RANDOM WISHES FOR 2010

I never practiced having New Year’s resolutions other than complying with my Elementary teacher’s requirement decades ago.  Perhaps, like you, I don’t believe that change should only be done every turn of a calendar but regardless of the moment. Instead of listing down resolutions, I have so many things to be grateful for this 2009 and also have random wishes for 2010 and beyond.

:D My gratitude…

1. Thank you, God for a healthy and happy family.

2. Thank you, God for all the blessings – big and small.

3. Thank you, Tina and Gabby for being so you throughout the year.  You know I love you forever (naks!).

4. Thank you to our parents, my in-laws, our brothers & sisters who have been very supportive with us.

5. Thank you to our closest friends whom we keep like gems.

6. Thank you, readers and followers of this humble site.  You never fail to inspire me to blog.

7. Thank you to all people who have contributed to our personal and professional growth.

8. Thank you to our students who tirelessly submit their attention to learning.

:D My wishes…

1. I wish to travel more with my family, within the country and abroad.

2. I wish to have financial stability (it’s a never-ending process.). So help me, God!

3. I wish to work with less hassles and stress (is this next to impossible?).

4. I wish discipline, respect to God, laws and one another and of course love be inculcated in every Pinoy, young and old. (it’s high time, folks!)

5. I wish for peaceful election.

6. I wish to have a corrupt-free governance from the smallest community to national offices –we deserve it!

7. I wish to bring my family to more hotels and restaurants! *grin*

8. I wish poverty be alleviated; crime rates be reduced; and charity be infectious.

9. I have to spend more quality time with my family.

10. I have to commune with nature more frequently.

11. I wish to use my credit cards less.

12. I pray that my dad-in-law’s petition to my wife be granted this 2010 or an employer would petition Tina who’s already a California-Registered Nurse.

13. I wish Gabby to grow up smarter, more God-fearing, obedient and further develop his GMRC.

14. I have to learn to be more patient.  I know it’s a virtue.

15. I pray Tina and I will save more for the future.

16. I wish Beyond Toxicity (yes, this blog is called such) to inspire more people to have fun with their families.

17. And of course, we pray for WORLD PEACE.    AMEN! :D

What about you? What are your wishes and hopes for the New Year?

Have a fantastic and prosperous New Year everyone! God bless us all. :D

Keep all celebrations safe and fun! CHEERS!!!

THE ART OF HAVING FUN

About a couple of weeks before Christmas, we met up with our friend, Rob at Shangri la mall where he treated us for a lunch and sponsored his godson’s activity without me asking it.  :)   Gabby was really delighted spending time again at COLOR ME MINE.  It’s a paint-your-own-ceramic-studio where the environment offers relaxing & inviting ambiance. How’s that possible in a mall?  Color Me Mine has wooden furnitures and shelves where ceramics are on display.  One can spend his time alone or with his families and/or friends to unwind by painting ceramic/s;  it’s actually a nice bonding activity.

Although prices of would be ‘art-pieces’ vary depending on size and design,  clients are only required to pay PhP 180+,  for the use of the venue until their ’masterpiece’ is done, all-colors-of-paint-you-need, use of brushes, paper stencils, sponge etc. and the glazing and baking of the finished product in their pottery kilns by their staff.

Gabby, inspired by the holiday season, personally hand-picked a ceramic plate with Santa Claus’ face embossed design that costs PhP 780 all-in.

Our last visit to Color Me Mine prior to this was February of this year when we had our second art activity that can be viewed here

While I was coaching Rob for his Nursing exam and Rob were catching up on the other table, Tina and Gabby were busy being ‘artists’. :D

After painting job is done, client submits the ceramic to the staff, pay and claim the receipt with specified date when to redeem the finished art work.  Baking on pottery kilns enhances the colors of the paint, making it glazed and more vivid.

Here’s the ‘before and after’ look of the posterior part of the plate.  I wrote all our names including another friend’s who was a-no-show that day.

Tina gave Gabby freedom to choose most of the colors and only guided him on taking strokes with the brushes. Clients need not worry if they’ve no artistic inclinations for there are pencils and small paper stencils that would serve as patterns for the designs.

Another ‘before and after’ photos of the plate taken on its anterior side…That’s our son’s handwriting there of his name! :D (FYI, he knows now how to read and write at 5 y/o).

Whether it’s an art activity or something else, spending quality time is always the best gift we can give our love ones. :D

Let’s keep our New Year celebration peaceful, safe and healthy!

Hope you enjoy the rest of the holidays!

MORE HAAGEN-DAZS MOMENTS

We  only have a few more breaths before we welcome a NEW YEAR!  And I thought of posting my backlogs something to delight your senses!

The love for ice cream runs in our blood! :D   Few weeks ago, we trooped to Mega Atrium of SM Megamall and spent an afternoon of nothing but family fun (read : INDULGENCE!).

We’re still in awe and have been savoring our HAAGEN-DAZS FONDUE experience more than a month ago and thankfully, we’ve sampled few of their heavenly treats again.  What’s best with these velvety-ice-cream moments isn’t only enjoying it with my lovely family but having all of them for FREE! :D   No, we’re not HD afficionados but we’re only lucky to receive HD’s GCs from an event we attended.

We’ve tried their branches at Robinson’s Place, SM Mall of Asia and recently, Mega Atrium in SM Megamall.  And there are 3 common things we like in these Haagen-Dazs stores :

1. They know how to value their clients.  At least with our few dine-in experiences, we’re satisfied with their service.  Staffs aren’t only friendly and nice but know their goodies so well!

2. Clients have  the luxury of finding flavors that are truly inspiring!  Indulging in HD ice cream is such a pleasurable way to end a very tiring day or to start a new week fresh!

3. And Dine-in customers have the freedom to MIX, MATCH, INVENT, COMBINE, CREATE & most especially ENJOY scoops and spoonfuls of Haagen-Dazs ice cream.

Now allow me, Tina and Gabby to give you the license to drool, *pun intended*  :D

The   B E S T   BANANA SPLIT  I’ve tasted to date…

BANANA SPLIT, PhP 380+.  Haagen-Dazs classic Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry Ice Cream, fresh banana and crispy almond flakes topped with maraschino cherry.  But as I’ve mentioned, in HD, there’s the liberty to MIX, MATCH, INVENT, COMBINE, CREATE and ENJOY; I chose variation of its original flavors…

For my BANANA SPLIT, I had :

1. CHOC CHOC CHIP : a velvety blend of milk chocolate ice cream with a generous handful of dark chocolate chips. FYI, I like dark chocolates!

2. STRAWBERRY : Sweet, summer strawberries are introduced to pure cream and natural ingredients.

3. VANILLA CARAMEL BROWNIE :  The elegance and sophistication of vanilla mixed with bits of chewy tasteful brownies with caramel drizzle.

Gabby had his own share of a BRUFFIN, PhP 60+ and a scoop of COOKIES AND CREAM, PhP 150+.

While Tina also opted to have her own choice  mix and match moment…

My wife had two scoops of ice cream :

1.  DULCE DE LECHE : A delicious combination of caramel and sweet cream, swirled with ribbons of golden caramel.

2. STRAWBERRIES CHEESECAKE  in what Haagen-Dazs called BELGIAN WAFFLE DREAM, PhP 350+.

She opted for that second flavor rather than Macadamia Nut Brittle which is also a bestseller; her plate was served with warm Belgian waffle and freshly whipped cream.

*Expect more Haagen-Dazs Moments from me and my family next year! :D

:D Do you also indulge in ice cream?

:D What’s your favorite flavor?

:D  What do you eat with ice cream?

NEWBIE ON HAINANESE CHICKEN

TOASTBOX’S  HAINANESE RICE with ICED LEMON TEA, PhP 219+

Hainanese chicken rice is a dish of Chinese origin most commonly associated with Singaporean cuisine or Malaysian cuisine, although it is also commonly sold in neighbouring Thailand, and found in Hainan, China itself. So-called due to its roots in Hainan cuisine and its adoption by the Hainanese overseas Chinese population in the Nanyang area (present-day Southeast Asia), the version found in the Singapore region combines elements of Hainanese and Cantonese cuisines along with culinary preferences in the Southeast Asian region.

The chicken is prepared in traditional Hainanese methods which involve the boiling of the entire chicken in a pork and chicken bone stock, reusing the broth over and over and only topping it up with water when needed, in accordance with the Chinese preferences for creating master stocks. This stock is not used for rice preparation, which instead involves chicken stock created specifically for that purpose, producing an oily, flavourful rice sometimes known as “oily rice” with Southeast Asian pandan leaves added sometimes.

The dish is usually served with several dips, including chilli sauce and pounded ginger. It is common in Hainan to also offer a third sauce involving oyster sauce mixed with garlic, while dark soy sauce is more commonly served in Malaysia/Singapore. The Malaysian/Singaporean version of the chili are also much hotter, reflecting its Southeast Asian influences, and may also involve a mixture of chilli with garlic. Most dishes are served with sliced cucumber, reflecting the Chinese preference for introducing some variety for a more complete meal.   ~Via Wikipedia

What was planned as a quick bite before hitting the grocery shelves in Landmark, TriNoma a day after Christmas turned out to be a heavy merienda for us!  And if you’re following this site for sometime now, it’s no longer surprising! *grin* :D

My wife, Tina and I, including our son, Gabby consider ourselves foodies but also newbies on taking gastronomic adventures.  We’re not that aggressive and still keep our personal preferences making every dining experience always fun!

It was our first time to try TOASTBOX, an Asian restaurant originated in Singapore that’s owned by BreadTalk Group of Companies.  Another first for me was to taste Hainanese Chicken!  Needless to say, there’s no way I can compare it with other versions but Toastbox’s actually satisfied my discriminating  palate. :)

The serving of chicken was almost a quarter and was so tender and flavorful! The rice was just as tasteful.  I enjoyed the chicken with its 3 traditional dips! I’ll consider ordering it again on our next visit with efforts to try other dishes as well.

Tina also gave her ‘thumbs-up’ to my plate but she was enjoying her bowl of soup as well.

THAI GLASS NOODLES-SEAFOODS with ICED LEMON TEA, PhP 169+.   The bowl was big enough for two;  it was served perfectly hot and never fail to warm our tummies.  It has generous servings of squid balls, few pieces of sliced shrimps and its smaller variant with bean sprouts and some spices.  Yummy! :)

Gabby had his favorite BreadTalk goodies and also enjoyed Toastbox’s MILO DINOSAUR! While Tina and I had Iced Lemon Tea and also shared Toastbox’s D.I.Y. KOPI JELLY.

ICED LEMON TEA was ordered with the entrees, D.I.Y. KOPI JELLY, PhP 80+, and MILO DINOSAUR, PhP 89+

We went grocery shopping after with wide smiles up to our ears! :)

SANTA’S GIFTS

Our 5-year-old son, Gabby is like any kid of his age who’s fond of toys!  So it isn’t surprising that despite the lack of chimney and a fireplace, Santa Claus still managed to give him an addition to his collection this year.  Other  than a bar of Toblerone and few pieces of colorful jelly ace found in his socks, Gabby also got 100-piece Jaw Bones wrapped in a box personally chosen from a ton of toys at Toys R Us  Santa’s factory by you-know-who. :D *wink*

Now, I am jealous of children these days for simple reason of having toys that are so cool and fascinating.  I don’t remember playing with these during my wonder years.  For kids of the 70s and 80s, can you imagine having PSP or a Gameboy instead of Game and Watch during our growing years?  Although I did have my share of  lego, G.I. Joe action figures, R.C., some matchbox cars, and few board games before, there were not much of things that would enhance logic and creativity more.

I cannot contest that books, other than clothes are best gifts for children but you know how kids will be kids and they would always want to spend more time on things that are colorful and would tickle their fancy.

Perhaps, Santa found lego and mega blocks more pricey and opted for a different version that wasn’t so cheap either but just as hip and edgy! :D

Tina and I are glad that Gabby likes his new toy and as expected, he asked me, even his visiting uncle Mac to spend more playing time with him. I am not complaining; in fact, I like it :)

With a booklet guide to the patterns and having less help from us, our son tried building these works of art…

A  BUGGY  &   A  CHILD…

A  DOGGIE  &  A  TRICYCLE….

A  DRAG RACER  &  A  BI-PLANE…

There are 6 more structures to create with these awesome Jaw Bones!

:D What are your favorite toys during your growing up years?

Excuse me as Gabby and I have to continue our bonding time with his new source of fun. :D

PLANS AND PLANNERS

On the late afternoon of Christmas Day, soon after we left our paternal Lola’s house in Calumpang, Marikina City, I with my wife, Tina, our son, Gabby and my brother JC went to Eastwood Mall…

Gabby asked for a grande cup of Chocolate frappuccino and a slice of Oreo Cheesecake from Starbucks.  He finished the entire decadent while I shared the Banoffee Pie (one of my favorites!) with Tina.  I also enjoyed Dark Cherry Mocha frap and she had a hot grande cup of Toffee Nut.

Then after several weeks of caffeine indulgence, finally I got my 2010 Starbucks Coffee Planner. :D   It’s probably one of the most expensive planners but one cannot purchase it directly; and can only be redeemed via a completed promo sticker card.

Each Starbucks Planner Promo Card requires interested patrons to collect 8 stickers (at 1 sticker per cup of any size) of Holiday blends (Toffee Nut, Peppermint Mocha and Dark Cherry Mocha) and another 8 stickers (or cups) from the usual Starbucks beverages.

I’ve been religiously using the planners from Starbucks for 3 years now and found it so functional to jot down schedules, appointments, small notes and whatnot. I am the type of guy who needs to write down important things in order to avoid missing them.  Are we the same who need a pen and paper most of the time ?  FYI, I sometimes suffer from selective amnesia, that’s why, LOL! :D

One of the unique features of  the 2010 edtion is its coffee bean shaped marker which I wish to keep and hope would not be lost throughout the year.

For the 2010 planner, the collector can choose from 3 cover designs  –coffee beans, coffee blender and coffee roaster which I like best.

The planner also comes with different discount coupons with specified dates.

Now that I’ve claimed mine, I’m just glad to have another partner (other than Tina,LOL!)  that can aid me to be more organized.

Come to think of it, I have no plans yet for January 08… Hmmm… do you have any clue what’s worth anticipating with the eighth day of the first month of the year?  Abangan! :D

Who does not want to plan for wonderful travels and awesome dining pleasures all throughout the year?

:D What are your biggest plans for next year ?

:D Can you keep schedules efficiently or do you also need someone or something to put everything properly ?

OUR LOLA & OUR KIDS

Last Friday, Tina, Gabby and I heard mass with my brother, JC at Christ the King Church in E.Rodriguez Avenue in Quezon City. Then in time for lunch, we met up with my other brother, who’s a private pilot, with his family at our paternal grandmother’s place in Calumpang, Marikina City. It has been a tradition in our family, perhaps like yours, to visit relatives whenever possible or, at least every Christmas.

Who would have thought that this old ancestral home was never spared by typhoon Ondoy’s wrath?   The flood in that living room was chest-deep last September; the mud was unbearable.  Luckily, it’s a 2-storey house that saved the lives of our Lola and our relatives during those times.

Like my aunt’s place in Pasig City and many others affected by that unforgettable natural disaster that hit Manila and most of Luzon, my Lola Tentay’s house, which was built of love of 12 children, 30+ apos and ‘apo sa tuhod’  was also made ready for the holidays despite what it went through.

We’re glad to see Lola Tentay, who can still finish a plate of rice and viand for lunch and to find her having a good appetite for a hamburger bun for snack was really awesome! Although she’s now forgetful like other geriatrics, she can manage to smile and perhaps recall our names when we remind her.

Tina took her pulse and BP and turned out fine for her age. Our entire clan here and across the globe are still happy to have her. Most of them from LA, and New Jersey in the US and Melbourne in Australia will come home next month as we celebrate our Lola’s 90th birthday. :D

Look how her great-great grandchildren smiled for the cam upon seeing her on Christmas.  They’re not even a quarter of the total number of all her ‘apo sa tuhod’!

Those are my niece KC, nephew Joshua and our son, Gabby. :D

How did you spend your Christmas day this year?

Did you visit any of your relatives too ?

Aren’t you proud that we Pinoys keep our families in close-knit ?

OUR FIFTY-PESO-NOCHE BUENA

:D How different was your Christmas dinner ?

The day before Christmas, Tina, Gabby and I went home again.  We visited my parents’ place in Pasig City.  Since we’re living in Quezon City for 3 or 4 years now, I certainly missed putting up our old Christmas tree. Its ornaments and decors, particularly the memories that come with each, are even older than our five-year-old son. :D   Seeing it again made me miss more our late Lolo Meliton and Lola Idang, our maternal grandparents who have been happier for years now in God’s embrace. I miss them specially during occasions like this.

We also miss our mom who’s in UAE for work.  She just can’t put down her job for a ton of reasons.  My 3 brothers, our dad and I definitely felt her absence; spending our very first holiday (in my 33 years of existence) without her. :(   We just settled with a phone call and a few webcam chats with her.

Tina, Gabby and I also went to my maternal aunt’s house in Karangalan Village, also in Pasig which was flooded by typhoon Ondoy last September. Thankfully, they’ve fully recovered without a trace of the incident.

Like our late Lola, our Ate Bunso (my mom’s one and only sister) would always packed her cooked yummies in microwavables for us to bring home and this year was no exception. We had her leche flan, gelatin and fruit salad as our ‘major’ loots. :D She also prepared Dinuguan and Menudo with pickles or what we call, Luto sa Pickles that Tina served for our dinner back home.

Unintentionally, Tina and I literally did not spend even an effort except for frying our ham for our Noche Buena this year. Since we got 2 sweet hams (1kg each of Purefoods Fiesta Ham and another kg of King Sue Ham), 2 bottles of red wine and a small quezo de bola which were all gifts to us by Tina’s employer and a Reverend-family friend, we decided to just buy 10 pieces of brick-oven-baked pandesal to celebrate our Lord’s birthday. :D

So while the rest of the world were eating in upscale restaurants or at home, enjoying their expensive Christmas feast, Tina, Gabby and I were all happy to have our own Noche Buena with only, believe it or not,  PhP 50-cash-out, LOL! :D

Tina and I sipped a little of red wine, Gabby had his bottle of yakult!  Solved! :D

We’re truly grateful for all the blessings – big and small.

How was your Noche Buena?  I hope you had fun too.

Regardless of what you had on the spread, or wherever you spent it, I wish you have enjoyed it with your love ones and kept the meaning of Christmas in our hearts. :D   Happy Holidays!

I PRESCRIBE

Unapparently, I am stressed these days.  And God forbid, I guess the hassles will be carried on until the first few weeks of 2010.  I worry a lot and am anxious of most things concerning work, finances and domestic problems indirectly involving Tina and Gabby.  Who doesn’t have problems, anyway?  My greatest consolations and things to be grateful to God are having a sickness-free family and their support & much of love that like batteries–keeps me going! :D

I have to write it down to make it at least tangible, so as to remind myself of what to do and how to cope with life’s daily challenges.

Here’s my prescription to myself :

Do you think you need one too?

Not so long ago, I took a chance in an interview in a healthcare company and I can still recall vividly the question of the HRD manager which I honestly answered :

“What do you do when you’re stressed ?”

I told her in a heartbeat : “There are 3 things I do when I’m stressed, first I pray, second I try to pause and remember how my son giggles or laughs, and third I indulge -in food and blogging. Then when I’m collected I begin to think critically and analyze what needs to be done.”

I may sound too preachy when in fact I’m not-so-religious, but I really turn to Him when I’m troubled.

Sometimes, which I think should be done always, I even thank the Lord for problems; I believe He will not challenge us if we cannot bear it. Do we think the same?

What about you?  How do you cope up with stress?

God bless all of us this holiday and the coming New Year! :D

Have a worry-free Christmas, above and beyond our toxicities! :D

MUNCH

After we gave up drinking Coke and other sodas for weeks now, I noticed we’ve lessen our chips  chichiria  intake too.  But in between meals and when we need something to chew, other than chocolates, we’ve been into some cookies and popcorn latelty that’s hard to put down. :D

I know oatmeal is healthy and I even tried them once but I’m so not into it until my family and I found these in the grocery shelf few weeks ago…

Now, Gabby, Tina & I can enjoy oatmeal anytime without the hassle of preparing them in a bowl and just munching it in delicious flavors! :D   Have you tried these oatmel cookies from Quaker oats ?  A pack of 6 with 3 cookies in a pack only costs less than PhP 60.  We considered it as an alternative to Gabby’s baon to school which are usually crackers or chocolate chip cookies.

Another good munch is popcorn! Do you also like popcorn? :D   We’re so into popcorn these days; we like ‘em for merienda and for quick bites :D

Have you tried Chicago Popcorn?  We’re so glad to spot its store in Shangri la mall few weeks ago; good thing they’ve put another branch other than their SM Mall of Asia’s.

We’ve sampled both cheese and caramel flavors and we like them both but not as good as the other brand.  Although, I personally like its tin can packaging that comes with a discount when brought for refill. A large tin can of Chicago Popcorn combination costs around PhP 190 and the refill with the can is only at PhP 130.

What about Chef Tony’s ?

Comparing the 2 popcorn we like, CT’s has bigger pops and more flavors to choose from.  I like their Dark Chocolate with Roasted Almonds very much and so their Mochachino while Tina and Gabby like Cheddar. :D

Chef Tony’s Dark Chocolate Popcorn with Honey Roasted Almonds (in whole nuts!) : My favorite! but it’s a bit pricey at PhP 210 per large tub. :(

Tina and Gabby go for Chef Tony’s Cheddar popcorn; large tub costs less than PhP 200.

What’s your favorite munch ?

LATE LUNCH : LESS AMAZING

Clockwise :  Aussie Fries PhP 150+, Cordon Bleu PhP 230+, Choco Mud Slice PhP 120+, Pan-Grilled Dory with Lobster Sauce PhP 320+, Pasta Carbonara (Rigatoni) PhP 280+,  Pumpkin Soup PhP 90+.

A couple of weeks ago, Rob, our friend of 16 years came home for his break from an overseas work and invited us to see him in Shangri la Mall.

Rob via phone call : …”Gusto nyo Secret Recipe, para maiba naman?”

docgelo : “Rob, we’re already here.  Sure, we’ll meet you near Wrap Shop, 5th level..”

Then Tina, Gabby, Rob and I sat in Secret Recipe. Their gay waiter, A came and handed us the menu.  Few minutes later :

Waiter A :  “Sir, Maam, are you ready to order? “

docgelo : “…later…..”

After few chat with family and a friend, waiter A came over to our table again…

Waiter A :  “Sir, try nyo yung  NZ Stewed Lamb with Rice…”

docgelo (politely) : “No… “  (note to self  : Sorry, but I don’t feel like eating lamb today, actually I like lamb less)

Waiter A : “OK po iyon, iyon ang bestseller namin.. try nyo yung lamb…”

docgelo (quietly to himself) :  ….ayoko ko nga ng lamb eh!!!

docgelo (to waiter A) :  Can you make MEE GORENG a little less spicy ?

Waiter A :  HINDI PO!

docgelo (to himself) :  “why not? what happened to ‘customers are always right?”

Tina and I always consider our 5-year-old son, Gabby at all times, so I would have wanted this Asian noodle dish to be less spicy but the waiter declined my order. Why, oh why?

docgelo to waiter A :  “Sige, I’ll just have Pan-Grilled Dory with Lobster Sauce.”

Waiter A (for the ANNOYING SECOND TIME) :  “Sir, try nyo yung LAMB…”

docgelo (still controlling his temper) : “No, I’ll have Pan Dory and Pumpkin Soup.  Thank you…”

Tina :  “I’ll have Cordon Bleu and for Gabby,  a slice of Choco Mud Cake…”

Rob ordered Pasta Carbonara, Fresh Watermelon Shake, and Aussie Fries.

My wife and I are always happy to see our friends, not only because they usually treat us to lunch or dinner almost every 3 months but that’s what we really are; believe it or not, we just value our friendship.:D  Our excitement to see Rob that day went down to ground zero because we were ALL irked with that Secret Recipe experience.

I usually post raves more than rant with regards to our dining pleasures except for this. I just cannot let this pass and would like to be honest at all times on my blog.

Let me state that the absence of service charge on the bill (of PhP 1,405 VAT inclusive) should never ever be equated to POOR SERVICE that we don’t deserve.  Courtesy and friendliness mean wait staff may only suggest something from the menu but should NEVER INSIST their opinion on ordering food and they should not say NO to a client’s request (say of making a dish less spicy or salty etc) UNLESS it isn’t possible.

I didn’t even recall that waiter saying THANK YOU to us.  It lessens my appetite when I encounter obnoxious people!  And for that moment, forgive me but that waiter A of Secret Recipe Shangri-la branch was so successful in getting into my and my wife’s nerves!  Besides, there’s NOTHING REALLY SPECIAL about the food we ordered which I even thought were overpriced!  I would not shell out PhP 1,405 for a meal that’s not satisfying!  SERVICE WAS WORST, ambiance wasn’t inviting; and foods were mediocre.  Now, WHERE’S THEIR secret recipe?

Do you think we left a tip for waiter A ?  pun intended, LOL! :D

HAVE YOU TRIED TESSIE TOMAS SALAD ?

My wife, Tina, our preschooler son, Gabby and I joined my our 2 good best friends of 16 years and counting for a casual get together 6 days before Christmas.  We came from different places but all hurdled the holiday rush going to SM Megamall just to catch up with our 7PM dinner.

After few SMS of where to dine, my suggestion was honored. :D   Finally, we have tried CHEF’S QUARTER in Mega Atrium.

I’ve been longing to try and taste some of their dishes after I’ve read their reviews from broadsheets and on-line.

We saw the place was packed except for the table outside the restaurant so we decided to occupy it while waiting for Rob who was caught in traffic from Pasay City.  Our friends asked me if I’d like to avail of Chef’s Quarter’s eat-all-you-want spread but out of nowhere, I beg off.  I opted their ala carte. Perhaps those CQ’s dinner and merienda buffets could wait some time. :D   Just before we were given the menu, I’m already sure of what to choose.

For Salads, Chef’s Quarter has Trio Salad (prawns, escargot & mushrooms on lettuce in balsamic variation), Frut de Mer (spiced seafood and pomelo in sesame vinaigrette), Foie Gras Salad (goose liver on green apple ragout in raspberry honey sauce), Caprese Salad (baked buffalo mozarella, plum tomato, basil and toasted garlic), and Caesar Salad (romaine lettuce tossed in lemon-anchovy dressing with garlic croutons bacon bits and parmesan cheese).

Those salads appeared to me as must-try but I and our friend, LG particularly singled out TESSIE TOMAS SALAD “OLD TIME FAVORITE” for our starter.  I guess we’re both interested on how the name of a local celebrity made these seafoods on bed of greens quite attention-grabbing on CQ’s menu.

On my plate :

TESSIE TOMAS SALAD “OLD TIME FAVORITE”,  large / to-share PhP 595+.  A combination of Roasted prawns, Marinated Salmon, Shiitake Mushroom with Mesclun Salad in French Creamy Balsamic Dressing.

While others considered this salad as ordinary or found nothing unusual, I instantly fell in love with it. :)   Perhaps because I really like no complexities and I’m just biased to its ingredients.

I don’t know about you but I’m a loyal SEAFOOD fanatic.  I love SHRIMPS from its little variant used to prepare a Bagoong Alamang or shrimp paste to its larger sized prawns; so it wasn’t difficult to like this at all.  Tessie Tomas Salad-large size has FOUR PRAWNS that were roasted in almost perfection; they’re succulent and plump. :D

While Gabby was still picky on food and was not at all interested with salad, I served Tina and LG their share of the prawns and asked our benefactor for that dinner, Rob, if he wants one.  Quietly, I was jumping for joy when he passed up; that made two prawns landing in my plate!!! :D

FRENCH ONION SOUP, PhP 150+.

Rob was the only one who ordered for a soup. It comes with two small pieces of bread and butter but was served several minutes after the bowl of the soup was brought to our table. There was no apologies from the wait staff so they just gave themselves a minus-point. But let me clear that everything was served within 20 minutes after ordering except for those breads.

STIR FRIED PAELLA SEAFOOD, PhP 430+ large order / to-share.  If you must know, I also love this Spanish dish.  Although CQ’s version may not be the most flavorful but it doesn’t disappoint either. All of us were satisfied with this platter and despite its HUGE serving, I personally felt short, actually and would crave for more, LOL :D

CHEF’S QUARTER PASTA, PhP 420+, large /to-share serving.  Fettucine tossed in mild spicy vegetable pangritata with prawns.

What can I say? This pasta plate has prawns again! It was raining calcium and iodine last night, LOL! :D   Actually, Tina considered sharing her order with us so instead of having a steak which Rob doesn’t eat (read : he hates pork and beef), she agreed on my suggestion for this pasta which Gabby liked as well.

ICED TEA, refillable PhP 75+.   Refreshing, but I was expecting a more uniquely tasteful house blend.

BELGIAN CHOCOLATE FONDUE, PhP 350+.  Mallows and fresh fruits.  Gabby personally hand-picked this dessert from the menu.  It was OK but suffered comparison with the BEST FONDUE that we have sampled to date.  I think we’ll order their cake slices on our next visit.

Service was good but not great; maybe because staff was busy more on refilling the buffet spread and a little bit less attentive on the ala carte diners.  The place was a bit small especially when cramped during peak hours.  Nonetheless, Chef’s Quarter deserves a second and many more visits because of the quality, taste, cleanliness and presentation of their dishes.

We spent more than 3 hours of chatting over fine foods on our table.  Other than the dinner treat, Rob and LG who both stand as dutiful godparents to Gabby, gave our son their advance Christmas gifts.  THANK YOU!  Tina and I had a little something too for them.  What a night of friendship and family bonding experience! :D

Have you tried dining at Chef’s Quarter ?

HOLIDAY STYLE

:D How far would you go for your child (or your love one) to stand out in a crowd ?

After I sourced the materials from where else but Ylaya Street in Divisoria, Manila amidst the traffic and thick volume of shoppers beating the holiday rush, my wife Tina began her part.  She hand-sewn a Santa Claus’ hat from scratch.

Our 5-year-old son, Gabby attended his preschool’s Christmas Party in this hat, which was painstakingly-made with so much love by his mom.  :D He and the rest of his batchmates joined an all-white-in-a-Santa-hat-themed party yesterday, 18 December 2009, 09-11AM  in Shakey’s Pizza, Tomas Morato in Quezon City.  It was the signal of the start of their 2-week-holiday break before their classes resume again come January 4th next year.

Can you spot our kid?

Tina and I didn’t want Gabby to just wear like what the others will be wearing so we exerted a little effort for our son’s look to be more “porma  a bit edgy.  Honestly, the lunatics in us were hoping that there’ll be an award  a prize for the cutest attendee just like when Gabby won similar title during their school’s Halloween Party this year, but yesterday was none. :(

Actually, I brought the materials to a nearby seamstress and paid PhP 80 for labor of sewing but when I showed the hat to Tina, she was disappointed with how it was done (cliche “you get what you paid for” applies) and decided she’ll do it herself.

Before I went to Manila to buy red and white satin for Tina to use for the hat, we strolled Rustan’s and Crossing’s department stores inside Shangri la mall and bought his white cropped pants and some holiday trinkets which Tina had to accesorized Gabby’s look. :D

We got his Hotwheels sneakers from Landmark in TriNoma and made him wear a pair of knee-socks (remember local basketball player, Samboy Lim?) in red and white stripes and his cheap black bow tie all from SM department store.  Glad to see his legs looked like candy canes of an elf!  :D   Can you imagine we spent more than a week going through malls in Mandaluyong and Quezon Cities to as far as Divisoria just for our son’s 2-hour-occasion?

While Gabby and his schoolmates were having fun with the games and tunes of Nobody and Jai-Ho ringing over our ears, my wife and I had 2 orders of Shakey’s Super Platter (passing on their Bunch of Lunch) which has a soup, a side salad, a piece of fried chicken, a pair of mojo potatoes, 2 slices of thick crust Hawaiian pizza and an oatmeal cookie for dessert.  We had a pitcher of house iced tea to share. :D   We were satiated over the brunch but we favor dishes from another pizza bistro place.

Gabby didn’t win in any of the games neither he bought home a prize except for a bar of VanHouten Fruit and Nut chocolate (yes, sugar load again!) but we’re happy to exposed him in an event made specially for kids of his age.

Can’t wait to join their educational field trip this January 15th and to attend their declamation contest on February (FYI : Gabby won 3rd place this year with his poem FOR  MY  COUNTRY out of 51 students). With our son’s activities, I feel I’m a kid again! :D

:D How was your pre-Christmas parties?

BOXES OF SURPRISES

:D What’s the BIGGEST box you received as gift ?   Have you received a gift box that weighs 25 kg ?

It felt like Christmas came more than a week earlier to my family.  I got 2 wonderful boxes as presents from our relatives and remittances in USD from my parents and in-laws. :D

Last Monday, 14 December 2009, on my way home from an appointment in Makati, I received a text from my wife, Tina that a box with my name was delivered at our door steps; it came from her aunt who works in London.  The generous sender happens to be one of those few clients who received prescriptions from me.  She was in town perhaps for the holiday break and was too sweet to give me this 3kg box of sweets! :D

As usual, our son, Gabby was more than excited than me to open the package!  The box has 400 grams of  Toblerone, and 2 assortments of chocolates in reusable tub and carton pack; they’re called Celebrations and Nestle Quality Street, all purchased from UK.

It was indeed a pleasant surprise to end my very tiring day! :)

Of course, I’ve been sharing it with who else but Tina and Gabby. :D  Those mini bites of maltesers, snickers and truffles are my favorites (other than the local chocnut, hehe).

Another box of chocolates called Nestle Quality Street packed in recyclable carton box was included in the box.  I was amazed that even the colored outer wrappers can be reused for compost where they’ll decompose and be use to grow plants.  What a greener way of getting rid of them after enjoying the goodies. :D

We haven’t sampled all of them until now.  It has Toffee Deluxe, Milk Choc Block, Toffee Finger, Orange Creme, Orange Chocolate Crunch, The Green Triangle, The Purple One, Vanilla Fudge, Toffee Penny, Coconut Eclair, Caramel Swirl and Strawberry Delight. Whew!  So many chocolates, so little time, LOL :D

Then the second box we got this week was unbelievable!

It was an early Christmas present from my in-laws in San Leandro, California. They sent USD for Tina to purchase this at an appliance store in a mall.

If the first box weighted 3kg, the next one tipped the scale at grossly 25 kg!!!

It was a perfect gift to replace the ‘jurassic’ one.

We cannot thank them enough for everything…I am just lucky to have good relationship with my in-laws and I’m keeping it that way. What about you? :D

We don’t get washing machines as gifts every yuletide season. :D  Now, that makes it one of unforgettable tangible gifts we received; and we’re hopeful for more blessings to come, THANK YOU!

Life is so much easier with this twin tub!

WHERE’S THE SHRIMP?

:D Do you dig seafoods ?  What about Thai cuisine ?

12 December 09, Saturday –My family and I met up with our good friend, Rob at our usual meeting place of 16 years and counting, where else but Shangri la Mall.  Rob, who works as a paramedic-nurse in a rig in the middle of nowhere, comes home every 3 months for his days off.  He treated us for a lunch and to another family-kiddie fun activity which I opted to post soon.  Hours after we kill the afternoon, we had grande cups of Starbucks and a slice of cake for Gabby.  Then our friend had to leave for an errand before dusk.

My wife, Tina and I were already eyeing a restaurant when we’re having frapuccinos.  It took me no sweat to convince her to eat dinner there so that we can just freshen up and immediately hit the sack at home (it’s also our common logical defense for being lazy to prepare dinner at home).  What I like best about my wife is her weakness when it comes to food!  It’s our kyrptonite, LOL! :D I know she’ll wry my neck for this but  it’s one of the reasons why I so love her, naks! :D   Food effortlessly binds us together! (babaw!)

And so mutually, we decided to have our evening meals at CRUSTASIA’s THAI SHRIMP HOUSE. :D

Yes! Tina, Gabby and I had pig-out again-on a dinner buffet! :D It’s a guilty pleasure but heck, what’s a holiday season without a feast? hehe.:D Important thing is we’ve enjoyed every moments together  bite!

We’re honest to state that we cannot be biased with Thai cuisine, for my wife and I cannot handle too spicy foods.  We just like it mild. Never to forget that as a family, we always put Gabby’s preference to food as our priority or at least there should be something that he can munch as we enjoy our meals together; best,  Gabby still eats for FREE in most buffets including this one. :D   Although Thai cuisine doesn’t top our list of favorites, how can you say no to seafoods ?

Crustasia and Red Crab are known for freshest seafoods cooked into Vietnamese, Singaporean and Thai dishes .  It was our first time to try their buffet and unsurprisingly, we were delighted. :D

On the spread …

Starters include salad, sushi, soup, a cripy-pita-like bread, and what won my palate were those  Thai spring rolls, Spareribs, Siomai and Chicken feet. :D

On my plates :

Perhaps unlike you, I am not fond of Chicken feet.  The first and the last time I’ve tasted them was in NZ when my cousin’s relative drove us to her favorite Chinese resto; I ‘chicken-out’ to say no to Chicken feet! :D But Crustasia’s version isn’t bad! It was tasteful actually; so with the Spareribs.  They may have the smallest bite-sized Siomai in the Metro but believe me, they’re one of the most delicious! :D   And those Thai Spring Rolls ?  I fell in love with them, LOL. :D

I was thankful that there was soup on the spread; even though it wasn’t Tom Yum, it’s enough to warm our tummies.  The spread has less dishes compared to other restos and hotels but volume isn’t always essential in a buffet but tastes.  For meat lovers, one cannot resist Crustasia’s Angus Beef Shortplate – it’s so tender, flavorful you’ll be asking for more!  Look at my surf and turf plate :

There were 2 choices of rice – the common steamed and Nasi Goreng, an Indonesian-Malay-Singaporean fried rice.

Because Tina passed on the salad, she never failed to eat greens with that dish called Lohan Mixed Vegetables that she coupled with Nasi Goreng and a few slices of Angus Beef and a piece of crab.  Her comment – She should have paired the viands with steamed rice! Not because Nasi Goreng wasn’t done right but it’s almost a complete meal like paella sans ulam! :D

Above on the left was Tina’s Nasi Goreng + her choice of viands; on the right my second plate for the entrees :  I got few slices of White Chicken in Ginger Sauce – I like it’s tenderness and it’s less gingery which I favor;  I also tried Salt and Pepper Porkribs -which wasn’t bad either;  Nasi Goreng and can’t get enough of those Angus Beef Shortplate! :D

Pasta lovers won’t be disappointed in Crustasia’s Thai Shrimp House’s dine-all-you-can!  On the buffet table :

Seafood Spaghetti and Chicken Pad Thai…

Char Kway Teow and our sampler plate of those pasta.  It isn’t Crustasia’s but just me : my personal taste still partial to Chinese noodles, Italian pasta and our very own Pancit Malabon, LOL :D

I think the only dish on the spread that we didn’t try was Catfish in Caramel Sauce. I find the name bizaare, sorry. :D   The crabs were so-so; they were tiny in size -I’m not sure if it’s because of the season or was it because it’s an eat-all-you-want.  The crabs were simply cooked with sotanghon however, if diners would like to order ala carte, there are lots of choices from their menu.  On our future visit, I’ll try to sample their Crab Maritess, the one sauteed in olive oil, white wine, garlic and chili.

To end the buffet, desserts cannot be missed!  Some tropical fruits and panna cotta in 2 colors, some fritters and tiny pudding topped with sesame seeds.

We ordered 2 refillable glasses of iced tea (at only PhP 49+ each) and paid PhP 790+ only for 2 buffet plates.  All in all we paid PhP 968.34; not bad for an eat all you want dinner :D   They have lunch buffets too!

I was almost impressed with the dishes on the spread and I think it’s a steal for its price but I wonder why there were no shrimps included in the buffet.  Did they run out of shrimps last Saturday or do they have to rename their restaurant ?  Just asking! :P   I know we can order any shrimp dish from Crustasia’s ala carte menu but can you blame me if I thought of looking for some from the buffet spread?

SHOP TILL YOUR WALLET DROPS

Do you go to tiangge ?

Have you been to Divisoria, Greenhills or any shopping bazaars lately ?  How’s your experience ?

I have been to Divisoria recently and one can’t imagine how thick the volume of shoppers there! If you’re familiar with the place, jeepneys from Recto Avenue would not go further than Reina Regente and Abad Santos Streets because stalls already populate the rest of Recto Avenue from that end point.  Had it not for my son’s school event needs that can only be sourced in Divisoria cheaply, I wouldn’t have flickered a muscle to go there at this time of the year. Thanks anyway to the existence of LRT line 2 that runs from Santolan, Pasig to Recto Avenue in 20 minutes for only less than PhP 20.

We’ve also been to Greenhills lately and the scene was almost the same. Traffic was chaotic. Shoppers were strolling with seemingly tireless feet.

08 December 2009,  Tuesday– After our hearty lunch at Emerald Garden and enjoying our own educational tour at Museo Pambata , which are both located in Roxas Boulevard, Manila, my wife Tina with our son, Gabby and I went to World Bazaar at World Trade Center out of curiosity. :D

Entrance fees to World Bazaar that ended today 16 December, were affordable at PhP 30 each.  We didn’t pay a cent because we  got 3 free tickets inserted at one of the pages of Sunday’s Manila Bulletin a couple of weeks ago.

Like any usual tiangge -that of World Trade Center’s, which was partly supported by local TV station, ABS-CBN and its artist with stalls in the bazaar, was packed with shoppers who were all busy hunting for good buys and loots! :D

When Gabby spotted one of  Kapamilya stalls, he requested us to buy him a toy from one of his favorite kiddie shows before, Super Inggo.  How can you say no to that boy with sweetest smile? :D

Tina, who’s usually not fond of shopping (Oh yes! I am so blessed to have a wife who’s not much bili-mo-ko  into shopping), spotted this simple Korea-made-nylon zippered bag with newspaper print in brown hue. She was hesitant at first to buy it but everything ended with me paying for it. No worries for it’s a best buy at PhP 250. However,  our superpowers and talents on haggling were not put to use; we failed to convince the saleslady to give it at even lower rate. :(

Tina has been using it on her duty for few days  now and it has passed its one week line!

Sulit na din! :D

Admittedly, good buys for me are purchases with quality and are reasonably priced; things that were scrutinized first by employees paid to do QC (quality control) before being sold at stores.  In short, I like buying things mostly from established shops and malls.

Back in my High School and College days when my parents were paying for my shopping spree, I was so brand conscious!  It was so funny recalling those times when I used to be like a ‘walking billboard’ :D   There was one instance when my would-be-sister-in-law then first joined us in our family Christmas shopping during the late 90s, she was surprised that my parents spent PhP 10K +  for my branded pair of jeans and shirt alone!  However, when I started working and after I got my first salary years ago, I learned to value hard-earned money, big time!  Since then, I have known the art of how to control unnecessary spending (but haven’t mastered it fully(?)  :)

Controlling expenses is quite difficult in seasons like Christmas when almost everyone expects to receive something;  urging most of us to shop and even haggle at tiangges to stretch the budget to its fullest and to delay the thinning of the wallets. :D

What I know about bargaining is that buyer should start haggling at half of the original price.  Do you also do the same?  What are your tips on shopping ? Do you shop weeks in advance or do you also enjoy the holiday rush?

Things have changed greatly for me and my family.  We value our priorities before buying anything.

What’s your take on shopping during holidays?

Do you think we can spend Christmas without shopping?  After all, what’s important is we remember the REASON for the season. :D

HOMEMADE & HEARTFELT

Are you like me who believe that the family who eats and prays together, stays together? :D

No it isn’t Noche Buena yet but thankfully, my wife, Tina found time exactly a week ago to prepare a meal that Gabby and I love eating! Pasta!  :D   She made a little twist on the usual ingredients of carbonara.  Instead of using the usual spaghetti or fettuccini, penne or linguini, she personally hand-picked a pack of pasta-shapes with spinach from the grocery shelf to make the dish more enticing for our kid; and unlike other version with  bacon bits, she opted to incorporate Purefoods Fiesta ham. :D   OK, I must admit; I made her used it, LOL. :D  I like it and another brand of ham which I’ll try to feature before the holidays.

Should you be interested in trying Tina’s recipe, here are the ingredients : San Remo Vegeroni Pasta Shapes, Sabroso Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Alaska All Purpose Cream,  Jolly Button Mushroom, Carnation Evaporated Milk, Gold Medal All Purpose Flour, Kraft Eden Melt-Sarap Cheese, Anchor Family Spread Butter (our favorite!), carrots, bell peppers, salt and pepper to taste and the so-called star of Noche Buena – Purefoods Fiesta Ham! :D

Look at those pasta!  :D

STEPS :

1. Boil pasta to al dente; within 9 – 10 minutes; add a few drops of olive oil, a pinch of salt, and a teaspoon of butter.  Drain the pasta and set aside.

2. Cut the carrots and bell peppers into small cubes; do the same with the button mushrooms; set aside.

3. Slice Purefoods Fiesta Ham and cut into cubes. Fry until golden brown; set aside.

4.  For the carbonara sauce :   Melt 2/3 Anchor butter. Add and mix 2 – 3 tetra packs of Alaska All-Purpose Cream with 2 cans of Carnation Evaporated Milk in a sauce pan.   Grate Kraft Eden Melt Sarap Cheese and add it to the mixture.  Save some grated cheese for toppings.  Add salt and pepper to taste. Bring into a boil with constant stirring.  Add remaining ingredients (mushroom, carrots, bell peppers) and simmer for 2 — 3 minutes.

5.  Pour a fraction of the sauce over cooked pasta on a plate and top it with ham and grated cheese.

6.  Serve with a smile and with all your heart, naks! :D

Actually, Tina’s secret ingredient was the fun bonding moments she had with Gabby while cooking.  And my participation?  I’m their food tester  taster, LOL :D

:D   What’s your favorite home-cooked meal ?

LEARNING BEYOND BOOKS

08 December, 2009, Tuesday – After we had a hearty late lunch in a classic Chinese restaurant, EMERALD GARDEN in Manila, we explored a place that is exclusively dedicated to fun and learning. :D

My wife, Tina and I usually maximized our days off from work by spending extra quality time with our preschooler son, Gabby.  And whenever we go out, we always make sure that Gabby will enjoy.  Just a couple of weeks ago, we went to PHILIPPINE SCIENCE CENTRUM in Riverbanks, Marikina City and seven days back we had another special trip to MUSEO PAMBATA in Roxas Blvd., Manila.

This interactive children’s museum allows visitors, both kids and young-at-hearts to touch exhibits, play and experienced everything hands-on. It’s a place that encourages a total-senses-child learning.  I believe in that too –I always tell my nursing students and reviewees that ‘learning is easy when all senses are utilized’.

Since Museo Pambata was only established in 1994 when Tina and I were already college students, we had no chance to be there during our wonder years.  Nevertheless, it isn’t too late to become a kid again; not that we’re having 2nd childhood already, heck no! we’re too young to have dementia and all, LOL :D But with Museo Pambata, the kids in us were unleashed once more! :D

Illustration above via MUSEO PAMBATA.

Who says learning can’t be fun? :D

The museum is divided into several sections : PAMILIHANG-BAYAN / Market Place,  PAGLAKI KO / Career Options, KATAWAN KO / Body Works,  TUKLAS!/Science Through Discovery, MAYNILA NOON / Old Manila, KALIKASAN/Environment, and many more.

I personally found the MARKET PLACE as most amusing.  Kids can assume to tend a store or pretend shopping in wet and dry sections or perhaps in a shoe or drug stores.

In PAGLAKI KO / Career Options, Museo Pambata gives children a bird’s eye view of work opportunities when they grow old.  Gabby enjoyed becoming a community worker for a while…

Money matters! :D Even kids should learn that hard-earned money should be valued at all cost.

There’s a small section near the Market Place where kids get to feel how it is to be in rural areas of the country…

While the Market Place seemed the most amusing, KATAWAN KO /Body Works section’s the most interesting for us. :D   Just like in the old  Science Centrum years ago, there’s a similar version of those anatomical parts in humongous scales! It’s hard to resist not to go through the exhibit’s main entrance – a wide-mouth! One will pass through it down to esophagus, stomach, and intestines and out to you-know-where! :D

In TUKLAS / Science Through Discovery, there are similar pieces that we’ve seen already in PHILIPPINE SCIENCE CENTRUM but Museo Pambata’s versions are more well-maintained; thus, more inviting for visitors.

What’s a museum without retelling a history ?  On the first floor of the museum are 2 fascinating exhibits — KALIKASAN / Environment on the left side, and on the right, MAYNILA NOON / Old Manila.

Have you seen a small scale of Binondo Church or Basilica Minor de San Lorenzo Ruiz? FYI, It’s a nice replica where visitors can go inside and take pictures of the church. :D   This section of Old Maynila also brings back museum goers to the era of Galleon Trade and the days when Meralco Tranvia de Manila was still one of the modes of transportation in Manila.  Sayang, authorities could have kept this tram until now for people to appreciate and still serve its purpose like the tram in San Francisco. Oh,well, at least we have the LRTs now. :D

Who says learning history is always boring ? :D

I cannot imagine Pinoy History without Dr. Jose Rizal, Katipunan and the evolution of flags…

The old Pinoy house, furnitures and all also caught our interest…

Some important aspects of Mother Nature is replicated at the section called KALIKASAN /Environment…

Do you agree with me that every Pinoy kids should be brought to this fun place ?  I wish parents are reading this post.

Have you been to Museo Pambata ?  How was your experience ?

MUSEO PAMBATA, Roxas Boulevard corner South Drive, Manila (It’s beside US Embassy in Manila and at the end corner of Kalaw Ave. and Roxas Blvd.)  Entrance fee is PhP 100 for kids and adults, walk-in. Teachers with valid ID are free; Manila residents are given discount.  Museum is closed every Mondays.  Museum hours : 8AM-5PM (Aug-March) and 9AM-5PM (April-July).

WE LOVE TRAVELING !

More than a ton of photos and various souvenirs from ref magnets to picture frames, we collect memories when we travel. :D Moments spent together on a trip aboard a plane or a tourist bus going to a particular destination are the most precious and priceless experiences we cherish as a family. :D

Blame my mom who greatly exposed me and my 3 brothers to leisure and pleasure of having vacations especially whenever our dad comes home for his break as an OFW during  our wonder years.  We’ve been to some of the most wonderful places both here and abroad. I’ve never explored the rest of the country but have enjoyed Ilocos, Baguio, La Union, Subic, Laguna, Batangas, Tagaytay, Cavite, Quezon, Cebu, CDO, Roxas City and recently, Boracay.

I can still vividly remember my very first trip abroad  with my entire family happened during my High School years;  it was via Cathay Pacific bound for Hong Kong (where else?!) and was followed by 2 more travels to the same city of  lights.  Several years and pounds after, we spent 22 glorious days in California and Las Vegas.

My wife, Tina and I chose Bangkok, Thailand for our honeymoon 2 days after we got married back in January 2004.  About 37 weeks after, our little bundle of joy, Gabby was born. :D   Fastforward to few more months –at exactly 2 weeks after I sworn my oath as a physician, my parents treated me and my family to a 7-week-vacation in Auckland, New Zealand.  En Route to NZ, we had an overnight stay in Brunei Darrussalam and toured the city of Bendar Seri Begawan for half day :D   We also spent transit hours at Brisbane Airport, Australia.  Few more months after and we’re off to Hong Kong again. :D

Trimming down my favorite travel places into 3 isn’t easy.  I’d say HONG KONG,  NEW ZEALAND,  and a toss between USA and THAILAND are countries I consider unforgettable!

In times of  problems at work, news like Martial Law in the South and recessions in the other parts of the globe, don’t you just want to take a deep breath, pause from all these hassles and just reminisce those fun moments spent traveling with your love ones?  :D

(Scroll over the photos for the name of the place.)

HONG KONG : New Year of 2007 (We love this tiny country for being a fantastic shopping and dining haven in Asia!  I love everything in Hong Kong but I wish their cab drivers would know more English!)

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND , Summer of 2005  (The place that celebrates mornings and New Years first above all countries! We love the weather; we experienced a single digit centigrade! I miss Kelly Tarlton’s Ocean Adventure, the Sky City Tower, Northshore and Pupuke Lake! (yes, you read it right!  try reading it again slowly, LOL!), I miss Halfmoon Bay, Downtown Auckland and Waiheke Island.  I miss Westfield and Botany Malls, I miss the 5PM-closing time of malls and other establishments! I miss this place where Mother Nature is always at her best!)

USA & THAILAND : toss between California to Las Vegas and Bangkok :D   (We stayed in LA at my aunt and uncle’s place before, and joined a-9-day tour from LA-San Francisco-LA.  We’ve been to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Manns Chinese Theater in Hollywood Boulevard, Santa Monica, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Carmel, Monterey, San Francisco, Fresno and National Parks like Sequoia and Yosemite.  We’ve been to Anaheim – Disneyland and Universal Studios in Hollywood; watched Shamu the Killer Whale in San Diego’ s Sea World and stayed in defunct Stardust and the ever fabulous MGM Grand hotel in LV.  In Vegas, we had bliss at hotel hopping – from Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, NY NY, Bellagio and Paris Hotels. Life can’t be better than those moments!    In BANGKOK, we stayed at Amarri Watergate Hotel and walked the Jatujak and Swan Loom Markets; best part of our trip then–it was sweetest trip ever! Do I need to explain why?)

My top 3 places I wish to experience before I die :  PARIS, FRANCE,  ROME & VENICE, ITALY,  TOKYO, JAPAN

I want to bring my family to Paris and do nothing but breath the air in Eiffel Tower.

I want to explore Rome and walk the steps in Da Vinci Code :D   I want to see how faint Mona Lisa’s smile is at Louvre Museum.

I want to eat authentic sushi and sashimi and ramen and lots of tempura and cross the streets of Tokyo amidst its neon lit forest!

And the list goes on… for as long as the budget allows us to do so, the world remains big for people like us who made traveling a little passion. :D

:D Where would you spend your dream vacation?

:D Can you be more generous in sharing your most remarkable travels ?

This is post is my entry to the blog contest of  my newest blog buddy, KG  (applause, applause!)

Prize will go to nobody but Tina if I’ll win :D

To end, here’s my son’s wink taken at you know where…

HALF-BLOOD CHINESE (PART 2)

We love Chinese foods. :D

It would probably require me or my wife, Tina (or worse, wait for our son, Gabby who’s only in Kindergarten) to enroll in culinary school (which we love to do in the near future) or to have several attempts at home-cooking before we can come up from scratch, a perfectly prepared and steamed dimsum!

We value money. :D

How do you stretch your budget nowadays on food without compromising your own cravings?  Your thoughts may be relative with mine –either you cook at home, or eat out at those food places where figures on the menu won’t injure the pockets.

We love value-for-money Chinese foods! :D

We’re just glad that we have finally tried EMERALD GARDEN right across US Embassy and beside Bayview Park Hotel in Roxas Blvd., Manila. Yes, you read it right; it was only yesterday that we’ve experienced what we’ve been missing!  We’ve proven truth to a few posts about how this restaurant offers affordability coupled with great tasting dishes!

This Chinese restaurant is unique on its own.  When we entered Emerald Garden, we were politely greeted by the wait staff who immediately led us to our table. Gabby liked its spacious dining area that’s far from being intimidating. Emerald Garden, in fact has a homey-casual ambiance without pretentious decors whatsoever.  We also noticed that all servers, neatly clad in office attire-looking uniforms, were generally geriatric ’matured’ compared to other restaurants’. We took that as a plus points on them for being focused and attentive, most of all friendly to their clients.

On our table :

FRIED CRAB STICKS, PhP 140 +  and HAKAO, PhP 75+

One of Gabby’s favorite finger foods (at least for him) is kani tempura in Japanese or  fried crabsticks for Chinese; so automatically, in the absence of pizza that he also likes, this should be ordered.  Emerald’s version is simple, logically priced and more importantly, it satisfied gabby’s picky appetite.

I love almost anything with shrimps, so Hakao is also a must for us when dining Chinese.  Tina and I shared similar views on Emerald’s Shrimp dumplings : they were only 3 compared to other restos that serve 4 per order; their Hakao’s wrappers were a bit dry but at least they came with those plump shrimps!

It was only 2005 during our 7-week-vacation in Auckland, New Zealand when Tina and I first tasted steamed dumplings called Cheong fan after we enjoyed a lunch treat by one of my cousin’s relatives.  After the first bite, it has always been one of those Oriental dishes we look in a menu. But sadly, not all Chinese restaurants here offer Shrimp Rice Rolls a.k.a Shrimp Cheong fan.  We haven’t explored the rest of the Metro’s food places yet but I only know of Le Ching’s Tea House and Gloria Maris that serve these shrimp goodies until we truly fell in love with Emerald Garden’s.

SHRIMP RICE ROLLS, (I forgot it’s exact price but probably more or less PhP 75+ too).  Believe me, they actually taste greater than how they look in my photos.  The wrappers were not-too-thin-neither-too-thick;  they’re almost perfect in consistency.  Its sauce isn’t too salty nor too sweet.

Despite our instant infatuation for Emerald Garden’s Shrimp Rice Rolls, most of its loyal patrons would never let a dining experience pass without having SIOPAO!

BOLA-BOLA SIOPAO, small PhP 30; large PhP 85.  We were still lucky to order even the small ones at nearly 2 in the afternoon for we heard they easily ran out of these great steamed yummies especially the large siopaos as early as few minutes after 7AM (Emerald Garden opens at 7AM; closes at 2PM and reopens for dinner at 6PM onwards).

I cannot blame them. These Bola-Bola Siopao are really delicious! The buns were the softest like that of Kowloon’s.  The filling has those chives but surprisingly not overpowering and just flavorful!  We would not mind having these for breakfast!

After stating my 2-cents worth about some yummies from Emerald Garden, our votes also go to this noodle dish that sky-rocketted our palates to other planets, LOL :D

EMERALD FRIED NOODLES, small PhP 140 (also available in medium & large orders).   Look at those fuchsia colored quailed eggs that are far from being usually orange!   Aren’t they enticingly different?  This Fried Noodle dish has generous volume of veggies and very tender breaded meat, all cut into strings and mixed with its tasteful  thick sauce!  The noodle itself was so good sans other ingredients making this as one of the best I’ve tasted! …Excuse me, I’m salivating as I post this. :D

In one phrase, it was absolutely, heaven on a plate! :D

How many restaurants can serve all these or at least similar dishes for less than PhP 700 all in ?

Before me paying the bill, my wife with her sweet smile asked me if there’s Emerald Garden branch near our place in Quezon City; an evidence that this resto won even Tina’s discriminating taste :D

We’re going back, definitely!

:D Have you tried dining at Emerald Garden?  What dishes do you like best?

:D Where do you go on your usual Chinese food craving?

PS : Why do you think Tina, Gabby and I had to be in Manila on a Tuesday afternoon ?  Abangan! :D

HALF-BLOOD CHINESE (PART 1)

One of the simple pleasures in life that I am enjoying is having a wife whose appetite  cravings mimics mine :D   I am blessed with Tina being a foodie in her own right and you can blame genetics, for our  5-year-old-would-be-chef-son, Gabby has already developed his own preference too.

Other than Japanese, Italian and  Pinoy foods, we like Chinese!  It has always been a topic of our usual talks that both Tina and I can probably thrive either in Hong Kong, Mainland China or best, Japan basically because of our love for Asian foods. :D   At times, I would imagine how wonderful it is to live near Binondo and Ongpin Streets in Sta. Cruz, Manila where access to authentic oriental cuisine is just a step away.  On the otherhand, I am also disillusioned with the daily traffic in that heart of Manila which is considered as one of its busiest business districts. When we miss going to Hong Kong or at least Ongpin, we’re just grateful for the many restaurants around the Metro that more or less offer the same menu. :D

I don’t know about you but we like dimsum and dumplings; we love hot thick soup; peking duck and lots of flavorful fried rice! (we’re not eating it anyway on a daily basis and perhaps like you, we go easy on salt and cholesterol intake too, lol) :D

Sometimes when we’re in the mood, it would only take an eye-to-eye  between me and Tina to  know we’re craving for Chinese! :D   Need I say more?

It only took exactly 7-day apart when we last enjoyed 2 of our favorite Chinese food places -Superbowl of China and Flavors of China.

On November 30, Tina, Gabby and I had dinner at Flavors of China in Tomas Morato…On our table :

Complimentary SHRIMP CRACKERS (Gabby’s favorite; he always asks for a refill!), SEAFOOD BEANCURD SOUP, PhP 175+ (We just love this soup! affordable yummy!), FLAVORS of CHINA SEAFOOD FRIED RICE, PhP 190+ (We like it for its smoked taste plus can you resist those fish roe on top of flavorful fried rice with what else but shrimps and scallops?),  BEEF BROCCOLI FLOWER, PhP 215+ (its thick soyed sauce and freshly blanched and crisp broccoli makes it so delicious!), BOLA-BOLA SIOPAO, PhP 75+ (it may not be the best siopao in town but it doesn’t disappoint too), STEAMED SHARKSFIN, PhP 85+.  and we had 2 glasses of riped mango shake at PhP 65 each.

We were looking for SHRIMP DUMPLINGS or HAKAO in their menu but we’re told by the waiter that they already dephase it :(

On November 23, we had a lazy afternoon but a very fulfilling early dinner at SUPERBOWL OF CHINA in Gateway Mall :D

Not in the photo : Complimentary Prawn Crackers.  Our SBC favorites : SUPERBOWL LEMON CHICKEN, PhP 260+ (it’s our favorite version to date),  LECHON MACAU, PhP 205+ (Tina dislikes the sauce; biased with this restaurant’s ),  YANG CHOW FRIED RICE, PhP 199+, and our best order whenever we dine at SBC : TAHO, PhP 70+ that comes with the usual tapioca and caramel sauce! :D   Bottomless Lemonade, PhP 79+ completed the meal.

As you may know, Taho is rich in protein! Simply satisfying! :D

I am missing DONG BEI DUMPLINGS in Yuchengco Street!  Note to self : I have to bring my family to Ongpin whenever possible.

It has also been years since we last dined at Gloria Maris.

Of course, there’s always our other favorite, MANN HANN  and the affordable LUK YUEN and LE CHING TEA HOUSE.

UPNEXT : my post on EMERALD GARDEN RESTAURANT :D

:D Do you like Chinese dishes ?  What are your favorites ?

FRIDAY AT THE MOVIES

Last weekend, Tina, Gabby and I went to Eastwood City to watch the movie adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, A Christmas Carol.

While I was a bit sleepy during the entire movie, although not implying that it’s boring or does not interest me; our 5-year-old son, Gabby enjoyed it to the fullest!  :D Surprisingly, he understood the story and somehow felt what the movie is all about.

Shame on me I haven’t read its book (my weak defense : it wasn’t required during our days in school so i was busy reading others, LOL) but I can’t deny that its animated version was so digitally enhanced surpassing my expectations to the point of being so rapidly told that one will be left out by the pacing in a blink!

What made me see the movie with my family other than the simple reason that Gabby wanted to watch it, was because of the voices behind its characters - Jim Carey, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright Penn etc.

It’s a movie about how an old man’s life became more meaningful after being haunted by several Christmas apparitions.

A Christmas Carol is perfect for the holiday; go see it yourself. :D

Meanwhile, I enjoyed watching trailers of  upcoming movies due 2010 more …

Gabby wants to watch this “SQUEAKQUEL” as soon as it’s released…

While Tina can’t wait to see this :

After seeing a few movie trailers for next year, I googled them and found a ton of exciting movies to catch; and here’s my list :

1.  The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

2.  Alice in Wonderland

3.  A Nightmare on Elm Street

4.  Shrek Forever After

5.  Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time

6.  Toy Story 3

7. Sex and the City 2

8. Eclipse

9. Knight and Day

10. Men in Black 3

11. The Green Lantern

12. Iron Man 2

13. Robin Hood

14. I Love You Phillip Morris

15. Sherlock Holmes

And many more movies to watch out for —> here :D

What was the last movie you saw?

What movies would you like to watch next year?

IT’S OVER!

I have been quiet about this but truth of the matter is, we have decided to finally part ways.

I have thought about this a thousand times,

and even tried to save and reconnect the thing between us.

A relationship becomes futile when one is unhappy.

We’ve enjoyed our togetherness but everything has its end.

Parting is truly a sweet sorrow.

But we all have to move on.

Although it’s so difficult,

we all have to make decisions.

We only wish for strength to withstand temptations.

It has been two weeks and counting… :D

HO HO HO

Did Do you believe in Santa Claus ?

We bumped into him in Shangri la mall last Sunday and our son, Gabby took the chance of having a photo-op with him.  It was the first time he saw Santa in the flesh!  The red clad old man even gave him 2 pieces of candies. :D   Perhaps he really knows that our son has always been naughty  nice. :D   He is super nice!

Back in the late 80s, we used to hang old knee socks at our capiz-windows a day prior to Christmas thinking that all our wishes to Santa Claus will be granted.  I even wondered how Santa does the gift-giving despite our lack of chimney and a fire place, LOL :D   Everything was seemed to be magical until my brothers, cousins and I saw our grandmother putting in packs of  sliced cheese and some candies into our socks which apparently any kid would not wish over toys. :D

How did you discover the myth legend about Santa?

How do you explain Santa’s being to your kids?

In as much as we want Gabby to believe in flying reindeers and Santa’s existence, he has a mind of his own now and somehow knows how fantasy differs from what’s real. Still, he gets excited with the cheers that the holiday brings.

HO HO HO! :P

IN AN INSTANT

With our fast paced lifestyle, it’s not surprising that everything is done in an instant. For most people who regard time as gold, it’s essential that everything should be completed in a press of a button or even in a wink.

And filling the tummy isn’t an exception.  Aren’t you thankful that we have fastfoods, instant coffee, instant noodles, instant whatever? :D

Few hours after our lunch last Sunday, our son, Gabby was enjoying his favorites – a slice of pizza and a few pieces of soft buttered garlic sticks while my wife, Tina and I found a food stall at the basement of Shangri la mall that offers cheap skewered fish balls, shrimp balls, chicken balls, crab sticks and many more for only PhP 29 – 32+ per stick; we added PhP 10 for each cup of noodles + soup and voila, we enjoyed a delicious SHABU SHABU in an instant! :D

Although admittedly it’s not-that-healthy, one cannot deny the fact that it can be very satisfying! We only spent PhP 120 or so to taste and experience instant happiness with the family! :D

What’s your take on instant food? Are you the type of person who can never live without a microwave oven? hahaha! :D What instant things other than food do you enjoy?
