LOOKING BACK AT 2010, LOOKING FORWARD TO 2011

The outgoing year has given me a lot of humbling experiences. Only my family and truest friends can attest that 2010 has been a tough year for me, financial-wise. I have been under the weather but nevertheless, I am so grateful to our good Lord for providing His blessings in critical times when I needed the most.

Huge decisions ranging from dropping a job early this year in the name of principles, to accepting new offers to continue to seek personal and professional growths and making vital sacrifices for my family and myself form part of my 2010.  Despite my on-going struggle to become stable, there were countless remarkable memories from this year to cherish.

I reckon being in two Asian countries for more than 2 weeks (and counting) as a great privilege for me. I’ve experienced varied cultures, beliefs and religions, was exposed to amazing gastronomic flavors, have been to wonderful sights that provided opportunities to learn new things and at times, to unwind and be stress-free.

Looking back, I never planned nor thought of being in these places to wintess the turn of events happen before my very eyes. Indeed, God’s love works in mysterious ways.

Experiencing Tokyo (for 2 week-all-expense-paid trip) was truly one for the books.  I swear, I’ll revisit that most expensive city with my family someday.

The stylish and luxurious street of Marunouchi was definitely unforgettable…

Like other tourists, I also fell in love with the street Ginza…

Tasting authentic Japanese foods which are among my favorites really heightened my appreciation of Tokyo…

 Places like Akihabara Electric Town…

Harajuku, Shinagawa, Gotanda, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Asakusa are worthy of recall…

Who would not enjoy Tokyo Disneyland…

and Tokyo Disneysea…

While the second part of the year gave me a chance to work in Penang. Thank you, God!

I was impressed with one of UNESCO’S World Heritage Cities, Georgetown…

I became part of a small community of 24 Filipino MD-lecturers amongst multicultural faculty of an international medical university, all proving our worth not to anyone else but primarily to our families…

I got to experienced an overnight sailing via Star Cruise Pisces with my friends/colleagues.

I have embraced the fact that my work site is absolutely rich in diversities…

Everything has been overwhelming.

But the sweetest thing that happened to me this year was when I had a chance to bring my family over to Penang after 5 months of homesickness and solitude… Our reunion that brought us to Penang Island, Genting Highlands Resort and the city of Kuala Lumpur that also gave Tina that 1-year renewable contract as an Operating Room Nurse in a Joint Committee Accredited Hospital in Penang Island (she’ll start working after her registration with Malaysian Nursing Council is released that we hope to happen 1 – 3 months from now) has been truly rewarding.

I pray for abundance, health and safety for my family, friends and myself.

I wish I can perform my job beyond my employer’s expectations and more importantly, I want to continue being an inspiration to others, particularly my former and present students.

I hope for more travels and learning opportunities to come our way.

I’ll try my very best to save, save and save and to establish my family abroad in God’s will.

I pray to become a better person and a blessing to others.

With challenges and graces from 2010, I pray that I can carry on to 2011 with so much hope, optimism and faith.

So help me, God.

Have a prosperous, healthy and happy 2011, everyone!

WANTED : A HAPPIER TWENTY TEN

WARNING : This can be depressing. :(

I grew up spending Media Noche or New Year’s Eve dinner with my entire family.  Whatever is on the spread, there’s always a basket of 13 round fruits to symbolize high hopes for prosperity for each month of the New Year and beyond.  This year, we had grapefruit, pineapple, lemon, grapes, chico, kiat-kiat, pomelo, golden honeydew (which I haven’t tasted yet!), cantaloupe, red apple, orange, guava, and a pear.  Do you also practice the same Pinoy tradition?  What did you share with your families and/or friends on your feast?   How was your own New Year’s Eve celebration ?  Did you have fireworks and firecrackers ?

In as much as I’d like to be 100% happy, optimistic and all, I had mixed emotions welcoming 2010.  It was so different and incomparable from two Christmases and New Year’s Eves I spent on duty in a public hospital years ago.
This was the very first holiday that my mom is abroad for work and there are so many issues we have to resolved.  It was also the first New Year that my wife, Tina with our son, Gabby and I had spent New Year’s Eve with my dad-in-law;  the big deal with it was the reason of his unexpected and unplanned sudden vacation here from California – it was to attend his brother’s wake and funeral.
Tina’s uncle died four days before Christmas because of the  big C  which was lately diagnosed last October 2008.   I remember him when he went to our place to ask for a narcotic prescription for his severe headache.  I never submitted to his request and adviced him to have a thorough physical exam with lab work ups and true enough, the cause of his complaint wasn’t the usual hypertension or stress but a malignant mass in his nasopharyngeal area with rare presentation.
On the last week of October, he underwent biopsies more than once that led to anemia and few blood transfusion due to hemorrhage incurred post-procedures; CAT-SCANs and other diagnostics several times; had been requested to undergo radiation therapy but was already late when he developed pneumonia.  When he was discharged with nasogastric tube (a feeding tube where drugs can also be administered; inserted in the nose all the way down to stomach), I and Tina had helped his sons in re-inserting the tube and tried to assist them in little way we can.
And because they’ve waited for two of Tina’s cousins who came home from US and so her stepdad (my in-law), they have to schedule the interment 2 days before the whole world welcomes 2010.  How can you enjoy it cheerfully while celebrating someone else’s life ?
The entire grieving family attended a mass in Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina after a sumptuous catered buffet where we had molo soup, chicken cordon bleu, fried fish fillet with honey mustard dip, beef in mushroom gravy, buttered veggies and those delicious cupcakes, eclair, and cream puff for dessert.  Free flowing brewed coffee kept us awake during the wake.  There were also juices in tetra packs and Milo for Gabby and other kids.
The homily of the priest (he called himself member of PNP –pari nagmimisa sa patay) was so remarkable that it lightened our spirits and emotions that evening.  He shared his own experiences when he lost his parents. He remembered what his father told them — that he wasn’t dying but was ready to ’go abroad’.   If that’s the case, then cemeteries are our ’pre-departure areas’ and all of us, with no exception (unless you’re immortal or one of the X-Men) will be traveling soon to our Lord’s Kingdom one after the other.
Last year was tragic for most Pinoy families particularly those who experienced the wrath of typhoons. But TODAY’s a new day.  Everyone should move on.  Like you, I have no choice but to keep positivity in my pocket and simply look forward and continue to dream BIG today and so on and so forth… :D
A Happy New Year to all.

Feliz Año Nuevo a todos.

Feliç Any Nou a tots.

RANDOM WISHES FOR 2010

I never practiced having New Year’s resolutions other than complying with my Elementary teacher’s requirement decades ago.  Perhaps, like you, I don’t believe that change should only be done every turn of a calendar but regardless of the moment. Instead of listing down resolutions, I have so many things to be grateful for this 2009 and also have random wishes for 2010 and beyond.

:D My gratitude…

1. Thank you, God for a healthy and happy family.

2. Thank you, God for all the blessings – big and small.

3. Thank you, Tina and Gabby for being so you throughout the year.  You know I love you forever (naks!).

4. Thank you to our parents, my in-laws, our brothers & sisters who have been very supportive with us.

5. Thank you to our closest friends whom we keep like gems.

6. Thank you, readers and followers of this humble site.  You never fail to inspire me to blog.

7. Thank you to all people who have contributed to our personal and professional growth.

8. Thank you to our students who tirelessly submit their attention to learning.

:D My wishes…

1. I wish to travel more with my family, within the country and abroad.

2. I wish to have financial stability (it’s a never-ending process.). So help me, God!

3. I wish to work with less hassles and stress (is this next to impossible?).

4. I wish discipline, respect to God, laws and one another and of course love be inculcated in every Pinoy, young and old. (it’s high time, folks!)

5. I wish for peaceful election.

6. I wish to have a corrupt-free governance from the smallest community to national offices –we deserve it!

7. I wish to bring my family to more hotels and restaurants! *grin*

8. I wish poverty be alleviated; crime rates be reduced; and charity be infectious.

9. I have to spend more quality time with my family.

10. I have to commune with nature more frequently.

11. I wish to use my credit cards less.

12. I pray that my dad-in-law’s petition to my wife be granted this 2010 or an employer would petition Tina who’s already a California-Registered Nurse.

13. I wish Gabby to grow up smarter, more God-fearing, obedient and further develop his GMRC.

14. I have to learn to be more patient.  I know it’s a virtue.

15. I pray Tina and I will save more for the future.

16. I wish Beyond Toxicity (yes, this blog is called such) to inspire more people to have fun with their families.

17. And of course, we pray for WORLD PEACE.    AMEN! :D

What about you? What are your wishes and hopes for the New Year?

Have a fantastic and prosperous New Year everyone! God bless us all. :D

Keep all celebrations safe and fun! CHEERS!!!

PLANS AND PLANNERS

On the late afternoon of Christmas Day, soon after we left our paternal Lola’s house in Calumpang, Marikina City, I with my wife, Tina, our son, Gabby and my brother JC went to Eastwood Mall…

Gabby asked for a grande cup of Chocolate frappuccino and a slice of Oreo Cheesecake from Starbucks.  He finished the entire decadent while I shared the Banoffee Pie (one of my favorites!) with Tina.  I also enjoyed Dark Cherry Mocha frap and she had a hot grande cup of Toffee Nut.

Then after several weeks of caffeine indulgence, finally I got my 2010 Starbucks Coffee Planner. :D   It’s probably one of the most expensive planners but one cannot purchase it directly; and can only be redeemed via a completed promo sticker card.

Each Starbucks Planner Promo Card requires interested patrons to collect 8 stickers (at 1 sticker per cup of any size) of Holiday blends (Toffee Nut, Peppermint Mocha and Dark Cherry Mocha) and another 8 stickers (or cups) from the usual Starbucks beverages.

I’ve been religiously using the planners from Starbucks for 3 years now and found it so functional to jot down schedules, appointments, small notes and whatnot. I am the type of guy who needs to write down important things in order to avoid missing them.  Are we the same who need a pen and paper most of the time ?  FYI, I sometimes suffer from selective amnesia, that’s why, LOL! :D

One of the unique features of  the 2010 edtion is its coffee bean shaped marker which I wish to keep and hope would not be lost throughout the year.

For the 2010 planner, the collector can choose from 3 cover designs  –coffee beans, coffee blender and coffee roaster which I like best.

The planner also comes with different discount coupons with specified dates.

Now that I’ve claimed mine, I’m just glad to have another partner (other than Tina,LOL!)  that can aid me to be more organized.

Come to think of it, I have no plans yet for January 08… Hmmm… do you have any clue what’s worth anticipating with the eighth day of the first month of the year?  Abangan! :D

Who does not want to plan for wonderful travels and awesome dining pleasures all throughout the year?

:D What are your biggest plans for next year ?

:D Can you keep schedules efficiently or do you also need someone or something to put everything properly ?
