TRICK OR TREATING 2009

Guess where we had fun the whole day today?

IMG_4924

The queue was apparently looooong but heck, we were there to wait for our son to be registered and got his coupons for the participating high-end shops’ Halloween goodies.

We woke up at around 6AM without electricity and less rain but with strong winds.  It was typhoon signal # 3 in Metro Manila since yesterday because Santi a.k.a. Mirinae had slammed via Quezon Province en route to Batangas thus hitting the capital and nearby provinces.  Thankfully, it weakened into a tropical storm this afternoon and allowed the streets to be dry and the sun to show up.

Like Christmas, Halloween is much anticipated fun-filled event especially by kids like our own.  Come hell, or high waters, it should be celebrated :D

Honestly, our 5-year-old son, Gabby initially wanted to wear his dream this Halloween. So weeks ago, his mom, Tina and I bought him a toque, an apron and a napkin as accessory for he wishes to be a chef someday.  But when Tina got him a face paint kit from Market, Market 2 days ago,  we decided for Gabby to wear his last year’s costume to his preschool party which was held yesterday morning, and to TRICK or TREATING today at a mall…

My youngest brother who reported to his work this morning somewhere in Makati texted me that it’s safe to go to Greenbelt 5 for there was no traffic and sky was getting clearer. So we didn’t waste time and headed off to G5.

SPOTTED :

4

We saw Mr. Edu Manzano at House of Obagi with someone who chose not to be photographed.  We really appreciated his efforts of posing for our son for few sec and even told Gabby, “You look good!” 3x!!!  - Now, I know Mr. Manzano’s sooo honest! :D

At  GREYONE SOCIAL  :   Ninjas alike!5

At  ZARA :  When Gabby approached their counter and handed in the coupon in exchange for their Halloween treats, the people of Zara were all smile at him.  They admired him and his costume so much. We like Zara and we love their staff at G5 even more! :D

6

At HIVE : This furniture and interiors store’s staffs were also welcoming. Thank you for being kind to kids! May your sales double up in the coming days…

78

At  YOH-GURT FROZ FRO-YO :  The yogurt that tops our favorites was one of the sponsors :D 910

We became excited when we saw Pepper Lunch’s banner at G5.  It’s high time for PL to sizzle it their way to Makati.  I wish they’ll have Quezon City branch too.  We’ve tried Pepper Lunch a few times already (and did some posts here) in Powerplant and Shangri la malls.  Incidentally, we also passed by a shop that also features PL owner’s (Chuvaness) shirt line Heather Miss Grey.

  IMG_4994IMG_4958

At CROCS : Gabby smiled when he saw clones of the slippers he’s wearing :D   …We also asked Gabby to pose near Rolex watch store that became a news item when it was robbed few days ago. It’s business as usual as if nothing happened.

1112

Then at half hour past one in the afternoon, we ate lunch at John and Yoko (I’ll post it soon).  After we chow down, we went to Glorietta to buy some supplies.

No tricks, just treats… trick or treat 2009

Sure, anyone can afford all these but not HAPPINESS that came with it. :D

Gabby’s SMILES and OUR FAMILY BONDING MOMENTS are simply priceless.

PS : Did I tell you that Gabby won the CUTEST KINDERGARTEN PUPIL award (note : not the scariest) in their preschool’s halloween party yesterday?  I cannot blame them; our son is really adorable :D

IMG_4907IMG_4913

Did you go trick or treating too? :D   Happy Halloween!

PASTA ALL YOU WANT

How many plates can you finish when a great deal called PASTA ALL YOU CAN, ALL DAY, EVERYDAY is offered only at PhP 150?

IMG_4840

We’ve been wanting to try this great deal for the loooongest time but it’s only yesterday when the stars and the heavenly planets conspired that we found time.

My wife, Tina, our 5-year-old son, Gabby and I trooped to JOEY PEPPERONI PIZZERIA at their branch in Fort Bonifacio, just in the corner of Mckinely Avenue, Taguig City and had our late lunch. It was our first to sample their pizza and pasta and gladly, we’re not disappointed. :D

IMG_4842CLASSIC CAESAR SALAD, PhP 110 +.  Crisp romaine lettuce, bacon bits, crunchy croutons served with Caesar dressing.

Ever since Gabby had his first taste of this pizza a few months back from another Italian restaurant, it has become one of his staples whenever dining out. We’re proud that our son has developed his own preference to food and at an early age, he knows his palate very well.  Tina and I can’t complain about his choice of flavor; this one’s simple yet deliciously fulfilling.

IMG_4850QUATTRO FORMAGGI (Four Cheeses) 8″ pizza,  PhP 165 +, also available at  12″ at PhP 335+.  This thin crust pizza has no toppings but parmesan, fontina, mozzarella and ricota.  Sarap!

The pasta dishes included in the promo are…IMG_4851PESTO (original price PhP 145 +).   Made of basil, cashew nuts and parmesan cheese in olive oil.  Pesto tops my list of favorites of all pasta dishes.  Joey Pepperoni’s may not be the best pesto I’ve tasted but it’s not bad either. I like it.

IMG_4856CARBONARA (original price PhP 155 +).   Pepper cream sauce and bacon bits in spaghetti.  Joey Pepperoni Pizzeria’s version of this usual pasta got my wife’s vote, considering her discriminating taste.  It’s best eaten immediately after served so as to avoid the pasta being dried as it can absorbs the creamy sauce in a few minutes.

IMG_4865BOLOGNESE (orginal price at PhP 175+). Classic meat sauce.  It isn’t as good as the other two but then again, perhaps it’s just me.

FYI, Joey Pepperoni’s PASTA ALL YOU CAN promo has those three dishes in big servings that even foodies like me and my wife who both have huge appetite and great passion for eating may surrender easily.  Honestly, since those pasta are prepared no less than usual, they’re all deliciously satisfying that I only had 3 plates (yes, I sampled all of them, hehehe) and Tina only had a plate and a half (I ate the rest of her second serving ) of Carbonara.  I tell you, with PhP 150 deal of yummies for more than a plate, you can never complain.

For the three of us, the winner among those we’ve tasted at JP’s pizzeria is…IMG_4870FROZEN CAPPUCCINO MUD PIE, PhP 90 +.  This definitely is one of the reasons to visit JP again.  It’s so delectable that we find it hard to resist. Satisfied the sweet tooth in all of us, hands down. It’s enormous serving and cheap price gives everyone a chance to enjoy life’s simple pleasures :D   It’s such a perfect sweet ending to a binge self-indulgence of carbo-rich plates.

We had their iced tea, bottomless for only PhP 50.

Friendly and polite service, affordable good food, high ceiling + casual dining ambiance = we like!

The only thing I dislike with Fort branch is the presence of a communal toilet. It would be nice if they can have separates for both genders and a bonus for physically challenged and/or a family room with diaper deck for babies. :D   Nonetheless, we’ll surely visit again, not only that branch but else where.

IMG_4874IMG_4858

This has been another fun-filled, budget-friendly dine-out with the two people I love the most.

Life has been so generous. :D

———-

PS : After that hearty meal at JP’s, we concluded that we’re nothing compared to the YOUNG (as in she looks like early or 20 something) LADY from Las Piñas City whose picture appears at the promo card at JP’s tables because she at  present, holds the record for having enjoyed NINE PASTA plates!  Can you handle that?

Joey Pepperoni Pizzeria. Fairways Tower Condominium 5th Avenue corner McKinley Ave., Fort Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City. Other branches and details can be found at their website –> here.

BORACAY SERIES : NATURE AT HER BEST

This is my 6th and last post in this series.

1

Few meters and a tricycle ride from Boat Station 1, we found ourselves out of the beach and into another fascinating place where Mother Nature still reigns supreme…

IMG_4620

On one of our days in the island, my wife, Tina, our son, Gabby and I visited the small but interesting butterfly farm at Fairways and Bluewater in Boracay.  It only took us PhP 30 of tricycle ride, PhP 60 per adult entrance fee (Gabby’s free!) and a few minutes to appreciate these lovely winged creatures…

IMG_4606 We kept our silence while in the vicinity so as not to disturbed the butterflies and…

IMG_4619

more butterflies and surprisingly, these nocturnals…IMG_4609

Who would have thought that those delicate butterflies can exist symbiotically in this farm with an owl and a few number of bats ?

IMG_4600

It was our first encounter with bats and man, the smell was not good!  But at least they remained  in deep sleep while we’re in their midst.

It was a sort of an impromptu educational field trip for our son :D

IMG_4592IMG_4614

Our Boracay break may have been too short but we enjoyed it, definitely. :D  IMG_4645

Gabby got some shells, cut corals and a handful of powdery sand from the shore.  And before we left the island paradise, we spent our last morning at the beach as early as 6.  We had another dip and took a stroll once more.

IMG_4643IMG_4710

It’s difficult not to miss Boracay, particularly Boat Station One where sand is finest and everything is surreal.

IMG_4430IMG_4493

We can’t be thankful enough for the opportunity to visit one of the best beaches in the world.  We’re so glad that the weather was best  all throughout our days in Boracay and our flights went smoothly.

IMG_4487IMG_4357

Life cannot be better than this. :D

BORACAY SERIES : FEAST FOR THE SENSES

This is my 5th post in a series…

1

As I walked several meters away from Willy’s Rock at Boat Station 1 in Boracay; I left my wife, Tina and our 5-year-old son, Gabby shortly while they were busy playing on the powdery sand,  I came across this exquisitely themed beach front restaurant and bar at the far end of the white beach on our second day in island last week.

2

With wooden tables and large cushioned couches in vibrant and attractive hues,  I didn’t pass the chance to sneak in and inquired about their lunch and dinner.

3

At half hour past 9 in the morning, I found myself too early for KASBAH, an amazing Moroccan food place located at few meters from the shores of one of the greatest beaches in the globe.

IMG_4509

The gemstone colors of tables and seats and Moroccan lamps all over the place are so fascinating that one may experience a slice of Northern Africa.  With priceless ambiance and authentic interiors, I can only expect nothing but the best cuisine.

The moment I entered Kasbah, I asked a staff for their menu. I became interested with some tangine and couscous in a heart beat.

IMG_4508IMG_4513IMG_4514IMG_4507

I was too early to spot Kasbah; I was told they usually open 11AM onwards.  The chef and his staff were not yet around when I came.

I could have tasted Seafood Tagine and Saffron, Couscous Lamb Tagine and perhaps Baklava for dessert…

No worries…

No regrets…

There’s always a next time .. :)

Have you experienced Morocco in Boracay?

BORACAY SERIES : A FOODIES’ PARADISE

This is my 4th post in a series.

I felt I gained 10 pounds  kilos after our brief family break in BORACAY  last week. :D   You can’t blame me, the island itself is an epicurean paradise; there are tons of gastronomic temptations…

Can you resist this?halowichCOUPLE ICE, PhP 260.  This is one of  Red Bean Halowich’s refreshing delights.  Thinly shaved ice available in  2 flavors- either milk or mango serves as the base.  We chose mango ice.

89

Toppings include corn cereals and red mung beans and a ton of tropical fruits -slices of bananas, pineapples, mangoes, watermelons and cherries with a huge swirl of vanilla soft ice cream.

 67

The moment we walked through D’mall in Boat Station 2 and saw Red Bean Halowich’s window display, we never had second thoughts of entering their airconditioned restaurant to try their iced sweet treats. We only ordered that big bowl and a glass of iced tea for Gabby.  Couple Ice, second to their biggest serving, is huge enough to be shared by 2 to 3 people.   The bowl reminds me of Red Mango’s, except that Halowich’s is more enormous in size and contains ice, not frozen yogurt.  Nevertheless, we love it.  Ask my family. :D

45

While Halowich offers the best alternative to the famous Pinoy Halo-Halo,  ARIA  for us (my wife Tina, our son Gabby and I) is another must-try restaurant in the island.  A vibrant and relaxing vacation in Boracay is never complete without tasting the best pizza and best pasta from ARIA CUCINA ITALIA.

IMG_4563IMG_4585IMG_4562IMG_4590

The fast and friendly wait staff who attended to our table told me that Aria is owned by an American restaurateur with some foreign partners; they also co-own Cafe del Sol, a coffee shop beside Aria and a Japanese restaurant located in the middle of D’Mall.

This was my plate from Aria…

IMG_4583

Gabby was asking for pizza on our second day at the beach.  As we try not to eat anything that can also be found in malls and Italian restaurants and fastfoods  in Manila, we sat in Aria and gave in to our son’s request.  We ordered…IMG_4570QUATTRO FORMAGGI, PhP 475 +.  It’s hard to overlook Aria’s finest woodfire oven-baked pizzas.   Aria’s version of four-cheeses pizza is light yet satisfying and flavorful.  The amazingly delicious crust is topped with four different cheeses : pecorino, feta, parmesan and mozzarella.  :D   Gabby had his smile up to his ears when the pizza arrived at our table.

IMG_4565BOSCAIOLA, PhP 370+.  A creamy sauce of mushroom, ham and parmesan cheese on pasta of your choice.  We had the white sauce on penne. Wow, sarap!

There are many choices in Aria’s menu that are worth a try.  There are insalata or salads, meat dishes, antipasti and other flavors of pizza and variants of pasta.  Did I tell you already that Aria has wine selection too ?

What to have for dinner in Boracay ?

A few meters from the shore, as dusk comes to the island, beach front restaurants transform the coast line into a seafood and meat buffet, al fresco dining.

IMG_4395IMG_4397IMG_4398IMG_4400

What’s a  BORACAY VACATION without sampling the freshest catch from the sea?  The spreads, which include fruits and some desserts, mostly cost PhP 250 per pax nett, excluded of drinks.  While the price of the buffet is so affordable, would you believe that a 1.5 liters of Coke regular costs PhP 140 (regular Manila price around PhP 37 to 40 only).  But heck, we have to try the seafood buffet here even for a night.

On my plate… IMG_4392

On Tina’s…IMG_4399

The gluttons in us had two rounds of the spread and a plate of watermelons and few servings of maja blanca and other kakanin and that’s it.  Yes, the crustaceans are fresh; there were garlic and boiled rice even some pasta and fish dishes include Lapu-lapu and Tuna; there were grilled pork liempo and fried chicken too; there were adobong pusit (squid), crabs, baked oysters and mussels and shrimps which I like the most but sorry there were the usual “lutong-bahay” taste.  In simplest terms, there’s nothing special about the buffet we had.

My wife and I have this ordinary rule of thumb when dining out : we try to eat something reasonably priced, that can’t be prepared easily; something gourmet, or unusually present at our table at home.   And even though we’re satiated after that seashore pig-out, I still felt a bit disappointed. Perhaps, I was expecting more from the spread.  At any rate, try it as well, you might like it.  As what I usually post here, ‘to each his own’.

What’s best with our eat-all-you-want- dining in Boracay or elsewhere (including hotels in the Metro), our 5-year-old son still eats for FREE :D   Although he only ate soup and few servings of fruits, we’re still happy that we didn’t pay a cent for his plate.

IMG_4401IMG_4387

Another must-try in Boracay is LEMON i CAFE  located at the heart of D’Mall in Boat Station 2. This resto boasts of all-day-breakfast ala carte menu, delicious entrees and of course, desserts.

On the afternoon of our first day in Boracay, Gabby was looking for McDonald’s or Jollibee for his favorite staples.  To no avail, I and his mom asked him of other food he wanted to chow down.  Thankfully, he pointed to a cake on a glass window display from Lemon i Cafe.

IMG_4327TIRAMISU, PhP 120+.    This is one of the best Tiramisu I’ve tasted, hands down. :D   Gabby’s picky palate likes it too.

IMG_4329IMG_4333

For most travelers like us whose budget isn’t sky’s the limit,  finding affordable food places that offer combo-meal that also doesn’t disappoint is so comforting.

D’Mall also has ANDOK’S that offers budget-friendly meals like… IMG_4660PORK SINIGANG, PhP 69.   Andok’s big bowl of sour soup of pork and veggies is surprisingly delicious!  The string beans, kangkong and tomatoes are  fresh. FYI, we haven’t had anything from Andok’s in Manila other than its grilled chicken + gravy + atchara or pickled papaya. Now, we know that there’s more of it than lechong manok.

IMG_4339SIZZLING SISIG, PhP 145.  Lipid-rich Sizzling Pork Sisig is one of Pinoy food favorites.  Since we don’t eat it on a daily basis, I guess having it on a plate during a (self-declared) holiday is logical enough (*defensive*).   Tina and I like this, malinamnam!  (tasteful, compared to other restos’).

IMG_4336IMG_4658

We also sampled Andok’s PORK BARBECUE, PhP 22 per stick and Gabby was delighted with Andok’s LECHE FLAN, PhP 34.

And I almost forgot, our brief stay in the Boracay was made special each morning with FREE breakfast inclusive of the package we availed from ESCONDIDO BEACH RESORT.  A plate of toasts, fried egg, butter and strawberry marmalade plus a cup of coffee is quite simple but good enough to start our days in the island.  1

When you have a chance (again) to be in one of the world’s best beaches, take your vacation to the fullest by defining your digestive pleasure. If  without dietary or health restrictions,  go ahead, by all means, INDULGE! :D

BORACAY SERIES : THE BEACH FROM DAWN TO DUSK

This is my 3rd post in a series.

Boracay has its unique Filipino charm. It has the glorious sunrise and the most magnificent sunset.  And who can resist its turquoise crystal waters and sublime powdery sands?  My family and I are missing it already :D

Our first morning in this island paradise was truly unforgettable.  After a restful night, my wife, Tina, our 5-year-old son, Gabby and I made an effort to rise from our bed few minutes after 5AM to freshen up and hit the waters as early as 6AM.

Mother Nature has this scene to offer every sunny morning during off season at Boat Station 1…1Boracay beaches is divided into three boat stations – Boat Station 1 has the finest, pristine white sands comparable to talc.  As Boracay first-timers, we can’t help but to get few samples to bring home as a priceless souvenir :D

3finest sand in my hand

Since the area isn’t as busy and is less crowded than Station 2 and 3, the hotels here are too pricey than others but with best amenities and services.

We stayed at ESCONDIDO BEACH RESORT in Station 1; since it’s not a beach front hotel,  it’s budget-friendlier but nonetheless, relaxing, safe and with the warmest service too :D   Few steps from Escondido and after crossing the main street and passing through a sidewalk in between 2 beach front hotels, we’ve an access to the waters already…

2That second rectangular hole from the left served as our path to the beach.

Willy’s Rock, named after a beach front resort near it,  is one of the attractions in Boat Station 1.  It has impressive rock formation near the shores and a grotto of Our Lady.  4

It’s so amazing to see it on both high tide and low tide. 5

Breathtaking views of the white beach of Boracay can be best appreciated from the uppermost area of Willy’s Rock, all 360 degrees of it! :D 7

I guess anyone can enjoy Boracay at its most quiet moments during off seasons and every sunrise when most tourists and backpackers are still asleep or intoxicated with alcohol from a nightout.

Here’s another view from the top most area of Willy’s Rock …8

For people like us who lives in urban areas, this rock formation is a sight to behold… 9

We just can’t hide the fact that we’re enjoying Willy’s Rock that morning…Wala kasing ganito sa Greenbelt o TriNoma, LOL…

IMG_44581213IMG_4453

I found this signage very important that I wish everyone in Boracay, tourists or not, should always take into action. 6

When Tina and Gabby sat on the sand and played with it, I left them for a while to take a short walk from Willy’s Rock to the northern part of Boat Station 1…

Next are  my “NOT OUR HOTEL”  photos…LOL…

Seriously, you might be interested and consider these beach front hotels on your visit to the island.  But then again, you know now what I recommend. :D IMG_4502Sea Wind Boracay Island Resort

15Sur Boracay Resort

16Ambassador Hotel…

17Pearl of the Pacific Boracay

18Residencia Boracay

Other than those in my photos, the other notable upscale resorts in Boat Station 1  are Discovery Shores, Fridays and the newest addition to them – Shangri La Boracay :D   If you have the budget to splurge, go ahead, by all means indulge!  It’s your vacation anyway! :D

As I went back to Willy’s Rock, I noticed my family became too busy making sand patterns…IMG_4492

I tried making one, but I just left it with Tina and Gabby :D

IMG_4517IMG_4515IMG_4521IMG_4362

We ate breakfast at the hotel, took showers and headed again to the beach.  We walked and walked and walked from Boat Station 1 to 2 where most restaurants, establishments including ATM machines are located (I’ll post about D’mall and our eat outs next on this series).

In the afternoon, Boat station 2 has these sights to boast…19

PARAW or sail boats with two outrigger canoes (or for us Pinoys, katig) predominate the shores of Boat Station 2 when winds are present every afternoon… Paraw with boat men are all for rent with price starts from PhP 600 per hour.  Did we try it? No. Gabby, Tina (and I) preferred to pig out rather than to sail :D   20

Actually, my wife has vertigo making her too anxious of an attack during airplane and boat rides.  So we rather dip into the water, eat, savor the wind, sand, and sun than sail or take island hopping… Island hopping which usually takes more than 4 hours going to Puka Beach and Crystal Cove and other isles near Boracay costs about PhP 1,500 and up; some offer snorkeling gears and free snacks and buffet lunch too.

IMG_4346IMG_4351Seeing all these made me realize why Boracay is considered one of the best beaches in the world.  Tourism is alive regardless of season in this island. :D

IMG_4349

Other than riding the paraw or sail boats, island hopping or taking glass-bottom boat rides, parasailing and scuba-diving can also be enjoyed.  Most people we saw also have henna tattoos on their bodies which are so affordable from PhP 50 up and stays temporarily on the skin for 2 weeks.  We never tried it for 2 reasons - we fear of paying damages when sheets at the hotel are stained and it’s not just us to have tattoos, permanent or otherwise.   You can also ask and pay some women to braid your hair or get some relaxing massage by the beach or inside their facilities.  Other attractions or must-do in Boracay is riding an ATV/all terrain vehicles which costs roughly thousands of pesos depending on the duration of driving. We saw some of these on the main road with the local tricycles and other vehicles.  Since ATVs don’t have its own trail,  driving it puts anyone to an accident-prone area especially with reckless drivers.  For some, it’s part of the thrill.  To each his own. IMG_4345

IMG_4534

Fantastic is an understatement.  Despite the commercialism, we wish Boracay could be maintained as serene and as clean as this so more local and foreign tourists can enjoy Boracay for many years.

IMG_4350

It’s a common thing during weekends to spot marvelous sand castles  along the shores and in front of those beach front hotels.  Pictures may be taken for a voluntary donation of any amount.   Before dusk, these sand castles are illuminated by lighted bottles.IMG_4378

IMG_4385

Indeed, Boracay is such a fascinating island to explore.  It’s so gorgeous that one can easily be lured and seduced by its beauty. It’s too enticing to people who long to leave the busy life even temporarily.

We’re just glad to finally enjoyed it :D

BORACAY SERIES : OUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

This is my second post in a series…

Having been considered as one of the best beaches in the world, Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan, Philippines is barely a seven kilometer-stretch with a breadth of about a kilometer at its narrowest. Its land area, according to the latest issue of Getaways Boracay Tourist Map & Guide is slightly over 1,000 hectares with only about 16,000 people. The island’s best attraction are its mile-long powdery sand beaches, crystal clear waters and fantastic dive sites.

Boracay has 3 baranggays or local communities - Manoc-Manoc where the jetty ports are located, then Balababag and Yapak.  There are over 200 hotels with over 3,500 rooms to suit any range of budget.  The main road that connects the 3 baranggays seems to have everything at present.  Other than roadside hotels, it has medical clinics, lying-in, a hospital, convenient stores, a groceries, pharmacy and a lot more.  The mode of transport along the main road is basically via tricycles;  each ride costs PhP 7 per passenger.

Last Sunday, 18 October 2009, we found a temporary home for our short stay in this Island Paradise  in Baranggay Balabag, Boracay.  This is the street that leads to our hotel…

1

It’s one of the branches of the main road; beside it is a basketball court, a stage, a multi-purpose hall and a Catholic church.  I can imagine myself and my family settling here, far from the busy areas of the metropolis; away from the hassles of daily living;  a place that can surely offer serenity and peace of mind.  But then again, a huge part of me also likes to consider it only as one of the nicest vacation places and just leave it at that.

23

One of the earliest activities that Tina, Gabby and I did after checking-in in our hotel room was to visit this church. IMG_4671

We felt we’re so blessed to have a short getaway, to have the best weather amidst the threat of a typhoon and a safe trip via air, land and water.

56

The Chuch was surprisingly big for a small community, perhaps it was really built also for the volume of tourists who visit Boracay regardless of season. It has a colorful mosaic of Christ Jesus with details of the beach at its facade and a rock and coral back drop at the main altar.  Masses are offered daily every mornings at 6 and as scheduled.

The place was a good choice for being quiet and peaceful, away from the busy bars and restaurants near the white beach. It was perfect for families and friends who seek solace from a change of environment.

One can’t help but notice this sari-sari store along the street where the church is that sells probably everything but land titles, LOL :D 7

As early as few days before September, I’ve been browsing the net and calling travel and tours offices for days, comparing packages, fees, amenities and other essentials before I consulted my wife’s opinion about my choices. (Yes, in our family, the husband provides and does the budgeting as well, but the wife still has an important say to everything).

The other hotel I considered was a beach front hotel that has a Greek-inspired restaurant at its first floor but they don’t have an office here in Manila and I wanted to transact and direct my questions to a representative of a Boracay hotel.

Tina and I knew for a fact that we won’t be spending too much time inside the hotel room except during showers and sleep, so why bother choosing a pricey hotel when we’re only after for a decent and safe place to stay? (It’s a nicer way of putting words to practicality and the truth that we’re on a tight budget for this vacation, LOL).

After reading several good reviews about a budget-friendly non-beach front hotel located at Boat Station 1, my wife and I came up with a mutual decision…

ESCONDIDO BEACH RESORT served as our temporary home during our brief vacation in the island. Although it’s not a beach front hotel, we like the fact that it’s tucked within a quiet street that’s truly relaxing.

Upon arrival, the warm and friendly staffs of Escondido including the security guard on duty greeted us with the widest smiles. :D    And their courtesy and politeness never ended on our first day in Boracay but remained consistent. Even the guy who fetched us from the airport and accompanied us through land and water transfers was so accomodating.  What they showed us was a perfect example of Pinoy hospitality.

9At the right side of the gate is the reception area where we were offered cold glasses of orange juice as welcome drinks.

We were ushered to room 202 at the second floor…

This is one of the simplest but most comfortable rooms we have checked in…

IMG_4301

I went to their office in Quezon City about a month ago to pay the reservation of fee of at least 30% of the package.  I got a receipt and a voucher after I paid an initial amount of PhP 2,000.   The friendly Escondido staff at the office, Ms. Cheng asked me to e-mail her our flight details.

The package we availed was a steal at  PhP 6,100 for two persons (Gabby was free);  inclusive of a 3 days 2 nights stay in an airconditioned deluxed room with a queen-sized bed and a single bed. The room also has a mini bar and fridge, a cable TV and hot-and-cold showers.  The package also included daily breakfast for two which can be upgraded for an additional minimal amount into Continental or Filipino breakfast.  Did I tell you that the package we paid also included the RTT/round trip transfers?

Gabby like it so much that he didn’t even miss our bed at home…

IMG_4303IMG_4309IMG_4304IMG_4306

We like Escondido that I’m recommending it to you on your next (or first) vacation in Boracay.  Thank you to the receptionists Anna and Gina (and the other lady when we left the hotel on our last day), thank you to our RTT guide, thank you to the security guards and the food servers of Escondido. You made our stay in Boracay more special. :D

After checking the place, sheets and all, we just freshen up a bit,  immediately locked the room, got the keys and headed to the beach…

Escondido Resort is only a minute-walk away from the waters… passing that sari-sari store, the church, and after crossing the street, we were instructed to walk through a sidewalk beside another hotel…

IMG_4674IMG_4676

After 4 hours at the waiting area at NAIA terminal 3; after 45 minute-plane ride; after 10 minute boat ride and  1 and 1/2 hours of land travel and a  few steps more…

IMG_4677

Voila!  Paradise….

IMG_4441

It took me few seconds of silence to realize we’re in Boracay.  I was mesmerized.  It was surreal.

I was in great awe the moment I stepped bare foot on its pristine powdery sands.  Simply amazing.

Breathtaking, isn’t it?

Up next :  more of the white beach…

BORACAY SERIES : ON WAY TO PARADISE

GOD is truly THE GREATEST!  We’ve been praying for a good weather for our Boracay trip since we reserved tickets and room accommodation a month ago and  He didn’t only give us a good one but the best :D

For the blessing of having an opportunity to enjoy one of the world’s best beaches safely with whole lot of family fun, we just cannot thank Him enough.

I’ll be sharing with you our family’s first adventure trip to Island Paradise in divided doses  posts :

1. Our TRIP from Manila – Kalibo – Boracay.

2. Our HOTEL and room accommodation.

3. Our days at THE BEACH!

4. Our Boracay-FOOD TRIP!

5. Our FUN ACTIVITIES at Boracay.

6. Our trip BACK TO MANILA.

My wife, Tina, our 5-year-old son, Gabby and I were up and about early last Sunday, 18 October 2009 and left the house at around 5:30 in the morning, to catch a plane ride to Kalibo at 9:05AM.

It was too careless of me not to read (NOTE to SELF :  Yes, it pays to read instructions always!) the note at the e-ticket from Cebu Pacific that we have to go directly to the new NAIA terminal 3.  So I asked the cab driver to take us to the old(est) domestic airport and surprisingly, the guards directed us to the  proper departure area.  Unknowingly, NAIA 3 has been Cebu Pacific’s terminal  for more than a year now.  I was really clueless for my last domestic flight was 2006 when I went to Roxas City, Capiz for work-related travel.

1

Man, we were soooo impressed!  OK, so it isn’t as huge as Hong Kong’s or Bangkok’s but it’s comparable in terms of space and facilities.  I guess with all of those brouhaha about its construction and what have you, at least proper credits should be given to the efforts of putting it all up.  It’s always refreshing to see changes (tons of it, hopefully) and improvement in a third world country such as ours, isn’t it?

After paying the PhP 200 per pax terminal fees and while we’re still amazed with NAIA 3, we found ourselves munching these airport foods at 6AM. 2

We spent PhP 500 in all of these including 2 orders of drinks; although the price was affordable, sadly there was nothing special about it, sorry.  At least, we’re happy to soothe our hungry tummies with bola-bola siopao, pork asado rice, siomai, and wanton soup.

Our boarding passes stated that the gates of 116 would open for Cebu Pacific bound to Kalibo 30 minutes before 9:05AM but it didn’t happen.  Expectedly, there was inevitable delay in flight and unluckily, it affected ours.  With only verbal apologies, they announced that our trip will be at around 10:20AM, more than an hour later than its prior schedule.

We can’t do anyting but wait and amuse ourselves;  Tina and Gabby did some yoga for my cam :)

And after several trips to the toilet to pee,  finally we boarded an air bus to Kalibo.

IMG_4245IMG_4249910

I don’t know about you  but I love plane rides. I’m no like my wife who’s so terrified during take-offs and descent; I even have no worries about air pockets; not that I enjoy them, LOL, but I simply trust my faith.  Weird as it gets, I also love foods served on planes!  Whether they’re only cold cuts from Lufthansa on way to Bangkok before, or the unforgettable too-much-food-to-handle frequent servings from Royal Brunei Airlines when we’re en route Manila-Brunei-Brisbane-Auckland, NZ  and those of PAL and China airlines food choices to name a few.

But since our recent trip was only 45 minute-domestic ride, nothing was served despite the late pick up.

It wasn’t the first time for our son to ride an air craft but he was still in a bassinet during his first and it has been 3 years since his second.  Last Sunday’s trip was his first local flight and at 5 years of age, he already appreciated the clouds better and had vivid recall of them after.

IMG_4258IMG_4260IMG_4263IMG_4273IMG_4271IMG_4267

Apparently, Mr. Sun was up and shining his brightest during our flight.  It felt like summer in October! Wind wasn’t that strong. It was smoothest flight from Manila to Kalibo. It even became almost perfect had it not for the delay.

IMG_4276IMG_4277

So Gabby and Mr. Spongebob Squarepants reached Kalibo airport for the first time.  As we were excited after being allowed to disembark, an imbecile who came from the rear end of the plane lighted a cigarette!  Didn’t he know that vehicles at the runway and the plane itself are flammable? Was it his first time to be at the tarmac?  Or some people are just plain stupid to be inconsiderate?

IMG_4278IMG_4279

From the airport, we were fetched by the hotel staff and via a 15-seater air conditioned van, we were transported to a jetty port in Caticlan from Kalibo exactly an hour and a half  land trip.  The trip was that long, owing to the suspension to use Caticlan airport after repeated runway accidents that happened few months ago.

According to our guide, the sea breeze and the waters were quite rough so we used TABON JETTY PORT in CATICLAN instead of the CAGBAN.

IMG_4282IMG_4284

We were asked to sign two manifestos – one for Boracay Tourism Authority and the other one was for Marina’s.  We availed of the hotel’s RTT/ round trip transfers so everything was paid for us by our guide. The fees didn’t only include land transport but also environmental fees and the boat ride.

Gabby took a step after another so carefully as we get in one of these motor boats at Tabon Jetty Port, Caticlan.  Each motor boats has a maximum capacity of 3o. Marina mandates all sea aircraft passengers on open house decks  to wear life vest jackets that are provided per boat so my family was more than happy to oblidged.

IMG_4283

As local tourists and shutter bugs, I asked my family to smile before the boat sailed to the waters…

IMG_4285IMG_4287

The fifteen-minute boat ride from Caticlan to Boracay was nearly seamless until Raffy, our boat, caught up with Girly, the other boat.

IMG_4294IMG_4295

The mini-traffic lasted less than a minute. :D

IMG_4288

For people who can afford to spend several figures per night,  one of the high-end upscale hotels in Boracay is Discovery Shores.  Look how enticing it is to be with them from boat transfers to whatnot… It really proves that you get your money’s worth :D but I’m not sure if it’s as exciting as the boats we rode :D

IMG_4296IMG_4297

We reached the first of the three barangays comprising Boracay in Malay, Aklan and this is Manoc-Manoc (the other 2 are Balabag and Yapak).

As others were fetched by golf carts and some small hotel vans, our guide ushered us to a tricycle which was a lot bigger than what we have in Manila.  It can accommodate 9 to 10 people including the driver. However, at that time, the yellow tricycle was exclusively intended for the three of us :D Isn’t that great?

IMG_4298

Not too long, we were warmly received by the the resort staff who offered glasses of welcome drinks.

ONE FINE DAY

Guess where we went on an early Saturday morning…IMG_4203No, it isn’t Boracay yet :D   A day before our flight to paradise, my wife, Tina, our 5-year-old son, Gabby and I left our place in Quezon City before 7AM and headed to Antipolo City.

My family and I are not that religious, but we maintain personal relationship with Him.  We decided to hear mass, pray and ask the Lord to be with us and calm the weather,  not only for our trip tomorrow but moreso for the people who were afflicted by the two recent typhoons – Ondoy and Pepeng and their places that were devastated to be spared of the recent tropical storm, Ramil that already entered Philippine area of responsibility.

IMG_4205IMG_4206

My 3 brothers and I were raised by our parents whose tradition include going to Antipolo Church particularly before a travel or a flight somewhere.  And so I wanted Gabby to grow up with the same belief that the Lord and the Virgin of Antipolo guide anyone who seeks their intervention prior to a trip.  Antipolo Church is devoted to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.

One special thing happened just after the Holy Communion.  When the priest invited everyone to say the prayer to Our Lady, an old woman in pink standing in front of us opened her clutch bag and handed two of these novena cards to me and my wife.

IMG_4234

We really appreciated her gesture and smilingly thanked her after the mass.   We plan to laminate these novena cards for us to keep.

After the mass, just like the way we used to do with my parents before, Tina and I brought Gabby to the back of the altar to go upstairs and kiss the mantle / veil of the image of the Virgin.  We first brought and lighted candles and said our intentions and prayers at its lobby.

IMG_4211

IMG_4213IMG_4212

Cameras are prohibited  inside the altar and the museum of Our Lady to keep its solemnity.

IMG_4217

Tina bought rosaries for both of us  and had them blessed at the Church’s office.

Before going home, Gabby requested if we can have breakfast at one of his favorites; where else but Jollibee :D

IMG_4219IMG_4220

Tina had beef tapa which is a sweet and salty spiced tender beef strips, while I enjoyed Jollibee’s creamy macaroni soup and corned beef meal. I like corned beef so much that I consider it as one of “I-can-eat-it-everyday-meals”  :D   My favorite is a local brand (Purefood’s, although Palm’s from New Zealand is also yum!)

While Gabby had his usual chickenjoy (and massive gravy) and peach mango pie.IMG_4221Of course, no visit to Antipolo is complete without sampling their food specialties.  Antipolo is known for suman and other native delicacies and roasted cashew nuts.  We only bought suman for our afternoon merienda. Suman makes a delicious pair with mangoes.

IMG_4222

My wife likes suman fried and caramelized with sugar; I like it as is, dipped in sugar.

At home, I immediately browsed PAG-ASA‘s website and found this satellite image and diagram of typhoon Ramil’s course…tcsatpic

No public storm warning signal is raised as of this writing.

PAG-ASA’s forecast :

Sunday morning:  700 kms East of Casiguran, Aurora
Monday morning: 470 kms East Northeast of Casiguran, Aurora or at 510 kms East of Tuguegarao City
Tuesday morning: 240 kms East of Tuguegarao City.

track
PAG-ASA noted, this disturbance will not affect any part of the country within the next 36 hours.

Prayers, as they say can move mountains.

Regardless of our religion, let’s unite in prayers that tomorrow and the days ahead will be brighter and storm-free for all of us.

We had enough of the rains. It’s high time to move on and move up after the storm.

We all deserve a day or two to enjoy. :D

gabby's beach play set

I know it’s off season.

But we all need a break.

Our son is excited.

And so are we.

It will be his first domestic plane ride.

It will be his first travel to the beach.

It will be our first time to be there.

Weather, please behave.

You’ve been furious lately.

We had enough.

Give us a little time to relax.

Can’t wait for Sunday :D

WHEN LOSING IS GAINING

My wife, Tina and I came home a few of hours ago from the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards held at PETA theater in Quezon City. It was my first time to attend such bloggers’ event and it was thrilling because my blog  is one of the finalists in Best Family and Living Blog category.

Check out this blog’s name on the 2009 PBA souvenir’s list of finalists…

IMG_4190

This is my first year to be nominated and was luckier to made it to the finals as well.  Being one of the finalists is already a great pleasure and winning as they say, is just icing on the cake :D

We came in too early, around 4:30PM because the call time on the invite via email was 5 in the afternoon.  We brought along few kilos of children’s clothes to give in to the organizers’ request for the victims of typhoon Ondoy that hit the Metro few weeks ago.

My wife and I were surprised that the event was disorganized  :(  The booths at lobby weren’t ready yet until past 5PM. In fact, there was no person to receive the pledges as I was expecting to be given at least a receipt or something.

Good thing that while we were on the queue at the registration area, my wife and I met SIDNEY SNOECK of  MY SARISARI STORE, a photoblog I truly admire.   I, for one was so honored to finally meet him; as I’ve told him personally, I am one his followers.  I so like his works of capturing the best of Filipino culture and traditions.  Wouldn’t you be so proud of being a Pinoy that a Belgian ace-photographer-blogger like him exerts so much passion and dedication of putting Filipino colors in his photo-series?  Sidney, your award for BEST FOREIGN BLOG is well-deserved.  BRAVO!

I would also like to congratulate  DENNIS VILLEGAS  for winning multiple awards inlcuding one of the Top Ten Best Post of the year! Cheers, Dennis!  (I was the one who bumped into you and said sorry as I exit the door of the theater.  I was in a hurry to go home and was a bit struck with your presence so didn’t bother to introduce myself. Sorry. But there’s always a next time).  Again, I am a fan! :D

It’s always humbling to receive comments from these award-winning bloggers!  Thank you for frequenting my site.

As for my part, I was hoping to win of course, who wouldn’t?

But I lost…. and honestly, it felt OK.  Why?  Because the “jeepney-designed” trophy and a new Nokia phone for the category I was competing were won by one of the bloggers who used to comment on my posts-  Mommy Pehpot of MAKE OR BREAK! Applause, applause!  Congratulations! :D

IMG_4182

Everyone at the lobby was treated to a cocktail and dinner served by Josiah’s catering.  The spread was not bad at all. There were also free-flowing drinks to enjoy. Thank you PBA!

The event could’ve been more special if there were no flaws or at least, less hassles in the flow of the program. Man, the show started soooo late than scheduled! I’m sorry but the presenters apparently did not rehearsed.  It’s  ironic because the stage itself is built for professional thespians of PETA who are known for great discipline.  Thanks for the witty humor of the host, RJ Ledesma that saved the night.

We didn’t finish the event because my wife still has to go on an early morning shift at the Operating Room the following day.

As we came home from the event, our 5-year-old son Gabby told me the most rewarding statement a parent can possibly receive…

  Tatay-doc :  Gabby, hindi nanalo si Daddy…

Gabby : OK lang po ‘yun Daddy, share ko naman sa inyo ni Mommy iyong trophy ko (referring to his 3rd placer trophy from his declamation contest last February) :D

With those sweetest words, I felt my blogging was gladly recognized by our son, to whom this site is heartily dedicated.

To my friends-on-line, my readers, my blog-buddies, THANK YOU!

Your frequent visits and comments here never fail to put the widest smile on my face. :D

Your comments in all of my posts about my family- from dining to our little adventures in life and things in between are more than enough reasons than a trophy to ENJOY blogosphere.

Maraming Salamat po for following BEYOND TOXICITY.  I never thought blogging and gaining virtual friends could be this so much FUN! :D

Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

UPDATED : Here’s a clip shown at the PBA awards night that made me smile up to my ears :D

BTW, my wife was happy to bring home complimentary copies of magazines from SUMMIT MEDIA booth at the lobby.

Thanks, PBA!  Till next year and beyond…

SPONGEBOB LOVE

On his first birthday, he wore a muti-colored-custom-made clown costume because my wife and I decided to have a Finding Nemo themed birthday party at home with our parents, relatives, friends. He then matched the real clowns present on his day.

His second birthday party was done at McDonald’s Greenhills.  He had two birthday cakes and more than 50 guests.  Grimace, the mascot graced the occasion.

My wife, my parents and I only went to TriNoma mall in Quezon City with him and had dinner at a Filipino restaurant called Mangan with his 3 mini-cakes that we bought from Breadtalk on his third birthday.

He went to preschool before his fourth.  Since then, he already has his own preference.  At his Nursery class, he had Mr. Bean themed party complete with party hats and all that’s fun.

For his fifth birthday…

The THEME : Someone who lives in a pineapple under the sea! :D

The INVITES…IMG_4063We were working on a budget and my wife can’t tolerate crowded stinky places as she easily feels dizzy, worse her vertigo might be triggered,  not to forget she wasn’t off from duty at the Opeating Room, so I was alone when I went to the basement of Divisoria Mall in Manila  just to buy these fancy invites for PhP 2 per piece.  168 Mall didn’t have the supplies I was looking for.

I grew up going to the streets of Ylaya, Tabora and Juan Luna in Divisoria every start of a new school year with my parents, whenever they buy us (me and my 3 brothers) new sets of things for school : from socks, undergarments, hankies, etc. in some Chinese-owned wholesale store.  So buying stuffs for my own kid now and haggling were so damn easy for me. :D

The LOOT BAGS…IMG_4118I honestly thought of having paper instead of plastics for the loot bags as I am concerned, believe it or not, with the environment.  But I failed to find commercially available paper bags with the prints in line with the party theme and I and my wife had no time doing art works made of paper just for the loot bags. These cost PhP 20 per 10 pieces (also PhP 2 a piece).

What’s inside the loot bags? Each has a hand towel (PhP 75 per dozen) , a pencil (PhP 15 per dozen), a pad of stickers (PhP 3 per pad) and  a plastic sheet of stickers (PhP 2.25 per sheet), fruttos candies, marshmallows and lollipops (PhP 120 for 5 packs from the Landmark in TriNoma), and…. that’s it!  We’re on a budget, remember? LOL :D

The CAKE…IMG_4164I guess for every Pinoy-children’s party,  Goldilocks cake doesn’t disappoint.  This choco-marble-flavored Spongebob- fishing-for-Jellyfishes-theme (less the Jelly fishes for they ran out of stock and were replaced with gold choco coins with my consent–didn’t I just tell you they don’t disappoint? LOL) :) was ordered 2 weeks ago at a branch near our place for PhP 855;  inclusive of the cake and the themed decor.  It’s a bit expensive for a low-key party but heck, what’s a themed party without a themed cake?

The FOOD…IMG_4136The party meal was prepared, cooked and packed by my wife, Tina (applause, applause!). The photo above doesn’t give justice to how the food tasted. Those breaded chicken fillets were deep fried to its crispiest; and the macaroni in beefy sweet tomato sauce was also a winner.  The kids loved it.

Did I do any cooking? Hmmm, I did slice the hotdogs into pieces and, believe it or not again, I cooked the gravy!  I just mixed flour in water, heated the pan with water, 3 chicken cubes, soy sauce and a bar of Anchor butter into boil and voila! - chicken gravy tasted better than Jollibee’s, LOL.  The kids loved it too!

The GIFTS…IMG_4173His classmates were sweetest to give presents. It’s a mutual thing between them. :D

The PARTY PEOPLE…IMG_4155….Children are a gift from the Lord!

Our smiles went up to our ears when we heard comments, “ang sarap!…, ang cute ng cake!… ang sarap ng food!”  from these kids.  You know children don’t tell lies :D

The BIRTHDAY BOY…IMG_4146

Our son’s birthday wish for a Spongebob Squarepants themed party was granted. Thanks to the mighty forces behind the successful simple event -myself and my wife :D

Seriously, we thank the Lord for His endearing Love and we can’t thank Him enough for blessing us with Gabby.

On our part, we always pray for Gabby to have a better health- away from any sickness and for him to be safe at all times.

Gabby :  (while on his facebook) Daddy, ano pong spelling ng THANK YOU?

Tatay-doc : :D

We love you Gabby!

:D What’s your fondest memory of your own kiddie party?Don’t you just miss being a kid?

GABBY TURNS 5

Our son, Gabby officially turns FIVE today.  Happy Birthday, anak!  Your mom and I love you so much!  Thank You, Lord for giving us Your greatest blessing.

In line with his birthday and in the spirit of sharing,  my wife and I segregated again his old clothes which we’ll donate to the children affected by typhoons.  I already brought few kilos of his clothes to my work for similar reach-out activity last week and we’ll do it again this week in response to the request of the organizers of Philippine Blog Awards.

This humble blog  is one of the finalists under Family and Living Category on this year’s PBA.  Last weekend, I received the official invitation via email to the awards night this Friday, October 09, at PETA theater in Quezon City and with it came a request for all the blogger-finalists and attendees and their guests to bring dry clothes, towels, footwears to the designated area at the venue which they will turn over to the recipients.

CONFESSION :  I’m a sentimental fool. I’m attached for a while to some things of the past that usually remind me of  remarkable memories.  Such things include our son’s baby clothes.  It’s not that we don’t like to give them away as most of them are of imported brands, but a lot of these clothes were gifts from my in-laws, relatives and friends.
IMG_4096IMG_4094

Then again, we thought of finally donating them to the needy rather than keeping them with no use in our wardrobes. So these few pieces will be brought to PBA Awards night as our little pledge. We’re happy that we’ll donate all of these with our son’s consent. :D

His preschool, which is a few blocks away from our place, allows simple birthday celebrations during recess.  Since Gabby is a member of TGI Friday’s, TriNoma which gives him FREE KIDDIE MEALS for an entire whole year of dining with them and a free birthday package for 30 kids, we initially thought that we’re spared with the expenses for his birthday party this year.

But just like other nice things with little hassles in between, the free TGIF birthday kiddie package is only available for pick up during store hours, which we completely understand.  Problem is, our son’s school recess is at 9:30AM so it will be impossible for us to use the TGIF freebies to their class as his party food. Nevertheless, we decided to claim the freebies today and we opted to reschedule our son’s school birthday party on Wednesday, October 07.  My wife is free from work on Wednesdays this semester allowing her to cook and prepare all stuffs.

Tina arranged details with the friendly people of TGIF  TriNoma for me to claim the birthday package today at 1PM.  Since I’m off from work the whole day, I came to the resto with my cousin earlier than expected.

IMG_4097IMG_4100

One our favorite venues for our dates since we’ve met is TGIF.  We like Glorietta 3 and TriNoma branches.  We go here not only for their great food in huge American-servings but also for the ambiance of this resto-bar.  Imagine ski and skate boards, movie posters, whales and big fish, a bicycle and road signs on walls to delight you as you enjoy your plates.

IMG_4099

We only waited for 10 minutes for the staff to prepare these…

IMG_4107

My cousin and I were surprised to easily lift  a tied-5-styro packs in a finger! They were so super light! I almost forgot that these are KIDDIE birthday packs! :D

IMG_4104IMG_4102

Each packs contained fettuccini in tomato beef sauce, chicken fillets and potato chips.

I asked my cousin to bring 10 packs to my dad and siblings and nephew and nieces at our house in Pasig City and the other 10 packs for my aunt, uncle, and cousins whose house in Karangalan Villagae in Pasig was deeply submerged in last week’s typhoon.

We saved the 30 pieces of apple and dalandan juice cups and the packs of plastic spoons and forks for Gabby’s school party.

Tina came home with Breadtalk’s Chocolate mousse with a free little yellow candle for Gabby to blow and make his wish.

IMG_4109IMG_4114

Gabby’s request is a Spongebob Squarepants themed party during their 30-minute recess on Wednesday, so despite the fact that we’re on a tight budget, we’ll grant his wish.

Invites were already sent to his classmates.  He’ll have his Spongebob birthday cake, Spongebob-inspired loot bags and a home-cooked party meal courtesy of his mom.

Thank you TGIF TriNoma!

Thank you Gabby for being so obedient, smart, God-fearing son.

Carry on, anak!

Happy birthday!

GLUCOSE FIX

DEFENSIVE FOODIE :) My family and I love to eat veggies, fruits and drink liters of water a day (especially me, I always think I’m an marine creature on my past life if there is such, for my great love for fluid intake).  We try to balance our meals AT HOME but whenever we go out on a simple family bonding, say inside a mall or in a stone-throw away fastfood or convenient store, can’t resist when our cravings go haywire sometimes most of the time, LOL. Resistance as the say is futile… I say particularly when food is notably delicious!

IMG_4052234

I always wanted to try CAFE BRETON but only had a chance last weekend (yes, just before we had our panic buying preparedness-grocery shopping in Landmark, TriNoma, in Quezon City).

The comment posted by one of my blog buddies, Ingrid of  Urban Mudra in my earlier entry about desserts to try this quaint food place was really compelling!  I brought my wife, Tina and our son, Gabby to have our glucose fix which was perfect before we hit the grocery shelves.

I was surprised that Cafe Breton’s menu is so reasonably priced and that we only spent less than PhP500 for everything we’ve tried.  Times like these, families have to be extra conscious of domestic budget and luckily, this homey Mediterranean-Grecian inspired resto will not make you spend too much on dining, at the same time, there’s no compromise with the quality of food they serve.

567IMG_4047

Gabby was so delighted that he had a handful of yummies…

IMG_4043

He and his mom shared on those tall glasses of sweet refreshments.

STRAWBERRY COBBLER, PhP 107.14 + It has generous servings of plump soft-chewy strawberries and whipped cream. Gabby, who loves strawberry-flavored anything other than chocolates, unsurprisingly liked this!

IMG_4041IMG_4046

He also tried the smoothy mango shake, although I like it more than he did. In case you don’t know yet, I’m a sucker for mangoes. :D

IMG_4039MANGO SHAKE, PhP 84.82+.  It’s near velvety consistency and taste of real ripe mangoes makes it different to other commercial shakes and smoothies.

I now believe that a visit to Cafe Breton isn’t complete without trying a plate of their heavenly crepes!

IMG_4037LA PINAY, PhP 142.86+  This perfectly thin crepe was filled with ample volume of riped mango slices, topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate drizzle. I swear, this has been the most delicious crepe I’ve ever tasted. Can’t wait to revisit Cafe Breton for another plate! :D

While my son and wifey were enjoying their sweet moment together with their orders, I felt satiated after finishing my plate and sipping a cup of coffee…

IMG_4033CAPPUCCINO, PhP 75.89+.  Foam’s just right…a nice way to end a sweet treat.

We like it here. Definitely.

FAST FRESH ITALIAN

I don’t know about you, but my family and I give our thumbs up to one of our favorites : FAZOLI’s in Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City.  Since the day it opened in the Philippines more than a decade ago, we have been frequenting  this fastfood for their combo meals, mostly pastas and chicken and their eat-all-you-want soft garlic BREAD STICKS :D   Our 5-year-old son, Gabby can eat more than 3 of these bread sticks in one sitting!

Yes, there’s nothing special about their beverage line of  usual sodas, orange juice (which I usually have) and (the not-so-good) iced tea but they also come in drink-all-you-can for only PhP 50+ and diners are free to self-serve to their hearts content!

Italian food has never been this affordable!  A true value for money; good-tasting too!  And did I say the ambiance isn’t that bad? There’s a mini-bridge between a koi pond at its facade.   The pay-as-you-order counters are manned  by friendly staff.  The wrought iron and tiled stairs will take you to its second floor which has a walkway connecting the dining areas.  Lighting is subdued; entire place is apt for family dining and chit chat with friends although it can also get packed especially on pay days. Fazoli’s is just a best alternative to noisy fastfoods.

After we heard mass at St. Pio Chapel near Eastwood City (view earlier post below), on a Sunday afternoon following 2 typhoons that badly hit the Metro and the Northern parts of the country; not to forget it’s a day before our son turns 5 years old; I became excited again to eat at Fazoli’s; thanks to my wife’s suggestion.

Where else can you find a delicious combo meal of PESTO and 2-PIECE-ITALIAN CHICKEN for only PhP 165+?

IMG_4083

The pasta was just right for me, not too moist, not too dry.  I LIKE PESTO so much and Fazoli’s version is one of my favorites for its simplicity and for being budget-friendly.  The Italian chicken also doesn’t disappoint.  One can easily appreciate the herbs and flavor well infused to its bones.

My wife, Tina and Gabby shared this plate…

IMG_4079BAKED ZITI, PhP 150+.  Simply flavorful. I always like melted cheese on tomato sauce.  Our son even dipped his bread sticks on this serving.

Then the three of us also shared…

IMG_4085PEPERRONI STROMBOLI, PhP 110+  It comes with a dip of stewed tomatoes and herbs.

So much for our late Sunday lunch!

Fazoli’s also serve other pastas, salads, submarino sandwiches, pizza of course, minestone soup, Italian rice.

Fazoli’s is located at Eastwood City Cyberpark, E. Rodriguez Jr. Ave., Bagumbayan, Libis, Quezon City, Metro Manila and also available across America, check  HERE.

BLESSED SUNDAY

After the country has been devastated by 2 typhoons – Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma)  in a week, we sincerely hope  for the affected Pinoys to thrive and rise above the crisis.  Because of this, going to church on the day we appreciated sunshine more than ever, became more purposeful.  Our family joins the nation in praying for continuous blessings.

Early Sunday morning, my wife, Tina and I went to a private hospital near our place to visit a newly admitted distant relative suspicious of having nasopharyngeal carcinoma.  Upon discussing with the ENT specialist the diagnosis and his plan to perform punch biopsy tomorrow to determine whether the mass is benign or malignant, in order for their management to be guided, we hurried home immediately.

We found our son, Gabby, savoring his last day of week-loooong (pre)school vacation after the rains, by watching his favorite cartoons. In a snap, we decided to hear mass at this chapel we long to visit.  IMG_4070It’s St. Pio’s Chapel in Libis, Quezon City (near Eastwood City).

It was our first time to hear mass in that chapel built in honor of the blessed Italian priest who had stigmata and known for being miraculous. Padre Pio was declared a saint by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002.  We were glad to see so many devotees from all walks of life; even wheelchair-borne geriatric individuals were present to venerate.

(note : photos were discreetly taken before and after the Holy Mass)

Tina spotted a sign at the door of a room in the chapel alotted for parents with children below age 7.  IMG_4071CALANDRA ROOM, named after the person who helped established the chapel, is an enclosed airconditioned room with sliding glass doors alocated especially for families with babies and kids.  There are built-in speakers and Holy Communion is also given.

IMG_4072There’s also a room called BISHOP JESUS SISON MEMORIAL HALL which can be access by taking this stairs inside the Calandra room.  We didn’t go up to view it for it was already packed.  The door shown in this photo will lead you to this..

IMG_4074IMG_4075

This area is called REV. FR. ALESSIO PARENTE PATIO, an open-air area where faithfuls can light candles and write their petitions. The patio has the life-sized statue of Padre Pio and the Holy Cross.

Solemnity reigns inside the chapel.

After the mass, we witnessed and participated in the veneration of St. Pio’s relic.

IMG_4078IMG_4076

After being there for more than an hour, we felt so blessed; not only because our family and home were spared by the typhoons but we’re so thankful after hearing mass a day just before Gabby turns FIVE! :D

Honestly, we’re not religious; but one thing is sure, my family and I maintain our personal relationship with our Lord. We try our very best to live life according to His will.

We ate late lunch after the mass; i’ll post it separately.

How was your Sunday?

PANIC SI MISTER, PANIC SI MISIS

This was the scene at Landmark Supermarket in TriNoma, Quezon City today when we did our not-so-ordinary weekly grocery shopping at around half hour past 3 in the afternoon…

IMG_4059

I asked the cashier and the bagger who assisted us if this was the picture since morning. They told me that shoppers came in troops since last week.

Everyone was in PANIC mode or perhaps just like us, only wanted to BE PREPARED for the  typhoon Pepeng.  After what Tropical Storm Ondoy had done to Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces, most Pinoys have learned lessons from Nature (I hope so).   We need not to be  former boy or girl scouts to be always ready with everything; or to be somenone with OCD/Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to be most concerned and anxious at anything.  Preparedness is the key to these calamities.  Remember it wasn’t raining when Noah built his ark.

IMG_4062In as much as I wanted to buy tons of food stuffs, our weekly budget wouldn’t allow :(   It’s also bad to  hoard too much supplies because other people might be left with nothing. So we only had this push cart and waited for 30 minutes at the queue to the cashier.

IMG_4061

We’ve enough supplies of candles and batteries at home so much of the items we bought were all to secure our tummies for the next few days.  I wish we also have extra budget to buy relief goods for the afflicted people from the wrath of Ondoy last week. We have donated old clothes and will give more next week. I wish to join medical missions but I can’t risk my family’s security these days. I just have to be with them.

I and my wife, Tina with our 5-year-old son, Gabby join the entire nation in praying fervently that our homes will be spared by the effects of typhoon.  Kaya po natin yan, basta’t sama-sama!

On the lighter side, we can’t resist but to click our cam on these miniature pumpkins…

IMG_4054

We were delighted to see something literally cute despite the situation..

IMG_4055

We just failed to ask how much a piece or a kilo.  Nevertheless, the sight of these pumpkins was enough to make us smile, ask Gabby…  :D

IMG_4058IMG_4057

Seriously, Let’s continue reaching out…  LET’S ALL  UNITE in PRAYERS.

May the Good LORD bless us ALL.

Be safe.

DADDY’S BOY

1Dearest Gabby,

You know that there was never a day that I failed to tell you that I and your mom love you so much and we are so blessed to have you as our son.

You’ve grown so fast that I barely notice that it has been more than half a decade since your first photo was taken in utero via ultrasound (UTZ).

When I brought your mom to the hospital for her 4D-UTZ for us to have a more defined glimpse of you,  you’re covering your cute little face then, so we opted for the usual 2D.  Nonetheless, seeing you for the first time through this black and white print and hearing your heart beat were truly awesome. It verified the start of our parenthood. :D

Our days since then became more meaningful. :D  We began to live not only for ourselves but for you.

62536354

We’re happy when we brought you home from the hospital because we became complete.  Your smiles and giggles were enough reasons to hurry home from work.

68676970

We’re happy when we brought you to Auckland, New Zealand where you had your first crawl.  You were still in your stroller when we toured the city of Bendar Seri Begawan in Brunei.  And when you turned 2, you’ve seen Disney’s royalties in Hong Kong. You’ve became a traveler at such an early age! :D

We’re happy when we enrolled you to preschool. Your mom Tina and I recalled our basics as you entered Nursery last year.

1_425656259l1_889576603l

We’re happy when you did well on your first year in preschool; you’re so interested not only on academics but with extracurricular activities as well.

We’re happy when you  bagged the 3rd place in your 2-stanza declamation contest with other 51 batchmates. Even your Lolo and Lola were thrilled watching you with your winning piece.

1_706765269l

We’re happy when you graduated from Nursery and promoted to Kindergarten :D

g2g11_701514856l1_598663979l

We’re happy when you made friends…just be easy on the girls, Gab! :D

1_586644334l1_840673632l

As we celebrate your 5th year of life next week, we’ll grant your request of having a simple birthday party with your classmates and teachers during your recess in school.   We wanted you to learn the value of sharing of whatever we have to others too.

And so prior to your birthday party, your mom and I have donated a few kilos of your old clothes to those afflicted by the tropical storm Ondoy that hit the country last week.  Helping others particularly in times of stressful situations would make us better persons, anak.  It’s good for our soul.

I know you’ll grow up smarter, God-fearing and better man. Pursue your dreams of becoming a chef /restaurateur someday and we’ll be there to guide you all the way.  Advance Happy birthday, Gabby!

YOU’RE OUR HAPPINESS!

Love,

Tatay-doc :D
