A VISIT TO ORPHANAGES IN PENANG

03 February 2013, Sunday. As we left Tina in our apartment in Butterworth for she needed to prepare and do a lot of things for the new week, Gabby and I hopped on the Rapid Penang Bus to Penang Sentral; took the almost weekly routinary 15-minute- ferry ride from jetty to reach Georgetown and took another ride to get into Straits Quay -the meeting place of bloggers who volunteered to the program called, Time To Give Back, to visit 3 orphanages in Pulau Pinang organized by Responsible Blogging Malaysia 2013.

I was the happiest Daddy in the world when my son volunteered to tag along. I regarded the opportunity as a very special one as it doesn’t happen on a daily basis, that we get to reach out in our own little way to children who badly needed aid.  Gabby’s eagerness to participate was remarkably surprising as he traded his time in watching cartoons and kiddie movies for this activity. Tina and I couldn’t be grateful enough for the chance, as charity was defined to our son not only by our words but by his own experience. :D

gabby donating his clothes and toys

That shopping bag on the first photo above was filled with his own used clothes and a few toys that he personally chose and prepared with his mom.

Gladly, we reached Straits Quay, a premier seafront shopping, dining and residential complex in the island, about half an hour prior to 12noon – the call time for this event. We hurriedly grabbed some bites in one of its restaurants before we met the other volunteers.

Thank you, Chatime Malaysia for being one of the sponsors! Your iced teas and milk teas truly quenched our thirst last Sunday! The kids enjoyed the drinks, the volunteers too! :)

Subway sandwiches, you’re really are a favorite! Even long before this activity, Subway’s a family favorite! Thank you for feeding all of us! May your generosity be followed by other food establishments!

We departed Straits Quay and arrived safely in Ramakrishna Ashram.  A fine weather greeted all of us!

Apparently, this humble post aims to inspire and encourage its readers (yes, you!) to extend their helping hands by either donating generously, participate-in-a-sponsor-a-child-program, contribute in the children’s new school building fund. This orphanage and the other two that I will be featuring next, also received one unit of tablet from another sponsor, Ninetology Malaysia.

One of the orphanage’s posts in their bulletin board is a heartfelt gratitude :
thank you!

I personally endorsed Gabby’s donation to the “uncle” who’s one of the people-in-charge of the kids in Ramakrishna Ashram.

Although we only spent a little over an hour and left with everyone and headed to the next orphanage, moments were very meaningful. No words were needed to explain everything to Gabby. We were all reminded by the experience to appreciate and value more whatever he have.

2012 MINISTRY OF TOURISM MALAYSIA BEST EXPAT BLOG

There are moments in our lives that can be described as

unforgettable,

priceless,

SURREAL!

In my 35 years of existence and in my five years of blogging,

this once-in-a-lifetime-event is one of those special moments.

I am very blessed to have experienced it with MY FAMILY. :D

It’s my honor, joy and pleasure to receive the 2012 Malaysia Tourism International Bloggers Awards -Best Expat Malaysia My Second Home  Blog from the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia in the Gala Awards Night held at Saloma Theater in Kuala Lumpur, 8th May 2012.

I share this blissful moment with the people I live for –MY FAMILY,

with this blog’s readers and followers,

with my great friends

and all of my students in the Philippines and in Malaysia,

with the generous and selfless people who took time and efforts to vote for this humble site,

with my fellow Filipino bloggers who mostly remain an inspiration.

I am grateful to the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia for including an Expat blog category in this international event. I am also thankful to the esteemed panel of judges and to the honorable Minister of Tourism Malaysia herself, Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen (the beautiful Malaysian lady in light blue gown in the photos), for empowering social media particularly, blogs and bloggers with such event and recognition. My greetings and congratulations go out to the other 15 blogger-winners of this prestigious event. This achievement will serve as a motivation for me to continue what I have considered a passion and a part of my lifestyle.

To God be the glory!

Mabuhay!

MY FAVORITE PHOTOS TO DATE

And so the weeklong break has come. We’re up to enjoy the Hari Raya (end of Ramadan) vacation from work (for Tina and I) and school (for Gabby) beginning today, 27th August until 4th September. I will take my wife & kid on Tuesday next week to a short trip in a neighboring Asian country for the very perstaym, but since it’s too early to pack our luggage and bags, we’re just happy to spend more time together for more than a week (repeat : no work, no school, yahoo!) and do things we’d like to do.

De-stressing at home : As Tina’s busy preparing our meals, she also finds more time to play her favorite computer games. Gabby’s doing a cartoon marathon on TV (making me miss to watch one of the series I follow, The Amazing Race but that’s OK of course) while I go online to do a little research on our itinerary next week, making last-minute reservations and bookings (akala ko ba de-stressing?) and blogging and blog hopping in between.

I’m happy that a popular Filipino website called spot.ph featured few of my blog pictures of the Japanese restaurant back home called, Zensho, with, permission, proper credit and link to my post (back in 2009),  I was inspired to browse my photo files once more.

I chose to repost my favorite photos taken after I purchased my Nikon D7000 early this year. They may be far from your standards, but I’d like to share them again to you as my favorites to date as these captures simply make me smile when I browse them in files. Comments for improvements, particularly free tips on this hobby called photography (I consider it a big word for I am a neophyte with still so much to learn –blame my laziness to read the few photography books and magazines I acquired) will be appreciated. :)

And of course, my main reason for owning a camera is to capture moments with them with their precious smiles…

I don’t know of the technical aspects of photography yet but I like these pictures not only because of the subjects but the memories that come with them.

PS: I agree with what I have read before that “owning a DSLR doesn’t make you an instant blogger more so a photographer”.  My 2-cents-worth: It’s not really the camera that matters for it’s only a tool; it takes passion, talent and the will to learn new things for you to love and improve on these hobbies. :)

THIS ONE’S WONDERFUL!

I never thought blogging can give me so much pleasure. From gaining loyal virtual friends (of whom I met a few already) to receiving comments and opinions on my posts that they generously share, to a few perks of being invited to events, receiving gift certificates and freebies, to earning a few amount from exchange links and whatnot.

Yesterday, I got a go signal from my inbox to claim from any Western Union branch the payment for the little online transaction I engaged into, after someone bought exchange links from my blog.  After which, I went to the mall and grocery to shop for my baon (and a couple of shirts for office!)  to work for the new week. :D

This beautiful Sunday morning, my housemate-friend knocked on my door to give me this…

Now that you know my present address in Penang, you can send in fan mails, pre and post holiday gifts, pasalubong, etc. LOL!

Someone from Burbank, California spent USD 10.31 on postage just to send me a copy of his materpiece of which I have a very little contribution…

Call it trivial but for me this one’s amazing. I have never been so humbled with such appreciation…

A US-based Filipino author emailed me few months ago and asked permission if he can use one of my blog photos in his then soon-to-be-published book…who am I to say no?

This was my photo of Quiapo Church I posted on this entry –>My 15-minutes in Quiapo

With my watermarks and proper credits, my photo of Quiapo Church taken by an old-school digicam landed in Mr. Percival Cruz’s book; I am truly honored!

More credits for the contributors…

May Bagwis Ang Pag-Ibig At Iba Pang Kuwento by Percival Campoamor Cruz and Alberto Segismundo Cruz is available also via Amazon.com; here’s the the link.

To Mr. Cruz, thank you so much, Sir! Good luck on the book and More Power!

WHEN LOSING IS GAINING

My wife, Tina and I came home a few of hours ago from the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards held at PETA theater in Quezon City. It was my first time to attend such bloggers’ event and it was thrilling because my blog  is one of the finalists in Best Family and Living Blog category.

Check out this blog’s name on the 2009 PBA souvenir’s list of finalists…

IMG_4190

This is my first year to be nominated and was luckier to made it to the finals as well.  Being one of the finalists is already a great pleasure and winning as they say, is just icing on the cake :D

We came in too early, around 4:30PM because the call time on the invite via email was 5 in the afternoon.  We brought along few kilos of children’s clothes to give in to the organizers’ request for the victims of typhoon Ondoy that hit the Metro few weeks ago.

My wife and I were surprised that the event was disorganized  :(  The booths at lobby weren’t ready yet until past 5PM. In fact, there was no person to receive the pledges as I was expecting to be given at least a receipt or something.

Good thing that while we were on the queue at the registration area, my wife and I met SIDNEY SNOECK of  MY SARISARI STORE, a photoblog I truly admire.   I, for one was so honored to finally meet him; as I’ve told him personally, I am one his followers.  I so like his works of capturing the best of Filipino culture and traditions.  Wouldn’t you be so proud of being a Pinoy that a Belgian ace-photographer-blogger like him exerts so much passion and dedication of putting Filipino colors in his photo-series?  Sidney, your award for BEST FOREIGN BLOG is well-deserved.  BRAVO!

I would also like to congratulate  DENNIS VILLEGAS  for winning multiple awards inlcuding one of the Top Ten Best Post of the year! Cheers, Dennis!  (I was the one who bumped into you and said sorry as I exit the door of the theater.  I was in a hurry to go home and was a bit struck with your presence so didn’t bother to introduce myself. Sorry. But there’s always a next time).  Again, I am a fan! :D

It’s always humbling to receive comments from these award-winning bloggers!  Thank you for frequenting my site.

As for my part, I was hoping to win of course, who wouldn’t?

But I lost…. and honestly, it felt OK.  Why?  Because the “jeepney-designed” trophy and a new Nokia phone for the category I was competing were won by one of the bloggers who used to comment on my posts-  Mommy Pehpot of MAKE OR BREAK! Applause, applause!  Congratulations! :D

IMG_4182

Everyone at the lobby was treated to a cocktail and dinner served by Josiah’s catering.  The spread was not bad at all. There were also free-flowing drinks to enjoy. Thank you PBA!

The event could’ve been more special if there were no flaws or at least, less hassles in the flow of the program. Man, the show started soooo late than scheduled! I’m sorry but the presenters apparently did not rehearsed.  It’s  ironic because the stage itself is built for professional thespians of PETA who are known for great discipline.  Thanks for the witty humor of the host, RJ Ledesma that saved the night.

We didn’t finish the event because my wife still has to go on an early morning shift at the Operating Room the following day.

As we came home from the event, our 5-year-old son Gabby told me the most rewarding statement a parent can possibly receive…

  Tatay-doc :  Gabby, hindi nanalo si Daddy…

Gabby : OK lang po ‘yun Daddy, share ko naman sa inyo ni Mommy iyong trophy ko (referring to his 3rd placer trophy from his declamation contest last February) :D

With those sweetest words, I felt my blogging was gladly recognized by our son, to whom this site is heartily dedicated.

To my friends-on-line, my readers, my blog-buddies, THANK YOU!

Your frequent visits and comments here never fail to put the widest smile on my face. :D

Your comments in all of my posts about my family- from dining to our little adventures in life and things in between are more than enough reasons than a trophy to ENJOY blogosphere.

Maraming Salamat po for following BEYOND TOXICITY.  I never thought blogging and gaining virtual friends could be this so much FUN! :D

Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

UPDATED : Here’s a clip shown at the PBA awards night that made me smile up to my ears :D

BTW, my wife was happy to bring home complimentary copies of magazines from SUMMIT MEDIA booth at the lobby.

IMG_4187

Thanks, PBA!  Till next year and beyond…
