to give to his mom, Tina, as our present for Mother’s Day, I never thought of any tangible things in box wrapped with ribbons but our

LOVE and TIME (read : precious and readily available!).

I certainly know my wife appreciates FOOD rather than receiving a bunch of colorful blooms and mushy greeting cards;  so there was no doubt that preparing a home-cooked dish for her by the two important men in her life (ehem, that’s me and Gabby) will definitely win her thumbs-up, hugs and kisses. :)

Gabby, who dreams of becoming a chef at his early age was so excited to do the part with me. You can just imagine how eager he was when we went to the grocery the first time without his mom, to buy the stuffs that we need.  Then when we hit the kitchen while his mom was away, he had his widest smile to assist me in cooking one of our family’s favorites with a twist.

The three of us have been keeping our love affair with tilapia. :D   It’s one of our must-buy food items in our almost weekly supermarket shopping.  So when I found out that Yummy magazine May 2010 issue has a tilapia-recipe that isn’t difficult to follow, I and Gabby knew that Tina will really appreciate it.

                                                       CRISPY TILAPIA TROPICALE

The ingredients -

For the pineapple sweet-sour sauce :

  • 1/2 cup crushed pineapple, syrup included
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon banana ketsup
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons julienned carrots
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons juliened red bell pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch, dissolved in 1 tablespoon water
  • 3 pieces tilapia (about 825 grams), filleted and sliced into strips
  • salt and pepper
  • oil for deep frying
  • leeks, sliced into strips for garnish

Procedure -

1. Make the pineapple sweet-sour sauce :

Combine crushed pineapple, water, sugar, banana ketchup, soy sauce, salt and vinegar. Bring to a boil then simmer for 5 to 6 minutes.  Add carrots and red bell pepper and cook until slightly soft, about 1 minute.  Add dissolved cornstarch and continue to cook until sauce is thick. Set aside.

2. Season tilapia strips with salt and pepper. Deep-fry a few pieces at a time until cripsy and golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

3. Arrange tilapia strips on a serving plate. Pour sauce on top and garnish with sliced leeks.

And voila….

I’m not usually in front of the stove but with this simple but delicous recipe, I wouldn’t mind cooking for my wife and kid on a daily basis!  I’ll just keep a Yummy Magazine beside me for no-fuss-tasteful dishes.

Gabby volunteered to combine and stir the ingredients for the pineapple sweet-sour sauce in a bowl and enjoyed coating the fish strips with cornstarch using our small stainless thongs.

I bonded with my kid while cooking this dish and made our weekend dinner extra special for Tina. And did she like it? Absolutely not! –She didn’t like it a bit but LOVE IT ENTIRELY, of course!  Without being biased, it was indeed one hearty meal.

According to Yummy magazine, this super-saver recipe serves 3 to 4 people; prep time : 5 minutes; cooking time 15 to 20 minutes;  Total cost PhP 111.50 / PhP 28 per serving; based on market prices as of press time.

Thank you, Yummy magazine for that easy-to-follow, delicious recipe!

Affordable. Quick and Easy-to-do. Family-friendly recipes. What more could you ask for? Go grab yourself a copy of Yummy Magazine and unleash the chef and the foodie in you! :D

ALL SMILES FOR GELATONE

Summer is truly upon us.  Heat is exhausting, is it not?  Even a flicker of a muscle will cause you to perspire because of the almost thirty-five-and up-degree-celsius everyday. And what a better way to beat the Summer heat is to enjoy a spoonful of your favorite cold treat!

Several days ago, my family and I found out that we’re one of the Gelatone’s 3rd Anniversary Photo Contest winners.  They’ve posted this picture at their facebook site with the sweetest photo caption…

And since its the weekend, we are announcing our 7th winner! The photo was taken during Gelatone’s Charity Event with AHON Foundation and Ateneo’s TOYH! Docgelo sent this photo of Tina and Gabby! Now this is a Mother-Son Team enjoying the Gelatone Experience! Truly, nothing beats FAMILY time @ Gelatone! Cheers! ~GELATONE

Winning Family Bonding Moment + Irresistably Delicious Gelato = Refreshing Summer!

If you’ve been following this blog, you probably know that GELATONE in Greenbelt 3 is one of our favorite food places long before we joined their photo contest.  This homey store has the warmest people behind those freshest and sublime Italian ice cream.  You know we always value good service + great tasting food.

And so after attending the afternoon Holy Mass at Greenbelt Chapel last Sunday, we visited Gelatone again  to claim and enjoy our prize….

Gabby chose PUFFO (Bubblegum), I had MELONE (Melon Sorbet), and Tina savored MASCARPONE (Cream Cheese with Caramelized Figs)! Sarap! :D

The friendly wait staff who attended to our table explained to me that sorbet doesn’t have milk unlike Gelato when I asked her the difference between the two.  I like them both! Sorbet cleanses one’s palate; perfect in between or after meals while Gelatone’s gelati, as I’ve mentioned, are just heavenly.

Did I already tell you that Gelatone also offers pasta and panini which are also a-must-try?

We sampled PANINO ALLA MILANESE; breaded chicken breast Milanese style with tomato. Yum! :)

Just before we finished all those tasteful merienda, Gelatone’s owner, Ms. Tess gave Gabby yellow and green balloons and suggested we try her freshly prepared Vanilla flavored gelato… It was divine!

Thank you so much to Gelatone and Happy 3rd Anniversary!

It was indeed a wonderful start of another great  Summer week!

MUCH ADO ABOUT SUMMER

I have a confession to make.

This may disappoint most of you but Tina and I are not fond of going to the beach during Summer. We prefer to soak under cold shower (together? that’s another story that does not deserve a blog post! LOL!)  rather than bathe and immerse on water under the scorching heat of Philippine Sun.

Other than budget consideration during peak season, we enjoy sand, water and what beauty that nature has to offer when it’s not thickly populated.  As you may know, my family’s recent beach adventure was last week of October 2009  when BORACAY was in its quiescence…

Tranquility echoed every morning during our days in the island…

Ah, Boracay! When do we get to enjoy your crystal turquoise water and powdery sand again ?  It’s not only the beach that’s glorious in this island but digestive feasts too. Summer heat reminds me of spoonful cold treats we had from Boracay’s HALOWICH.

And since we’re not hitting the beach anytime soon, you may now have a clue of how we define SUMMER in our own way…

Yesterday, Tina, Gabby and I went to Iceberg in their Timog Ave. branch to have bowls of Halo-Halo.

What’s a Summer in Manila without it?

For only PhP 98, I enjoyed macapuno balls, slice of peach, sweet plantain, corn kernels, corn flakes, jackfruit strips, ube jam, gulaman on shaved ice topped with ube and strawberry-flavored ice cream!

While Tina and Gabby chose to savor Caramel Flan with Mangoes and Vanilla Ice Cream. Yum! :)

Summer for us, is a great excuse to devour on these cold gastronomic pleasures.  :)

What’s your favorite food fit for Summer?

How are you spending your Summer?  I bet most of you are busy treading on most shores of this archipelago.

Have fun!  :D

TATAY-DOC SPEAKS

“A man’s worth is measured by how he parents his children. What he gives them, what he keeps away from them, the lessons he teaches and the lessons he allows them to learn on their own.” ~Lisa Rogers

I am a young parent.  My son is turning 6 this October; and a month prior to his birthday this year, I’ll be celebrating my 34th.  I know it’s not our ages or the number of children we have that defines a parent.  It’s the maturity that lies in accepting the responsibility of becoming one and  how he handles and goes through life with his kids.

In both troubled and happy times, I draw strength from the Lord, not for myself but for my son.  He and his mom are my utmost priorities.

                                                        THEY HAVE REDEFINED MY LIFE.

                                                              THEY’RE  MY  LIFE NOW.

I’d like to see my child grow as a whole-rounded individual who always keeps an open mind to understand that life isn’t purely fun and play but also filled with trials and tears.  I know it’s too early for Gabby to absorb all these but is there any rule or specific date for parents to inform kids about  these things ?

I and his mom always try to explain to him in simplest possible ways, those little facts of life. Like when we usually see beggars on streets; kids sleeping on gutters, some people who are ill, particularly of his age, we frequently tell him that he’s luckier more blessed because he’s healthy and free from any sickness; he has a home to shelter him, and so fortunate to be well-fed; with no early obligations except to enjoy schooling and his childhood.

Perhaps, it is clear to my son, that we may not have everything now, but at least we’re living life happily together with so much love and faith in God.

With the way things are, my wife and I are so grateful to the Lord for having  Gabby.  Not only because he is smart and excels in his studies and extra-curricular activities but he simply brings joy despite the hassles and challenges of our daily living.

I am aware that I have to continuously grow as a person for me to become a better parent; and every single day is such a wonderful learning experience! :)

TEAM GABBY WINS! (PART 1)

The past few days have been overwhelming! :D   My family and I cannot thank the Lord enough for so much blessings!

No, we didn’t win in lotto or something; how we wish! But it’s beyond what money can buy. :D

Last Thursday, I failed to attend to my son’s Math Quiz Bee in his preschool because I was on an appointment that turned out to be life-changing for me, career-wise; I’ll share it here soon.  For now, here’s the photo that Tina took during Gabby’s addition-subtraction contest.

Then Saturday came and off we went here…

We arrived in Ateneo past 11 AM and there we dressed up Gabby to look like a cute farmer…

With camisa de chino in celadon green that I bought for only PhP 50 in Divisoria (where else?),  his props of faux grains for another P50, his old yellow shirt that his mom wrapped around his head with a straw hat purchased at PhP 35 all bought in Tabora Street completed his look.

“PLANTING RICE”, his 5-stanza-poem was randomly given to him by their teacher several weeks ago.

Before they start the program, I took a photo of Gabby with MY CRUSH FOR HIM among his classmates. Her name is Chloe. :D   Isn’t she lovely? Bagay po ba sila ?  …No strings attached yet! It’s just me. :)

I told Tina while we’re waiting for Gabby’s turn to conquer the stage that I never experienced such palpitations and extreme nervousness since my Medical Board Exams. I was too anxious that I wanted our son to do it well and be done with ease.

And after 50 Kindergarten students from 2 sections have recited their pieces, Gabby bagged 4th place which gave him the trophy and made him a winner in 2 consecutive years.

When he was in Nursery last year, he was named 3rd placer on the same contest. You may view it HERE.

“This Declamation Contest is not intended to exhibit the proficiency of the child, but to give him/her experience in speaking before an audience. Nervousness is thus eradicated, confidence gained and stage presence developed.” -TTA.

We’re having PPS (Proud Parent Syndrome) again.  He just recently ranked Top 2 in his class for their 3rd quarterly grading, then he won a trophy for his declamation and a medal for his Math Quiz Bee.  The boy deserves a prize he wanted.  But it will be granted to him in due time as we’ve agreed. :)

Here are Gabby’s mentors in school (left) and his greatest teacher at home (right)…

(applause, applause!)

TINA and I  always feel like a WINNER for having a son like him.

We’re just so proud of loving him.

We always thank God for giving Gabby to us.

God is great! :D   His love is overflowing.

————————————

PS : We had an early dinner somewhere… That’s on my next post.  Till then.

Have a great week everyone! :D God bless.

IN A WORLD OF RESTLESS AND YOUNG

In a month or so, Gabby will be done with his classes.  And 6 years after we became first-time parents, Tina and I still cannot believe that our little boy has done Nursery and about to finish Kindergarten soon.  I guess all parents out there would agree that it’s a BIG accomplishment already; although we know there’s a looooooooooong way to go for the 3 of us. At least we’ve started the first few steps happily together. :D

Preschoolers nowadays study lessons that my generation had learned later in grade school.  We take it as an advantage for them of course.  But let me ask you, when did you learn your proper and improper fractions and how to add and subtract them ? What about mixed fractions -the ones with whole number and a fraction ?  Synonyms and antonyms ? Concepts of Greater than and Less than ?  Differences of Solid, Liquid and Gas ?  Were they taught to you as early as Kindergarten ? *grin*

It’s not only the preschool syllabus that evolved and became, IMO, far advanced (–again, I’m not complaining) but also the extra-curricular activities.

Last week, we heard our son singing screaming :

“Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams,  for my love….will see you..through…”

My wife and I looked at each other with astonishment! Where in the world did Gabby learn a very old OPM song?  :D   I, myself haven’t heard of it in years!

Tina and I are children of the 80s.  And at 33, I can still recall our preschool activities and whatnot but  I do not remember singing these songs in school when I was Gabby’s age :

My Love Will See You Through  by Marco Sison

Thank You For The Music   by Abba

Somewhere Out There  by James Ingram + Linda Ronstadt  (I remember this from a late 80s movie)

Yesterdays Dream  by Donna Cruz

Actually, it was nice and fun to hear and see a 5-year-old kid singing somewhat-matured songs! :D   He even picks up his Jumbo pencil and assumes it as his microphone while singing at the top of his voice.

Tina and I are just proud parents and are so glad to be in a world of restless and young! :D

I wonder what’s on for their next week’s classes… hmmm… *excited*

Meanwhile, here’s what Gabby was singing when I’m writing this…

We are the world of the restless and young
And we need a hand to guide us
Helping each other, build each other
As long as we’re together you and me

For together we stand, divided we fall
Together we climb to the top of the world
We can be what we want for the world to see
That we are the children of yesterday’s dream

————————————————–

:D   Can you recall your preschool days ?

:D   What are your fondest memories of those years ?

:D    What songs were you singing then ?

GABBY’S V-DAY 2010

Dear Gabby,

Although I immensely enjoyed my Sunday morning and afternoon with my co-bloggers in Binondo (which I will narrate to you here soon),  still nothing beats  spending Valentine’s with you and your mom, naks! :D

Your mom and I are so glad with your choice of movie; how many of your age would have interest in Zeus, Poseidon, Athena and the rest of Mount Olympus? :) I myself have almost forgotten my Greek Mythology and haven’t found it more fascinating than this.

It was fantastic! My  Our kind of movie–no heavy stuffs,  just plain fun.  You know how your mom and I are both kid-at-hearts. :D   The story line about Gods, Goddesses and Demigods didn’t bore me from beginning to end. It actually drew me to the scenes that I almost forgot my biggest problem to date; it’s so effectively entertaining! (at least for us, LOL).  How can you go wrong with the director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone?  To cut it short, it was amazing watching the film with you and Tina as usual. Sarap ulitin sa Gateway Mall dibidi (joke!). :D

I know your mom will less appreciate it (than dining) but I still insisted  managed to buy her official Valentine veggies from Rustan’s.

If Percy Jackson was magical, our dinner was a champion! :D

We skipped starters and immediately ordered one of our family’s favorite pizzas…

It has been a while since we last tried this. You know it’s one of our comfort foods! :D

salmon + caviar on pizza =  Yum!

PIZZA CAVIALE SALMONE, P365+.

When you told us you’d liked to have a glass of iced tea, we never thought twice in ordering this for you…

TE PESCA, P98+  Peach flavored Iced Tea, refreshingly good!

And since your mom wanted to try other pasta and pass on our usual order of Rigatoni All Alfonso, how did you like this ?

Don’t you just like those bow tie or butterfly- shaped pasta called farfalle ?  ’twas your first time to try it, right?

Cibo really knows how to pamper our eyes and palates so well…

FARFALLE ALLA VENEZIANA, LA FAMIGLIA, PhP 455+. Sauteed bits of seafoods in cream + parsley + butterfly pasta

Your choice of dessert was also commendable!  Even if at first you’re torn between Mango Panna Cotta and a Chocolate slice; but we ended up having another old time favorite…

TIRAMISU.   It was nice you enjoyed it sharing with me and your mom. :D

With Cibo’s absolutely delicious food, nice and edgy ambiance, almost flawless service  and watching that adventure-fantasy movie, we really had another fun start of the week.

Thanks, anak for making our Valentine’s this year memorable and complete. :D

We love you.

-Daddy Gelo (formerly Tatay-doc)

PS : BTW Gabby, who’s your crush in school ? *grin*

———————————————————

:D   How was your V-day? Did you celebrate Valentine’s Day or Single Awareness Day ? Is the acronym for that, SAD?  *peace*

A PLEASANT SURPRISE

His mom went to her morning shift in the Operating Room today with her Nursing students and will be out by 2PM.  I was left to accompany our son, Gabby to his preschool to attend to a brief parent-teacher-meeting and claim his report card.  And to my surprise, their teacher’s aide greeted us at the school’s gate, “Congratulations poTop 2 si Gabby!”  :D

Wow! Even it was so anticlimactic, certainly I cannot complain. It was ecstatic to hear those words so early in the morning! :)

Gabby and I sat in his room with other parents and kids. We shortly waited for our turn and when it came, the teacher prepared and handed me this…

Sweet! :D   It was only last November when Gabby made it to SIXTH PLACE ON SECOND QUARTER  out of 30 Kindergarten students in his class and now he sky rocketed to SECOND HONORS!  I cannot help but to have PPS (read: Proud Parent Syndrome) again. :)

I heard from his teacher while talking to other parents that the basic problem of the previous members of the honors list (excluding Gabby) was failure to follow exam directions. It really pays to follow rules.  When it’s asked to encircle, you never underline.

Inspite of difficult and advanced preschool curriculum, Tina and I are proud that Gabby is picking up something from his 4-hour-a-day-schooling.  I will make a post of what kids of his generation study in school soon.

The teacher commented that Gabby was the only one in the class who knew one particular VERB (remember your action words?) and its SYNONYM.

Teacher :  “Daddy, si Gabby lang po ang may alam ng synonym ng HUNGRY!  What’s your answer Gabby?”

My son :  “STARVING!”

Daddy Gelo :  (note to self :  You’re son’s  really a foodie at a young age!) :D

CHUBBY CHEEKS

Now that Gabby is turning 6 years old in 9 months time, I and Tina miss his old self.  Yes, he’s still that lovable and smart kid but the way he looks now seems like he’s BABY-NO-MORE!

Yesterday, I was browsing our family photos in my files and I found these…

taken at tagaytay highlands when he's 3.

We miss his chubby   taba-chingching cheeks !
We love him so much and he’ll be our BABY-FOREVER! :D

10 YEARS MORE TO A CENTURY

:) FAMILY + FEAST + FUN = Sundays never get better than this!

Yesterday, January 24, just before the clock strikes 12 noon, my wife, Tina with our son Gabby and I were already at the venue to attend my paternal Lola Tentay’s 90th birthday celebration with almost all of our relatives from my dad’s side.

Yes, there was the queen of the Pinoy feasts ~ lechon (roasted pork), courtesy of my cousin, Dr. CSM from New Jersey and a simple lunch buffet to everyone’s delight.  Check out my glutton’s plate, lol :D   (click photos to drool more  enlarge)

My dad got the lechon plate for us to share :D   Nevermind the cholesterol content; a reunion like this doesn’t happen on a daily basis!

Our Tita/Ninang Glo with her husband, Tito George who both came home from LA, Ca sponsored and provided us color-coded T-shirts with embroidered logo for the occasion. Yellow for all apo (grandchildren) and mga apo sa tuhod (great-grandchildren) and red shirts for all of Inang Tentay’s children.  The venue :  Calumpang Gymnasium in Marikina City.

Who would have thought that this gym was deluged few months ago by the unforgettable Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana)?  The Calumpang gymnasium is located literally along the Marikina River…

The simple spread was provided by a relative-caterer, Martha’s Plate.  The feast was unpretentious; nothing fancy but deliciously satisfying! :D

There were Chicken-Shrimp Sotanghon, Fresh Lumpia, Fish Fillet, Chicken Pastel, Beef Morcon, and of course, a cake!  Everyone had Buco-Pandan for dessert (which I forgot to capture).

After lunch, our balikbayan-uncle hosted the program with more than greetings and well wishes for our Lola but fun parlor games too! There were games for everyone!  Even the guests participated and all had nothing but cheers and widest smiles!  BTW, Gabby had his share on stage with his 5-stanza poem that garnered applause. Tina and I are so proud of him! :D

The reunion-birthday party could have been happier if all our love ones abroad could come home especially my mom in UAE; and our relatives whom we visited in NZ before but now all living more comfortably in Melbourne.  Nevertheless, it was indeed another family gathering to remember.

We all went home with similar wishes for our good Lord to bless our Lola Tentay with more years to be with us.

:) Aren’t you proud as a Filipino that we value family and family-ties?

Till our next family-bonding moments!

OH MY GULAY!

these were a part of this dozen bunch…

They may not be Ecuadorian roses but my OAO (read : One And Only) loved it when Gabby and I gave them to her this afternoon.  :D

My wife, Tina fondly calls flowers, which she didn’t personally like in the past until she matured, GULAY… (or for us Pinoys, veggies)  :D

While Tina was about to be off from her 6-to-2 shift, I texted her that Gabby and I got her something for our 6th wedding anniversary despite the frugality that we’re practicing as of present, she replied in a heart beat, “Alam ko na yan!”  (“I already know that!”)… So the moment she spotted me and Gabby with those red blooms at Timezone in Gateway Mall where we killed time with arcade games, she was no longer surprised. Nevertheless, my son and I were already content seeing Tina smiling :D

Tina :  “Saan mo binili ‘to?”  (“Where did you buy this?)

Gelo :  “Farmers. Pinagawa pa namin ni Gabby ‘yan!”  (I sourced the GULAY from Farmers Market in Cubao after I’ve picked a fresh dozen and had them arranged in a bouquet.  It was another rare time that I gave flowers which were never bought from Dangwa, Manila.  I commonly buy flowers for most occasions in Dangwa except for a few times when I bought Tina’s from Holland Tulips in malls.  Perhaps, I considered the traffic in Manila because of the upcoming Quiapo Fiesta tomorrow or some other petty reason).

Tina : “Magkano ?”  (“How much?”)

Gelo : “One Three!”

Tina in higher pitch and higher eyebrows :  “One Three???!!!”

Gelo : “No, Three hundred lang,… hehehe..”

Where did we go after our Gateway Mall meet-up to have something to munch?

on my next post! :D

Foreword : NOTHING EXTRAVAGANT; ONLY SPECIAL MOMENTS, naks! :D

Happy 6th Anniversary, ‘ney!  I love you and Gabby :)

WANTED : A HAPPIER TWENTY TEN

WARNING : This can be depressing. :(

I grew up spending Media Noche or New Year’s Eve dinner with my entire family.  Whatever is on the spread, there’s always a basket of 13 round fruits to symbolize high hopes for prosperity for each month of the New Year and beyond.  This year, we had grapefruit, pineapple, lemon, grapes, chico, kiat-kiat, pomelo, golden honeydew (which I haven’t tasted yet!), cantaloupe, red apple, orange, guava, and a pear.  Do you also practice the same Pinoy tradition?  What did you share with your families and/or friends on your feast?   How was your own New Year’s Eve celebration ?  Did you have fireworks and firecrackers ?

In as much as I’d like to be 100% happy, optimistic and all, I had mixed emotions welcoming 2010.  It was so different and incomparable from two Christmases and New Year’s Eves I spent on duty in a public hospital years ago.
This was the very first holiday that my mom is abroad for work and there are so many issues we have to resolved.  It was also the first New Year that my wife, Tina with our son, Gabby and I had spent New Year’s Eve with my dad-in-law;  the big deal with it was the reason of his unexpected and unplanned sudden vacation here from California – it was to attend his brother’s wake and funeral.
Tina’s uncle died four days before Christmas because of the  big C  which was lately diagnosed last October 2008.   I remember him when he went to our place to ask for a narcotic prescription for his severe headache.  I never submitted to his request and adviced him to have a thorough physical exam with lab work ups and true enough, the cause of his complaint wasn’t the usual hypertension or stress but a malignant mass in his nasopharyngeal area with rare presentation.
On the last week of October, he underwent biopsies more than once that led to anemia and few blood transfusion due to hemorrhage incurred post-procedures; CAT-SCANs and other diagnostics several times; had been requested to undergo radiation therapy but was already late when he developed pneumonia.  When he was discharged with nasogastric tube (a feeding tube where drugs can also be administered; inserted in the nose all the way down to stomach), I and Tina had helped his sons in re-inserting the tube and tried to assist them in little way we can.
And because they’ve waited for two of Tina’s cousins who came home from US and so her stepdad (my in-law), they have to schedule the interment 2 days before the whole world welcomes 2010.  How can you enjoy it cheerfully while celebrating someone else’s life ?
The entire grieving family attended a mass in Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina after a sumptuous catered buffet where we had molo soup, chicken cordon bleu, fried fish fillet with honey mustard dip, beef in mushroom gravy, buttered veggies and those delicious cupcakes, eclair, and cream puff for dessert.  Free flowing brewed coffee kept us awake during the wake.  There were also juices in tetra packs and Milo for Gabby and other kids.
The homily of the priest (he called himself member of PNP –pari nagmimisa sa patay) was so remarkable that it lightened our spirits and emotions that evening.  He shared his own experiences when he lost his parents. He remembered what his father told them — that he wasn’t dying but was ready to ’go abroad’.   If that’s the case, then cemeteries are our ’pre-departure areas’ and all of us, with no exception (unless you’re immortal or one of the X-Men) will be traveling soon to our Lord’s Kingdom one after the other.
Last year was tragic for most Pinoy families particularly those who experienced the wrath of typhoons. But TODAY’s a new day.  Everyone should move on.  Like you, I have no choice but to keep positivity in my pocket and simply look forward and continue to dream BIG today and so on and so forth… :D
A Happy New Year to all.

Feliz Año Nuevo a todos.

Feliç Any Nou a tots.

OUR LOLA & OUR KIDS

Last Friday, Tina, Gabby and I heard mass with my brother, JC at Christ the King Church in E.Rodriguez Avenue in Quezon City. Then in time for lunch, we met up with my other brother, who’s a private pilot, with his family at our paternal grandmother’s place in Calumpang, Marikina City. It has been a tradition in our family, perhaps like yours, to visit relatives whenever possible or, at least every Christmas.

Who would have thought that this old ancestral home was never spared by typhoon Ondoy’s wrath?   The flood in that living room was chest-deep last September; the mud was unbearable.  Luckily, it’s a 2-storey house that saved the lives of our Lola and our relatives during those times.

Like my aunt’s place in Pasig City and many others affected by that unforgettable natural disaster that hit Manila and most of Luzon, my Lola Tentay’s house, which was built of love of 12 children, 30+ apos and ‘apo sa tuhod’  was also made ready for the holidays despite what it went through.

We’re glad to see Lola Tentay, who can still finish a plate of rice and viand for lunch and to find her having a good appetite for a hamburger bun for snack was really awesome! Although she’s now forgetful like other geriatrics, she can manage to smile and perhaps recall our names when we remind her.

Tina took her pulse and BP and turned out fine for her age. Our entire clan here and across the globe are still happy to have her. Most of them from LA, and New Jersey in the US and Melbourne in Australia will come home next month as we celebrate our Lola’s 90th birthday. :D

Look how her great-great grandchildren smiled for the cam upon seeing her on Christmas.  They’re not even a quarter of the total number of all her ‘apo sa tuhod’!

Those are my niece KC, nephew Joshua and our son, Gabby. :D

How did you spend your Christmas day this year?

Did you visit any of your relatives too ?

Aren’t you proud that we Pinoys keep our families in close-knit ?

OUR LITTLE ACHIEVER

IMG_3227

For the past few weeks since school started this year, our 4-year-old son Gabby has been consistently performing well in his kindergarten class. Proof to this are those stamp-pad-marks of “excellent”, “well-done”, “good work”; sometimes he brings home papers marked with ”fast worker”.  I’m sorry but you cannot fully relate to my joy whenever he comes home after his 8AM-11AM class with these remarks unless you’re a parent too.  “Tanggal ang pagod ko sa trabaho sa maghapon kung ganito ang salubong ng anak ko.”   These mushy petty things for some, commonly serve as an inspiration to parents like me to do more and aspire more for the good of our kid/s.

IMG_3225

We’re so blessed to have him as our son. He’s not only smart and fast-learner but he’s kind-hearted too. I know all kids are angels but my wife and I are just glad to have Gabby as our own.

At such an early age, he already showed talent in declamation when he won 3rd place over fifty-one Nursery students from their preschool last February with his 2-stanza-winning piece, ”For My Country.”  Click this to review the post about it with title—–>ONE PROUD DADDY  and I really am until now, and probably until I breathe my last.  I guess it’s innate with us parents to always LOVE their child/ren UNCONDITIONALLY.

Tina and I understand that as young parents, we have lots of things to learn and we’re so ready to absorb what needs to be imbibed. Isn’t it that living is always a long learning process?  As for now, what we pray for is to continue raising Gabby as God-fearing individual, healthy and happy kid.

We love Gabby so much not only because he’s an obedient and intelligent kid, but simply because we are a dear part of him.

Whether his name will be included in the quarterly list of topnotchers of their class or not, in my heart, he’ll forever be my number one! :D

LOVING U IS LIKE FOOD 2 MY SOUL

PBA093n4n53r

It’s that time of the year again that we honor MOMS.  And admittedly, I haven’t been a good son to my own, I do have my shortcomings, but nevertheless, I am and will be forever grateful to her and will continue to try my very best to live up to her expectations.  Ofcourse, all moms know best.  I digress -  with regards to the mother of  my only son, a.k.a.  my one and only wife, lol, this one’s for you.

I hope she reads this (because she has interests other than the blogosphere).

Let me show you the proofs of  the TWO BEST GIFTS  my wife has given me to date :

Apparently, my lovely wife  gave me two important gifts so far, her “I DO” when we got married and ofcourse, when she had our son for 39 weeks and a day in her uterus.  And as you know, her being my son’s mom doesn’t stop there, for being a mother is a life-long job that she and any other moms are committed  24/7, forever and ever, amen!

To my wife, Cristina, I thank you  for these reasons :

for mothering our four-year-old son Gabby, setting a good example to him as a God-fearing person.

for enjoying the life of a parent with me while raising Gabby.

for having a mind of her own. She may not know this but I’m so proud of her for being who she is, and her simple accomplishments as an Operating Room nurse, as a silent educator producing globally competitive Pinoy nurses.  As she already completed her requirement as a US-RN, we’re just presently praying for VISA-blessings!

for being my BFF  best friend for life, my partner through thick and thin literally and figuratively.

for dreaming the same dreams with me.  we both hope to work abroad, earn and save more and travel the globe!

for sharing good laughs and few cries.

for bearing with my erratic mood swings (she and few of my friends and family are the only people who know how to tolerate me).

for  being my personal nurse in sickness and in health.

for entrusting me our domestic budget and for allowing me to handle our finances (yes folks, it’s uncommon I know, but she prefers it that way and i love it, lol).

for being my best critic at all times.

for understanding that I, too, am not perfect and neither omnipotent.  I may have so many flaws as a son,  as the eldest sibling to my 3 brothers, as a husband to her, but the good Lord knows that I am trying to be the best dad and provider to our son Gabby.

for being with me during good times and bad.

for accepting my apologies everytime we have lovers’ quarrel  LQs.

I just want you to know that you’re so blessed to have me as your hubby am so blessed to have you as my wife! Happy Moms’ Day! I and GABBY LOVE YOU SO MUCH  ‘NEY!

To all moms reading this post, and frequenting this blog, THANK YOU and CARRY ON!

Cheers to you!  I just wish I can sing this to you, but I can’t, lol.

You taught me everything
And everything youve given me
I always keep it inside
Youre the driving force in my life, yeah
There isnt anything
Or anyone I can be
And it just wouldnt feel right
If I didnt have you by my side
You were there for me to love and care for me
When skies were grey
Whenever I was down
You were always there to comfort me
And no one else can be what you have been to me
Youll always be you always will be the girl
In my life for all times

Chorus:
Mama, mama you know I love you
Oh you know I love you
Mama, mama youre the queen of my heart
Your love is like
Tears from the stars
Mama, I just want you to know
Lovin you is like food to my soul
Youre always down for me
Have always been around for me even when I was bad
You showed me right from my wrong
Yes you did
And you took up for me
When everyone was downin me
You always did understand
You gave me strength to go on
There was so many times
Looking back when I was so afraid
And then you come to me
And say to me I can face anything
And no one else can do
What you have done for me
Youll always be
You will always be the girl in my life
