Receiving recognition from others is healthy. It makes us satisfy Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs – which includes self esteem. With utmost humility, I always get some good praises from students. Being an instructor of Medical Surgical Nursing in a college which is located somewhere in the middle of Quezon City and Manila for 3 years now, improved me to become a better person. It’s a fulfilling job. I get to influence young minds, encourage them to challenge themselves and exert more to the best of their abilities. In return, few of them despise me, ofcourse no one can please everybody but more often than not, majority of them appreciated my efforts. I’d like to believe that their high regards to my job are sincere and true.
I did not pursue my medical training into specializing in a particular field for some reasons. Practical-wise, it’s not that rewarding. But given a chance to have financial stability, i would still pursue it in no time. For now, I am just an ordinary doctor who did not go into residency training (yet). But nevertheless, the MD that comes after my surname still attracts respect from others, again giving myself a boost.
But it’s not that being a doctor or an educator satisfy me the most. But rather being a simple father to my son gratifies me to the highest hierarchy in the pyramid of Maslow. Being a dad gives me the opportunity to raise a life, mold him into a person who is God-fearing and equipped with moral values. The greatest challenge that I have as a parent, which I share with my wife, is to raise Gabby (and our future children) as better as he (they) can be. We’re not dreaming of having children of superior human beings, but just to be content with healthy, and happy kid(s).
I may not be the best mentor to my students. I may not be a good doctor or a good husband. Neither I am a diligent son nor a dutiful brother but I’m trying my best to be a better dad to my son Gabby. I am thankful for good comments and high regards from students, colleagues, and some patients before but what is more important to me than those is to see Gabby smile and to hear him say he loves his Tatay-doc.
