PINOY EXPAT MISSING HIS FAVORITE SNACKS

For almost 2 years of being an Overseas Filipino Worker here in Malaysia, I have been grateful to have been exposed to a gastronomic diversity available here in Penang and to a few states that we’ve been to. However, my native tongue remains to be Filipino thus apparently, it craves for Filipino dishes every  now and then. And unlike other countries where Filipino restaurants, stores and even groceries spring like mushrooms, we rarely have those here in Penang. :(  So Tina, my mom and I always make an effort to go to the public market here (read : I do the marketing almost every weekend), prepare, cook so we could eat Filipino dishes we love right from the little kitchen of our humble abode here in Butterworth. Despite we’re thankful to have the means to do so, nothing replaces the unique feeling of dining what you love in the comforts of your own home.

And while browsing my files, I found the following photos that made my craving even worse. Can you blame me? See for yourself. ;)

Halo-Halo!!! This one’s from Mang Inasal, but I also love Razon’s version too.

Dulcinea’s Churros Con Chocolate : Not actually Filipino but one of those that surely completes an afternoon snack or merienda!

Taro Taro and Taro Ice from Quickly. With the advent of a huge variety of milk tea, Tina and I still love Quickly! Gabby likes it too of course! I’m not sure if a kiosk of Quickly exists somewhere here in Penang. Too lazy to google.

This should have been Puto’t Dinuguan but Mang Inasal’s upgraded version has it as Toasted Pandesal and Dinuguan. Sarap! Sedap! :D

Jollibee’s Spaghetti and Palabok Fiesta! Need I say more? ;)

This was from Via Mare in Greenbelt Mall, Makati; but any ordinary suman and mangga is always a winner tandem for me!

Junkies, yeah! :P

Starbucks Coffee branches are available in most states of Malaysia including Penang. But call me biased, Caramel Macchiato and Banoffee Pie taste more delicious in Pinas. #homesicknesskicksin! :D

One of foodcourt favorite combo back home : World Chicken! My default choice is usually a plate of Pasta in Pesto sauce, Potato Salad and of course, Grilled Chicken Fillet with Ranch sauce! Sarap! Sedap! :)

Bibingka with lotsa butter, sugar & coconut shavings! Whether bibingka-tinda-sa-kanto- or that-little-high-end-Via Mare, a bibingka is always a bibingka! hahaha! #lostforsuperlatives!

And a lot more to mention! :D   Do we have the same cravings?

LOVE IN A BOX

20 June 2010 –I left the house 20 minutes before 6 in the morning when my wife and kid were still curling up in bed. I can’t blame them; everyone deserves longer hours of sleep on a weekend.  But I had to leave even with an empty stomach because I gave my nod to a commitment to do clinics from 6AM to 10AM for a pharmaceutical company somewhere near our place. So even if it’s Father’s Day 2010, I didn’t pass on the chance to work even on a beautiful and sunny Sunday morning; after all, providing for family regardless of the value is one of the reasons for the occasion.

After that short but productive stint, I went to TriNoma mall to buy food for our lunch. I bought ingredients for pasta for Tina to cook.  I also bought a cake that Gabby and I have been meaning to try.

Because my almost 6-year-old son is still too young to give me presents except for his priceless hugs and kisses, I took the effort of bringing home what we would enjoy together…

We like Blizzard from Dairy Queen. Gabby likes Oreo, while both Tina and I like Chocolate Extreme served upside-down! :)   Ice cream never fails to delight us and having it as a cake is a huge plus!  We’re all excited when I came home yesterday with the box of DQ Cherry Chocolate Ice Cream Cake! Sarap! :D

“Not your traditional cake. Made with thick and creamy DQ soft serve ice cream and layered with fudge, cookie crunch & chocolate and vanilla ice cream.”

Each slice was heavenly! Our sweet craving was absolutely satisfied.

I rememeber during my wonder years, my parents used to bring us 4 boys to a famous ice cream house along Aurora Blvd Extension in Quezon City to savor their cold treats and take home a box of ice cream cake. Sadly, this place that I’m sure, became a part of many Filipino childhood memories closed several years ago and we never had ice cream cakes since then.

Before dunking our forks to that wonderful dessert, Tina cooked pasta with two sauces to choose from- pesto and carbonara.

So while most families celebrated Daddy’s Day by dining out, we’re at the comforts of our own table, enjoying home-cooked meals and an ice cream cake that’s to-die-for! :)

To my own Daddy and fathers-in-law and to all dads out there, Mabuhay po, tayong mga tatay!

It’s always a great pleasure to be appreciated for all of our efforts.

How did you spend this year’s Father’s Day?

FAST FRESH ITALIAN

I don’t know about you, but my family and I give our thumbs up to one of our favorites : FAZOLI’s in Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City.  Since the day it opened in the Philippines more than a decade ago, we have been frequenting  this fastfood for their combo meals, mostly pastas and chicken and their eat-all-you-want soft garlic BREAD STICKS :D   Our 5-year-old son, Gabby can eat more than 3 of these bread sticks in one sitting!

Yes, there’s nothing special about their beverage line of  usual sodas, orange juice (which I usually have) and (the not-so-good) iced tea but they also come in drink-all-you-can for only PhP 50+ and diners are free to self-serve to their hearts content!

Italian food has never been this affordable!  A true value for money; good-tasting too!  And did I say the ambiance isn’t that bad? There’s a mini-bridge between a koi pond at its facade.   The pay-as-you-order counters are manned  by friendly staff.  The wrought iron and tiled stairs will take you to its second floor which has a walkway connecting the dining areas.  Lighting is subdued; entire place is apt for family dining and chit chat with friends although it can also get packed especially on pay days. Fazoli’s is just a best alternative to noisy fastfoods.

After we heard mass at St. Pio Chapel near Eastwood City (view earlier post below), on a Sunday afternoon following 2 typhoons that badly hit the Metro and the Northern parts of the country; not to forget it’s a day before our son turns 5 years old; I became excited again to eat at Fazoli’s; thanks to my wife’s suggestion.

Where else can you find a delicious combo meal of PESTO and 2-PIECE-ITALIAN CHICKEN for only PhP 165+?

The pasta was just right for me, not too moist, not too dry.  I LIKE PESTO so much and Fazoli’s version is one of my favorites for its simplicity and for being budget-friendly.  The Italian chicken also doesn’t disappoint.  One can easily appreciate the herbs and flavor well infused to its bones.

My wife, Tina and Gabby shared this plate…

IMG_4079BAKED ZITI, PhP 150+.  Simply flavorful. I always like melted cheese on tomato sauce.  Our son even dipped his bread sticks on this serving.

Then the three of us also shared…

IMG_4085PEPERRONI STROMBOLI, PhP 110+  It comes with a dip of stewed tomatoes and herbs.

So much for our late Sunday lunch!

Fazoli’s also serve other pastas, salads, submarino sandwiches, pizza of course, minestone soup, Italian rice.

Fazoli’s is located at Eastwood City Cyberpark, E. Rodriguez Jr. Ave., Bagumbayan, Libis, Quezon City, Metro Manila and also available across America, check  HERE.
