CELEBRATING FATHERHOOD

Some of the most worthwhile endeavors in life aren’t easy. Whoever said,  “Any man can be a father but it takes a ton of efforts to be a Dad”  really understood what fatherhood is all about.  As Gabby’s Big Daddy for almost 8 years now, each day is a happy one. In fact, life could never be better; however a constant challenge too.  It’s not simple to offer quality time and devote your entire life with unconditional love to your kid. To someone who would claim otherwise, I am definite he/she has not yet experienced being one, therefore has no right to make accusations or pass judgment. Waking up every morning to go to work to provide for the family is beyond purposeful. It actually transcends manhood.  Being there when your son asks you to be with him, thinking of his condition when he’s sick and you’re at work, listening to every intuitive queries a growing boy has, playing with him when there’s something more to do are very far from being uncomplicated. Things that come with being a parent can certainly take a lot of time to accomplish, even longer time to get things right. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think there’s no school that teaches Perfect Parenthood 101, right? You eventually learn it as you become one. Life is somehow fulfilled no matter how imperfect, if you have your own child. No amount of money, recognition or success however you quantify it, can surpass the joys of raising a kid; every minute is a bliss! :)

And my nose is getting taller each day seeing Gabby grow and spending moments with him is nothing but priceless!

On the other hand, it may not be apparent because we’re not that expressive, I am grateful to my own Daddy. He worked as a (Safeway) Supermarket Manager for nearly 2 decades in most countries in the Middle East (while my mom was working back home as an Accountant/Comptroller) and  of course,  he’s a big part of whatever we (me & my 3 brothers) have become. Despite his own imperfections as a father to us or at least to me, regardless of whatever we’ve been through as a family, no matter how faulty he is, he remains to be our one and only Daddy. And I remain thankful.

On a lighter note,  I snatched this family photo from my paternal clan’s facebook account; the picture was taken some time in the 1960s with my entire paternal family. My Daddy Benruh (reverse nickname of Ruben) seated immediately beside my late grandfather, was noted to be a “pasaway” (insert English translation here) even as early as those days (until now, right Daddy? hehehehe!). Proof to that, according to the comment on this photo by my 3rd brother posted on fb, was the wound on his knee. Although to be honest, I never took any measures to ask him of the cause of that wound he had on this photo, it might be from a pure accident, who knew. ;)

My late paternal grandfather (seated beside my aunt, and my lola or his wife next to my aunt), apparently raised all of his children well (Can you count them all in photo?) and my daddy (and mommy) has reared 4 boys and here I am, I only have one (for now);  I can’t help but imagine how more complex fatherhood was for my lolo and my dad.

Fatherhood, obviously like motherhood to women, is a lifelong commitment. I highly consider it as my greatest blessing! :) It is my pleasure until my last breath and my life’s biggest achievement to be Gabby’s Big Daddy! :P

ANOTHER WEEKEND IN PULAU PINANG

I’m sure you have already experienced a weekend made extra-special by unexpected little happy moments. My family and I spent another Saturday that’s totally different from the ones we already had here in Penang. It was a delicious, action-packed, gripping and charming weekend we all enjoyed.

28 April 2012, Saturday.  I was fully motivated to wake up early (despite the fact that I am such a morning person even on weekends!) because we planned to watch the Marvel-comic-superhero-movie that’s everyone was raving about. The Avengers!  After I’ve read countless superlatives to describe that film on facebook and twitter, and even heard 2 Filipino hilarious-radio DJs via online live streaming of their program from the Philippines, talking of wrong spoilers about it, I personally built an excitement to watch The Avengers with Tina, Gabby and my mom on a wide screen.

So we left our place again in Butterworth, traveled the road via Rapid Penang bus, crossed the bay and reached George Town via ferry (where Gabby met a bunch of my Bridging Course-Ireland-PreMed students en route to see the same movie too!) and rode another bus to Komtar. *whew!* :)

Why, hello there again, George Town! It’s weekend once more!

As Penang Rapid Bus commuters, my family and I have been accustomed to these road signs in Komtar Tower. The sight is an almost weekly breather from our usual daily routine.

We arrived in First Avenue Mall around eleven in the morning with almost nothing in the tummies. We only drank coffee and hot Milo for Gabby before we left home.

Then just at the entrance of First Avenue Mall, our almost growling stomachs were satisfied in a heart beat by one word –BRUNCH! :)

With his Lola (my mom) during our brunch before the movie.

Of course, Gabby must have a photo with my lovely wife. ;)

kulitan! (*insert english translation here*) :P

I thought that the last time I had a bite from Subway was ages ago when I was on a date with Tina who was my, ehem, girlfriend then in Powerplant Mall cinema in Rockwell, Makati City. Or was it the only remarkable Subway experience I can recall? I digress. Anyway, important thing is, Subway opened an additional branch in Penang in this First Avenue Mall and our hunger was remedied.

My mom had her default choice for sandwiches -what else but Tuna, Gabby selected his own, while Tina and I had the same option to have 6-inch-Roast-Beef each.

We had two orders of 6-inch-Roast Beef sandwich; one for me, the other one for Tina. She had Parmesan bread while I chose Honey-something-bread. But we both agreed to have everything with Roast Beef except two things –black olives and jalapenos.

My 6-inch-Roast-Beef-sandwich came with 2 options -either potato chips or 2 cookies. Apparently, I had the cookies and loved these double chocolate and white chocolate macadamia cookies. Sarap!!! Sedap! My family ordered more for takeaway. :)

Mas Mura Sine Dito Sa Penang!

If you must know, movie admission rates in this Malaysian state (I don’t know with the others) are cheaper than in the Philippines. I only paid 43 ringgit (PhP 14= 1 rinngit, USD 0.32 = 1 ringgit) for the four of us; that’s RM12 per adult x 3 (Tina, Mommy and I), plus only RM7 for Gabby. You don’t pay almost half the price for a 7-year-old-movie-goer like Gabby back home but in full adult price as well. And according to Mamy who lived and worked in UAE and Qatar in the past few years, movie tickets there are more expensive compared to rates here in Penang. That’s another simple reason why we should be grateful in this side of Malaysia. :)

The Avengers movie was incredibly awesome! The super hero characters were expectedly intersting but gripping action scenes, sophisticated computer graphics and hilarious storylines made it more amazing! What an unforgettable movie! We wish a sequel would be filmed soon.

I liked all the characters but that of Hulk and Iron Man were hilariously funny!  Have you watched The Avengers? I’m definite you’ve enjoyed it too! If you have not, c’mmon, give yourself a fun treat! :)

And look who we saw at the first level of First Avenue Mall few minutes after we exited the cinema…

This little boy was too cute for words, he made me feel envious that Gabby should have worn such fantastic costume too. See his smile? I’m sure even the monstrous Loki’s army will easily melt by this boy’s charm!

Who would have thought that the characters would come alive immediately after you watched them on the big screen?  What an amazing surprise! A cool unexpected treat to me. :)

People of the world, here’s a proof that Malaysians know how to do it too! Here’s Thor and Loki -Malaysian versions!

The Marvel Superheroes came in full force! How fierce! In characters! hahaha!

My mom and his uber-gwapito grandson had that photo-op with Storm and Captain America. Then Gabby became a bit moody; perhaps he was shy too be photographed with the company of Marvel Superheroes. Well his father was otherwise! hehehehe (view next photo…)

I don’t know about you but to me, the chance of being in the company of Marvel Superheroes does not come on a daily basis, does it? Wait, where’s Hawkeye? Had I know that Jeremy Renner’s character can’t make it, I could have brought bow and arrows to complete the casting! hahahaha! :D

That Captain America little boy was really charming! He’s a stand out in his group!  I’m sure Tina would agree that Gabby would look more handsome in that same blue-red-white-superhero suit!

So much fun for that unexpected mall visitors! We left First Avenue Mall and went to Prangin Mall just across the street where Tina and Gabby bought some stuffs. We ended our very special-superhero weekend by savoring one of our favorites…

One cone of Mcdonald’s CHOCOTOP is perfect enough to end a weekend!

Another weekend of family.food.and.fun in Pulau Pinang was wonderfully spent.

It’s MARVELous!

Happiness continues tomorrow. :)

CHILD’S PLAY

“Daddy, thank you for bringing me there at the playground!”  –I was the happiest man alive when Gabby uttered those words in verbatim. A simple one hour stroll to that nearby park cum playground became a memorable late Saturday afternoon for the two of us.

The father-and-son-date-at-the-park was originally set in the morning of Saturday, 04/14/2012 but despite Gabby woke up early on a weekend with a statement, “Daddy, I’m on time!” -referring to his punctuality to our morning call time of 7AM, it didn’t push through because he chose to play with his mom’s ipod leaving me to a cup of coffee while surfing the web and the cable TV channels.  And so I told him, “If we’re not going to Taman Riang  (Riang Park which is several blocks away from our appartment) this morning, if you want, we’ll go there late this afternoon when the sun is almost down.”  Then he replied casually, “OK!”

After I spent hours post-lunch time on marking mini-test papers of my students which I brought home and other stuffs to while away time, I almost forgot my agreement with my son. At few minutes past 3PM, Gabby reminded by requesting me, “Daddy, punta tayo sa playground!” (“Daddy, let’s go to the playground!”). I told him, “Anak, mamaya, mainit pa!” (“Son, it’s still hot; we’ll go there later!”).

If you must know, our present appartment here in Butterworth, Penang also has its own playground however, Gabby’s interested to explore Taman Riang for he sees and passes by it daily with his service-van-driver, Aunty (the usuall petname of Malaysian older women, as Ate or Manang to Filipinos) who picks him up to and brought him back from school every morning and afternoon.  Finally, I assured him, “Gabby, we’ll go to the playground around 5PM.”

As Tina chose to stay home to prepare and cook food and continue her devotion to watching “The Vampire Diaries,” Gabby and I geared up and got ready to go. Then the unexpected happened. It started to drizzle. And not for long, it rained hard. So I told my son that we can postpone again the stroll to that place.  But I felt he really wanted to go, hence we both waited for the rain to stop.

Apparently, what we saw, what we did and how he and I enjoyed the moment were all documented of course, on those photos.

Quality time for family however long or short is absolutely important. I am blessed that I have my family here with me. ;)

MOMENTS WE LIVE FOR

These are some of my favorite shots taken several weeks back when my family and I dined in two food places in Gurney Drive (that deserves a separate post). Then, the last photo was taken a couple of days ago after Gabby handed his advance Easter greeting card, one for me and another for his mom (hence, the date). I just cannot help but to smile whenever I look at these photos that captured little moments that we all enjoyed. They keep me sane, actually! :)

Our young family life has so many imperfections and we have problems here and there but we take efforts to smile and baby steps to rise up from life’s challenges. :) Waking up every single morning with my family is a huge blessing already that outweighs any hassles. At the end of the day, the fact that Tina, Gabby and I remain happy and alive together for better or worse, for rich or poor, in sickness and in health is reason enough to be grateful to the Lord and celebrate.

Happy Easter! God bless. :)

ITCHING TO MOVE IN

We’re moving in to a new appartment-to-rent in July.

About couple of months back, I texted a Chinese agent whom the other Filipino expats relied onto to find and look one for us during lunch time and just before dinner that same day, Tina, Gabby and I found ourselves appreciating this simple yet quaint appartment owned by a Chinese-Christian landlord.

Sharing with you some snapshots before we do some cleaning in few weeks time and perk it up a bit…

The kitchen and the laundry areas…

I am guessing that this will be Tina’s most favorite spot…

This fully furnished 3-bedroom-2-toilet & bath located at 10th level of an appartment may be far from being a mansion, but definitely we’ll make it a “HOME”.

While condo units and appartments (what’s the difference?) located at Roxas Blvd in Manila-Pasay City would cost a fortune, this seaview appartment in Butterworth, Penang has reasonable monthly fee with a priceless view of Penang bay…

Any suggestions for the interiors? I mean, little add-ons?

Salt. Rice….hmmm… what do we need to bring in first to a new home?

We’re like playing bahay-bahayan in Penang!

This will be a new exciting chapter in our lives.

Pray for us, thank you!

PENANG BOTANICAL GARDEN

My first exposure to the idea of horticulture was when I was in fifth grade after my teacher asked us to bring plants, small figurines (I brought a tiny bridge and a water well, both made of ceramic), pebbles, moss, soil and a glazed pot, he taught us to make a “dish garden”.

From then on, I have thought I would have an intense fascination with such, much more to have an instant green thumb; I was absolutely wrong! haha! :) Well, at least, I learned to appreciate twigs, leaves and flowers.

It was a long tiring week for us but we’re not complaining. In fact, we’re even grateful for days passed by so fast and weekend dawned in a swift.

The challenge has been always to make a variety of experiences every weekend. Apart from finding solace every time we attend mass, it’s a bit sickening when you only go to malls, dine and shop a little and repeatedly do it on a Saturday-Sunday-basis (read : expat life can be dull or fun!).

In a place where most women cover their hair (and practically everything!) with veils for religious purposes, my wife decided to have hers rebonded, haha! It was her very first time to go to a beauty salon, spend a few money for her virgin locks and that was one of her ideas of creativity with weekend.

While my wife’s long straight and shiny hair was under that UFO-looking steamer, Gabby and I decided to leave her inside the mall, hopped on the bus and went to find our own unique Saturday. From bus, we rode this tram that took us to Penang Floral Festival in Penang Botanical Garden…

I have been to a few Botanical Gardens of other countries and honestly, that of Penang wasn’t that impressive (my personal favorite is the Winter Garden in Auckland, New Zealand). Yes, Penang Botanical Garden is a good venue for picnics; a place for strolling and jogging or just kill time and commune with nature but I think I have seen a lot more fantastic gardens before. Nonetheless, the festival made it livelier, with so many plants for sale and for photo-enthusiasts to enjoy…

My son and I never bothered to know the names of the blooms neither asked the vendors of their  commodities’ prices, what I remember was we were in awe of the colors.

Among the flowers, I can identify this easily because its name was the brand of the notebooks I used back in college.

And from my PreMed Botany class, I knew this is a pitcher plant…I told Gabby that this plant can trap insects effortlessly. Please don’t tell me they remind you of condoms…oops!

There was a showcase of bonsai too!

Simply amazing!

It was a total feast for the eyes! I felt like a bee, admiring those vibrant and wonderful God’s creations.

Much to my son’s delight, Penang Botanical Garden has these voluminous tailed mammals wandering freely all over!

we almost locked eyes! i wonder if it recognized an old familar face, "long lost relative?" haha! nah!

Like any day in Penang, the sun was unforgiving last Saturday afternoon so after an hour of stroll and getting close with Mother Nature, I decided to go back to the mall where we left Tina (inside the beauty salon).
We brought 2 affordable & small potted bonsai (of course, they’re small; they wouldn’t be called such if they’re not!) as pasalubong for Tina (to bring to our new home come July).
Gabby and I became sweaty and all, I had to freshen him up; changed his shirt but nonetheless, he had his first-hand lessons on nature appreciation and he liked it. It was a day less ordinary.
We ended our Saturday with a simple dimsum dinner after attending anticipated Catholic mass.
Enjoy the new week, everyone!

OLD SCHOOL TOY

In the age of computer games, tech gadgets and applications, creativity in play and activity is still alive.

Several weeks ago, Tina and I brought Gabby to a toy store in a mall.  After giving him the liberty to pick a new toy he fancies within our prescribed minimal budget (read: mura dapat sa hirap ng buhay ngayon!, haha!), he disregarded our toy-suggestions and handed me this at the counter…

We gave our thumbs up for his choice. It wasn’t pricey and more importantly, we didn’t want to kill his artistic inclinations…

It’s one of the best options with his almost daily routine of computer games and watching cartoons and downloaded movies and at times, reading his books (FYI, he’ll start his schooling here in Penang in August, God willing).

But in between being artistic and (God forbid–) being interested in our fields…

Tina and I still like him to be what he wanted to be.  Last week, he professed he still wanted to become a chef, restaurateur and hotelier someday.  So help us, God! :)

PRICELESS MOMENTS

If you’re following this humble site for some time now, you’ve probably read in my previous posts that I share a huge 2-storey-5-bedroom penthouse with 4 male Pinoy MD-lecturers who aren’t only my colleagues but my friends as well. Our appartment is located a stone-throw away from the bay and is within a well-off community here in Butterworth.

Other than the fact that they’re generous enough to let me occupy the master’s bedroom since I do have a family, one thing that attracted me to live here is the handsome ambiance of the lobby…

Last Tuesday, I was so excited to go home from work after I received Tina’s text message stating that she has captured Gabby’s fun moments at the swimming pool. Obviously, our son did not contain his happiness when he dipped into the pool and tried stuffs in the playground.

Even if he doesn’t know how to swim yet, it was pure bliss to see him having fun.

I like this shot; ang gwapo ng anak ko! kanino pa magmamana? :D

He met a Malaysian boy who lives a level lower than our floor.

Believe it or not, Gabby’s new found friend is a year older than him. He’s already 7, Gabby just turned 6 last October.

ang laki ni Gabby for his age, hindi halatang hindi kami mayaman, hehehe :D

He’s adorable, isn’t he?

The fun continues this weekend as Tina, Gabby and I go to that so-called mini-Las Vegas and Disneyland-inspired theme parks here in Malaysia. :D

KIDS WILL BE KIDS

Five months have been my longest physical absence from my family. Apparently, I missed Gabby a lot since I left him and her mom for work here in Penang last 29th July. So when the two of them arrived here last Saturday, every second has been truly momentous.

I was so excited to see him again, so thrilled to check how he has grown with only her mom on his side. I remember seeing him first on video-call via skype with only one front tooth then but now, he has 2 already. :D He remains to be my boy wonder. I should give all the credits and praises to her lovely mom, Tina. *thanks, honey!*

On their 3rd day here in Penang, I brought Gabby to work because Tina has to attend to her appointment in a medical institution here.

It’s very flattering to hear comments from my fellows here that Gabby’s good looking and seems to be a nice boy. *ehem, blame it on genetics!*

And since the medical university-college where I am working (with 23 other brilliant Filipino MD-lecturers) has yet to put up a Day Care Center soon for all employees’ children as part of our benefits, I took Gabby first at our faculty room. He lorded my work station and played with another kid, the son of my colleague.

Look how kulit they were so early on a Monday morning at my work desk…

I had to relocate to a vacant table of a colleague who’s currently in Manila just for my place to accomodate these 2 kids.
My laptop, daily morning papers and whatnot needed to be transfered too.

I have to take extra care of him everytime we ride Rapid Penang bus.
I have to prepare his food, snacks and drinks.
I have to accompany him to the toilet whenever needed.

I had to convinced him to doze off in the afternoon even on a couch beside our photocopying machine.

And because Tina was requested to report back to her appointment on Thursday, I’ll take Gabby again with me to work on that day.
I’m not complaining.
I so missed this thing called fatherhood.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HONEY!

To the woman who makes my heart beat purposely and the one who makes my days meaningful,

‘Ney, you know how Gabby and I love you dearly; cliche it may sound but our lives aren’t complete without you.  You and Gabby are my greatest blessings!

Sorry for all my shortcomings and thank you for all the love and understanding you’ve been giving me for almost 7 years (+3 years prior to our marriage) and counting.

Happy Birthday to the woman who rules my universe! :D   ILOVEYOU+Gabby so much!

I’ll see you and Gabby here in Penang in 18 days! :D

AGONY OF AN OFW DADDY

I never felt so helpless in my 34 years of existence until the past 48 hours.

While my 6-year-old son was having episodes of vomiting after meals, loose bowel movements on top of intermittent fever ranging from 38′C to 40′C + and was complaining that his head hurts, I was only on skype to monitor him.  How pathetic was that?

I feel so sorry that I am not beside him to assess what’s wrong with him; was not there to give him medicine, was physically absent to feed him and cannot personally bring him to hospital for laboratory check up, neither I can even comfort him to say the least. :(

My wife, Tina who was with Gabby the whole time he was sick, had difficulty in dealing with the situation alone despite being a nurse herself.  We both broke down to tears while we’re on skype;  my experience was more painful, worse I felt futile because I cannot do anything but pray.

As early as Monday afternoon, she brought our son to a private hospital where blood tests revealed lymphocytosis (an elevated volume of specific white blood cells) which could mean presence viral infection; thankfully his platelet count was within normal count ruling out Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.

With prayers, love and support from family members, relatives, friends and even anonymous blog and facebook buddies and intake of  prescribed antipyretic and increase volume of fluids and much needed rest, Gabby’s feeling better now. Update : he became febrile again this Thursday morning and will be brought back to the hospital for follow up consult and repeat blood tests.

In those moments, I know I was only helpless but certainly not hopeless for I know God is with us.

I wish I will have the means next year to bring my family here in Penang not only for  a vacation  but for them to stay with me here for good as I continue with my work.  This will all happen if Tina can find work here after I have applied dependent/calling visas for the 2 of them and only if we can afford sending Gabby to an International School here.

My wife and I can only wish and plan things out for the best, but still, we’re both submissive to His will.

3 YEARS IN A ROW

Looking at photographs of annual events makes me more reflective on how time flies so fast.  On my son’s photos taken from their preschool’s celebration of Linggo Ng Wika every August, it’s so apparent how he has grown from a cute and chubby boy to a charming little man now.

On August 2008, Gabby who was then a Nursery pupil, was a little Katipunero in their parade.

A year later in his Kindergarten, he appeared like a very young statesman, so dapper in his Barong Tagalog; charming, isn’t he?

And just last week, Tina emailed me the photo that showed how she became resourceful and creatively made used of our old table runners from Baguio City and bought some rooster feathers just to transform Gabby to look like someone from the Northern Philippines. :)

Our son was assigned by his preschool teacher to be the “apo” or looked like a “mumbaki” to me, as the entire Preparatory level was dressed to represent the northern tribes…  Gabby led his group in dancing the lullaby chant of the natives, Salidumay.

For 3 years since he started schooling, this was my very first time to be absent in his activities.  :(

There goes the  little sacrifice of an OFW dad.

FRO-YA : FTW!

During most of our grocery shopping, Gabby would have his own smaller cart to push and usually gets his own stuffs from shelves once Tina and I give our mutual nods.

One of his favorite grocery items is :

Yakult (ヤクルト, Yakuruto?) is a Japanese probiotic milk-like product made by fermenting a strain of skimmed milk with a special strain of bacterium, Lactobacillus casei Shirota. (Sourced via Wiki).

Now, imagine savoring Yakult as a creamy frozen ice cream.

Yakult + ice ceram = two of every child and kid at heart’s favorites.

Wonderful, isn’t it? :)

Sebastian\’s Premium Ice Cream has the edge over other cold delights; it has offered FRO-YA (Frozen Yakult) ! That cute little boy who happens to be my son, had enjoyed that  tangy flavor of our old-time favorite drink on ice cream when we went to TriNoma mall in Quezon City this afternoon. He had it as dessert after our hearty dinner with my balikbayang-in-law.

Fro-Ya on the left for Gabby, and Sebastian’s Mango Sansrival on the right for me. Yum! :)

Yakult cannot be better than this!

An option to countless Fro-Yo (frozen yogurts) available in town.

Do you drink Yakult ?  Have you tried Fro-ya?

TAKOT KA BA SA KULOG?

Do you remember being afraid of thunder and/or lightning during your childhood?

I don’t.

Perhaps, I fear other forces of nature more.

Apparently, the story is different with our 5-year-9-month old son, Gabby. I found him one late afternoon sleeping soundly on the couch with hands covering his ears.

When he woke up, I showed him the photo above and asked him if he’s afraid of thunderstorm.

He said he’s not; he just didn’t want to hear its roar while he sleeps.

Oo nga naman,  hate is totally different from fear.

My wife and I believe it’s parents’ privilege to grow up with their kid/s;

every day with a child is a reflection;

every minute is a new learning experience;

every second is a blessing!

NOT YOUR ORDINARY PET

When we went to SM Megamall last Sunday to accompany my balikbayang-in-laws for their very first glimpse of the Metro after their 5 years of living in California, Tina, Gabby and I spotted one kiosk that sells crustaceans as pets. We’re so amused.

These are hermit crabs with shells that are hand-painted with colorful cartoon characters.  We found them too cute for words!

Imagine how Gabby giggled over Spongebob and Mr. Krabs-painted shelled pets. They’re a visual delight!

Located at the basement of SM Megamall building A, the store is called Lucky Hermits. Wonder how lucky can you get once you own one. :)

I didn’t ask for the bigger ones but those in photos above are priced at PhP 300 per set that includes one hermit crab, a small plastic container and its food for limited duration, I guess.

Did we buy Gabby a clawed creature for him to own as pet?

No.

Although it’s a given fact that it’s very rewarding to have pet/s, it’s also too demanding to own one and we felt that our almost 6-year-old son isn’t ready yet to care for such living thing.

I, personally cannot imagine if he’ll become so attached to it then one day, it’ll bid him goodbye due to natural cause.  *paranoid* :(

We want Gabby to learn how to care for himself first before he shares his love to others (for now, his love is exclusively ours *greedy smile*.)  Some weeks ago, he began to take showers on his own.

We don’t even own a dog yet; but if time comes that we’re ready to care for one, the three of us would like to have a pug one day. We like it so adorably wrinkled. We also want to set up a salt water aquarium once we’re ready to pay incredibly high electric bills.

What about you? What’s your pet?  Would you like to have a hermit crab as house pet?

If you do, you might want to read this site regarding basic care of hermit crabs (oh yes, an association of crab owners even exists, would you believe? :) ) –>hermit crabs.com

PARA SA NANAY KO

Whenever July ushers in, there’s only one simple celebration in our family that’s always anticipated; my mom’s birthday on the 15th. But sadly, she’s not with us again this year. :(

My dear mom will celebrate her 58th birthday for the second time away from us. She’s in the Middle East, still maximizing her expertise in the field of management and accountancy that she has gained for more than 35 years and counting.

I miss her terribly.  Her pieces of advice on anything about life, particularly on doing what’s always right and prioritizing family above self, constantly serve as a guide not only to my family life but on my entire being.

She, other than my wife and son, gives me so much strength and inspiration to continue to struggle throughout life and hold on to hopes and keep our faith in God.

On one of her e-mails to us a few weeks back, she simply wondered if  by any chance, she’ll receive flowers again on her birthday this year. FYI, She usually gets a bouquet either from her sons (ehem, I’m the eldest and religiously try to give her one), from my dad who, one time gave her a simple 3-piece-roses bought from a street vendor or from her boss or gifts from friends and colleagues who value and love her the most.

She loves flowers from the tiniest bloom to even grass with colors. She likes her photos to be taken at almost any floral background she sees. :D

And because she’s abroad, I thought that honoring her on my blog and sending this post’s URL to her on her special day will somehow make up for our lost time.

Mamy, since it’s useless to go to Dangwa in Manila to buy you a bunch for your birthday because you’re not here and you’re like a million miles away except when we’re on Skype; also, you know that sending you a bouquet via courier will cost me a fortune and could not afford at the moment, here are photos of  gorgeous arrangements I captured in a flower shop when I visited Shibuya, Tokyo few months ago.

It’s you whom I first thought when I saw these flowers because as you know, Tina prefers food more than twigs and petals, hehehe. :)

I know you’ll like them even just on pictures;  anyway, ‘it’s the thought that counts,’ right? :)

Mamy, I’d also like to thank you for all the love and support that you’re giving me and my family unconditionally.

I don’t think there’s a perfect woman to occupy the position of being a mom to all of us but you.

Always take care of yourself; take your medicines and multivitamins regularly and please do eat on time.   You know you won’t be productive and cannot think best if the tummy is empty. Drink liters of water to avoid dehydration in your place where 50 ‘C temperature is felt on a daily basis.

Whenever you feel home-sick, just close your eyes for a while, breathe and simply think of your 3 apos (read : 2 from my younger brother who’s a private pilot and of course, Gabby from Tina and I) and your 4 sons and Daddy of course, you know that we’re only a Skype and an e-mail or a text message away.

I’m so sorry for all our shortcomings.

We love you so much, Mamy Tessie!  Advance Happy birthday po. We miss you so much.

BAHAGHARI

Gabby never fails to amuse me.

Just after he saw a rainbow painted on gray skies the other afternoon, he asked      me,

“Daddy, is that a rainbow?”

I said, “Yes, why?”

Then he replied back, “First time kong makakita ng rainbow eh, bakit po sa cartoons dark ang colors nila?”

I’m amazed how kids of his age are so intuitive and easily fascinated with simple things.

Don’t you wish to be forever child-like, to have lots of time to breathe, be worry-free, and do nothing but enjoy simple pleasures in life?

LOVE IN A BOX

20 June 2010 –I left the house 20 minutes before 6 in the morning when my wife and kid were still curling up in bed. I can’t blame them; everyone deserves longer hours of sleep on a weekend.  But I had to leave even with an empty stomach because I gave my nod to a commitment to do clinics from 6AM to 10AM for a pharmaceutical company somewhere near our place. So even if it’s Father’s Day 2010, I didn’t pass on the chance to work even on a beautiful and sunny Sunday morning; after all, providing for family regardless of the value is one of the reasons for the occasion.

After that short but productive stint, I went to TriNoma mall to buy food for our lunch. I bought ingredients for pasta for Tina to cook.  I also bought a cake that Gabby and I have been meaning to try.

Because my almost 6-year-old son is still too young to give me presents except for his priceless hugs and kisses, I took the effort of bringing home what we would enjoy together…

We like Blizzard from Dairy Queen. Gabby likes Oreo, while both Tina and I like Chocolate Extreme served upside-down! :)   Ice cream never fails to delight us and having it as a cake is a huge plus!  We’re all excited when I came home yesterday with the box of DQ Cherry Chocolate Ice Cream Cake! Sarap! :D

“Not your traditional cake. Made with thick and creamy DQ soft serve ice cream and layered with fudge, cookie crunch & chocolate and vanilla ice cream.”

Each slice was heavenly! Our sweet craving was absolutely satisfied.

I rememeber during my wonder years, my parents used to bring us 4 boys to a famous ice cream house along Aurora Blvd Extension in Quezon City to savor their cold treats and take home a box of ice cream cake. Sadly, this place that I’m sure, became a part of many Filipino childhood memories closed several years ago and we never had ice cream cakes since then.

Before dunking our forks to that wonderful dessert, Tina cooked pasta with two sauces to choose from- pesto and carbonara.

So while most families celebrated Daddy’s Day by dining out, we’re at the comforts of our own table, enjoying home-cooked meals and an ice cream cake that’s to-die-for! :)

To my own Daddy and fathers-in-law and to all dads out there, Mabuhay po, tayong mga tatay!

It’s always a great pleasure to be appreciated for all of our efforts.

How did you spend this year’s Father’s Day?

WORTH LIVING

You’re my peace of mind in this crazy world.

You’re everything I’ve tried to find.

Your love is a pearl.

You’re my Mona Lisa.

You’re my rainbow skies.

And my only prayer is that you realize.

You’ll always be beautiful in my eyes.

He’s the kid who makes my life worth living…

I love you, Gabby!  Your mom and I are here and will be here for you, come what may.

JUNE ONE

I grew up on the quote from my parents and maternal grandparents that

‘”Education is the only thing that no one can take it away from you.”

It has been ringing in my head for more than 3 decades and now that I’m a parent myself, I and my wife take full responsibility in bringing our kid to school, despite the enormous challenges of doing so.  And we return the favor to our parents even if it isn’t obliged as we inculcate the same quote to our son as early as now.

As educators, my wife and I easily irk when our college students disregard their schooling but that’s another story.

Today, we enrolled Gabby on his last year in preschool–Preparatory.  Oh yes, it’s that season again of covering books with plastics, buying school essentials like bags and other school supplies. These are the days that remind me how glad I was during shopping of new school stuffs when I was in my younger years.  I guess, it’s innate with kids or with anyone to get ecstatic whenever we acquire new things, even the simplest ones.

These are his books and notebooks with 2 more books left undelivered. His teachers this morning told us that although it’s not a requirement, this is the stage when Gabby needs a stroller-bag that God forbid, may stress him and his fetcher (mostly me, Tina or his Lolo Ben depending on our schedules).  Why do young kids need to carry heavy loads to and from the school while the college ones do not even keep a pen in their pockets?

We’re just happy that Gabby is excited again to go back to school unlike other kids I know that force and coercion are needed for them to attend classes.

Tina and I only bought him 3 sets of uniforms and a new PE shirt just to cut a little on expenses; anyway, his old pairs are still wearable. We still need to shop for his school supplies just before he reports on June 17.

Time flies so fast. It seems like it was only yesterday when he attended his first day in Nursery…

Gabby and Tina on his first day in preschool as he attended his Nursery class June 17, 2008

Good luck and God bless you, anak on your schooling! Just enjoy everything and flash those smiles always! :) Anong gusto mong baon, Gabby?

GABBY ASKED

“Daddy, gusto ko ng kalaro, kailan po ako magkakaroon ng kapatid ?”

When we’re blessed with Gabby almost 10 months after we got married (just so you know, he’s a honeymoon-baby),  I and Tina thought of having our second child after our first reaches the age of five.  Gabby is almost six in few months time and admittedly, we’re not ready yet to have his sibling/s.  There are a lot of things to do; we have a ton of hopes to accomplish and more importantly, we’re still enjoying Gabby.  God willing, if and when we welcome another addition to our family, we wanted to be more ready with everything if not, at least the basics. We wish to give the same attention, love and care to our future kid/s similar to what we’re providing Gabby.

I replied with a smile to our son and saw Tina smiling too. I told him he’ll have his little brother/s and/or little sister/s in God’s time.

We’re proud of our son. His innocent query implies he has healthy mind and body.

Now, it’s another story when he’d ask about the birds and the bees!

Like batteries, we have to be ever ready. :)

TOY IN A BOX & RESPONSIBLE FEEDING

Like most kids of his age, Gabby fancies McDonald’s Happy Meals and the toys that come with it.

Meet his new found friends :

Brogan, Shrek and the Little Wooden Puppet of Shrek Forever After collection.

I don’t remember owning a McDonald’s Happy Meal toy until my college days when I started enjoying my cheeseburger meal with those cute dogs from 101 Dalmatian collectibles. These toys that come in every box of meal make fast food dining more pleasurable to kids and kid at hearts.

Sure, these funky toys come with foods that are  high in calories and often excess in saturated fats and salt that if taken abundantly might just lead to obesity.–Don’t ask me now about calorie counter but the rule of thumb that I observe is ‘everything should be in moderation’. Parents, of course, should always take responsible steps in feeding their kids.

Gabby’s favorite Happy Meal is crunchy chicken-McDo with rice + he loads it with at least 2 servings of buttery gravy. Yum!  Seriously, I think it would not hurt if  he enjoys his meal that comes with his preferred toy once in a while particularly when we balance it by providing him healthy food choices at home.

Just so you know, Gabby appreciates some veggies; he even liked them earlier than I did when I was his age.  He eats Guinisang Monggo, sayote in Chicken Tinola, potatoes and carrots in Menudo and other veggies without force and coercion, hehehe! :)   So it’s a simple pleasure for him whenever his wish of having a toy+Happy Meal is granted.

While these McDonald’s  Happy Meal  toys are the current source of joy of our kid, his smiles and giggles remain our simple bliss. :)

BATANG BIBO

We let Gabby enjoy his vacation from preschool by watching cartoon marathons and by playing his Happy Meal toys,  PSP and Plants vs Zombies. :) While he’s into his fun moments, I unearthed a photo file and found something to ponder.

Tina and I are proud parents of a kid who dreams of becoming an Iron-Chef someday but shows raw talent in public speaking.

At age 4, he surprisingly delivered the 2-stanza poem,  For My Country :

Gabby has been consistent winner in Declamation Contests in his school for 2 consecutive years.  He won 3rd place out of 50+ Nursery students last year and ranked 4th out of 50+ Kindergarten pupils this year.

Last February, he recited a 5-stanza poem, Planting Rice :

Tina and I are amazed how Gabby conquers stage fright. It seems he doesn’t fear a huge group of audience at a young age. He’s also very much talkative interactive with his classmates when in school.

If you must know, other than being healthcare professionals, we’re also humble college educators but admittedly, both of us, who have so much more to learn, didn’t acquire teaching skills and the art of public speaking overnight.  As for Gabby, he shows the talent as early as now.

He’s also into academic awards :

Like most parents, we don’t want to dictate the future of our child.  He’ll be what he wanted to be.  He can be a rockstar, a restaurateur, an athlete, an artista or somebody with a decent job for as long as it’s far from politics; it’s OK with us. :)

I don’t know but probably because of the recent National Election, I’m having paranoid thoughts that his young  talent in rhetoric would lead into public seat someday.   *afraid*

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS

Last week, my wife, Tina along with her colleagues paid another co-worker a visit at her hospital bed.  One of her fellow clinical instructors has been fighting Breast Cancer and its complications for several years and is now admitted because of her terminal condition.  The sight, according to Tina was unbearable.

At lunch time yesterday, my wife informed me via text that she and her colleague will drop by a Pediatric I.C.U.  after their work to visit another sick patient.  This time,  it’s a 2-month-old baby of  her colleague, who was admitted for several Congenital Heart Defects.

When she came home early evening, Tina described how she felt upon seeing the infant.  Being a nurse , she understands the pathology but as a mother, she was deeply affected by the condition of the baby.

We were talking over dinner last night how grateful we are to the Lord, that despite our own problems and struggles, Gabby, Tina and I remain healthy and hopeful.

TATAY-DOC SPEAKS

“A man’s worth is measured by how he parents his children. What he gives them, what he keeps away from them, the lessons he teaches and the lessons he allows them to learn on their own.” ~Lisa Rogers

I am a young parent.  My son is turning 6 this October; and a month prior to his birthday this year, I’ll be celebrating my 34th.  I know it’s not our ages or the number of children we have that defines a parent.  It’s the maturity that lies in accepting the responsibility of becoming one and  how he handles and goes through life with his kids.

In both troubled and happy times, I draw strength from the Lord, not for myself but for my son.  He and his mom are my utmost priorities.

                                                        THEY HAVE REDEFINED MY LIFE.

                                                              THEY’RE  MY  LIFE NOW.

I’d like to see my child grow as a whole-rounded individual who always keeps an open mind to understand that life isn’t purely fun and play but also filled with trials and tears.  I know it’s too early for Gabby to absorb all these but is there any rule or specific date for parents to inform kids about  these things ?

I and his mom always try to explain to him in simplest possible ways, those little facts of life. Like when we usually see beggars on streets; kids sleeping on gutters, some people who are ill, particularly of his age, we frequently tell him that he’s luckier more blessed because he’s healthy and free from any sickness; he has a home to shelter him, and so fortunate to be well-fed; with no early obligations except to enjoy schooling and his childhood.

Perhaps, it is clear to my son, that we may not have everything now, but at least we’re living life happily together with so much love and faith in God.

With the way things are, my wife and I are so grateful to the Lord for having  Gabby.  Not only because he is smart and excels in his studies and extra-curricular activities but he simply brings joy despite the hassles and challenges of our daily living.

I am aware that I have to continuously grow as a person for me to become a better parent; and every single day is such a wonderful learning experience! :)

I’M HOME

I am home now!  :D   I had to cut my Tokyo trip shorter to a couple of weeks instead of 30 days because of an internal problem that I’m not in control and I cannot share publicly.  I never failed any training because there was none for me to begin with.  Nonetheless,  I have experienced the worse and the best of Tokyo and will continue to share them here on the coming days.

TOKYO DISNEYSEA will be my next post so be sure to visit my site again.  To my kind readers, I’ll swing to your blog soon.

For now, I’m sharing you the things that happened yesterday…

Tina herself, did the  rescheduling of my flight with PAL last Sunday in less than 5 minutes.  I had enjoyed my 1-hour trip from Tokyo to Narita Airport terminal 2 via the very efficient Narita Express.  Ticket from Shinagawa to the airport costs Y3,310 (PhP  1,655).

Some people told me that flights are fully booked until April but these pictures will speak for themselves…

It’s Holy Week and time to reflect on things so I’ll try to avoid rants…Moving on..

My meal at 36,000 feet before heading home…

Beef stew with blanched carrots and okra;  served with Japanese noodle soup, bread and butter and mung bread; orange juice and coffee.

The flight went OK except for bumpy descent and hassle of an hour of waiting for my luggage at the NAIA terminal 2.  To PAL : improvement is much needed!

Traffic at EDSA was minimal so I reached our place in Quezon City in less time I expected.  I just dropped off my luggage and bags at home and headed straight to Gabby’s big day…

I can’t imagine myself missing this moment.  I brought to the graduation venue Gabby’s most requested pasalubong; PSP with 4 gig memory stick which I bought from AKIHABARA ELECTRIC TOWN.  A 3rd honorable mention-Kindergarten graduate and a very adorable son deserves more than this.

After the event, we had simple dinner at KKK in SM Cubao… I was craving for Pinoy food for 2 weeks and these were very comforting…

The smart kid requested for Halo-halo…

We shared Nilagang Bulalo, Buko Pandan Juice, Halo-Halo Mestiza, Kaning Puti and Kare-Kareng Baka ng KKK…

Nothing beats the comfort of being HOME. :D

Time to avoid meat...Have a blessed Holy Week everyone!

Stay tuned for my next posts : TOKYO DISNEYSEA and so much more about Tokyo…

JUST HAPPY

While everyone is all praises honoring the winners of the 2010 Academy Awards, I’d like to share with you what I got from our 5-year-old son, Gabby last weekend; as what I consider my very own Oscars trophy for the moment… :)

Too cute for words, eh?

Isn’t it more than enough to make any parent smile and be happy?

Enjoy the new week, everyone! :)

TEAM GABBY WINS! (PART 2)

Last Saturday afternoon was one of our happiest! :D   Gabby, at only 5 years old has been continuously reaping academic and extracurricular awards much to our pride as parents. Nakakawalang-pagod! :D   To think that he’s not living a child’s life less ordinary as he’s not that geeky-grade-conscious preschooler and even preoccupied with his past times : Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, we cannot wish for anything more than good health, a best future and more fun days with him.

Just before completing his Nursery last year, he placed 3rd out of 51 batchmates in their Declamation Contest. This year, he repeated his victory by finishing 4th out of 50 Kindergarten pupils. He also earned a medal for his Math Quiz Bee. Not to forget he’s Top 2 in their class’ 3rd grading period.

After four long hours of activity, we all deserved a nice meal from one of Gabby’s favorite food places.

He was so excited as Tina and I brought him from Ateneo (Hogan Conference Hall; their contest’s venue) to Amici+Caramia in Tomas Morato.  He got to bite at his favorite Quattro Formaggi pizza again! Yum! :D

Here’s what we feasted for Gabby’s win…

PENNE AL SALMONE AFFUMICATOA distinct pasta dish with a rich flavor of smoked salmon.
PANINI AL SALSICCE  – Italian Sausage Panini;  Amici’s homemade flavorful links with veggies.

AL QUATTRO FORMAGGI -Four Cheeses Pizza. :D

A visit to Amici isn’t complete without having Caramia’s gelato!  Here are the drool-worthy gelati we enjoyed….

STRACIATELLA.  Gabby’s choice (PhP 60/scoop)  in a wafer bowl (PhP 10).

BLUEBERRY SUPREME.  ‘Twas my delight that weekend. :)

CHOCOLATE TORTUFO. Tina’s choice (PhP 95+) out of the many GELATO CAKES from Caramia.

Amici + Caramia are included in the list of our family’s favorites.  And if it’s a favorite, I don’t mind posting it over and over again  (View previous posts HERE and HERE) . :D   For one day, I know Gabby will read this and we shall savor again the experience and the tastes we had during his victorious day!

TEAM GABBY WINS! (PART 1)

The past few days have been overwhelming! :D   My family and I cannot thank the Lord enough for so much blessings!

No, we didn’t win in lotto or something; how we wish! But it’s beyond what money can buy. :D

Last Thursday, I failed to attend to my son’s Math Quiz Bee in his preschool because I was on an appointment that turned out to be life-changing for me, career-wise; I’ll share it here soon.  For now, here’s the photo that Tina took during Gabby’s addition-subtraction contest.

Then Saturday came and off we went here…

We arrived in Ateneo past 11 AM and there we dressed up Gabby to look like a cute farmer…

With camisa de chino in celadon green that I bought for only PhP 50 in Divisoria (where else?),  his props of faux grains for another P50, his old yellow shirt that his mom wrapped around his head with a straw hat purchased at PhP 35 all bought in Tabora Street completed his look.

“PLANTING RICE”, his 5-stanza-poem was randomly given to him by their teacher several weeks ago.

Before they start the program, I took a photo of Gabby with MY CRUSH FOR HIM among his classmates. Her name is Chloe. :D   Isn’t she lovely? Bagay po ba sila ?  …No strings attached yet! It’s just me. :)

I told Tina while we’re waiting for Gabby’s turn to conquer the stage that I never experienced such palpitations and extreme nervousness since my Medical Board Exams. I was too anxious that I wanted our son to do it well and be done with ease.

And after 50 Kindergarten students from 2 sections have recited their pieces, Gabby bagged 4th place which gave him the trophy and made him a winner in 2 consecutive years.

When he was in Nursery last year, he was named 3rd placer on the same contest. You may view it HERE.

“This Declamation Contest is not intended to exhibit the proficiency of the child, but to give him/her experience in speaking before an audience. Nervousness is thus eradicated, confidence gained and stage presence developed.” -TTA.

We’re having PPS (Proud Parent Syndrome) again.  He just recently ranked Top 2 in his class for their 3rd quarterly grading, then he won a trophy for his declamation and a medal for his Math Quiz Bee.  The boy deserves a prize he wanted.  But it will be granted to him in due time as we’ve agreed. :)

Here are Gabby’s mentors in school (left) and his greatest teacher at home (right)…

(applause, applause!)

TINA and I  always feel like a WINNER for having a son like him.

We’re just so proud of loving him.

We always thank God for giving Gabby to us.

God is great! :D   His love is overflowing.

————————————

PS : We had an early dinner somewhere… That’s on my next post.  Till then.

Have a great week everyone! :D God bless.

LEAVING ON A JET PLANE

inside jetstream 41 cockpit

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go
Cause I’m leavin’ on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go

Cause I’m leavin’ on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go”

No one’s leaving yet, ha ha! :) This song instantly popped out of nowhere last night right after I came home exhausted from an appointment.  I had a long day yesterday and I found myself humming this tune inside my head.   Then my imaginary singing led to flight of ideas.

What if my wife who’s a California-Registered Nurse and a Visa-Screen Certified by CGFNS finally finds an employer to petition her and would have to leave me for several months until she gets to petition me and our son?  I am not worried with being alone to take care of Gabby but with Tina. Can she bear and thrive without the 2 of us? ha ha. :D   Who’s gonna wash the dishes?  Who’s gonna clean the toilet ? LOL! :D She’ll LOL when she reads this. But the thing is, unlike you, kind reader, my wife barely scans my posts.

Or what if I’ll find an opportunity that will also require me to do the same thing of leaving my family temporarily for greener pasteurs, err we’re not cows! for a better future ?  Will I also experience what they call “homesick-ness” ?

FYI, my dad worked as an OCW in KSA, Kuwait and UAE for more than 17 years and his earnings brought us to High School and College. Back then, he’d sent us so many “voice tapes”  in C30 or C90  (how very 80s) with a usual message that he missed us so much.  At present, I constantly chat with my mom who’s in UAE for work and would always tell her we miss her too.

I know it’s unwise to count the chickens before they hatch.  I learned that from Farmville, LOL.  :D

I am not preempting things; I’m just anxious thinking of the possiblities.

It’s an open book that Tina and I are trying to find chances of working abroad. But it seems luck isn’t on our side yet.  We’re not complaining. We both believe that the Lord has better plans for all of us and that sometimes, things don’t happen the way we planned it. We may not be content with the way things are at present and despite the challenges that life brings, we just have to trust His plans and let His will be done!  Do I sound profound now? :)

For those of you who are members of the local work fields, have you also considered going abroad to earn for your family?

Or have you lived/have been living that life with homesick-ness?  If so, what’s the most memorable thing that you’ve experienced working abroad and lessons learned of doing so ?

LET’S WELCOME CHANGE

February 22, Monday – I left my family (Tina + Gabby) at home  (date was declared as special local holiday for schools because of EDSA Revolution anniversary) and rode LRT line 2 from our place, then MRT from Araneta Center-Cubao Terminal Station up to this EDSA-Taft-Pasay LRT Station.

I went to Department of Foreign Affairs in Pasay City to get Tina and Gabby’s new passports. Believe it or not, it took me only less than 5 minutes to claim it.  So their previous green passports are now machine-readable-maroon…(sometimes, I imagine them blue! *wishful thinking*)

I renewed mine 2 years ago and will expire 2013 while  Tina and Gabby’s passports are valid until 2015.

Allow me to share these old and new passport photos of our little biggest bundle of joy…

Isn’t he a grown little good-looking man at 5 ?  :D   That photo on the right was taken at 4:30AM hence the morning face.  :)   How time flies so fast!  His first passport + photo were taken when he was 4 months old; apparently, he’s really a happy baby; the photographer at the studio in a mall did not find any difficulty making him smile giggle.   His old passport was stamped at Hong Kong, Brunei and Auckland, NZ airports.  We traveled with his Graco stroller then; even used it on buses in NZ. :D

I have claimed their new passports in a jiffy but they have applied for its renewal for several hours!

Flashback : February 01, 2010, Monday – Gabby was absent from preschool class and made a personal appearance at DFA. Although kids of his age who’d like to apply/renew their passports can just leave everything to their parents/guardians, and adults can have the process via on-line scheduling too,  Tina and I opted to do it traditionally and brought Gabby to avoid any hassles. Turned out to be we’re in for a big old hassle!

Ang saya!  We woke up at 3:30AM and arrived at DFA at around 4:30 in the morning.  The basketball court-waiting area was already packed!  Nothing has changed since I have renewed mine a couple of years ago.  Unlike Boarding Gates at any airports where passengers with child/ren and/or geriatric individuals may board first,  at DFA, they only give considerations to pregnant and old applicants only.

Yes, it was very systematic but looong queues were still there. We’re done with application, verification, processing and encoding (inside the DFA auditorium) at 9:20AM flat.  It was really exhausting. :(

Imagine, until last Monday, the scene was the same…

But let’s thank God for change!  Have you heard that DFA Consular facility +passport services will be moving to its new state-of-the-art building located at Diosdado Macapagal Avenue in Pasay City ?

“Instead of sweltering heat, our consular clients will be greeted with cool air at the moment they enter our doors. Instead of monobloc chairs, they will wait their turn sitting on ergonomically-designed stainless steel benches. Instead of long queues, they can shorten their wait by accessing our online appointment system. Instead of going from building to building, they only need to move from ground to second floor,” DFA Secretary Alberto Romulo said.

DFA consular personnel, Romulo added, would also enjoy the convenience of modern work stations, furniture and equipment.

The building was acquired for a price of P530 million with the assistance of the Development Bank of the Philippines.

The facility will be opened to the public once it is formally inaugurated in the next few weeks. For the time being and until further notice, the consular services requirements of the public will continue to be attended to at the DFA’s existing consular facilities along Roberts Street.

IN A WORLD OF RESTLESS AND YOUNG

In a month or so, Gabby will be done with his classes.  And 6 years after we became first-time parents, Tina and I still cannot believe that our little boy has done Nursery and about to finish Kindergarten soon.  I guess all parents out there would agree that it’s a BIG accomplishment already; although we know there’s a looooooooooong way to go for the 3 of us. At least we’ve started the first few steps happily together. :D

Preschoolers nowadays study lessons that my generation had learned later in grade school.  We take it as an advantage for them of course.  But let me ask you, when did you learn your proper and improper fractions and how to add and subtract them ? What about mixed fractions -the ones with whole number and a fraction ?  Synonyms and antonyms ? Concepts of Greater than and Less than ?  Differences of Solid, Liquid and Gas ?  Were they taught to you as early as Kindergarten ? *grin*

It’s not only the preschool syllabus that evolved and became, IMO, far advanced (–again, I’m not complaining) but also the extra-curricular activities.

Last week, we heard our son singing screaming :

“Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams,  for my love….will see you..through…”

My wife and I looked at each other with astonishment! Where in the world did Gabby learn a very old OPM song?  :D   I, myself haven’t heard of it in years!

Tina and I are children of the 80s.  And at 33, I can still recall our preschool activities and whatnot but  I do not remember singing these songs in school when I was Gabby’s age :

My Love Will See You Through  by Marco Sison

Thank You For The Music   by Abba

Somewhere Out There  by James Ingram + Linda Ronstadt  (I remember this from a late 80s movie)

Yesterdays Dream  by Donna Cruz

Actually, it was nice and fun to hear and see a 5-year-old kid singing somewhat-matured songs! :D   He even picks up his Jumbo pencil and assumes it as his microphone while singing at the top of his voice.

Tina and I are just proud parents and are so glad to be in a world of restless and young! :D

I wonder what’s on for their next week’s classes… hmmm… *excited*

Meanwhile, here’s what Gabby was singing when I’m writing this…

We are the world of the restless and young
And we need a hand to guide us
Helping each other, build each other
As long as we’re together you and me

For together we stand, divided we fall
Together we climb to the top of the world
We can be what we want for the world to see
That we are the children of yesterday’s dream

:D   Can you recall your preschool days ?

:D   What are your fondest memories of those years ?

:D    What songs were you singing then ?

GABBY’S V-DAY 2010

Dear Gabby,

Although I immensely enjoyed my Sunday morning and afternoon with my co-bloggers in Binondo (which I will narrate to you here soon),  still nothing beats  spending Valentine’s with you and your mom, naks! :D

Your mom and I are so glad with your choice of movie; how many of your age would have interest in Zeus, Poseidon, Athena and the rest of Mount Olympus? :) I myself have almost forgotten my Greek Mythology and haven’t found it more fascinating than this.

It was fantastic! My  Our kind of movie–no heavy stuffs,  just plain fun.  You know how your mom and I are both kid-at-hearts. :D   The story line about Gods, Goddesses and Demigods didn’t bore me from beginning to end. It actually drew me to the scenes that I almost forgot my biggest problem to date; it’s so effectively entertaining! (at least for us, LOL).  How can you go wrong with the director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone?  To cut it short, it was amazing watching the film with you and Tina as usual. Sarap ulitin sa Gateway Mall dibidi (joke!). :D

I know your mom will less appreciate it (than dining) but I still insisted  managed to buy her official Valentine veggies from Rustan’s.

If Percy Jackson was magical, our dinner was a champion! :D

We skipped starters and immediately ordered one of our family’s favorite pizzas…

It has been a while since we last tried this. You know it’s one of our comfort foods! :D

salmon + caviar on pizza =  Yum!

PIZZA CAVIALE SALMONE, P365+.

When you told us you’d liked to have a glass of iced tea, we never thought twice in ordering this for you…

TE PESCA, P98+  Peach flavored Iced Tea, refreshingly good!

And since your mom wanted to try other pasta and pass on our usual order of Rigatoni All Alfonso, how did you like this ?

Don’t you just like those bow tie or butterfly- shaped pasta called farfalle ?  ’twas your first time to try it, right?

Cibo really knows how to pamper our eyes and palates so well…

FARFALLE ALLA VENEZIANA, LA FAMIGLIA, PhP 455+. Sauteed bits of seafoods in cream + parsley + butterfly pasta

Your choice of dessert was also commendable!  Even if at first you’re torn between Mango Panna Cotta and a Chocolate slice; but we ended up having another old time favorite…

TIRAMISU.   It was nice you enjoyed it sharing with me and your mom. :D

With Cibo’s absolutely delicious food, nice and edgy ambiance, almost flawless service  and watching that adventure-fantasy movie, we really had another fun start of the week.

Thanks, anak for making our Valentine’s this year memorable and complete. :D

We love you.

-Daddy Gelo (formerly Tatay-doc)

PS : BTW Gabby, who’s your crush in school ? *grin*

:D   How was your V-day? Did you celebrate Valentine’s Day or Single Awareness Day ? Is the acronym for that, SAD?  *peace*

WE LOVE HIM SO

With those crooked lines and untidy sheet, this may be the most imperfect Valentine’s card to you but isn’t it LOVE when you see perfection in little things that are not ?

Never mind if the message was only copied from a teacher’s writing on the board; who would not appreciate LOVE this ?

I LOVE YOU GABBY & TINA (or Tina and Gabby). :D

Enjoy your Hearts’ Day everyone!  :D

A PLEASANT SURPRISE

His mom went to her morning shift in the Operating Room today with her Nursing students and will be out by 2PM.  I was left to accompany our son, Gabby to his preschool to attend to a brief parent-teacher-meeting and claim his report card.  And to my surprise, their teacher’s aide greeted us at the school’s gate, “Congratulations poTop 2 si Gabby!”  :D

Wow! Even it was so anticlimactic, certainly I cannot complain. It was ecstatic to hear those words so early in the morning! :)

Gabby and I sat in his room with other parents and kids. We shortly waited for our turn and when it came, the teacher prepared and handed me this…

Sweet! :D   It was only last November when Gabby made it to SIXTH PLACE ON SECOND QUARTER  out of 30 Kindergarten students in his class and now he sky rocketed to SECOND HONORS!  I cannot help but to have PPS (read: Proud Parent Syndrome) again. :)

I heard from his teacher while talking to other parents that the basic problem of the previous members of the honors list (excluding Gabby) was failure to follow exam directions. It really pays to follow rules.  When it’s asked to encircle, you never underline.

Inspite of difficult and advanced preschool curriculum, Tina and I are proud that Gabby is picking up something from his 4-hour-a-day-schooling.  I will make a post of what kids of his generation study in school soon.

The teacher commented that Gabby was the only one in the class who knew one particular VERB (remember your action words?) and its SYNONYM.

Teacher :  “Daddy, si Gabby lang po ang may alam ng synonym ng HUNGRY!  What’s your answer Gabby?”

My son :  “STARVING!”

Daddy Gelo :  (note to self :  You’re son’s  really a foodie at a young age!) :D

DISTURBING BEHAVIOR

If you’ve been to Boracay, or at least have read or viewed something about it, you may be familiar with this beautiful rock formation known as Willy’s Rock, the famous landmark at Boat Station One in the island paradise.  It’s entirely visible in the morning, and is always almost half-submerged during high tide in the afternoon.

We were fortunate to see it and experience the crystal-turquoise waters and pristine powdery white sand on the last week of October just last year.

This morning, Tina and I were literally shocked; can’t help but uttered “OH MY GOD!”  when we learned from a news item reported on Umagang Kay Ganda, a local morning TV show, that the owner of the resort where Willy’s rock is located, removed and burned the image statue of the Blessed Virgin on top of the grotto because of the reason that he’s now a pastor of a certain religion thus his act, alarming the parish priest of the Island.

We honestly respect other religions and beliefs but my wife and I are disturbed why others can’t do so.

Just imagine if our 5-year-old son who was with us in Boracay last year knows about this, how do you think parents should explain that other people could do such thing to something that represents one’s faith?

CHUBBY CHEEKS

Now that Gabby is turning 6 years old in 9 months time, I and Tina miss his old self.  Yes, he’s still that lovable and smart kid but the way he looks now seems like he’s BABY-NO-MORE!

Yesterday, I was browsing our family photos in my files and I found these…

taken at tagaytay highlands when he's 3.

We miss his chubby   taba-chingching cheeks !
We love him so much and he’ll be our BABY-FOREVER! :D

FIELD TRIP 2010 : PART 3

After a wonderful animal-encounter at Ocean Adventure in Subic, the 5 buses of preschoolers (Gabby & his batchmates) with their parents (including me and Tina of course) and teachers trooped to Clark, Pampanga and had a brief exposure to Filipino history & culture.

We already heard few years ago that NAYONG PILIPINO which was previously located in Pasay City near the airport, is now in Clark, Pampanga but we only got to see it last week.  This TEMPORARY RELOCATION of the famous replica of most tourist spots of the country was done to give way for the building  of the 2 Ninoy Aquino International and domestic terminals.  And the latest we’ve known from our trip,  plans have transpired to push through with the new construction of Nayong Pilipino near the SM Mall of Asia area.  Have you heard of this news?

First stop : the replica of church in Bulacan imprinted on Philippine Ten Peso-Bill.

MALOLOS CHURCH served as venue for so many Philippine Constitutional Conventions.

Then there’s also those WALLS of  INTRAMUROS and what appeared to look like a river however, there was no running water but a rock bed.

The Nayong Pilipino guide informed us that this Clark’s version is divided into 2 parts : Precolonial and Post Colonial eras.

At the Precolonial area, the simple Pinoy lifestyle before the Spanish regime is depicted. We were greeted by an Ifugao native dance…What a warm welcome for all of us!

The short performance of the natives was a fresh sight to the kids who were used to gyrating pop music.

The simple and creative way of living of Filipinos long before we were under foreign rules were shown in these huts built without a single nail or screw and amazingly can withstand any typhoon.  I guess these native shelters truly represent what early Pinoys were – imaginative, resilient, simple.  Do we still have these qualities at present ? :)

“Movable Ladder – Walang Akyat-Bahay! Ang galing ng ating mga katutubo!” (click the picture to enlarge)

Weaving of textiles with intricate and colorful patterns was also demonstrated.

Panggatong, anyone ?

This is a replica of an upscale Muslim house that’s suited for a Sultan or Datu, the village chief in Maranao, Mindanao. It’s called TOROGAN.

The Torogan House has colorful and intricate butterfly-like end beams that protrude in front of the house; apparently gorgeous Maranao artwork!

There are also monuments inside Nayong Pilipino to honor Philippine History and Literature…

On the left is  Ang Alamat ni Malakas at Maganda… And on the right is Lapu-lapu, the chieftain of Mactan, pardon the pun, appeared to us as depressed in his stance… (click photo to enlarge) I believe Lapu-lapu deserves to be depicted victorious having been considered as the country’s first hero.

There are also monuments for Philippine Folklore’s goddesses – the likes of Mariang Sinukuan and Maria Makiling; but I didn’t take photos for I personally didn’t like how they were created. Imagine a statue of a women who look distraught complete with a dress-slit nearly up to their inguinal areas!

Moving on… The Post Colonial Era…

As far as I recall, there are replicas of houses of Filipino heroes – Apolinario Mabini’s, Jose Rizal’s and others’ that played significant role in Philippine History.

Note the features of houses during post colonialism greatly evolved and was then inspired by Spanish architecture.

As parents, Tina and I are always trying our best to be well-rounded with Gabby. We appreciate joining his field trip for we know that there’s more to life that kids should learn outside the corners of their classrooms and beyond reading their books.

We left Nayong Pilipino at around past 5 in the afternoon to head for our last pit stop : Puregold Duty Free for some shopping.

Another family fun-bonding time enjoyed. :D

PS :  Because we as a family have experienced being in few amusement parks abroad, Tina and I wish that local authorities would exert more efforts in putting up and maintaining quality and cleanliness in our very own tourist spots.

INTRO TO VEGGIES

Our 5-year-old son, Gabby is still a little picky when it comes to something to chow down and digest.  And as first-time-parents, Tina and I  have been alarmed with this. Like other mom and dad, we also want our kid to be comfortable with all  those go, grow and glow foods! :D   Don’t ask me now about them, LOL  :D …it has been decades since my Elementary years! (All I know is that most these fiber-rich foods are essentials to health unless otherwise contraindicated).  Surprisingly, our kindergarten is done reviewing them last year in their Science subject (yes, preschoolers now are far advanced compared to my generation!); although he’s already aware of those food groups, he still has his own preference at an early age.

My wife and I cannot convince Gabby completely to eat all veggies.  He only prefers potatoes (especially mashed with gravy or when cooked in Menudo) , sayote in Tinola (our option to papaya),  carrots, some greens like cabbage and pechay but only when cooked in nilaga (Boiled Pork and Vegetables).

Few days ago, we just learned directly from our own dining table that he also love the broth of  Sinigang na Baboy (Pork in Sour Broth). We know nothing can replace eating greens in whole, but at least it has bits and pieces of boiled veggies.

As Gabby usually favors Quattro Formaggi, Mozzarella Garlic pizza and Crispy Fried Chicken with lots of gravy from McDonald’s, we know he tries to be obedient to us by gradually eating greens instead of mostly junkies.  It’ll take time before he gets to be ready to eat Okra and Ampalaya. LOL! :D

Before we hit the grocery shelves last week, another craving was satisfied. That day, I long to eat Fresh Chinese Lumpia!  And I’m so glad that Tina gave her nod and two-thumbs-up for the lumpia that we sampled… I give my wife the credits for her photos below…(applause, applause)

We had this delicious Fresh Chinese Lumpia from Yin Yiang, one of the stalls in Landmark Foodcourt in TriNoma mall.   We like other versions of lumpia~ fried or fresh,  but we love Chinese Lumpia more!  The symphony of textures of boiled veggies with seaweeds and fried vermicelli in union with finely ground peanuts and dark peanut sauce is just heaven on a plate!

Tina and I ate a piece each at the foodcourt, and after our grocery shopping, I asked her to buy 3 more lumpia for us to bring home. :D   We gave one to my dad-in-law (who’s with us for a break from California until he goes back there tomorrow) and we enjoyed again another pair of lumpia for dinner sans rice!  Sarap!

But did Gabby like it?

No. :(

Kids will be kids.

I think Tina and I are to blame.  We never introduced veggies and fruits to Gabby earlier than he discovered it.

Still we will not vehemently insist.

After all, we know he’ll like it eventually :D

HOLIDAY STYLE

:D How far would you go for your child (or your love one) to stand out in a crowd ?

After I sourced the materials from where else but Ylaya Street in Divisoria, Manila amidst the traffic and thick volume of shoppers beating the holiday rush, my wife Tina began her part.  She hand-sewn a Santa Claus’ hat from scratch.

Our 5-year-old son, Gabby attended his preschool’s Christmas Party in this hat, which was painstakingly-made with so much love by his mom.  :D He and the rest of his batchmates joined an all-white-in-a-Santa-hat-themed party yesterday, 18 December 2009, 09-11AM  in Shakey’s Pizza, Tomas Morato in Quezon City.  It was the signal of the start of their 2-week-holiday break before their classes resume again come January 4th next year.

Can you spot our kid?

Tina and I didn’t want Gabby to just wear like what the others will be wearing so we exerted a little effort for our son’s look to be more “porma  a bit edgy.  Honestly, the lunatics in us were hoping that there’ll be an award  a prize for the cutest attendee just like when Gabby won similar title during their school’s Halloween Party this year, but yesterday was none. :(

Actually, I brought the materials to a nearby seamstress and paid PhP 80 for labor of sewing but when I showed the hat to Tina, she was disappointed with how it was done (cliche “you get what you paid for” applies) and decided she’ll do it herself.

Before I went to Manila to buy red and white satin for Tina to use for the hat, we strolled Rustan’s and Crossing’s department stores inside Shangri la mall and bought his white cropped pants and some holiday trinkets which Tina had to accesorized Gabby’s look. :D

We got his Hotwheels sneakers from Landmark in TriNoma and made him wear a pair of knee-socks (remember local basketball player, Samboy Lim?) in red and white stripes and his cheap black bow tie all from SM department store.  Glad to see his legs looked like candy canes of an elf!  :D   Can you imagine we spent more than a week going through malls in Mandaluyong and Quezon Cities to as far as Divisoria just for our son’s 2-hour-occasion?

While Gabby and his schoolmates were having fun with the games and tunes of Nobody and Jai-Ho ringing over our ears, my wife and I had 2 orders of Shakey’s Super Platter (passing on their Bunch of Lunch) which has a soup, a side salad, a piece of fried chicken, a pair of mojo potatoes, 2 slices of thick crust Hawaiian pizza and an oatmeal cookie for dessert.  We had a pitcher of house iced tea to share. :D   We were satiated over the brunch but we favor dishes from another pizza bistro place.

Gabby didn’t win in any of the games neither he bought home a prize except for a bar of VanHouten Fruit and Nut chocolate (yes, sugar load again!) but we’re happy to exposed him in an event made specially for kids of his age.

Can’t wait to join their educational field trip this January 15th and to attend their declamation contest on February (FYI : Gabby won 3rd place this year with his poem FOR  MY  COUNTRY out of 51 students). With our son’s activities, I feel I’m a kid again! :D

:D How was your pre-Christmas parties?

BOXES OF SURPRISES

:D What’s the BIGGEST box you received as gift ?   Have you received a gift box that weighs 25 kg ?

It felt like Christmas came more than a week earlier to my family.  I got 2 wonderful boxes as presents from our relatives and remittances in USD from my parents and in-laws. :D

Last Monday, 14 December 2009, on my way home from an appointment in Makati, I received a text from my wife, Tina that a box with my name was delivered at our door steps; it came from her aunt who works in London.  The generous sender happens to be one of those few clients who received prescriptions from me.  She was in town perhaps for the holiday break and was too sweet to give me this 3kg box of sweets! :D

As usual, our son, Gabby was more than excited than me to open the package!  The box has 400 grams of  Toblerone, and 2 assortments of chocolates in reusable tub and carton pack; they’re called Celebrations and Nestle Quality Street, all purchased from UK.

It was indeed a pleasant surprise to end my very tiring day! :)

Of course, I’ve been sharing it with who else but Tina and Gabby. :D  Those mini bites of maltesers, snickers and truffles are my favorites (other than the local chocnut, hehe).

Another box of chocolates called Nestle Quality Street packed in recyclable carton box was included in the box.  I was amazed that even the colored outer wrappers can be reused for compost where they’ll decompose and be use to grow plants.  What a greener way of getting rid of them after enjoying the goodies. :D

We haven’t sampled all of them until now.  It has Toffee Deluxe, Milk Choc Block, Toffee Finger, Orange Creme, Orange Chocolate Crunch, The Green Triangle, The Purple One, Vanilla Fudge, Toffee Penny, Coconut Eclair, Caramel Swirl and Strawberry Delight. Whew!  So many chocolates, so little time, LOL :D

Then the second box we got this week was unbelievable!

It was an early Christmas present from my in-laws in San Leandro, California. They sent USD for Tina to purchase this at an appliance store in a mall.

If the first box weighted 3kg, the next one tipped the scale at grossly 25 kg!!!

It was a perfect gift to replace the ‘jurassic’ one.

We cannot thank them enough for everything…I am just lucky to have good relationship with my in-laws and I’m keeping it that way. What about you? :D

We don’t get washing machines as gifts every yuletide season. :D  Now, that makes it one of unforgettable tangible gifts we received; and we’re hopeful for more blessings to come, THANK YOU!

Life is so much easier with this twin tub!

LEARNING BEYOND BOOKS

08 December, 2009, Tuesday – After we had a hearty late lunch in a classic Chinese restaurant, EMERALD GARDEN in Manila, we explored a place that is exclusively dedicated to fun and learning. :D

My wife, Tina and I usually maximized our days off from work by spending extra quality time with our preschooler son, Gabby.  And whenever we go out, we always make sure that Gabby will enjoy.  Just a couple of weeks ago, we went to PHILIPPINE SCIENCE CENTRUM in Riverbanks, Marikina City and seven days back we had another special trip to MUSEO PAMBATA in Roxas Blvd., Manila.

This interactive children’s museum allows visitors, both kids and young-at-hearts to touch exhibits, play and experienced everything hands-on. It’s a place that encourages a total-senses-child learning.  I believe in that too –I always tell my nursing students and reviewees that ‘learning is easy when all senses are utilized’.

Since Museo Pambata was only established in 1994 when Tina and I were already college students, we had no chance to be there during our wonder years.  Nevertheless, it isn’t too late to become a kid again; not that we’re having 2nd childhood already, heck no! we’re too young to have dementia and all, LOL :D But with Museo Pambata, the kids in us were unleashed once more! :D

Illustration above via MUSEO PAMBATA.

Who says learning can’t be fun? :D

The museum is divided into several sections : PAMILIHANG-BAYAN / Market Place,  PAGLAKI KO / Career Options, KATAWAN KO / Body Works,  TUKLAS!/Science Through Discovery, MAYNILA NOON / Old Manila, KALIKASAN/Environment, and many more.

I personally found the MARKET PLACE as most amusing.  Kids can assume to tend a store or pretend shopping in wet and dry sections or perhaps in a shoe or drug stores.

In PAGLAKI KO / Career Options, Museo Pambata gives children a bird’s eye view of work opportunities when they grow old.  Gabby enjoyed becoming a community worker for a while…

Money matters! :D Even kids should learn that hard-earned money should be valued at all cost.

There’s a small section near the Market Place where kids get to feel how it is to be in rural areas of the country…

While the Market Place seemed the most amusing, KATAWAN KO /Body Works section’s the most interesting for us. :D   Just like in the old  Science Centrum years ago, there’s a similar version of those anatomical parts in humongous scales! It’s hard to resist not to go through the exhibit’s main entrance – a wide-mouth! One will pass through it down to esophagus, stomach, and intestines and out to you-know-where! :D

In TUKLAS / Science Through Discovery, there are similar pieces that we’ve seen already in PHILIPPINE SCIENCE CENTRUM but Museo Pambata’s versions are more well-maintained; thus, more inviting for visitors.

What’s a museum without retelling a history ?  On the first floor of the museum are 2 fascinating exhibits — KALIKASAN / Environment on the left side, and on the right, MAYNILA NOON / Old Manila.

Have you seen a small scale of Binondo Church or Basilica Minor de San Lorenzo Ruiz? FYI, It’s a nice replica where visitors can go inside and take pictures of the church. :D   This section of Old Maynila also brings back museum goers to the era of Galleon Trade and the days when Meralco Tranvia de Manila was still one of the modes of transportation in Manila.  Sayang, authorities could have kept this tram until now for people to appreciate and still serve its purpose like the tram in San Francisco. Oh,well, at least we have the LRTs now. :D

Who says learning history is always boring ? :D

I cannot imagine Pinoy History without Dr. Jose Rizal, Katipunan and the evolution of flags…

The old Pinoy house, furnitures and all also caught our interest…

Some important aspects of Mother Nature is replicated at the section called KALIKASAN /Environment…

Do you agree with me that every Pinoy kids should be brought to this fun place ?  I wish parents are reading this post.

Have you been to Museo Pambata ?  How was your experience ?

MUSEO PAMBATA, Roxas Boulevard corner South Drive, Manila (It’s beside US Embassy in Manila and at the end corner of Kalaw Ave. and Roxas Blvd.)  Entrance fee is PhP 100 for kids and adults, walk-in. Teachers with valid ID are free; Manila residents are given discount.  Museum is closed every Mondays.  Museum hours : 8AM-5PM (Aug-March) and 9AM-5PM (April-July).

IT’S OVER!

I have been quiet about this but truth of the matter is, we have decided to finally part ways.

I have thought about this a thousand times,

and even tried to save and reconnect the thing between us.

A relationship becomes futile when one is unhappy.

We’ve enjoyed our togetherness but everything has its end.

Parting is truly a sweet sorrow.

But we all have to move on.

Although it’s so difficult,

we all have to make decisions.

We only wish for strength to withstand temptations.

HO HO HO

Did Do you believe in Santa Claus ?

We bumped into him in Shangri la mall last Sunday and our son, Gabby took the chance of having a photo-op with him.  It was the first time he saw Santa in the flesh!  The red clad old man even gave him 2 pieces of candies. :D   Perhaps he really knows that our son has always been naughty  nice. :D   He is super nice!

Back in the late 80s, we used to hang old knee socks at our capiz-windows a day prior to Christmas thinking that all our wishes to Santa Claus will be granted.  I even wondered how Santa does the gift-giving despite our lack of chimney and a fire place, LOL :D   Everything was seemed to be magical until my brothers, cousins and I saw our grandmother putting in packs of  sliced cheese and some candies into our socks which apparently any kid would not wish over toys. :D

How did you discover the myth legend about Santa?

How do you explain Santa’s being to your kids?

In as much as we want Gabby to believe in flying reindeers and Santa’s existence, he has a mind of his own now and somehow knows how fantasy differs from what’s real. Still, he gets excited with the cheers that the holiday brings.

HO HO HO! :P

FREE MASSAGE, ANYONE?

My wife, Tina has been stressed these days, not because I am her stressor, LOL :D but due to inevitable daily hassles -both at work and at home.  Primarily, we don’t have a housemaid for more than a month now!  Our maid got pregnant, so she and her husband left to their province down south to give birth next month with uncertainty of reporting back to work. God knows how difficult it is to find another trustworthy housemaid.

Other than people living independently abroad or solitaries in dormitories, I am not sure if you have experienced a life without a maid or at least to have ideas  how hard it is to juggle work and household chores.  I, myself do some laundry especially on my days off at work; thanks to the fact that our ‘jurrasic’ washing machine with spin-dryer is still functioning!  Tina and I also take turns in accompanying and fetching our son, Gabby to and from his preschool and whenever we’re both unavailable, we can always import my dad from my folks’ place in Pasig to pitch in for us.

I want to give Tina a break from all those loads she usually get from her job as an Operating Room nurse-Clinical Instructor, and from fatigue-inducing roles she does at home.

Unlike most women, she hates shopping (How lucky I am to be her husband, right?).  She will only buy clothes and shoes whenever there’s a need or an urgency to do so, say for an event or an occasion that we have to attend. She’s like my mom when it comes to prudence and  practicality and admittedly, I am  their total opposite. :D   We compliment each other and we like it that way :D    Tina prefers to eat out with us rather than buy herself a new pair of shoes or jewelries. She  hates spending too much and wouldn’t want anything illogically priced.

Certainly, my wife deserves pampering. I would like to take her to a spa and treat her to a massage. Then again, if I get to spend more than our domestic budget, she might not enjoy the entire experience.  Good thing that few days ago, Doc Grace of   Doctor is vaIN, the 2009 Philippine Blog Award Best Beauty Blog, wrote a comment on one of my recent posts, inviting me to participate in her blog contest in which she’s giving a lucky winner a chance to experience  Terra Wellness Spa in Discovery Suites, Ortigas, Pasig City.

What’s up for grab from this contest?

Terra’s Signature Massagethis deeply relaxing massage combines slow and graceful gliding strokes that are applied to the different key pressure points of the body to relieve tension and aid blood circulation. The experience is enhanced with the use of specially blended therapeutic oil.

Take a peek into Terra Spa…

Note : All photos were sourced here.

I do wish I could win this for Tina for I know she’ll definitely appreciate it; not only because it’ll give her the full-75 minute sublime relaxation (worth PhP 1,700) from Terra Wellness Spa but even affordable as it is, she loves anything FREE!  Who does not want freebies? :)

THEIR SIXTH; OUR FIRST

Usually, most special gifts don’t come in huge boxes and colorful bows but intangible things.

Last Friday, I came home dead tired from work;  thankfully, what put the widest smile on my face and saved my day was this present :

Our 5-year-old son, Gabby ranked 6th in his 30 student-Kindergarten class.  :D   My wife and I are having PPS! (read : Proud Parent Syndrome!) :D

We’re so glad that he made it this second quarter to the list.  I attribute Gabby’s achievement to Tina’s efforts of guiding him on his academics.  His remarkable class rank reminds me that I should also give more quality time tutoring him on his school assignments.  I also sit with him and help him do his homeworks but not as usual as his mom.  We’re not pressuring him though, but we know he can exert more because his interest in learning is so apparent in attending school and even in participating in those so-called extra-curricular activities.  He also behaves well in and out of his classroom.

If you must know, preschoolers now study the concepts of  greater than and less than and  addition and subtraction in Math;  personal hygiene and body parts as well as parts and functions of a seed, a plant and its flower, so with number of legs of insects in Science. In Language, they’re done with the use of has and have, pronouns- he, she, it, verbs /action words; plural and singular nouns and more!   In Reading, they’ve studied community helpers and their jobs;   and Gabby now knows how to read short sentences. :)

During my preschool year (I was then accelerated from Nursery to Grade 1 after passing an exam), I know little of those topics but I ranked 5th of my Nursery class. Basic Computer subject during my time was taught in High School but with Gabby’s generation, they’ll soon be having Computer and Filipino subjects as early as next month!

Our son enjoys watching Asian Food Channel (other than his favorites -Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network) and he dreams of becoming a chef one day.  And (defensively,) we didn’t spoon-fed him of what he should be like in the future because as young parents, we believe that we’re only here to guide him all through out his journey. :D   Perhaps what influenced him to wish to work in a kitchen someday are the things we do best – eating and enjoying every gastronomic adventure!  He isn’t a chef yet but our little foodie has already developed his own preference to some delights that never fail to please his palate :)

He may not have ranked first in their class but he is and he’ll be our Number One!

Congratulations, anak!  Keep it up! :D

Always remember you’re our greatest gift from the Lord and we’ll be forever grateful to Him :)

MERRY SPOONFULS

One of the perks of being a father that I enjoy the most is having kiddie moments with my own child.  I’m such a kid-at-heart, so dealing with my preschooler son’s cravings isn’t a big deal especially if it concerns his appetite for ice cream….

Can you imagine a world without ice cream? :(

We may have different views about it but you will surely agree that this is too hard to resist…

HAAGEN-DAZS FONDUE, PhP 790+.

Share a luxurious Haagen-Dazs FONDUE created from molten DARK chocolate sauce combined with an assortment of mini scoops, fresh seasonal fruits and patisserie…

Pieces of chocolate chip cookies, wafer sticks, marshmallows or a heavenly soft pastry….

Selection of fresh tropical fruits : perfectly thin slices of bananas, apples and strawberries…

  • Every Haagen-Dazs Fondue comes with :
    • four mini scoops of Macadamia nut,
    • four mini scoops of Strawberry,
    • three mini scoops of Cookies and Cream
    • three mini scoops of Choc Choc chip

The extra regular scoop of Hazelnut Chocolate isn’t part of the Fondue but an extra order, PhP 150+.

My wife, Tina, our son, Gabby and I met up with my youngest brother, JC at SM-Mall of Asia last Sunday (after hearing mass and eating breakfast at Greenbelt, we mall-hopped to MOA!) afternoon and experienced this elegant taste bud-stimuli. :D

My wife’s guilty pleasure was also apparent on her serving plate…

I personally prefer dark chocolates over other variants and because this Fondue comes with dark chocolate sauce, it makes the experience more  sinfully delicious!

Every dip   dunk is like a piece of heaven! :D

Go ahead, feast your eyes… Haagen-Dazs is such an irresistible temptation. Each layer of  velvety creamiest ice cream comes with layer of taste, sensation and pleasure…

Our son, Gabby can make himself a good endorser, don’t you think so?

Oh and I almost forgot to tell you that we enjoyed this finest ice cream creation without spending a cent…

I still believe in the saying, “The best things in life are FREE!” …

Forgive me, I am only sharing these GCs with my family; I know you also agree in the saying, “Family First Policy!”

Don’t worry, I’ll let you peek again at our next Haagen-Dazs intensely rich experience. :D

Haagen-Dazs is truly a pleasure in its purest form!  Go ahead, inspire your senses…

If indulgence is a crime, then my family and I are guilty as charged! :D

PS : We got the GCs from here  :D

And will you agree with me that HD Fondue in the Philippines is better than HD Hong Kong’s? view here

BORACAY SERIES : NATURE AT HER BEST

This is my 6th and last post in this series.

1

Few meters and a tricycle ride from Boat Station 1, we found ourselves out of the beach and into another fascinating place where Mother Nature still reigns supreme…

IMG_4620

On one of our days in the island, my wife, Tina, our son, Gabby and I visited the small but interesting butterfly farm at Fairways and Bluewater in Boracay.  It only took us PhP 30 of tricycle ride, PhP 60 per adult entrance fee (Gabby’s free!) and a few minutes to appreciate these lovely winged creatures…

IMG_4606 We kept our silence while in the vicinity so as not to disturbed the butterflies and…

IMG_4619

more butterflies and surprisingly, these nocturnals…IMG_4609

Who would have thought that those delicate butterflies can exist symbiotically in this farm with an owl and a few number of bats ?

IMG_4600

It was our first encounter with bats and man, the smell was not good!  But at least they remained  in deep sleep while we’re in their midst.

It was a sort of an impromptu educational field trip for our son :D

IMG_4592IMG_4614

Our Boracay break may have been too short but we enjoyed it, definitely. :D  IMG_4645

Gabby got some shells, cut corals and a handful of powdery sand from the shore.  And before we left the island paradise, we spent our last morning at the beach as early as 6.  We had another dip and took a stroll once more.

IMG_4643IMG_4710

It’s difficult not to miss Boracay, particularly Boat Station One where sand is finest and everything is surreal.

IMG_4430IMG_4493

We can’t be thankful enough for the opportunity to visit one of the best beaches in the world.  We’re so glad that the weather was best  all throughout our days in Boracay and our flights went smoothly.

Life cannot be better than this. :D

SPONGEBOB LOVE

On his first birthday, he wore a muti-colored-custom-made clown costume because my wife and I decided to have a Finding Nemo themed birthday party at home with our parents, relatives, friends. He then matched the real clowns present on his day.

His second birthday party was done at McDonald’s Greenhills.  He had two birthday cakes and more than 50 guests.  Grimace, the mascot graced the occasion.

My wife, my parents and I only went to TriNoma mall in Quezon City with him and had dinner at a Filipino restaurant called Mangan with his 3 mini-cakes that we bought from Breadtalk on his third birthday.

He went to preschool before his fourth.  Since then, he already has his own preference.  At his Nursery class, he had Mr. Bean themed party complete with party hats and all that’s fun.

For his fifth birthday…

The THEME : Someone who lives in a pineapple under the sea! :D

The INVITES…IMG_4063We were working on a budget and my wife can’t tolerate crowded stinky places as she easily feels dizzy, worse her vertigo might be triggered,  not to forget she wasn’t off from duty at the Opeating Room, so I was alone when I went to the basement of Divisoria Mall in Manila  just to buy these fancy invites for PhP 2 per piece.  168 Mall didn’t have the supplies I was looking for.

I grew up going to the streets of Ylaya, Tabora and Juan Luna in Divisoria every start of a new school year with my parents, whenever they buy us (me and my 3 brothers) new sets of things for school : from socks, undergarments, hankies, etc. in some Chinese-owned wholesale store.  So buying stuffs for my own kid now and haggling were so damn easy for me. :D

The LOOT BAGS…IMG_4118I honestly thought of having paper instead of plastics for the loot bags as I am concerned, believe it or not, with the environment.  But I failed to find commercially available paper bags with the prints in line with the party theme and I and my wife had no time doing art works made of paper just for the loot bags. These cost PhP 20 per 10 pieces (also PhP 2 a piece).

What’s inside the loot bags? Each has a hand towel (PhP 75 per dozen) , a pencil (PhP 15 per dozen), a pad of stickers (PhP 3 per pad) and  a plastic sheet of stickers (PhP 2.25 per sheet), fruttos candies, marshmallows and lollipops (PhP 120 for 5 packs from the Landmark in TriNoma), and…. that’s it!  We’re on a budget, remember? LOL :D

The CAKE…IMG_4164I guess for every Pinoy-children’s party,  Goldilocks cake doesn’t disappoint.  This choco-marble-flavored Spongebob- fishing-for-Jellyfishes-theme (less the Jelly fishes for they ran out of stock and were replaced with gold choco coins with my consent–didn’t I just tell you they don’t disappoint? LOL) :) was ordered 2 weeks ago at a branch near our place for PhP 855;  inclusive of the cake and the themed decor.  It’s a bit expensive for a low-key party but heck, what’s a themed party without a themed cake?

The FOOD…IMG_4136The party meal was prepared, cooked and packed by my wife, Tina (applause, applause!). The photo above doesn’t give justice to how the food tasted. Those breaded chicken fillets were deep fried to its crispiest; and the macaroni in beefy sweet tomato sauce was also a winner.  The kids loved it.

Did I do any cooking? Hmmm, I did slice the hotdogs into pieces and, believe it or not again, I cooked the gravy!  I just mixed flour in water, heated the pan with water, 3 chicken cubes, soy sauce and a bar of Anchor butter into boil and voila! - chicken gravy tasted better than Jollibee’s, LOL.  The kids loved it too!

The GIFTS…IMG_4173His classmates were sweetest to give presents. It’s a mutual thing between them. :D

The PARTY PEOPLE…IMG_4155….Children are a gift from the Lord!

Our smiles went up to our ears when we heard comments, “ang sarap!…, ang cute ng cake!… ang sarap ng food!”  from these kids.  You know children don’t tell lies :D

The BIRTHDAY BOY…IMG_4146

Our son’s birthday wish for a Spongebob Squarepants themed party was granted. Thanks to the mighty forces behind the successful simple event -myself and my wife :D

Seriously, we thank the Lord for His endearing Love and we can’t thank Him enough for blessing us with Gabby.

On our part, we always pray for Gabby to have a better health- away from any sickness and for him to be safe at all times.

Gabby :  (while on his facebook) Daddy, ano pong spelling ng THANK YOU?

Tatay-doc : :D

We love you Gabby!

:D What’s your fondest memory of your own kiddie party?Don’t you just miss being a kid?
