15 YEAR FLASHBACK AT DIN TAI FUNG

Catching up with someone whom you have not seen for several years is like watching again your favorite movie or TV show that you grew up with; it certainly brings back memories of the old days.

I’m glad I gave a nod to my college classmate’s invitation to meet her and her family in Singapore. And because my 4D3N trip was packed, I had to arrange the schedule and ask Rochel (or Rocel to us back in college; I didn’t know her name suffered from a glitch in birth certificate documentation) if it’s fine to have  an early dinner with them on my last day in the Lion City before I head back to Changi Airport to catch my 10:40PM flight back to Penang. She candidly agreed, so I met her and her husband at the facade of Raffles City Mall that sunny Sunday afternoon on mid-July. Meeting her after 1997 seemed like going through a time machine in a heart beat.

It actually felt like we’re back to one of our classrooms inside the Science Building or in the canteen of Far Eastern University in Manila (that we fondly called, Tayuman because we’re only provided then with cocktail tables less the seats, so we’re used to eat standing, hence we coined, Tayu-man!). Rochel and I were classmates from 1993 to 1997 when we’re taking up Bachelor of Science in Biology; we belonged to 2 different sets of friends (or in the Philippines, we call it barkada) -she’s with all-female-barkada who were all very studious in every sense of the word (I actually described her group to her husband as nerds to seriously mean their unparalleled devotion to studies, they’re mentally competitive!). We lost contact after graduation. It was only few months back that I found her on facebook.

It’s unbelievable how we squeezed 15 years in a casual and friendly dinner at Din Tai Fung. One thing’s sure -it’s always nice and easy to talk about those college days; everything sounded like they all happened just yesterday. Those were the years with less worries and almost no priority, at least for me.

Fifteen years went by and I heard nothing about Rochel. While waiting for our food, I did not expect that she would ask me about how studying Medicine was like. At that moment, I wasn’t sure whether she went to Med school or not; worse, I was clueless that Rochel became quite depressed soon after her father told her that her dream of becoming a doctor had to be shelve due to their financial difficulty back then.

I told Rochel, she never missed a thing.

She and her husband have been very blessed and they’re financially stable now in a country more progressive than one could imagine.

I think that’s all that matters.

We both believe that Lord has His ways of leading us to our own paths as we live our own lives.

And Rochel’s gratitude to God for everything that happened in her life is inspiring! :)

Not that I regret becoming a General Physician and a Lecturer of 8 years but going through Medical school robbed me of my social life -anyone who went through the same path could attest. Attending special occasions like birthdays, holiday celebrations and reunions like Christmas and New Year’s day were not always possible during those gruelling years in Medicine; it was books before anything else. A lot of things were sacrificed, tons of efforts were exerted. In my case, there were times that I felt I had studied enough but everything seemed like the lyrics of a James Ingram’s classic song, “I did my best but I guess my best wasn’t good enough!”. :) Days got even tougher when we’re having those unforgettable 24-36 hour duties in various private and public hospitals for 2 consecutive years (4th year in clerkship, and another year in completing Post-Graduate Medical Internship). It was all about efforts and sleepless nights in exchange of 2 letters added to your surname after graduation, plus a license after passing the board exams and registration. Nonetheless, if there’s one thing I am most thankful of my years in Medicine was the day I met my lovely wife (yeeehaaa!).

Some of Rochel’s bestfriends  even went to Residency or Post-Graduate trainings and became specialists. She continued sharing a piece of her life by relaying that during those times that most of our college batchmates and I were in Med School, she worked and earned money to send herself to study another field that offers a more lucrative career. She studied computers and all about Information Technology. She landed a job in the Lion City; made a beautiful family and the rest, as they say is history.

Cliche as it may sound but there are reasons for everything.

We have different fates.

We live different lives. :)

And everything is attributed to a cause greater than ourselves.

This is Rocel and her husband, Alvin. Rochel has been based in Singapore for 6 years now and the couple have been doing great on their jobs. They have one beautiful daughter, Audrey who was left at home with the nanny during our dinner. Despite my time was limited, our meeting was warmer than what we chow down! They gave me a paper bag with 4 bottles of Belacahan and Chinchalok Chilli sauces and even sent me recipes of how to use the sauces.  According to Rochel, she noted that my wife Tina, loves to cook. The gesture was really thoughtful!  Thanks for the dinner treat, guys! It was delicious! Hope to meet you again when my family and I get to visit Singapore again. :)

On a lighter note, here’s a run-down of what we savored on that early dinner at Din Tai Fung.

Rocel ordered Stir-fried Spinach with Garlic

*”A deceptively simple dish made with only premium young, tender shoots. Every batch of specially selected vegetables is almost identical in length and quality, and is cut with precision before being tossed in the wok with just a teaspoon of sunflower oil.”

She also had Fried Rice with Shrimps & Eggs 虾仁蛋饭

“*An extremely popular dish, the ingredients are pared down to simple rice, shrimps, eggs, and spring onions, creating a taste of familiar comfort. Each plate is of a certain weight and minimal seasoning is used so that the natural fragrance of the eggs and spring onions shines through.”

Rocel’s husband, Alvin simply had Beef Noodles

And as I sincerely trusted their taste, so I submitted myself to their choices for me to sample…

Truffle Xiao Long Bao 松露小笼包

*”A paragon of fine taste, an award-winning steamed dumplings laden with the finest truffles. Served only to foreign dignitaries and very special guests in Taiwan, bask in the fine aroma of truffles.”

Fried Rice with Fried Pork Chop

“*Munch away on this scrumptious dish of deeply marinated pork chop, which is deep-fried to perfection. The meat is juicy and tender, making for a wholesome gastronomic experience at Din Tai Fung.”

It’s fifteen years after graduation and I never expected a simple reunion would be in Singapore. Looking back, it’s a wonderful feeling that we passed those days of going through college and eating our food while standing in the canteen during recess and lunch breaks.

PS : I personally asked Rochel to review the draft of this blog post prior publishing in this site. I’m glad she gave me a green light and a happy note! Thank you so much, Rochel! May you and Alvin receive more blessings for you to continue to be a blessings to others!   :D

THE STATE OF BEING GRATEFUL

“The clinical definition of gratitude is the appreciation of what is valuable and meaningful to oneself; it is a general state of thankfulness and/or appreciation.” (sourced via NCBI)

I published this post NOT as a shameless self-promotion but to cultivate gratitude in more people.

OUR HONG KONG DISNEYLAND TRIP 2012 : LAST DAY HIGH

19 February 2012. Sunday. It was the last day of our 3D2N grand family vacation in Hong Kong Disneyland Park and Resort. And although we’re ecstatic with everything we had experienced in the Happiest Place On Earth, we tried to struggle a bit with fact that we’re leaving Hong Kong for our work place in Penang, Malaysia before dusk. It’s always hard to leave something so special that gave you many wonderful memories. Nontheless, we still had a day to enjoy so Tina, Gabby and I started our last morning in Hong Kong with ear-to-ear smiles.

Good Morning, Disney’s Hollywood Hotel !!! :)

From our room down to the lobby, we headed directly to Chef Mickey to have our buffet breakfast!

“Chef Mickey recalls the lavish Art Deco-styled studio commissaries of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Mickey decorations and various Disney characters in sketch form are found throughout the restaurant.” (via hongkongdisneyland.com)

Here’s the nice corner reserved for my family and me…

From the ceiling, fixtures, tiled walls and the spread, there’s a piece of Mickey Mouse to delight your senses!

It was Gabby who first noticed and told me, “Daddy, look at the plate, it looks like Mickey Mouse’s pants!”

Much ado about carbo-loading : My first plate had a crusty cheese bread, a delicate egg tart, sample of fruity and fluffy pastries and a piece of Winnie the Pooh banana cake. Of course, my morning would not be complete without a dose of coffee.

Who says pizza ain’t a morning meal? Gabby was wide-eyed when he spotted an all-cheese-thin-crust-pizza on the spread; he’s a purist when it comes to pizza thus, it’s his favorite!  I asked him, “Anak, do you want some?” Of course, I received an excited positive response! I got a few slices for him, added some hash browns molded into smileys; how cute! And the basic scrambled eggs and bacon with Mickey Mouse waffles spruced up with maple syrup, while our boy favored chocolate syrup!

One of my favorites that I found so good from Chef Mickey’s various offerings was those thin slices of smoked salmon! I paired it with fresh green salad which I topped with different kinds of cheeses, some bits of cold cuts and vinaigrette and my morning instantly became perfect!

Tina and Gabby were satisfied with the breakfast too. Why, there were cereals which is a staple for my wife and son; yoghurt and fresh tropical fruits too! There were also some Chinese favorites –choices of dim sum, noodles, congee and a lot more that we wished our stomachs can accomodate. :)

After filling our tummies from Chef Mickey, we got our luggage and bags, had an early check out at 10:30AM, deposited our bags (for free!) at the Left Luggage Service of the hotel and trooped to the Disney’s Hollywood Hotel garden.

For the nth time, I owe some brilliant observations from our 7-year-old-kid. After first noticing those Chef Mickey’s plates patterned after Mickey Mouse’s pants, he commented about the aisle at the garden has film strips! And so I took a snap…

Bright and beautiful foliage at the Disney’s Hollywood Hotel garden…

The colors of the blooms – both big and small were awe-inspiring!

Pretty, isn’t it? My mother would agree (read : she loves flowers while my wife prefers food!).

It must be the great climate. It must be…

Happy moments in Disney’s Hollywood Hotel were made of these…

So happy he became buoyant on cool air!

Then, at the back of those “Hollywood Hotel” signage is somewhat discreet walkway where vintage cars are parked, excellent for photo-ops. What is Hollywood without them anyway?

Now, here are the exhibits of our “not-our-car-photos”….

Gorgeous cadillac coupled with those lovely smiles…

We’re almost ready to leave the garden when Gabby was fascinated with this movie ticket booth…

Gabby was inspired to do role-playing with his mom. Tina as the movie-goer and Gabby sells the tickets. Guess who’s their director? Definitely, not me! I played the usual camera man; Gabby himself called the shots! And all the while we thought his mind’s already fixed in becoming a chef, hotelier and restaurateur in the future. He got other talents, baby! ;)

The moment came when he thought of dancing in the middle of a turntable-designed ground near the poolside. Elvis Presley songs were on air. He was then more of an entertainer with the grooves more than just an actor-director! haha! :D   (I captured all of his moves in photos which I will probably post on a separate entry soon).

Time to bid goodbye to Disney’s Hollywood Hotel. Thank you for that warm and family-friendly accomodation! :)

As we planned to collect our luggage from Disney’s Hollywood Hotel at around 3PM before heading to Hong Kong International Airport to catch our 5:45PM HK-KUL flight via Air Asia, we rode the resort’s free shuttle bus and went to Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Public Transport Interchange (PTI).

TRANSPORTATION IS ALSO WHIMSICAL AT HONG KONG DISNEYLAND!

Here are some info and tips on how to go about the MTR Disneyland Resort Line

Getting to and out the park is as easy as counting 1, 2 and 3. :)  From Hong Kong International Airport, one can opt to ride a bus, a car, a taxi cab or a train to reach Hong Kong Disneyland and vise-versa if you’re leaving the Happiest Place On Earth.

We’ve been to Hong Kong and Hong Kong Disneyland quite a few times already but we were always on a package tour (read : there’s a tourist bus that pick us up to and from the park) and we have not experienced riding that Mickey-Mouse-windowed train running on the MTR Disneyland Resort Line. And so we did not let the chance pass last month to enjoy such experience.

It’s always great to ask whenever you’re in doubt. So I went to the counter of the MTR Disneyland Resort Line to inquire how to go to Ting Chung via Sunny Bay. He instructed me to buy tickets from the machines located at the laterals of the station just before the turnstiles. He generously broke my bills into coins for the train ticket machines; very HKDL-friendly! :)

The ticket machines are touch screens; you need to identify and press the point of your origin before you touch the point of your final destination. Say for example, touch first Hong Kong Disneyland Resort then Tung Chung. The ticket price for adult and kids are different but the machine monitor will show the amount per person and you just need to press the total pax (e.g. 3 adults, 1 kid).  Et voila, you collect the tickets to be inserted (or swipe if it’s loadable) on the turnstiles!

Convenience meets Fantasy.

That’s my first impression on Disneyland Resort Train Station.

It made me wish that all train stations around the globe would be as neat and pretty as this.

“Travel on the railway network of MTR and interchange for the Disneyland Resort Line at Sunny Bay Station.

  • Only 23 minutes from the Hong Kong International Airport, MTR Airport station,
  • 30 minutes from MTR Kowloons tation and
  • 33 minutes from MTR Hong Kong station where Guests can pick up  Park Tickets too!
Operating Hours between Sunny Bay and Disneyland Resort Station
From Sunny Bay: from 6:15am – 12:45am the following day From Disneyland Resort Station: from 6:20am – 12:40am the following day
Frequency 4 – 10 minutes.” (-via hongkongdisneyland.com)

Just wonderful. :)

And at an instant, we fell in love with the train! Those train handles are one of the many reasons why one should visit and experience Hong Kong Disneyland! :)

Among the many train couches, we were lucky to randomly seated near that Mickey Mouse bronze statue.

There’s Tink’s and many other Disney characters immortalized in bronze enclosed in capsules.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort line runs until Sunny Bay. From here, you wait and take other trains that will take you to your destination.

Doing the “tourist thing” at Sunny Bay Station….

Now, where did we go and what did we do after Sunny Bay would have to be posted next!

With that, I’d like to thank the people who made our Hong Kong Disneyland trip very memorable and fun-filled!  Thank you to Jaclyn, Nicole, Catherine and Purple –you guys are the BEST!

Thank you to my fellow Filipino bloggers and their families and friends who were nice companions on this trip -Gael of The Pinay Solo Backpacker, Thammie of ThammieSy.com, Leslie of Shoot First Eat Later, Laureen Uy of Break My Style, and Kyrz of KyrzUy.com.

Last but not certainly not the least, THANK YOU SO MUCH to HONG KONG DISNEYLAND for being the venue of our FAMILY bonding, offering more than expected delicious FOOD and providing us never-ending FUN!

In so many ways, this Hong Kong Disneyland vacation was truly an exceptional one!

Whether it was our first time or we’ve been to the park and hotels several times over, reasons are beyond words to go back and revisit the Happiest Place on Earth!

Let this last set of my photos speak of those remarkable reasons why WE SO LOVE HONG KONG DISNEYLAND!

As Shakespeare had put it, “Parting is such a sweet sorrow.”

It was an enormous blessing that we got a chance to revisit Hong Kong Disneyland and experienced family bonding, food and fun beyond our great expectations!

Thank you so much, our dear God!

Thank you so much, Hong Kong Disneyland!

Till we meet again, Mickey Mouse! ;)

IT’S HER DAY!

We seriously miss cakes from Red Ribbon, Bizu, Goldilocks and Conti's but Secret Recipe's fill the emptiness somehow, hehe!

Last Sunday afternoon, I traveled and was out for almost 5 hours from home and back just to buy some ingredients and bring home a box of cake.  Despite hassles in the trips via buses and ferry, I was nonetheless successful.

I wrote the spelling of our names correctly of course, before I handed in the small sheet of paper to the Malaysian lady at the counter for her to decorate on the cake. I also checked it before leaving  the shop but perhaps, my eyes really do have error of refraction because when Tina opened the box at home, she instantly noticed Gabby’s name was mispelled as DABBY. It made her laugh though. :)

Chocolate Indulgence : our favorite from Secret Recipe -bar none!

I made sure that our little surprises for Tina’s big day that fell on a Wednesday were already at hand 3 days prior. We didn’t plan to be absent from work but it happened.  On the morning of her birthday, she didn’t feel well and can’t go up to report to work (blame her Vertigo again). I cannot leave her alone at home thus, I decided not to go to work too (anyway, I had no class schedules); so did Gabby for his school.

It tastes better than it looks!

Gabby became excited to safely use my favorite kitchen gadget, the peeler with one long carrot. Together, we prepared and cooked our own version of Seafood Marinara with only mushrooms, diced carrots, onions, a kilo of prawns and a kilo of scallops! Sarap! :)

Tina cooked Pasta Carbonara last September on my birthday, and last October on Gabby's. Now, we had roasted garlic and parmesan tomato-based sauce for our own version of Seafood Marina! :)

Thank you for everything, honey and I’m sorry for my shortcoming.  Gabby and I love you so much!

Thank you so much, Lord for giving her to me and Gabby!  She’s one of Your greatest blessings to our family! :)

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

SOMETHING ABOUT THANK YOU

Feeding the ego or lauding the soul? Either way, I know perception is relative. I’m posting these compiled proofs of GRATITUDE because I’M PROUD not of their praises but of the fact that GRATEFULNESS still EXISTS in this age when almost everything is digital, wireless or remotely controlled.

Chatty's one of my former Filipino Nursing students, registered and currently enjoying her life in Europe. She's one of my most intelligent students; her class was a gem!

Appreciation, if freely given makes you happy, definitely!

Eric's also a former Filipino Nursing student, now licensed and is into traveling and photography. He's one of my most responsible and behaved male students (at least on my class); others were notorious.

In whatever form, expressions of THANK YOU always leave a healthy scar on the heart. :)

Hannah's one of my Malaysian PreMed students who's now in Galway, Ireland studying Medicine in one of those schools affiliated with my current work place.

On a much lighter note, even CELEBRITIES know how to say THANK YOU to anonymous soul like me.

Exhibit A : Jim Paredes of the ever famous Filipino singing group APO, replied to my email when I asked him about schedules of his photography class in Patis Tesoro’s garden cafe in Quezon after Christmas (I got a negative response but made me smile ear to ear!)….

Exhibit B :  Immediately after watching The Kitchen Musical on AXN (musical TV series presently being shown all over Asia where Filipino artists are featured with no less than Gerard Salonga as musical director and arranger), I tweeted Karylle Tatlong Hari (the star of the show and daughter of Zsazsa Padilla) and she INSTANTLY sent me DM!  *kilig*

Exhibit C : A simple appreciation of my unsolicited advice in one of CVS’ well-read posts. Those words were short but totally spoke of acknowledgment.

I therefore conclude, GRATITUDE is the BEST ATTITUDE!

When did you last utter the words, THANK YOU?

What were your most memorable recognition or acts of gratefulness?

Me? The mere fact that my family and I are waking up every morning is more than enough to be thankful for!

Thank you to those people who are appreciative.  Sana huwag kayo maging extinct! :)

ON MY 86TH DAY

It has been nearly 3 months since I’ve left Pinas for work here in Penang and I can say that I have adjusted already;  hmm, well, almost. :)

I have embraced the fact of being exposed to diversity of cultures, religions, colors, foods, public transpo (including taking a 15-min ferry ride just to enjoy weekend at the Island) and to anything you can think of.

There are a bit unexpected hassles in between but what matters most to me are the things to be grateful for.

I’d like to say Terima Kasih / Thank You / Maraming Salamat  to :

  • my employers who have been so warm and humble in welcoming us to their office and to their community.  We’re blessed to work with the most approachable, down-to-earth and goal-and-people-oriented bosses. :)
  • my Filipino colleagues : the 23 other MD-lecturers who continuously and tirelessly exert efforts in trying to lighten up our daily moods amidst our individual homesickness, personal concerns and other issues. I am so fortunate to have met all of you and it’s indeed a great pleasure to be working with you.  Special thanks goes out to my 4 housemates –docAlvin, docCarlo, docDante and docRonnie; you guys have been naughty and nice! he he he… :)
  • our PreMed and Med students who mostly are government scholars; may your dreams of becoming physicians someday come true with your dedication to your studies. :)
  • to the lady who facilitated things for us from the day we got interviewed in Makati to orienting us to bits and pieces about Penang, our work site and whatnot, you know who you are--Maraming Salamat! :)
  • and of course to my loving wife, Tina and our bundle of joy, Gabby, Thank you so much for everything. I know it isn’t easy raising Gabby alone despite my remittances, but honey, you’ve been doing a great job too for our family. I miss you+Gabby, ILOVEYOUSOMUCH! See you here in Penang on December 11.
  • to the few readers of this blog who have been following my adventures from Manila to Penang, thank you po!
  • All glory and praises to our Lord and Savior, we cannot thank You enough!  We love You so. :)

What are you grateful for this weekend?

Have a blessed new week, everyone! :)

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS

Last week, my wife, Tina along with her colleagues paid another co-worker a visit at her hospital bed.  One of her fellow clinical instructors has been fighting Breast Cancer and its complications for several years and is now admitted because of her terminal condition.  The sight, according to Tina was unbearable.

At lunch time yesterday, my wife informed me via text that she and her colleague will drop by a Pediatric I.C.U.  after their work to visit another sick patient.  This time,  it’s a 2-month-old baby of  her colleague, who was admitted for several Congenital Heart Defects.

When she came home early evening, Tina described how she felt upon seeing the infant.  Being a nurse , she understands the pathology but as a mother, she was deeply affected by the condition of the baby.

We were talking over dinner last night how grateful we are to the Lord, that despite our own problems and struggles, Gabby, Tina and I remain healthy and hopeful.

11,680 MORNINGS and counting…

On Thursday next week, September 18, I’ll be turning 32.  It has been 32 years of existence and counting. And I must admit a lot of blessings came in inspite of few hassles in between, nevertheless, LIFE has been challenging, fulfilling, and happy.

I thank God for giving me 11,680 mornings.  Waking up daily is a  blessing indeed.

My wife Cristina and our son Gabby are more than enough reasons to wake up every morning.

I thank God for giving me a family who supports me come what may.

Last year, I blogged 31 things to be grateful of, this time I’d like to share 32 facts about me, from infos to simple things I enjoy,  my plans in the next 10 – 20 years (wishing that I’m still celebrating Life then) to whatever makes me happy and few of my petpeeves.

1.  I was born September 18, 1976, at 1:40 PM in St. Luke’s Hospital,  QC;  I’m the  eldest of 4 sons of Ruben & Tessie.

2. I grew up in Pasig and went to school in Marikina until I finished High School.  My life then revolved in home-school-home routine.  It was a happy childhood.  Everything was provided, life was never dull nor grandiose.  I was consistent in the top 10 list of acamedic achievers every quarter from nursery to high school. There were a lot more brilliant students than I am but it was fun to look back that schooling has trained me to be competitive with myself first rather than to race with others.

3. I took up BS Biology in FEU, Manila and enjoyed schooling even more.  I met classmates whom I kept as friends for years now since 1993.  They’ve become my son’s godparents,  and have extended their friendship to my own family.

4.  I never planned of becoming a doctor.  Just before graduating from college, I became aware that my course would only offer jobs in pharmaceutical companies, research and teaching (which I am doing now). And so I forced myself then to go to med school. What med school gave me was not only a degree but a wife.

5.  I met Tina after engaging in ANONYMOUS TEXTING for one whole year. She is a sister of my classmate in med school who browsed her Ate Bibs’ mobile for a textmate whom she forwarded mushy messages.  Unknowingly, she was already taking Medicine in the same school where I and her Ate Bibs were enrolled.

6. Our first date was in October 2000 .  We met in LRT station in Cubao QC, and went to Makati.  We first went to Starbucks in Glorietta, saw movie – a suspense horror film (what a movie for a first date) which starred Michelle Pfeiffer entitled WHAT LIES BENEATH and dined at OUTBACK restaurant also in Glorietta.

7.  Since our friendship then started on texting, I also texted her to asked if we can “bring it to the next level”. And the rest as they say is history… Now, she’s my  EX-GIRLFRIEND for she’s married to me for four years now.     *_*

8.  I and Tina were both 27 years old when we got married.  Makati has been a favorite place so we decided to tie the knot at Sanctuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park Makati.  We both fell in love with the church as we first saw it together with my family years before we decided to wed.

9.  We went to Bangkok, Thailand for our honeymoon.

10.  Ten months after honeymoon, we had Gabby.

11. Two days after Gabby was delivered at St. Luke’s, immediately after I brought Tina and our little bundle of joy home, I had a teaching demo in Southeast Asian College.  Having a baby brought another blessing, the moment gave me my first job which I am keeping for four years now.

12.  I also land a job in review centers, one I kept for a year which sent me to their provincial branches- Roxas City in Capiz and in San Fernando Pampanga.  I was also invited as a guest local-board reviewer in a nursing school for 2 consecutive weekends.  But my job as Medical-Surgical Nursing lecturer soared to the seventh heavens when I landed a job in ALLGEN the Intelligent Review.  It’s fulfilling to help people to achieve their goals, inspire and encourage them somehow to exert efforts and to work with the most approachable, friendly, people-loving work staff I’ve met so far.

13. I LOVE  MARKS and SPENCER… their SILK TIES, LONG SLEEVE SHIRTS ….(size 17 please, hehehe)…

14. I LOVE  STARBUCKS, DARK CHOCOLATES, FLOSS of BREADTALK..CHINESE FOOD especially DIM SUM ( especially shrimp cheong fan, hakao, siopao, siomai),  I also like VIETNAMESE SPRING ROLLS…  I also like ITALIAN FOOD particularly  pasta with PESTO and PIZZA! Hmmmmmm…..

15. I LOVE TRAVELING ! I and my family have been to few countries - USA (from LA, San Diego, San Francisco in California and Las Vegas in Nevada), Hong Kong, Bangkok Thailand, Auckland New Zealand. We also had toured Bendar Seri Begawan in Brunei and had 2 stopovers in Brisbane Airport in Australia.  I also wish to go back to these places someday and to travel to other parts of Asia and the rest of the globe.

16.  I LOVE TO SAY “THANK YOUs” I appreciate comments, testimonials here that show gratitude and achievements of my reviewees and students. May those messages inspire others to do more with everything.  NOT ALL PEOPLE  know how to SAY THANK YOU, so it really brightens my day to receive simple messages that show gratefulness.  I am a person who knows the importance of being thankful to anyone regardless of the extent of contribution to my daily life – from those simple cab drivers who do not select passengers to employers like those of ALLGEN who really VALUE PEOPLE.

 17. I like Grey’s Anatomy, the Amazing Race, LOST, Prison Break, ER, nip tuck… Locally, my entire family is a member of TEAM  KAPAMILYA hehehe..

18. I like wearing neck ties at work, especially from MARKS and SPENCER (did I just state it again that it’s my favorite store?).  My ties make me happy whenever I see them hanging on my wardrobe. I even personally wash and keep them.

19.  My ultimate earthly dream is to experience EUROPE.  I need to have photos taken with my family at the foot of Eiffel tower in Paris, to ride the gondola in the water streets of Venice, to hear mass and to see the Holy Pope at St. Peter’s Basilica, to visit the LOUVRE museum, to watch musicales in London, to ride the bullet train and cross one city to the other.   I’ll probably cry literally in bliss if these will all happen.

20. The colors of the rainbow do not have my favorite shade. I like BLACK a lot even if it’s not an actual color per se, for it is the result when all the shades are combined.

21. I HATE the HEAT ! I am probably one of those very few people who HATE SUMMER. I cannot stand the heat of summer. I become most furious when it’s hot.

22. That will make you conclude that I like it when it rains. I mean just the drizzle, not storms. And being disgusted with the HOT WEATHER is also one of the reasons why I and my family would like to migrate abroad, not only to work and save but for a change of environment.

23. I cannot imagine a world without ICE CREAM.  It can make my day, I’m that simple.  I like any ice cream with chocolates; if it’s only a sundae, definitely with caramel!

24.  We have to squeeze our budget but we eat a lot. My wife and I are patrons of  Saisaki,Dads and Kamayan ULTIMATE BUFFET in Glorietta,  Flavors of China in Morato, Le Ching in Greenhills and Trinoma,  World Chicken (we’re addict of their ranch sauce in their boneless grilled chicken) in Trinoma and Glorietta. I also like cakes of BIZU.

25. It’s peculiar for most couples that the husband handles the budget, but not to us.

26. We both aspire to work abroad and save and go back here to settle until we’re old and gray.

27.  I and Tina would like to own a property someday in Tagaytay.  To build a house  there in God’s time, with contemporary Asian theme, a lush garden of greens and blooms, with a small pond of kois would probably make our future mornings surreal.

28. Just like every man’s dream, I hope to build on our savings. I would love to wake up on my future mornings with no worries on expenses, bills and the like.

29.  I and Tina and Gabby would like to put up a foundation someday. It would happen, I’m sure if we’re financially stable and content. We both love to share to others whatever help we can extend. However, we would want to better ourselves first before reaching out to others.

30. I take pride in producing students and reviewees who strive hard to achieve their goals. It’s a euphoric feeling everytime a former student informs me that he/she already made it to local/foreign boards.

31.  My greatest achievement as a mentor to date is having my wife passed her NCLEX-RN for California last July as she sat in my review classess in Allgen few weeks before her exam.  I’m proud of her.  I saw her efforts and knew what she sacrificed for her success in that exam.  I am also proud educator of students who exceeded their expectations out of their sleepless nights of studying. I am always proud to be a part of success of nurses Aynne Taguba who made it to 6th place in June 2007 NLE and Astrobal Silverio, SACI’s first cum laude, batch 2008. And the numerous NLE and NCLEX-RN passers who became my students and reviewees. Congratulations to them, I’ll be forever proud of these people.

32.  I and Tina would like to continue raising Gabby (who will turn 4 years old this October 5th) as God-fearing, respectful son. He may not be the best student as of now but at least he enjoys his lessons and schooling entirely for he’s always excited every morning to attend his classes.  He may take whatever course he wishes to but not anything that will require him to wear white – not of nursing and medicine.  If he wants to wear white in his future profession, we would appreciate but not force him to, if he’ll be the next Wolfgang Puck.

I am always dead tired at the end of each day but the moment I see Gabby as I come home from work, I see more than enough reason to continue to wake up every morning and make the most out of it.

Thank you Lord Jesus for the 32 years (and counting).

ASTRO’S DINNER TREAT

My wife and I were invited by Astro (SACI/UDMC’s 1st cum laude, BSN graduate 2008)  a few weeks back to dine with some of his closest friends for a post-graduation celebration of his victory in his college years.  Due to their board exam review schedule, the dinner was postponed to a later date (April 10 instead of April 02).

With us were Nicole & Carlo, Kristel & Ado who are also our former nursing students, now reviewing for the local boards come June 1, & 2.

They have chosen  Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

a quiet cozy steak and seafood restaurant located at the 2/F of Greenbelt 3.

made even more relaxing with dim lights coupled with good food with tag lines written not only on their menu but even on their soy dishes as  eat oysters, love longer.

I surrendered to my wife’s choice of plate to eat. We both ordered roast beef served with mashed potato. For appetizers, they ordered buffalo wings and a certain salad with honey-tasting dressing.  Our host and his friends ordered steak served with seasoned rice for their main dishes.

Kristel and Nicole were so sweet to walk from Greenbelt to Glorietta just to buy Astro and my wife Tina bouquets of flowers.

Thanks Astro ! And thank you Kristel, Ado, Carlo and Nicole for being courteous and grateful as you used to be in classroom. May God bless you with licenses and success in all of your endeavors.

Here are our photos – proofs that we all enjoyed that evening…

GRATITUDE

For the past seven semesters that I am working as a lecturer of Medical-Surgical Nursing, I am not into attending graduation rites that the school conducts annually.  But for the mere reason that with this year’s batch, I handled fourteen sections and most graduates with special honors are my former students, I and my wife decided to attend the event. We thought it would be a new experience for us to attend graduation ceremonies as faculty members and not as students anymore.

Two weeks before the event, we shopped for something to wear. Both of us knew that we owe it to ourselves as young professionals and educators to properly dress, especially in front of parents of our students. We have to look the part.  And so I bought my blue shirt and pink tie at (wherelse but) my fave Marks & Spencer,  a new suit from a common department store in makati, the same with my wife’s purple shantung blouse and to complete the look, I bought her a new pair of earrings and a brooch to match. Needless to say, I for one, became a bit excited to attend.

Then I received a text message from Astro, a former MS-N student that “he made it”.  Because I was in the middle of a lecture-class at that time, I didn’t think of it as “he made it to graduate with HONORS” so I replied to him casually, as “congratz, I know you deserve it.”  When he and his batchmates confirmed the good news, there were more than enough reasons to attend the ceremony. I told myself that COME HELL or HIGH WATERS, I and my wife have to be there to witness the event. And so we did.

                         Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Bearing with the delays of the event, we waited patiently. And I tell you, it’s worth the wait.  I was called to attend to a mother of a graduate who became unconscious probably if not for hypoglycemia; it could be due to electrolyte imbalance. I attended to her three times going up and down the stairs of the plennary hall. After learning that the clinic of the venue was closed already and  there’s no paramedic ambulance  stand-by,  I requested the security  officers to provide the patient a wheelchair and a vehicle for I wanted her to be brought to the nearest E.R. for proper observation and management.

                         Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Then I saw AYNNE TAGUBA, RN who was last June 2007  6th placer in the Nursing Licensure Examination (as I already blogged about her before, she was also a former student.)  She was invited by the school to grace the event for she was given another recognition of her achievements in boards.

I had a chance to have a photo taken with her… It was another rare opportunity for me that I became a FANATIC of my students’ achievements.

After those paramedic acts and photo-op with Aynne, it was high time to listen to Astro’s  address.

It was SIMPLY HEART-WARMING, very INTIMATE and personal speech.  We were all  sympathetic with all of his words. He mentioned about his ups and downs as a student. Truly INSPIRING not only to his fellow graduates but even to us his mentors.

I never thought i will receive such an APPLAUSE in PICC, no less, from my students of batch 2008, my colleagues, parents and guests who all listened to the cum laude’s speech.  I stood up for few seconds (or a couple of minutes) to acknowledge the GRATEFULNESS of a a former student whose HUMILITY remained INTACT with his SUCCESS.  IT WAS PURE GRATITUDE IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD.

         It was  OVERWHELMING, UNEXPLAINABLE, EUPHORIC,

                        UNFORGETTABLE  EXPERIENCE.

Astro Silverio, a BS Nursing graduate & the  very 1st Cum Laude of Southeast Asian College showed his utmost respect and gratefulness to the author of this blog.

“There is no elevator to success.  You have to take the stairs”

MY GRADUATION SPEECH, March 13, 2008, PICC

      Astrobal Joaquin Silverio, BSN 421

Southeast Asian College, Inc. Quezon City Philippines

While I was reading the biography of Dr. Dennis Waitley one day before I prepared this speech, I was inspired by one of his quotations. Dr. Dennis Waitley is one of the most sought-after keynote speakers in the world today as well as one of America’s most respected authors. The quotation says “the winners in life think constantly in terms of ‘I can, I will and I am’. Losers, on the other hand, concentrate their waking thoughts on what they should have or would have done, or what they can not do”. I myself had been a loser for several times. But through losing, I had learned that there’s always a room for trying; that I should never give up; that I should stand up again if I fall.

To our honored Guest Speaker, Mr. Nilo L. Rosas, Commissioner of the Professional Regulations Commission; to the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Peter P. Laurel; to the Vice Chairman of the Board, Mr. Rodolfo S. Ibuna; to the Executive Vice President, Mrs.Edita F. Enatsu; to the Consultant for Academic Affairs, Dr. Eduardo Gutierrez-Ong; to the Consultant for College of Nursing, Dr. Asuncion Enriquez; to the Dean of the College of Nursing and School of Midwifery, Mrs. Delia Tan; to the Administrative Officer and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Mrs. Miramar Garcia; to the Dean of the College of Radiologic Technology, Dr. Fortunato Gabon; to the Dean of Education, Dr. Mariquita Mendoza; to the School Registrar, Mrs. Minda Gnilo; to all other school officials; to the Professors and Clinical Instructors, to the members of the faculty, to the parents who are here today, my fellow graduates, Good Afternoon.

When I started my journey in Southeast Asian College 4 years ago, I never expected that I would be standing here in front of you today. It is so heart-warming to see you guys all wearing your graduation toga with your parents who, I’m sure, are very proud of you.

The road we have taken to arrive at where we are today was riddled with bumps, U-turns, road blocks, and other seemingly insurmountable obstacles. (A famous writer called this ‘the road less traveled’).But, with the constant support of our inspiring teachers, the love and patience of our beloved families, and the strength that came from the friendships we have forged at this Institution, we all survived and now stand proud this afternoon/evening. We are the graduating class of 2008. We are the survivors. We are the winners.

But how do we really measure success?

Let me tell you a story from my life when I made one of my biggest mistakes.

It was in the late 90’s. I was then a freshman at Saint Louis University Baguio City taking up AB Mass Communications. Due to my thoughtless and childish desire ‘to discover the world’, I decided to leave the school. I gave up my dreams, my parents’ dreams, and went on a purposeless adventure. I went to Manila without any plans, without prospects. In other words, with nothing in mind and worse, with an empty hand. I wandered aimlessly like a moth attracted to the bright lights of the Metro. I transferred from one flare to another, trying my best to survive and pretending that I was content with what I had achieved and become. My life then was a hopeless case. I was lost…Then I woke up one morning and realized that my life is going nowhere, that I was at a dead end. So I asked myself “What am I doing with my life? Will this storm of hopelessness end? Will the bright sun shine on me again?” I paused for a reply. I looked above and I saw the clouds’ silver lining. I realized that behind those clouds, the sun is still shining. (Did you get what I mean?) Yes, you are right…THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE…

So instead of wallowing in self-pity, I decided to take action—I stood up from where I had fallen and took the first step towards my future.

The beginning of my new life started four years ago when I enrolled at Southeast Asian College with a strong desire to achieve something. I brought with me my sense of optimism and aspiration to succeed. I broke free from the convergence of failures and frustrations. I said to myself “This time, I will be a winner.”

I must say that what I had achieved now did not come easy. It’s a product of hardwork, determination, sacrifice, discipline, and a strong faith in God. As an unknown author once wrote “There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.” What this author was trying to say is that when it comes to success, there are no shortcuts. In my four years in college, it seemed that the elevator to success was not an option; and, I had no choice but to take the twisting flights of stairs. Slowly… Step by step…

And so, here I am now, standing before you with a vision of a bright new future ahead of me…

TO the Batch of 2008, I pose a challenge. As we go about achieving our goals, perhaps likely ending up working in foreign lands, let us not forget to give back to our families, and to our country. Let us never forget our roots, where we came from. Let us always remember the true essence of Nursing—CARING, SERVICE, COMMITMENT.

As I have said, it took a lot of hard work and dedication for me to get to this point today, but I would not be sleeping well tonight if I took all the credit. So I would like to acknowledge all the important persons who contributed extensively to this achievement. First and foremost, I would like to thank the good Lord above, for giving me the gift of wisdom and for guiding me to use this wisdom rationally. To my parents, although they are not here today, thank you for your acceptance. Your unconditional love made me believe that even in the midst of darkness, there’s always a glimpse of light. That light was the light that guided me when I was lost. I know you are proud of me. To my sisters and to my little brother, who is celebrating his birthday today, thank you for dreaming with me. Today marks the beginning of the achievement of our mutual dreams. To my star (you know who you are). Thank you for your helping hand. As I traveled through the stormy seas, it was you who put up the sail on my boat. You gave me direction. I will never forget you.

To the Professors and Clinical Instructors who educated me, to the Course Audit Team, to my mentors, thank you for touching my life and empowering me to be more successful in life.

I would also like to take this opportunity to personally express my gratitude and acknowledgement to this one professor who has contributed significantly to my success. Due to his devotion to his profession, he has inspired and challenged me to study harder. Because of him, I’ve learned the real meaning of hard work and sacrifice. He taught me how to become disciplined.

I would like to acknowledge the contributions of

                                       Dr. Angelo Nino Santos

not only to me but to all other students whom he had handled. Thank you very much, Dr. Santos….I will always look up to you, sir. Your teachings, both in Nursing and in life, will always be remembered by those students whom you had inspired.

To BSN 421 and to my closest friends- Kristel dela Paz, Nicolle Daoa, Lea Serrano, Adonis Novales, Carlo Jeffrey Juan and Aaron Alpha Ramos, thank you for making my life easier. Thank you for the laughter. Thank you for making me feel younger everytime I’m with you. I will surely miss you guys. You will always remain here… deep inside here…

To those who believed in me, thank you so much. To those who did not, believe in yourselves. It is the foundation of trust.

Last but not the least; I would like to thank my alma mater for helping me build my dreams and for assisting me to achieve those dreams as well. According to the Administration, I am the first ever Cum Laude of SACI. You might be asking why. Based on my experience, it was very difficult to obtain this Latin Honor in this Institution. It’s what they call ‘the survival of the fittest’! I survived. And because of that, I made history. However, I don’t want to be remembered for that, but rather, I want to be remembered as an inspiration to all those who know me. Through hard work, discipline, and dedication, and by the grace of God, you can reach for the stars and, though you may fall short at times, never give up on your dreams. My wish for all is for everyone to enjoy a happy and successful life, one that is made more meaningful through the use of your talents in the service of your family, your country, and those who need them the most.

Thank you very much. Good evening..

HALAGA
