GELATISSIMO

Mocha Nut Crunch,  Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Macadamia = Instant happiness!

A world is lonely without ice cream, is it not?  It’s one of my comfort foods.  What about you?

During my recent week-long days off back home,  Tina, Gabby and I managed to dropped by our favorite malls in Makati and sampled a few flavors of gelato from Gelatissimo in Greenbelt 5.

With Gabby at the counter, I asked the crew of their bestsellers and one of them told me to try tasting first before making a choice.  Everything looked so delicious but we wanted to order 3 flavors only on their biggest cup; we eneded up enjoying various chocolate-flavored gelato.  It was like heaven in every scoop! :D

Look at Gabby’s smile with that cup of Italian gourmet ice cream; papasa bang endorser?  *paging Gelatissimo*

It was Tina and Gabby who already gave it a shot from their TriNoma Mall branch a few months ago and liked it from then on.

There’s Gelatissimo branch also here in Penang, located at Plaza Gurney in Gurney Drive but I refused the chance to sample it for I find it a bit costly and so does its Manila counterpart. I guess, indulgence always has a price.

Now, I’m craving for some ice cream. I wish I have vanilla on the fridge.

And you?

Have a great week ahead!  God bless.

TRICK OR TREAT 2010

One of the agonies of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) like me is being physically absent in those moments that are supposed to be shared with the entire family.
But thanks to modern technology, those memories can reach you in a blink.

my 6-year-old son, Gabby is second from right, geared up as a scarecrow

This morning, my loving wifey, Tina immediately posted photos of our kid, Gabby in her facebook account. The pictures were taken from Gabby’s preschool Halloween Party.

She told me that they woke up at 5 in the morning, set up Gabby’s make up and dressed him up to the part for the 8AM kiddie party.

so there were ninja, pocahontas, glam girl, Gabby as scarecrow and lady vampire at Twinkle Toes Academy Inc. preschool Halloween Party 2010

And guess who won MOST CREATIVE HALLOWEEN COSTUME AWARD?

PANALO !!! Gabby with his preschool teachers, Teacher Ofie (Nursery) and Teacher Janet (Prep); not in photo Teacher Claire (Kinder)

Of course, GABBY!  He’s been winning it for 2 years in a row!

Last year, he was the coolest Ninja…

Even Mr. Edu Manzano commented, “You look good!” 3x when we spotted him at Greenbelt 5 last year.

Can’t blame the guy; my son’s really cute, right? he he he :D

Way to go, Tina+Gabby!

Victory Party at 711? LOL!

I love you so much! Miss you!

See you in a month and half time here in Penang!

OUR PLATES LAST WEEKEND

FRIDAY –After my office handed me my passport+visa and allowances, I went to SM Megamall to buy things that I’ll need for my month-long training in Tokyo.  Before shopping, I had my late lunch alone…

Although Buco Pandan Shake, Max’s Fiesta Plate and Halo-halo literally filled my tummy, I still felt half empty without Tina+Gabby on the table with me. :(

That’s why last…

SATURDAY — As I tried my best to stretch our weekend family bonding 3 days before my trip, we found ourselves in this all-day-breakfast restaurant once more…

Gabby had that milkshake again; this time he tasted what they called BLACK  and WHITE… sarap!

(at Mr. Jones, the entire volume of their blender is served; excess on a canister)

I had to thank my wife for her suggestion to have our Saturday lunch at Mr. Jones again.:)

A relaxed and casual ambiance is coupled with great tasting food in huge servings at Mr. Jones. It was only our second time to dine there but we declared it’s officially included in the list of our favorites!

We started with a warm bowl of CLAM CHOWDER.

We usually favor thick soup and Mr. Jones’ Clam Chowder is otherwise; but since it’s so flavorful and creamy, we still give our two-thumbs up!

The first time we were there, Tina enjoyed Mac and Cheese.  Last Saturday, she opted to try another entree from the menu. She passed on the pasta choices and had FISH and CHIPS...

Surprisingly, it’s bland fish fillet but there’s always that salt and pepper on the table to spice it up a bit and its 3 dips of vinegar, mayo and ketchup also did the trick. It wasn’t that oily; was only OK for our taste.

I thought of ordering US BEEF RIBCAP & TAPA GARLIC OVERLOAD which I had last time (it’s one of the great-tasting tapa!) but opted to try SUPERMAN BURGER instead…

Did I like Mr. Jones 350 grams Superman Burger ?  It stimulated my palate so well; I was so overwhelmed!  The ham on top with caramelized onions is so tender and tasteful too!  This plate is another must-try from Mr. Jones.

We left our seats and went off from Mr. Jones with to-go of our leftovers; I told you, the servings are huge enough to share or for take-home.

For desserts, we had scoops of gelati from GELATONE!

It was nice to partake in their fund raising that afternoon to help out donate books via foundation to less fortunate kids. A portion of their income from 12noon to 4pm that Saturday for every scoop of gelato sold is given as donation. What a way to enjoy italian ice cream for a worthy cause.

We had Mango (for Gabby), Ferrero Rocher (for me) and Frutti de Bosco (for Tina).  Tina’s choice is my favorite from Gelatone; it’s a mixed berry-flavored sorbet.

Ms. Tess, the owner herself met us inside her resto and offered us free samples of freshly made Pistacchio gelato. She pointed out that there’s a lot difference in the taste of frozen gelato compared to the newly prepared one; the latter is tastier of course.

Kudos to Gelatone for being kid-friendly establishment! :)

Outside the store last Saturday, children’s books -in Filipino and English were sold at a discounted price due to the charity event. We bought Gabby 2 story books that he took home with a smile.

SUNDAY came and we headed off to church. It’s usual for our family to visit Antipolo Shrine (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage Cathedral) and hear mass before going on a trip.

Our late Sunday lunch was at Goldilocks, Sta Lucia East mall.(Yup, we went places last weekend–from Makati to Antipolo!). We had Halo-halo again ( isn’t it a staple every summer?) and some of our favorites…

Kare-Kare and Pancit Malabon…

Beef Kaldereta and Fresh Lumpia…

Thank you Lord, for all the blessings! :)

Next post hopefully, will be about you know where. *wink*

MONDAY : WE HAD BREAKFAST AT 3PM

Truth is, we went to Legazpi Village in Makati just across Greenbelt 5 to try a colleague’s suggestion –for us to subject Gabby to a VTR in a talent/modelling agency for TVC (read : TV commercials).  Oops, let me clear that out :  Gabby only had his photos taken and did a VTR; no casting calls yet, people! :D   Of course we’ll let you know if he’ll be doing something beyond ordinary. (Well, you know for Tina and I, he’ll always be our GREATEST KID!) We just took a chance; brought him in and we’re glad that our little boy liked it!  He told us he was asked in the VTR room to smile, turn right, then left, turn the camera and smile, state his name, school and age and smile again.  If there would be no calls for a go-see or whatnot, then there’s no harm, just plain fun! :D

After few more steps from the agency, Tina, Gabby and I with one of our friends found ourselves seated comfortably here…

Who says you cannot eat breakfast in the afternoon?  In Mr. Jones, some of our favorite morning starters are served all day! (Wala lang yatang tuyo, tinapa, danggit at itlog na pula’t kamatis, hehehe)

It was our first time to try Mr. Jones, a considerably newer food place  an upscale diner at Greenbelt 5 that’s  related  to Museum Cafe (also in Greenbelt), Chelsea Market Cafe (in Serendra) and Momo Cafe (Eastwood Mall and Robinson’s Place).  According to the wait staff, Mr. Jones serves breakfast-all-day beginning 11AM.

So at around 3PM, I was enjoying one of the most delicious TAPA in town…

U.S. BEEF RIBCAP “TAPA & GARLIC OVERLOAD” , Php 295+.  Servings in Mr. Jones are HUGE!  Sharing is inevitable! :D Take my word on it : it’s one of the yummiest breakfast plate I had :D The beef tapa were sliced as thin as bacon strips, so flavorful that it can still stimulate your palate sans vinegar and achara(pickled papaya)!  But the achara and a little-sweet vinegar also add up to the experience!  That tapa and garlic overload rests on a bed of garlic rice… Ahhhhhh…  ang SARAP!  :D

The eggs can be cooked the way-you-want. I asked the smiley waitress what’s best, and she recommended scrambled. Actually, I don’t mind whether it’s sunny-side-up or scrambled. But it seemed like the staff really knows their stuffs. :D

Surely, it deserves a second try on our future visits! It’s that good! :D

For our commercial model-to-be  cute kid, he enjoyed sipping heavenly milkshakes from a tall glass and a canister…

CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE, PhP 175+ This tasted like blended chocolate ice cream and we liked it! Gabby loved it.  What we liked about it? They serve you even the extra-blended shake in a canister if the glass is already full.  It felt like you had 2 for the price of 1. :D

Tina and our friend shared  a huge plate of….

MAC N CHEESE, PhP 350+. We noticed the use of 3 different pasta : rigatoni, penne and macaroni all fused into one dish; creamy and cheesy with bacon bits and mushroom.  It was OK but would not sky-rocket you to outer space. :(

Just look at the evidence that Mr. Jones’ Tapa and Garlic overload is really a must-try :

Whether Gabby will soon nail a bit player part in a TVC or NOT, we’re considering going back to Mr. Jones whenever possible if only for that tapa and to try their other breakfast-all-day menu! :D

EAT AND BE MERRY

IMG_4963It’s not our first time to dine at JOHN AND YOKO in Greenbelt 5, Makati City.  We’re also quite familiar with the other themed restaurants within its group of companies-  MR. KUROSAWA  Euro-Japanese in Eastwood Mall and SUMO SAM in Shangri la (and other) malls as we’ve tried them a few times already.

John and Yoko, Cosmopolitan Japanese almost appears (and tastes) like the other two mentioned food places which are all co-owned by the local celebrity, Marvin Agustin.  They all feature union of the East and the West from their modern ambiance to whatever is served on the plate.

The last time my wife, Tina, our preschooler son, Gabby and I ate there was a few months back.  I took pictures of what we enjoyed but unfortunately, I cluelessly pressed something on our cam that deleted every photos I had.  It taught me a lesson, big time!

Last Saturday, after few hours of trick or treating, Gabby was finally convinced  that we had to munch something as our late lunch before he continues with his Halloween event at Greenbelt.  Thankfully, he and his mom agreed on John and Yoko and I was too weak to resist. :D

It was our first time to try this dish last Saturday and we’re missing it already…

2JAPAELLA, PhP 378+.   One of Spain’s well-loved dishes was twisted anew with generous slices of chicken teriyaki, bite sized chorizos, my favorite prawns topped with nori strips. These ingredients rest on the most flavorful rice I’ve tested. Japaella also won my wife’s discriminating taste; we’re one in saying that we’ll definitely have this again next time we visit John and Yoko. Did I tell you it comes in enormous serving that’s good for 3 pax?  But since it was just perfect for our appetite; I don’t think Tina and I would share it with other friend/s or relative/s, LOL :D

Gabby ordered one of his staples…3EBI TEMPURA, PhP 368+ /5 pieces.  Our son nearly finished the entire plate!  He had 4 out 5 of those battered prawns. He must be so tired and hungry then or it must have been that delicious for him, or he just really favored it over other Japanese yummies on our table. But I know he also likes kani (crab).  He enjoys dipping them on tempura sauce.  As for my two-cents worth, it may not be the best tempura in town but heck, Gabby was satisfied so we like this too.

4IKA LINGUINI IN TOMATO CREAM SAUCE, PhP 228+.  This was my brother’s choice and because of its large serving, of course he had no choice but to share it with us. :D   Crunchy fried squid served as toppings in creamy pasta; not bad…but where’s the tomato?

5CHISAU RICE, PhP 208+.  Tina ordered this bowl of rice+mushroom+chicken and nori strips. As she puts it, “Masarap naman.” but you know now that she likes my order better than this. :D

6ICED TEA in BLUE (Dalandan), RED (Calamansi), GREEN (Lime), PhP 108+ each/refillable servings.  I like my glasses in BLUE and its flavor doesn’t disappoint.

FOOD : A bit pricey as expected of Japanese restaurant, but Japaella will keep us coming back. We also appreciate the use of (heavy) stone wares as plates and serving platters.

AMBIANCE :  Although we like its cozy, dim lights with black and white film of Akira Kurosawa being projected on one of its wall the last time we visited;  it’s a bothering thought that it can be so congested and a bit noisy during peak hours.

SERVICE : Now, allow me to be extra serious with this.  I certainly profess that this resto, along with SUMO SAM and MR. KUROSAWA  ULTIMATELY NEEDS IMPROVEMENT when it comes to this department.  Their wait staffs, although clad in sexy black uniforms, should attend vigorous trainings on PUBLIC RELATIONS and HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT.  Read : THEY’RE NOT SERVICE ORIENTED as they don’t offer smiles and are far from being family friendly compared to other restaurants of the same cuisine.

We waited for several minutes before they attended to our requests with no signs of being apologetic whatsoever.

I controlled my temper during and after we dined but it doesn’t mean I won’t blog  do anything about it.

WE ARE PAYING CUSTOMERS and DESERVE nothing but THE BEST SERVICE THAT ONE CAN OFFER. Gaano ba kamahal ang ngiti ngayon?  What’s with their 8% service charge if they’re not on their best foot during work?

Let me remind all the UNfriendly wait staffs of John and Yoko that other than the dishes on the menu, SERVICE COUNTS A LOT in restaurant business.

As I’ve stated on this free and unpaid advertisement for John and Yoko,  WE LIKE THEIR FOOD BUT PLEASE, they have TO IMPROVE SERVICE….They have to… It’s never too late for change before they lose customers who are supposed to BE VALUED.

Eating should always be a happy activity especially with family.  It shouldn’t be less interesting.

We will revisit this resto whenever possible not only to grab a spoonful of that Japaella again :o   but particularly because  I am STILL optimistic that they’ll change for the better.

TRICK OR TREATING 2009

Guess where we had fun the whole day today?

IMG_4924

The queue was apparently looooong but heck, we were there to wait for our son to be registered and got his coupons for the participating high-end shops’ Halloween goodies.

We woke up at around 6AM without electricity and less rain but with strong winds.  It was typhoon signal # 3 in Metro Manila since yesterday because Santi a.k.a. Mirinae had slammed via Quezon Province en route to Batangas thus hitting the capital and nearby provinces.  Thankfully, it weakened into a tropical storm this afternoon and allowed the streets to be dry and the sun to show up.

Like Christmas, Halloween is much anticipated fun-filled event especially by kids like our own.  Come hell, or high waters, it should be celebrated :D

Honestly, our 5-year-old son, Gabby initially wanted to wear his dream this Halloween. So weeks ago, his mom, Tina and I bought him a toque, an apron and a napkin as accessory for he wishes to be a chef someday.  But when Tina got him a face paint kit from Market, Market 2 days ago,  we decided for Gabby to wear his last year’s costume to his preschool party which was held yesterday morning, and to TRICK or TREATING today at a mall…

IMG_4956Grooming -hair and face-paint, by my lovely wife, Tina…

My youngest brother who reported to his work this morning somewhere in Makati texted me that it’s safe to go to Greenbelt 5 for there was no traffic and sky was getting clearer. So we didn’t waste time and headed off to G5.

SPOTTED :

4

We saw Mr. Edu Manzano at House of Obagi with someone who chose not to be photographed.  We really appreciated his efforts of posing for our son for few sec and even told Gabby, “You look good!” 3x!!!  - Now, I know Mr. Manzano’s sooo honest! :D

At  GREYONE SOCIAL  :   Ninjas alike!5

At  ZARA :  When Gabby approached their counter and handed in the coupon in exchange for their Halloween treats, the people of Zara were all smile at him.  They admired him and his costume so much. We like Zara and we love their staff at G5 even more! :D

6

At HIVE : This furniture and interiors store’s staffs were also welcoming. Thank you for being kind to kids! May your sales double up in the coming days…

78

At  YOH-GURT FROZ FRO-YO :  The yogurt that tops our favorites was one of the sponsors :D 910

We became excited when we saw Pepper Lunch’s banner at G5.  It’s high time for PL to sizzle it their way to Makati.  I wish they’ll have Quezon City branch too.  We’ve tried Pepper Lunch a few times already (and did some posts here) in Powerplant and Shangri la malls.  Incidentally, we also passed by a shop that also features PL owner’s (Chuvaness) shirt line Heather Miss Grey.

  IMG_4994IMG_4958

At CROCS : Gabby smiled when he saw clones of the slippers he’s wearing :D   …We also asked Gabby to pose near Rolex watch store that became a news item when it was robbed few days ago. It’s business as usual as if nothing happened.

1112

Then at half hour past one in the afternoon, we ate lunch at John and Yoko (I’ll post it soon).  After we chow down, we went to Glorietta to buy some supplies.

No tricks, just treats… trick or treat 2009

Sure, anyone can afford all these but not HAPPINESS that came with it. :D

Gabby’s SMILES and OUR FAMILY BONDING MOMENTS are simply priceless.

PS : Did I tell you that Gabby won the CUTEST KINDERGARTEN PUPIL award (note : not the scariest) in their preschool’s halloween party yesterday?  I cannot blame them; our son is really adorable :D

Did you go trick or treating too? :D   Happy Halloween!

NEGLIGENCE

I would like to apologize to myself and I hope I’ll accept it, LOL….

Today, we went to my son’s favorite stroll place, Ayala malls in Makati and had late lunch at around 1:20 PM at JOHN and YOKO, a restaurant in Greenbelt 5 that claims to be a fusion of the East and the West (having named after John Lennon and Yoko Ono).  It’s a Japanese resto with a twist – say one of their dishes is called JAPAELLA for example.

I was so excited to bring my wife Tina and son Gabby there for us to compare its difference from its sister-company, SUMO SAM which we’ve tried several times.   It was already past lunch time but the place was still packed, just a proof that food and service must be really good.  And one of my virtual friends,  Anne had strong recommendation for John and Yoko so there was no hesitation for us to try it.

When we’re guided to our seats by the waitress clad in gray collared uniform and a micro-mini skirt wearing high-heeled boots (whew!) and saw the ambience of purple and orange cozy lights despite the congestion of diners, we’re excited to order.

I chose my Sumo-sam favorite- Seafood omelet (which John and Yoko also has),  Tina had Beef Wagyu rice and Gabby had Kani Nori Tempura.  For our drinks, we had botomless iced teas in red (calamansi), green (lime) and blue (dalandan).

Then just before our orders were served, I already took nice shots of the plate, chopsticks and table napkin marked with the restaurant’s name and logo.  Ofcourse I also had pictures of our meal for blog posting then enjoyed the late lunch.

And did we like the food? Yes! Sarap.  Though a little pricey just like Sumo-Sam, and we had to wait for about 20 minutes and the wait staffs were not that smiley, appeared to me they got attitude -I don’t know, still we enjoyed what we ate. Yummy!

We walked through the entire Greenbelt malls, literally – from G5, G3, G2 and G1… also took photos of the lush greens amidst the malls and a chapel in a man-made lagoon… and suddenly the inevitable thing happened!

I ACCIDENTALLY DELETED ALL PHOTOS TAKEN  AND WAS LEFT WITH NOTHING!

I HONESTLY DIDN’T BREATHE FOR 3 SECONDS AND FELT I HAD MY MOST STUPID DAY EVER!

I was negligent not to click PROTECT on our digicam immediately after taking those shots.

To REGRET was the very FUTILE thing to do now.

It was such a lesson learned .

A thing charged to experience.

One for the books.

——————> C’mmon, blame me now.   I am guilty as charged. =(

ALIVE, ALIVE!

We thanked the Lord this Sunday morning at the Chapel of Sto. Nino Paz in Greenbelt, Ayala Center, Makati.
img_4409

Then few steps from the chapel is Greenbelt 5 Fashion Walk where the exhibit of photographer Mark Nicdao called Alive was held. Although it looked like that his photo show is over, but since it’s still there, we still got the chance to see it.
img_4398

Those black & white photos of local celebrities in more than 6 feet each were really amazing. Some photos really deserved a second or even a third look.

Phoemela Baranda is effortlessly sexy…
img_4404

Sarah Geronimo is blooming muse of her generation.
I can even hear her gorgeous voice echoes from her photo…
It’s simply surreal…
img_44061

My wife Tina was struck with Jake Cuenca’s photo.
His scar on his upper lip was clearly apparent, perhaps the photographer wanted to capture everything without pretentions…
img_4412

Ms. Tessa Prieto-Valdes in her element. Flamboyant but natural in her photo…
I like her when she said in one of her inteviews that she also goes to Baclaran & Divisoria for shopping..
img_4392

Regine Velasquez looks like a true goddess in her photo.
Aint no music note high enough for a venus-looking diva like Regine…
While Enchong Dee proves he’s in true athletic form as swimming is his second skin.
img_4401

KC Concepcion’s photos beside Jericho’s. Their photos exude emotions.
img_4400

Goma’s photo beside Regine’s…
img_4403

And my son Gabby was instructed by Tina to goof around Sarah G.’s photo as if he’s trying to win or at least kiss her. We wish!
img_4411

I confess that beside being a violinist or a chef, a lens-man’s work like that of Mark Nicdao is also one of my frustrations. If only I had not went through studying human life & diseases, I would have an Alive-like exhibit as well.
Dream on!
Everything happens for a reason.
Sigh.
At least I’m happy with what I’m doing. Really.

STRENGTH. BALANCE. PASSION according to Mr. Nicdao’s one man show will keep us all ALIVE.

COLOR ME NORI

It was the schedule for us to claim our personally painted ceramic now glazed after 10 days at Color Me Mine in Shangri-la mall. As we were amazed how our own ceramic art of a small candle holder was turned into a little masterpiece after being subjected to an oven kiln and glazing, we decided again to paint another ceramic; this time a cross between a bowl and a plate, and sat for more than 3 hours doing color application with brushes. Here are photos of our 2nd attempt at being “pottery-inclined artists”…

img_3644

img_3643

We’ll get the glazed and baked finished product on February 21st, and I’ll try to post here the difference of before-and-after thing…For now, here’s the BEFORE photo…

That was Gabby’s right hand imprint…

img_3645

Just prior to enjoying another ceramic painting, I brought Tina and Gabby to Sumo Sam japanese restaurant at the 6th level of Shangri-la mall for an early dinner. It was our 3rd time to eat there but nothing has changed since the 1st. What disappointed me was that I expected change of something from the menu, perhaps with the price to no avail. Or was it a plain and simple consequence for being headstrong to something?

img_3642

c

Taste of the food was really OK except that I think the menu was atrociously expensive compared to others which serve similar plates. I guess most who have tried dining at Sumo Sam will agree that other jap resto is far comparable but this one’s quite pricey. We haven’t tried eating at John and Yoko at Greenbelt 5, it’s Sumo Sam’s sister company for it’s also partly-owned by Marvin Agustin (yup, Jolina’s former reel partner). Do we have enough reasons to try it one day? Will it be any different from Sumo Sam ? Or only an upscale version? Anyway, here are what we munched at Sumo Sam, Shangri-la mall…

California rolls : yummy with kani shreds but pricey at PhP 218.

a

Seafood Omelet Rice : I so like jap rice but Sumo Sam’s costly at PhP 228.

e

Chicken Teriyaki : tender yes, but limited slices at PhP 228.

d

Green Iced Teas; bottomless at PhP 98 each. (heard that John & Yoko’s has also a BLUE ICED TEA)…

And a generous scoop of Ube Ice Cream requested by Gabby; served with cherry & whipped cream of which price was nearly a pint at PhP 88.

s

So will you try to bring yourself to Sumo Sam just as I did, Not twice but thrice?!!!
On the second thought…
